[6]
hello and welcome to the Hohner
[8]
harmonica workshops workshops co 2.1
[13]
assembling the slide package
[17]
the first step in reassembling your
[20]
chromatic harmonica is to screw on the
[23]
reed plates there are two things that
[25]
one has to remember while doing this the
[28]
first is that of course you have to have
[30]
the long Reed's where the long slots are
[33]
to be found on the comb a second thing
[36]
is that the reedplate grooves have to be
[40]
at the front on the outside and then you
[43]
simply fit the screws through the holes
[46]
the larger holes on the upper reed plate
[48]
and screw them into the thread on the
[50]
lower reedplate the first screws that
[58]
are inserted are the outside screws at
[61]
the bottom edges the back of the comb
[63]
and these are slightly tightened into
[66]
their threads on the other reed plate so
[69]
that the replate stay in position after
[72]
that the other screws are inserted
[75]
starting in the middle and also just
[78]
screwed in slightly they must be
[80]
tightened they're simply locked into
[82]
place so they stay in the hole and
[84]
working from the middle of the reed
[87]
plate outwards towards the sides all of
[91]
the screws are inserted one after the
[92]
other and only after they are all in
[96]
place and locked into their respective
[98]
threads does one start tightening them
[101]
and you start tightening in the middle
[104]
right yeah you start tightening in the
[107]
middle and work outwards and you do this
[110]
in stages because otherwise what can
[112]
happen is the reedplate
[114]
warps and then it won't be airtight when
[119]
all the screws have been screwed into a
[121]
point where the Hayes are about a
[122]
millimeter or two millimeters above the
[124]
reed plate you start to tighten them
[127]
starting at the back in the middle and
[130]
working outwards towards the ends of the
[133]
reed plate with the screws at the back
[137]
when these have all been tightened you
[140]
then go to the front row of screws and
[142]
once again starting in the middle work
[144]
outwards towards the edges of the
[147]
reedplate one thing that's really
[149]
important to pay attention to when
[152]
screwing in these reedplate screws is
[155]
not to over tighten them if you over
[157]
tighten reedplate screws you can cause
[160]
the reedplate to warp and this will mean
[162]
that the instrument is not airtight so
[165]
don't tighten them as tight as they will
[166]
go
[167]
just tighten them until you meet with
[170]
proper resistance but the screw head has
[173]
reached the reedplate
[175]
another thing that can happen should you
[177]
over tighten the reedplate screws and
[179]
warp the reedplate is due to the
[182]
extremely narrow tolerances between read
[185]
and sort this can cause the reed to clip
[188]
the edge of the slot and this is
[189]
something to be avoided at all costs so
[191]
don't over tighten the reedplate screws
[194]
it's impossible to say exactly how
[197]
frequently the slide package of a
[199]
chromatic harmonica should be
[200]
disassembled and cleaned however is safe
[203]
to say that if the slide is sticking or
[206]
if the mouthpiece is loose and losing
[208]
air then it's time to take a look at it
[211]
afterwards you need to reassemble the
[214]
slide package so that it functions
[216]
optimally the only tool that you need to
[219]
do this is the screwdriver one thing
[222]
that it's important to remember when
[224]
reassembling the slide package is that
[227]
you have to put the reed plates firmly
[230]
on to the comb first because they
[233]
stabilize the comb and if you don't do
[236]
this then the pressure of the slide
[237]
assembly on the front of the comb may
[239]
cause the comb to warp so the instrument
[242]
won't be airtight it's an operation
[245]
which only takes seconds when performed
[248]
by professionals in the hona factory but
[251]
it can be a daunting prospect if you
[253]
only have to do it occasionally it's a
[257]
matter of some controversy whether it's
[259]
actually necessary to use slide
[261]
lubricant actually for most people their
[263]
saliva is all lubricant that they need
[266]
but the composition of different
[268]
people's saliva is different
[270]
if you think that you need to use slide
[273]
lubricant to get a smooth slide action
[275]
use it extremely sparingly
[277]
what garbey is going to do now is put a
[279]
drop on each side of the slide a tiny
[281]
drop as I'm sure you can see and then
[284]
spread it with the forefinger and thumb
[287]
evenly along the whole length you don't
[290]
need to use any more than that and you
[292]
need to avoid at all costs that it gets
[294]
inside the instrument because if it gets
[297]
onto your windsavers or into the reed
[299]
slots then it's going to gum them up so
[301]
use it sparingly the first step is to
[305]
place the blank on the front of a comb
[308]
assembly then the slide is placed on top
[315]
of the blank and the slide spring is
[318]
inserted through the appropriate hole in
[320]
the slide correctly positioning the
[324]
mouthpiece and tightening the screws is
[326]
the most critical part of assembling the
[328]
slide package start with the screw on
[332]
the opposite side to the slide button
[335]
here the buffer is slipped over the
[338]
screw and then the screw is inserted
[341]
into the hole in the front of the comb
[344]
assembly when it's sitting firmly in
[348]
place the screw is tightened likely a
[351]
maximum of two turns no more you're not
[354]
meant to screw it in now the mouthpiece
[357]
screw on the slide button side of the
[360]
mouthpiece is inserted into the hole
[362]
from the front and the buffer is pushed
[365]
over the screw from the other side it's
[369]
a bit fiddly trying to get the screw and
[371]
the buffer on the slide button side into
[374]
the hole the best way to do this is to
[376]
push the slide button in slightly as
[379]
this then exposes the hole and permits
[381]
you to slot the screw into the hole if
[385]
you're unlucky at this stage then the
[388]
slide spring may jump out of its
[391]
position and you can also have the
[393]
mischance that the buffer falls inside
[395]
the instrument if this happens you have
[397]
little alternative but to take the reed
[399]
plates off and start again so be patient
[402]
and
[402]
good luck so if that went well both
[406]
screws should now be in position and
[408]
they can now be carefully tightened the
[411]
next step is then to check the slide
[413]
action to see how smoothly it moves as
[418]
the mouthpiece screws haven't been fully
[421]
tightened at this point the slide should
[423]
move completely freely what we now do is
[427]
tighten the screw on the opposite side
[430]
to the slide button until you feel a
[432]
clear resistance when pushing in the
[435]
slide button then loosen the screw just
[439]
a tiny bit and the action will be right
[442]
and now this procedure is repeated on
[445]
the other side where the button is held
[447]
and like that the slide can move freely
[451]
but the slide assembly is airtight now
[455]
it's time to play the instrument through
[457]
one time to make sure that everything is
[459]
working all right
[478]
all right and now with the slide button
[482]
in
[499]
wonderful so that's working again and
[502]
it's airtight
[503]
what we now do is insert the cover
[506]
supports which you can just basically
[511]
push back into the holes that they came
[514]
from before one only needs really to
[521]
press them in slightly it doesn't
[523]
require any great strength and now it's
[526]
time to put the covers back on again
[528]
which is done fairly quickly and easily
[531]
once again this can be a bit fiddly with
[534]
full length covers because you need to
[536]
make sure that they are really sitting
[538]
exactly right otherwise you can't get
[541]
the two screws to join up but it appears
[545]
to have worked
[559]
a voila completely reassembled
[575]
you
