Channel: `Transverse Audio
[0]
in this video each doll will have a
[2]
section for key features and minimum
[5]
computer requirements then I'll show you
[7]
what the sequencer piano roll and mixer
[10]
look like with a quick overview of their
[13]
features and don't worry none of these
[16]
are free trials or restricted they are
[18]
all 100% free no strings attached

[Music]
[29]
hey everyone Jake from transverse odd
[31]
you here you can find all the links in
[33]
the description below and just in case
[35]
you don't know what a DAW is it's short
[37]
for digital audio workstation
[39]
essentially it's a host for plugins you
[42]
download such as virtual instruments and
[44]
audio effects the first one in this top
[47]
5 is lmms this is a great choice
[51]
regardless of the operating system you
[53]
use with its availability on Windows Mac
[56]
and Linux
[57]
it really makes music production
[58]
accessible to anyone with a computer it
[61]
doesn't use much CPU either but it is a
[64]
very basic digital audio workstation and
[67]
it's even open source meaning it has
[70]
been developed by a bunch of people
[71]
which could include you too if you
[73]
wanted to contribute there is even
[77]
computer keyboard to MIDI which means
[78]
you can play virtual instruments with
[80]
your computer keyboard as if it was a
[82]
piano the sequencer or song arrangement
[90]
window isn't too bad in lmms but it is
[93]
very basic and doesn't offer a lot of
[95]
freedom but it still gets the job done
[97]
and makes it easy to manage your samples
[100]
and patterns
[103]
this is what the piano roll or MIDI
[106]
editor looks like in lmms it's pretty
[109]
clean and easy to use
[111]
and has a great feature that lets you
[112]
write any chord
[115]
based on any scale with one click
[122]
as for the mixer it does have the same
[125]
simplicity but it does come with the
[127]
basics
[130]
even though it looks dead simple it does
[132]
include the ability to make a send track
[134]
or mixbus just like every other DAW on
[137]
this list the one drawback I found to
[141]
kind of suck for the stop is that you
[143]
can't record audio but you can always
[145]
use something like audacity to record
[147]
that and then import the audio files
[150]
into LMMS
[154]
at number 2 we have Sandbridge this da
[157]
started as lumen when it was crowdfunded
[159]
but it has had quite the evolution since
[161]
then this one is available on Windows
[163]
and Mac as both 32 and 64-bit just make
[168]
sure to download your plugins in the
[170]
same bit version as the DAW for them to
[172]
work so for example if you downloaded
[174]
the 32-bit version of Sandbridge you'll
[177]
need to download 32-bit plugins the
[180]
center of this DAW is its sequencer and
[182]
is definitely better than the one in
[185]
lmms you get much more control over the
[187]
tracks and each individual pattern
[192]
it's also directly linked to a panel
[194]
that displays whatever you have selected
[196]
making it very easy to adjust an audio
[199]
file or pattern for audio patterns this
[203]
includes extremely easy pitch time and
[206]
volume controls to name most of them
[211]
and to write notes in those patterns the
[213]
piano roll in soundbridge is good and
[215]
lets you change the length of a MIDI
[217]
note while you draw it instead of after
[220]
in Alma mess but lmms does have some
[224]
features over this one as I mentioned
[225]
with the one-click chords
[230]
last is the mixer and it does have a bit
[233]
more features than the one in lmms but
[235]
they both have their pros and cons I do
[237]
prefer this one though and it even comes
[240]
with a mini view of the mixer that can
[243]
be viewed while the sequencer is open
[245]
the only downside is that it bugs you
[248]
for a donation every time you open the
[250]
da next up we have home studio as far as
[254]
I know it has something no other da has
[256]
real time collaboration this means you
[259]
can work on the same project at the same
[261]
time with more than one person from
[263]
anywhere in the world you can also see
[265]
what anyone is doing in the projects you
[267]
choose to collab on real time
[269]
there's even a general and project based
[273]
chat room in the da so you can talk to
[275]
anyone currently using own studio or
[277]
only those you are collaborating with
[279]
the sequencer has a bunch of flexibility
[282]
though letting you quickly zoom in and
[284]
out of a pattern or the entire playlist
[290]
adjust volume fade points loop and
[294]
resize in both directions I do think
[298]
this has a better sequencer than the
[300]
last two does but the next one it has an
[303]
impressive set of features but with this
[306]
dog comes an interesting piano roll to
[308]
