Here's Why You Want A Really Boring Job - How Money Works - YouTube
Channel: How Money Works
[0]
i was watching the 1999 movie office space the聽
other day a comedy set at the peak of the 1990s聽聽
[5]
corporate culture it is one of my all-time聽
favorite movies but the more i watch it the聽聽
[10]
more i notice something the core of this comedy聽
is its cynical commentary on working a boring job聽聽
[16]
at a boring company but the more i watch it the聽
better the jobs of peter and his co-workers look聽聽
[21]
because it's a comedy the writers took a聽
lot of creative liberties to make peter's聽聽
[25]
working environment especially terrible but even聽
still 20 years later it doesn't look that bad聽聽
[32]
his office cubicle would be a luxury to most聽
workers today in an open plan office with no walls聽聽
[37]
in sight he is allowed to go on extended lunches聽
with his colleagues and even his over dramatized聽聽
[42]
shitty boss knows that working on a weekend is聽
a big ask rather than an expectation this made聽聽
[47]
me think of the classic anecdote find a job you聽
love and you will never work a day in your life聽聽
[52]
most of us go to work because we have to not聽
because we want to and that means a lot of us聽聽
[57]
are stuck spending a good portion of our waking聽
hours doing things that aren't very enjoyable聽聽
[62]
a cunning strategy that school career planners聽
and linkedin gurus will promote to get around this聽聽
[66]
unfortunate predicament is to find a job that you聽
love doing so that you are excited to go to work聽聽
[71]
every day and you don't feel like you are working聽
at all on the surface this sounds sensible now聽聽
[77]
more than ever with new technologies there are聽
millions of different job titles out there with聽聽
[81]
new professions and career paths being made every聽
single day my job as a now full-time youtuber聽聽
[87]
didn't exist 15 years ago but now it's the career聽
that children want most beating out traditionally聽聽
[93]
popular options like astronaut but i want to聽
do what i do best which is to rein in on this聽聽
[98]
parade of finding fulfillment through your work聽
instead i want to try and convince you that what聽聽
[103]
you want instead is a really boring job a job聽
that doesn't make you or anybody else excited聽聽
[108]
a job that nobody would dream of so it's time聽
to learn how money works which was made possible聽聽

[145]
there are lots of very attractive jobs out there聽
that for a number of factors would appear to be聽聽
[149]
preferable over other jobs there is being a doctor聽
lawyer or high-level corporate executive which is聽聽
[155]
enticing because these roles are traditionally聽
very well paid and are very well respected by聽聽
[160]
society at large if you tell someone that you聽
are a c-suite executive at a fortune 500 company聽聽
[165]
you are instantly going to get more respect聽
than if you told them that you work in retail聽聽
[170]
is this how it should be of course not but it is聽
and people are willing to sacrifice a lot for that聽聽
[175]
respect these roles come with the expectation聽
of very long and irregular hours to say nothing聽聽
[181]
of the years of grueling study or corporate butt聽
kissing needed to get the jobs in the first place聽聽
[186]
now there's actually nothing wrong with these jobs聽
most people know what they are getting themselves聽聽
[190]
in for when they pursue these kinds of careers and聽
the trade-offs are clear most people do these jobs聽聽
[195]
because of prestige not because they love them so聽
what about jobs that people are more passionate聽聽
[201]
about the jobs that people would supposedly love聽
to do i am talking about jobs in the fields that聽聽
[206]
people get excited about like gaming fashion聽
travel and sports imagine getting paid to make聽聽
[212]
video games or attend fashion events around聽
the world sounds like a dream right well no聽聽
[219]
big name companies in aspirational industries聽
are more often than not terrible places to work聽聽
[224]
the reason for this is simple they know that聽
people want to work for them so if you as a worker聽聽
[229]
aren't willing to put in unpaid overtime deal聽
with abusive management and accept comparatively聽聽
[234]
low pay then there are dozens or sometimes even聽
hundreds of equally qualified candidates who are聽聽
[238]
willing to put up with these issues because they聽
get to work what they thought would be their dream聽聽
[242]
job turnover in these companies is extremely聽
high especially when it is considered that聽聽
[248]
these businesses are attracting skilled career聽
driven workers the type of worker that you might聽聽
[252]
normally expect to stick around for longer than聽
a regular employee now of course changing jobs聽聽
[258]
regularly is actually a good idea employees that聽
change companies on average every two years are聽聽
[263]
paid significantly better than their peers who聽
attempt to work for internal promotions but you聽聽
[267]
need to be quitting for the right reasons quitting聽
your current job to start a new more senior role聽聽
[272]
at a company offering double your current salary聽
as a great career move quitting your current job聽聽
[277]
because you can't mentally handle another week of聽
a coding crunch is probably going to stall your聽聽
[282]
career development another reason it's best to聽
avoid doing what you love for work is that you聽聽
[286]
won't love it forever even the most exciting jobs聽
you can imagine have a lot of boring work that聽聽
[292]
comes with them a video game tester will spend聽
most of their time doing the same mission over and聽聽
[296]
over again to make sure there are no bugs and most聽
people that work for nfl teams spend their days in聽聽
[301]
an office answering emails just like everybody聽
else even if a dream job does manage to live up聽聽
[307]
to its type initially there is one surefire way聽
to end up hating something you originally loved聽聽
[312]
and that is being forced to do it for 40 hours聽
a week with the threat of homelessness hanging聽聽
[316]
over you if you don't really you are much better聽
off working for money and then using that money聽聽
[320]
to enjoy things you love in your own time in聽
your own way hopefully i have convinced you聽聽
[326]
