Charitable giving and donor behavior has changed聽 significantly over the past one to two years,聽聽
[6]
with some pretty big implications for non-profit聽 fundraising. So if you are starting a non-profit,聽聽
[13]
or leading a non-profit, or fundraising for a聽 non-profit, it's really important for you to be聽聽
[18]
on top of these charitable giving trends so聽 that you can adjust your non-profit fundraising聽聽
[24]
strategy as needed in order to succeed. So in this聽 video, I'm going to talk through five of those聽聽
[29]
charitable giving trends from recent reports to聽 help you think through your nonprofit fundraising聽聽
[34]
strategy for the next couple of years. Welcome!聽 If we haven't met yet, my name is Amber Melanie聽聽
[39]
Smith and I am a non-profit founder and executive聽 director. I've been doing fundraising for many聽聽
[44]
years and growing my organization from zero so I聽 have really tried to stay on top of these trends聽聽
[51]
and pay attention to things that might impact my聽 fundraising efforts and the fundraising efforts of聽聽
[57]
other nonprofits that I care about. I hope that聽 you find this video helpful - don't forget to聽聽
[61]
give it a like and subscribe to my channel for聽 more content all about starting a non-profit,聽聽
[66]
fundraising, creating a social impact through聽 social entrepreneurship and other types of聽聽
[71]
projects and just making a difference in the聽 world! And as always if you're looking for more聽聽
[76]
support or want to learn more about me check out聽 my website, FounderToFullTime.com. So charitable聽聽
[81]
giving and how when and why donors might choose聽 to give their money to a particular cause聽聽
[88]
naturally evolves over time but just like the聽 COVID-19 pandemic has affected everything else,聽聽
[95]
the pandemic has accelerated some of the聽 charitable giving trends and caused some聽聽
[101]
interesting changes in other donor behavior. So聽 we're going to talk about that. So these five聽聽
[106]
trends I'm going to talk about have really emerged聽 and accelerated just over the past one or two聽聽
[112]
years during the COVID-19 pandemic and I'm going聽 to talk for each of them about what that trend is,聽聽
[118]
and also its implications and its impacts on聽 your fundraising. All right let's jump in.聽聽
[124]
Trend number one probably won't surprise you that聽 much but it is that a non-profit's online presence聽聽
[131]
is even more important than it was before. I mean聽 it's 2021, so having the basics like a website a聽聽
[139]
social media presence etc. are must-haves for聽 all organizations at this point in order to get聽聽
[145]
discovered and for donors and supporters to engage聽 with you. It's just you just have to have it at聽聽
[149]
this point but because in 2020 and 2021 people聽 started doing things more virtually and remotely聽聽
[158]
including looking up non-profit information this聽 online presence for a non-profit just increased聽聽
[165]
in value according to Fidelity Charitable's 2021聽 Future of Philanthropy report 57 of people made聽聽
[175]
their donations through the organization's website聽 in the past couple of years so i found myself not聽聽
[182]
actually too surprised by that that number that聽 57 of people donating through a nonprofit's聽聽
[188]
website but what the part that actually聽 surprised me was the stat that came after that聽聽
[193]
which was that 18 of the donors that were聽 surveyed as part of this report so that that was聽聽
[199]
more often than they ever had before the pandemic聽 so people's behavior is increasingly moving聽聽
[206]
online and through non-profits website聽 is where those donations are being made聽聽
[210]
couple of other notable statistics from this聽 research 33 percent of donors used online聽聽
[217]
resources to research a non-profit before deciding聽 to make a donation and 19 of those surveyed also聽聽
[225]
shared a non-profit's posts on social media so聽 here are the implications for your non-profit聽聽
[232]
fundraising efforts number one hopefully pretty聽 obviously you need to make sure that your website聽聽
[238]
is not just attractively designed but also聽 really easy to navigate especially the pages聽聽
[244]
that facilitate donations you can frustrate聽 a donor to the point where they will just not聽聽
[251]
make a donation even if they had already landed聽 on your donation page if your donation page is聽聽
[256]
too complicated to understand or use or does not聽 function properly the second thing you want to do聽聽
[262]
to make sure that you are staying ahead of聽 this trend is there are websites out there聽聽
[267]
that review non-profits like charity navigator聽 or guide star that provide information about聽聽
[274]
non-profit organizations to the public you want聽 to make sure that your nonprofit's profiles聽聽
[279]
on those websites are up to date and accurate and聽 have the latest compelling inspiring and wonderful聽聽
[286]
information about your cause possible because聽 people are looking up your organization on those聽聽
[290]
sites so you want to make sure it represents who聽 you are and what you do to the in the best way聽聽
[297]
possible and the third part is also probably聽 pretty obvious but you want to make sure that聽聽
[301]
you're keeping your social media pages up to date聽 and posting to at least some degree of frequency聽聽
[308]
make sure that your posts are engaging and聽 interesting with decent quality photos and聽聽