say the least being located in each MIDI
[311]
pattern inside the sequencer itself
[313]
makes it one of a kind quite unusual but
[316]
it's actually not bad at all
[319]
as for the mixer it's pretty
[321]
straightforward and the guides help you
[323]
understand what you can and cannot do
[326]
but it can also be switched over to a
[329]
more analog kind of view
[332]
it even changes focus depending on what
[335]
track you select in the playlist
[338]
the two things I did notice that are a
[340]
bit of a drawback are the fact that you
[343]
can only export to OGG format with the
[346]
free version and you need to be
[348]
connected to the Internet to use this
[350]
dog oh gee gee isn't that bad anyway but
[353]
you can export to wave if you pay 39
[356]
euros for the advanced version of the
[357]
stock if you have used traction t7
[361]
before this may look familiar
[363]
that's because wave form free is the
[365]
latest version of it just with a new
[367]
name what traction as a company does is
[370]
every time they publish a new version of
[372]
their paid dog wave form they will
[375]
typically release an older version of it
[377]
for free now this dog does have the
[379]
ability to use your computer keyboard as
[381]
a MIDI controller but it's kind of a
[383]
hassle and awkward to use but hey at
[390]
least it's there if you need it the
[394]
sequencer in wave form is kind of
[395]
confusing at first but once you get the
[397]
hang of it the workflow isn't all that
[399]
different and it actually has a lot of
[401]
unique features you can anchor the MIDI
[404]
and move the pattern around it or vice
[407]
versa and it's super easy to bounce to
[411]
audio all you have to do is click this
[413]
option and drag it
[417]
waveforms piano roll is really good you
[421]
can adjust the velocity of each note
[422]
when you are drawing it by dragging up
[425]
and down
[426]
and you can adjust the width going right
[428]
and left
[430]
you can even make chords with whatever
[432]
notes you have selected whether it is
[434]
multiple notes or a single note
[439]
as for mixing your audio you can either
[442]
use the integrated mixer to the right of
[444]
the sequencer
[447]
or a dedicated mixer window by going to
[449]
the top right and bringing it into view
[452]
the mixer is quite standard but when it
[455]
comes to making send tracks aka a mix
[457]
bus they are called sub mixes and have
[460]
to be created in the sequencer but can
[464]
then be routed in the mixer or the
[466]
sequencer
[468]
the last da on this list is cakewalk by
[472]
band lab this da was once called sonar
[475]
when it previously cost money but it was
[477]
acquired and made free to use
[480]
from my experience this has got to be
[482]
the best free digital audio workstation
[484]
out there and yes it does have computer
[487]
keyboard to MIDI but it's through a
[488]
window that needs to be the last thing
[490]
selected the downside is that cakewalk
[494]
is only available for 64-bit windows
[496]
with 32-bit plugins support so some of
[500]
the previous options I talked about may
[501]
be your only choice if you can use this
[504]
dog though I would highly recommend it
[506]
in my opinion this da has the best piano
[509]
roll out of the five on this list there
[512]
are a lot of features packed into it and
[514]
it's easy to use and if you are a more
[517]
traditional composer
[518]
it has a great notation editor that you
[521]
can use to write sheet music
[524]
as for the sequencer it is good
[526]
everything is where you need it and
[528]
there are a lot of features including a
[531]
video display to edit the audio with the
[533]
visuals quite unique for a free dog let
[536]
alone any dot in general there is a lot
[539]
you can do with the mixer in cakewalk
[541]
and it has the most features out of all
[543]
the DAWs in the video there is an
[545]
integrated eq window for quick changes
[547]
and it's linked to a main EQ that's
[550]
built into the pro channel on every
[551]
track this includes a compressor the EQ
[555]
I mentioned tube saturation and a
[558]
console emulator oh and the EQ opens up
[561]
into an even bigger EQ to make it easier
[564]
I don't know why they have three
[565]
different sizes but hey now I would have
[569]
mentioned GarageBand but if you have a
[571]
Mac you probably either heard about it
[573]
or have it already but I do think it
[575]
would have made the list otherwise so be
[578]
sure to check it out if you use a Mac
[579]
especially if you are interested in
[581]
using Logic Pro in the future
[584]
I hope this free software helps you make
[585]
some great music sound effects or other
[588]
audio related projects don't forget to
[590]
subscribe if you enjoyed this one and as
[592]
always thanks for watching