that exciting jobs are not all that they seem but聽
surely that doesn't mean that a boring job is the聽聽
[330]
best alternative right well they have a few big聽
perks that a lot of people don't really consider聽聽
[336]
a boring job at a boring company will on average聽
be easier to get than the rare more prized聽聽
[341]
jobs at exciting companies having more options聽
available to you especially early in your career聽聽
[346]
can be a big head start over your peers who waited聽
out or go through extended internships to get a聽聽
[351]
traditional dream job boring jobs will also on聽
average pay better ford's median employee made 64聽聽
[358]
316 dollars in 2018 including bonuses overtime and聽
stock awards gm's media and employee made slightly聽聽
[366]
more than 77 849 dollars tesla a far more exciting聽
business paid its median employee just 56 163聽聽
[376]
this of course will not be true for every company聽
but again if there are more people that want to聽聽
[380]
work at a company then generally that company聽
can get away with paying their workers less聽聽
[385]
this is even more apparent when we聽
zoom out to look at entire industries聽聽
[389]
on average web developers will earn more than聽
game developers a marketing manager for exxon聽聽
[394]
will learn more than a marketing manager聽
for the patriots and an administrative聽聽
[397]
assistant at a bank will earn more than聽
an administrative assistant at vanity fair聽聽
[402]
if you are doing a job to make money you should聽
maximize the amount of money you can get for聽聽
[406]
doing that job you won't see the name on the聽
side of your building from your desk anyway聽聽
[410]
now if making money isn't the most important thing聽
for you when considering a career a boring job聽聽
[415]
still has its perks boring jobs are just genuinely聽
more enjoyable a boring company is more likely to聽聽
[422]
be filled with employees and managers who realize聽
that a job is something people do to put food on聽聽
[426]
the table this type of corporate attitude tends to聽
result in more productive workplace relationships聽聽
[432]
a manager at a generic boring company that has聽
been in their job for decades and has no ambitions聽聽
[436]
of moving up the corporate ladder is not going聽
to take it personally when you ask for a raise聽聽
[441]
a promotion or a reference letter contrast聽
that with a company where the management has聽聽
[445]
drunk though we are changing the world kool-aid聽
and you are much more likely to face opposition聽聽
[449]
when doing these things that all employees聽
should really be doing as regularly as possible聽聽
[454]
time and time again we hear stories about high聽
staff turnover and toxic workplace culture in聽聽
[459]
companies that sound exciting from the outside聽
this is because when managers believe what they聽聽
[463]
are doing is more important than just working a聽
job to make a living they naturally expect their聽聽
[468]
colleagues to work harder than should reasonably聽
be expected to toxic workplace cultures are almost聽聽
[473]
inevitable in environments where managers will聽
think to themselves that straight-up verbal abuse聽聽
[478]
is really just a heated disagreement amongst聽
peers who are too passionate about what they do聽聽
[483]
these types of managers are also much more likely聽
to go unchecked in exciting fields because again聽聽
[488]
staff turnover is not a big deal when there is an聽
endless line of new candidates now before anybody聽聽
[494]
says it in the comments yes you're absolutely聽
right there are great managers and there are聽聽
[499]
terrible managers in every kind of company but聽
you are much more likely to run into one in a聽聽
[504]
job that you thought was going to be exciting and聽
that's the biggest bonus of a boring job better聽聽
[509]
management on average that boring company manager聽
from earlier that has been at the job for a decade聽聽
[515]
will have one big advantage over the manager聽
from an exciting company with high staff turnover聽聽
[520]
they will have more experience at their job聽
working for a manager that has seen every possible聽聽
[525]
problem the job can throw at them is going to be聽
a much more pleasant experience than working for聽聽
[529]
a manager who is figuring it out as they go along聽
a more experienced manager also has less to prove聽聽
[535]
if they feel secure in their own position then聽
they won't feel the need to work their employees聽聽
[539]
to the bone to avoid becoming one of those聽
turnover statistics themselves last month i made聽聽
[544]
a video about why management is always terrible聽
and the reason that video was so important is聽聽
[549]
because people don't quit jobs they quit managers聽
even the best most exciting job in the world would聽聽
[555]
quickly become unbearable with a useless manager聽
that takes their shortcomings out on their workers聽聽
[560]
working a boring job gives you a better chance聽
of finding a good manager who will make your聽聽
[564]
time at work not totally miserable and also help聽
to progress your career so that you can make more聽聽
[569]
money and use that to enjoy the hobbies that other聽
people were dumb enough to try and build a career聽聽
[574]
around i have a theory about why we all love聽
movies like office space or tv shows like parks聽聽
[579]
and rec and the office so much these shows all聽
highlight the realities of a boring workplace to聽聽
[585]
a comically ridiculous degree but at the same time聽
they are also very comfortable places to work the聽聽
[590]
people stick around and even the bad guy bosses聽
are not abusive towards their employees maybe聽聽
[595]
this is an indictment on how low the bar is for聽
what we consider comfortable working arrangements聽聽
[600]
in america but i think it's something more we turn聽
to these kinds of shows for comfort binge watching聽聽
[606]
we wouldn't do that if we didn't secretly think聽
that maybe working alongside these people in these聽聽
[611]
boring offices wouldn't be such a bad thing now if聽
you want to learn more about why good managers are聽聽
[616]
so hard to come by go and watch my video on why聽
company management is always terrible a special聽聽
[622]
thanks again to morningbrew for making it possible聽
for everybody to keep on learning how money works