[314]
things that are personal tell a lot of stories聽 and share your impacts and offer opportunities聽聽
[319]
for people to comment and engage with your posts聽 all right so trend number two is that the issues聽聽
[325]
that donors care most about supporting are聽 evolving according to this same report fidelity's聽聽
[332]
report on the future philanthropy the specific聽 issue areas and global issues and community issues聽聽
[338]
that donors are prioritizing to give their money聽 to has shifted over the past couple of years one聽聽
[344]
interesting point that this report makes is that聽 one of the issues that has consistently remained聽聽
[352]
high in priorities for donors is this issue聽 area of basic needs that is housing food hunger聽聽
[361]
shelter clothing etc so your basic needs as a聽 human being this has always been ranked highly聽聽
[366]
and is pretty consistently so and the report makes聽 the point that many of the issues that donors聽聽
[373]
face or are asked to support are very very聽 complicated basic needs is pretty simple pretty聽聽
[377]
cut and dry so what we can possibly glean聽 from that is that the easier to understand聽聽
[383]
that your issue is is the more likely your issue聽 might get support what's really interesting and聽聽
[389]
i'll show you the the graph the chart that聽 they had in the report here in a second聽聽
[394]
was that they tracked the trends on how donors聽 priorities shifted over like five or six different聽聽
[400]
key areas over the past couple of years so the聽 issues that donors said were less of a priority聽聽
[409]
since the pandemic started and those that became聽 more of a priority to them so let's take a look at聽聽
[415]
that according to their findings between 2020 and聽 2021 donors dramatically shifted their interest聽聽
[421]
in five major areas that's they prioritized聽 hunger economic development and racial聽聽
[428]
discrimination these became higher priorities for聽 donors and treatment of cures and diseases and聽聽
[436]
clean water and sanitation actually decreased in聽 prioritization by donors all right so what does聽聽
[442]
this information mean for non-profit fundraisers聽 okay so if your nonprofit is already working聽聽
[449]
on one of the issues i mentioned that donors are聽 increasingly prioritizing then keep at it keep聽聽
[456]
sharing your stories showcasing the impacts聽 of your organization and also see if there聽聽
[462]
are opportunities to invest in your organization's聽 capacity and infrastructure so that you can grow聽聽
[468]
and also become stronger as an organization聽 if in the future donors de-prioritize聽聽
[475]
these issues if your non-profit is working on聽 one of the issues that donors prioritization聽聽
[480]
has remained steady in or has even decreased聽 don't get discouraged the issues that are more聽聽
[488]
prevalent and frequently discussed in the media聽 tend to be the ones that people gravitate towards聽聽
[495]
supporting in a given year so here's my advice to聽 you if you're in this situation whenever possible聽聽
[501]
engage your public and talk to the media about how聽 the issue that you are tackling as a non-profit聽聽
[507]
actually impacts one or more of those other issues聽 that is getting more attention right now we know聽聽
[514]
that no social issue exists in asylum things聽 are highly highly interconnected for example聽聽
[521]
if your non-profit is tackling that issue of聽 clean water and sanitation one of the ones that聽聽
[529]
donors deprioritized for support over the past聽 couple of years then talk about how that issue聽聽
[536]
is also intertwined with and affected by and聽 affects the issues that they prioritize such as聽聽
[543]
economic development and food insecurity聽 these things are all connected to each other聽聽
[547]
and another piece of advice that you'll probably聽 hear me repeating several times because it's just聽聽
[552]
so true and helpful and that is to become really聽 good storytellers of showcasing your impacts and聽聽
[558]
the stories of the peoples whose lives you're聽 transforming as an organization in the work聽聽
[564]
that you're doing trend number three surprised聽 me a little bit and that is that despite the聽聽
[569]
digital age that we live in word of mouth is聽 still a really really important marketing tool聽聽
[576]
while obviously a strong online presence and聽 social media is really important word of mouth聽聽
[583]
or hearing about a cause from someone you know or聽 a friend is still one of the biggest ways people聽聽
[589]
find out about your organization and might聽 choose to support it according to classes聽聽
[594]
why america gives 2021 report 67 percent of donors聽 are likely to find new causes to support based on聽聽
[603]
the recommendations of friends and family and聽 this has always made some amount of sense to me聽聽
[610]
people trust other people with whom they have聽 relationships so even when you're thinking of聽聽
[616]
you know what plumber to use or um what item聽 to buy you might trust the recommendation of聽聽
[623]
a friend more than you might even trust your own聽 research online so social capital you know people聽聽
[630]
talking to each other and those relationships聽 have a strong impact on who gets some support聽聽
[638]
from um from donors and so you really want to聽 kind of be aware of that and see what you can do聽聽
[643]
about it to encourage people to spread the word聽 to their friends so here is what you do here is聽聽
