I brought in magic cards my husband
[3]
played magic in the 90s okay and at the
[5]
time he made a concerted effort to get a
[9]
whole set he played with his friends and
[12]
played in tournaments okay but then I
[14]
think he wanted to have a complete set
[16]
and so he would buy individual packs of
[19]
the at the store and until he was able
[22]
to put together a complete set he traded
[24]
for some of the cards as well Magic the
[26]
Gathering was created in 1993 by Richard
[29]
Garfield in collaboration with Wizards
[31]
of the coast and it was actually
[32]
considered the first trading card game
[34]
that started the craze so like Pokemon
[36]
yugioh all those card games came
[38]
afterwards after the influence magic had
[41]
on the collected community now when
[43]
magic came out it was the first alpha
[45]
limited set now the Alpha set consisted
[48]
of 295 cards and then there was a second
[51]
reissue called the beta limited set in
[53]
which you have here all cards for the
[55]
beta set which it was limited to three
[57]
hundred and two cards now you've never
[58]
played magic or anything like okay so to
[62]
give you the image just pretend you're
[64]
two dueling wizards and you're gonna be
[66]
summoning some spells you're gonna be
[67]
put bringing outs of creatures and the
[69]
whole point is each player starts with
[71]
twenty life points and the whole goal is
[73]
me as a competing wizard I want to say
[75]
oh I want to drain your life points so
[77]
the first person to bring the other
[78]
opponent to zero wins do you know why we
[80]
have the binder open to this page with
[82]
these nine particular cards no I don't
[85]
okay
[86]
that's like much this is referred to as
[88]
the power nine and the reason why we
[91]
call the power 9 is these are literally
[93]
the most powerful cards in existence in
[95]
the magic world now today the power nine
[98]
are not allowed to be played in decks or
[99]
anything like that unless it's a vintage
[101]
tournament so all of these cards were
[103]
printed in 1993 as part of the beta set
[105]
and after that they went into an
[106]
unlimited printing they just printed and
[108]
printed and printed so by seeing the
[110]
black border the rounded corners and
[113]
these little white dots in the printing
[115]
on each edge of the image that's how
[117]
we're able to tell these are printed in
[118]
1993 part of the original set if you had
[121]
to guess what do you think of value on
[123]
nine cards is a couple hundred dollars a
[125]
couple hundred dollars now because
[126]
they're ungraded now the grade and
[129]
condition of a card significantly
[130]
affects the value that's why we left it
[133]
right in the binder because I don't even
[134]
want to breathe on them let alone touch
[135]
it because the slightest Nick the
[138]
slightest crease all affects the value
[140]
looking at both sides of the cards
[142]
judging the wear I would say they all
[144]
probably range around an 8 out of 10
[146]
condition you might have a 7.5 in there
[148]
but they've all been well taken care of
[150]
for the power 9 right here as they sit
[154]
without professional grading at auction
[155]
you'd be looking at 50 to 75 thousand
[158]
dollars right so out of that 50 to 75
[164]
the Black Lotus which is like the creme
[167]
de la creme
[168]
that's the card everybody wants is 15 to
[170]
20 thousand in its current condition
[172]
okay the second card right here the MOX
[174]
emerald which is one of the five jewel
[176]
cards that you could see here is the
[178]
rarest of them all in its current shape
[180]
you'd be looking at about 8 to 12
[181]
thousand now that's just this page of
[184]
nine cards when it comes to the other
[186]
cards that you have here if you look
[188]
here this card right there volcanic
[189]
island now that is what we refer to as a
[192]
duel land or a duel mana card the cool
[194]
part about that card is it was not
[197]
included in the Alpha set it was only
[199]
issued in the beta set so that's its
[202]
first issue that card alone at auction
[206]
in its current shape would be between
[207]
five and ten thousand dollars in the
[210]
remainder of the binder for all the
[212]
pages that because they're all beta
[213]
cards they're all early 1993 beta cards
[215]
you're looking at an additional ten to
[218]
fifteen thousand dollars so cumulatively
[220]
you're looking at at auction in between
[222]
sixty-five thousand and a hundred
[224]
thousand dollars in trading cards yeah
[226]
so see aren't you happy to lose them in
[228]
your back would you have ever expected
[232]
your husband's trading cards just like
[235]
big cards to me yeah now this is like
[237]
let's send the kids to college kind of
[239]
money right yeah it's literally the best
[242]
culmination of magic cards I've ever
[245]
seen in one setting like it's absolutely
[246]
ridiculous that's why when you came up
[249]
to this town looking at the looking at
[251]
the binder as a clue in the marketplace
[253]
this is hotter than fired the demand for
[255]
these cards is uncontrollable and you
[258]
would absolutely sell them individually
[260]
because if I'm at home and I have five
[262]
out of the nine cards I don't need to
[264]
buy all nine that's a
[265]
ton of money I just need that one or two
[266]
extra card power nine baby unbelievable
[270]
for me this is like looking at a
[271]
painting like you go to the museum it's
[273]
like Oh a red wire