[648]
the implication for nonprofit fundraising聽 you have to make sure that interactions聽聽
[653]
with your organization and experiences聽 that people have with your organization聽聽
[658]
are positive you're giving them a so to speak good聽 customer service experience people will remember聽聽
[666]
how an interchange with your organization made聽 them feel and if it made them feel good they're聽聽
[672]
going to tell their friends about it so what that聽 means is and i hope that you would do this anyway聽聽
[678]
but you know um you want to just show extreme聽 kindness to everyone you interact with make聽聽
[684]
sure that they feel welcomed included safe have聽 a great experience have fun if if that's possible聽聽
[693]
and also you want to make sure that the messaging聽 that you share with them is easy to remember it's聽聽
[700]
not too complicated because even if someone really聽 loves your organization and had a great experience聽聽
[706]
with you if they can't remember how to explain聽 it to others that's going to be a barrier that聽聽
[710]
might prevent them from telling someone about you聽 all right trend number four donors are interested聽聽
[717]
in tracking results especially millennials聽 so according to fidelity's report donors are聽聽
[724]
increasingly interested in seeing the specific聽 measurable results and impacts of the causes聽聽
[732]
that they support and this is especially true of聽 millennials 66 of the people who identified as聽聽
[741]
millennials infidelities survey said that tracking聽 results going back and looking at the results and聽聽
[748]
the shared and published stories and impacts of a聽 non-profit that they supported is something that聽聽
[754]
these donors did and we know that this is聽 increasing because 40 percent of gen x and聽聽
[761]
32 of baby boomers said that they did this so it聽 seems to be something that the younger generations聽聽
[768]
are interested in will be interested to see聽 you know what gen z is all about and if they聽聽
[773]
you know follow the same pattern one comment the聽 report made that i found really interesting and聽聽
[779]
i know rang true for me personally was that聽 donors especially younger donors today are聽聽
[786]
viewing donations as investments in solving聽 a problem that they see in the world and聽聽
[793]
i've always felt this way personally and i i feel聽 like that's how donations should be viewed i mean聽聽
[797]
non-profits are charged with addressing a need and聽 tackling a problem and donations should help the聽聽
[804]
organization be able to do that effectively and so聽 yeah i view donations as something that's like an聽聽
[810]
investment and you the organization should be held聽 accountable for its impacts so what does this mean聽聽
[816]
for non-profit fundraising efforts well hopefully聽 as an organization you're already tracking your聽聽
[821]
results throughout the year you've put systems聽 and processes in place to understand how you are聽聽
[827]
helping others and how many people or animals you聽 are helping so assuming you have all that in order聽聽
[834]
your next step is to make sure that people know聽 about it make sure that you are showcasing those聽聽
[839]
results up front on your website you're talking聽 about that them on social media you are making um聽聽
[847]
you know you're you're creating stories and聽 content all about those impact so make those聽聽
[851]
pieces of information easy to find and bonus聽 points if you can display that information in聽聽
[857]
a visually appealing way like an infographic or a聽 cool video or some really high quality photography聽聽
[863]
the fifth trend is that donations are more often聽 made through mobile devices classy says that of聽聽
[872]
those donors who made online donations over half聽 58 of them did so through their mobile device聽聽
[879]
this is pretty big and has some pretty practical聽 implications for non-profits and fundraising聽聽
[884]
it means that you have to make sure that your聽 nonprofits website but especially the donation聽聽
[889]
page is mobile friendly it's responsive and looks聽 good on a smartphone and if you're not sure if it聽聽
[895]
is all you have to do is pick up your phone and聽 go to your organization's website and take a look聽聽
[901]
at it is it attractive is it easy to use and聽 navigate is it responsive on the donation page聽聽
[912]
are the fields where you would enter in the amount聽 you want to donate and your name and your credit聽聽
[916]
card information all that are those easy to聽 use fields are they popping up in the correct聽聽
[922]
spaces all of that good stuff so if it is not you聽 know that you have some work to do on that area聽聽
[928]
another thing you can do is lean into this聽 trend and think of some creative ways that you聽聽
[933]
could further engage donors through their mobile聽 device for example maybe you want to experiment聽聽
[938]
with requesting donations via text so there are聽 lots of great platforms out there that can help聽聽
[944]
facilitate this sometimes low cost or even free聽 so i'd love to hear what you think have you seen聽聽
[950]
these trends in action have they been affecting聽 your non-profit and your fundraising efforts聽聽
[956]
leave your thoughts in the comments below聽 especially if you have more ideas on how folks聽聽
[963]
doing non-profit fundraising could capitalize on聽 these trends to have greater success we'd love聽聽
[968]
