Out of the Furnace begins with the story of a聽
man named Harlan DeGroat who is seen watching a聽聽

movie in his car in a park. He was accompanied by聽
his female friend who was laughing at him. Unable聽聽

to accept being belittled by his female friends,聽
Harlan banged the woman's face against the car's聽聽
[40]
dashboard. The commotion was heard by the man who聽
was also watching in the garden. Then, the man聽聽
[45]
defends Harlan's girlfriend and a fight ensues.聽
Unfortunately, the man was beaten badly by Harlan.聽聽
[51]
Elsewhere, a man named Russell Baze works at聽
a Pennsylvania steel mill. Russell saw his聽聽
[56]
younger brother, Rodney Baze Jr.'s car, parked聽
outside the racetrack on his way home from work.聽聽

Russell got out of the car and approached him.聽
Rodney just lost a horse racing bet. Seeing this,聽聽
[66]
Russell asked his brother where he got the money聽
to place a bet. Rodney then admitted that he聽聽
[70]
borrowed money from a loan shark named John聽
Petty who owned a bar and ran illegal things.聽聽

Russell was annoyed with his brother's聽
behavior who had owed him just to gamble.聽聽

However, he did not have the heart to scold聽
the behavior of his only brother whom he loved.聽聽

The next day, Russell visited his father who聽
was lying sick. His father is cared for at home聽聽

by his uncle, Red Baze. There Russell also聽
met Rodney, who turned out to be a military聽聽

member and would soon be assigned to Iraq. After聽
visiting his father, Russell then visited John,聽聽

the moneylender who had lent money to his聽
brother. When he was about to enter John's room,聽聽

it turned out that John was with a guest who聽
spoke in a threatening tone. The guest was Harlan.聽聽

his old job at a Pennsylvania steel mill while聽
Rodney is seen taking part in an illegal fight.聽聽

Rodney looks quite difficult to overcome his聽
opponent. Several times he fell to the ground and聽聽

was hit quite hard. However, things turned around聽
after his opponent insulted his mother. Rodney's聽聽

anger was provoked. He seemed to gain additional聽
energy until finally he could win the fight.聽聽

As it turned out, his participation in this聽
illegal fight was to pay off his debts to聽聽

John that had accumulated. Seeing Rodney聽
winning in this fight, John was actually聽聽

annoyed because he had bet on Rodney's defeat,聽
and now he had a loss. Then, John advises聽聽

Rodney who he thinks is unsuitable for being a聽

In the afternoon, Rodney visited John at聽
his bar. There he begged John to register聽聽

himself in the fight to pay his debts. At聽
first, John is reluctant to register Rodney聽聽

because the risks are high, and the fight's聽
organizers are notoriously fraudulent. However,聽聽

because Rodney continued to insist, finally聽
he was willing to fulfill Rodney's request.聽聽

Later, John calls Harlan, the man who arranged the聽
fight to include Rodney in the next illegal fight.聽聽

Elsewhere, Russell is seen meeting with Lena. He聽
begs her so they can be together again. However,聽聽

Lena rejects Russell, especially since she is聽
pregnant because of her relationship with Wesley.聽聽

While crying, the two embraced.聽
Russell was trying to let Lena go.聽聽

After meeting Lena, he then visits the聽
crash site when he crashes into a car.聽聽

He laid a wreath to offer his condolences to聽
the accident victims. The next day, he meets his聽聽

uncle, Red, who takes him hunting in the forest.聽
Feeling tired, he obeyed his uncle's invitation.聽聽

Elsewhere, Rodney is seen with John to meet聽
Harlan, who underestimates Rodney's fighting聽聽

ability because of his stature and looks that聽
are not like a fighter. Hearing Harlan's taunts,聽聽

Rodney gets angry and challenges him to prove聽
that he is capable enough to take part in an聽聽

illegal fight. Luckily, John was able to resolve聽
the dispute. Later, John took Rodney out and asked聽聽

him to talk. He asks Rodney to give up in the next聽
fight because that's what he and Harlan agree.聽聽

Rodney was silent because he was still mad at聽
Harlan. He hadn't decided if he would give in.聽聽

Moments later, Rodney began to fight. His fiery聽
rage allows him to attack well and overwhelm his聽聽

opponent. Seeing this, John gave a stern warning聽
to Rodney to give in. Rodney then obeyed John's聽聽

wishes. He didn't fight back at all when he was聽
attacked. However, his opponent beat him blindly,聽聽

forcing John into the battle arena to save Rodney.聽
After the game, Harlan approaches John and says聽聽

that his business is done because Harlan won the聽
bet money in the fight that was fought by Rodney.聽聽

Then, they went home. John was relieved to聽
not have to deal with Harlan in the car.聽聽

Unfortunately, his estimate was wrong because on聽
the way their car was intercepted by Harlan and聽聽

his men. Harlan then approached John's car which聽
had stopped at the end of the bridge. When John聽聽

saw Harlan, his cell phone accidentally fell under聽
the car seat and connected his bartender's number聽聽
[433]
to voicemail. Then, through the car window, Harlan聽
brought his face closer to John and said he wasn't聽聽
[438]
done, then he shot him dead. Harlan ordered his聽
men to drag Rodney and take him to a warehouse.聽聽
[444]
That night, Russell, who had returned from聽
hunting, entered Rodney's room. He finds聽聽
[448]
a letter. In the letter, Rodney apologized to聽
Russell for not taking his advice not to fight.聽聽
[453]
He promised that the fight he would live his last聽
fight. After this fight, he promised to work in聽聽
[457]
a metal factory. At the same time, Rodney is聽
being tortured by Harlan's men. As Harlan walked聽聽
[463]
into the barn, he asked Rodney to see his face.聽
However, Rodney actually mocked Harlan by calling聽聽

with John at the time of his death. Even though聽

Wesley and the police of incompetence in handling聽

and his uncle immediately went to the location聽
of the fight. Unfortunately, they found no one聽聽

there. Later that night, Russell visits a parking聽
area and pretends to buy drugs from Harlan's men.聽聽

At first, they are reluctant to serve Russell聽
because they think he is an undercover cop, though聽聽
[552]
they end up taking him to Harlan's headquarters.聽
However, because many people were in the place, he聽聽
[557]
didn't recognize Harlan. His mission must end in聽
failure. While Russell was driving with his uncle,聽聽
[562]
a local policeman stopped him. The cop received聽
orders from Wesley to ask Harlan to get out of聽聽
[567]
there as soon as possible. The policeman also聽
added that these people are known to take the聽聽
[571]
law into their own hands and are not friendly with聽
people outside their area. The cop would escort聽聽
[576]
Russell and his uncle until they were out of聽
the area. If they disobeyed, the policeman would聽聽

arrest them. Russell and his uncle were forced聽
to obey the police's orders and return home.聽聽

A few days later, Wesley was waiting for him聽
at the factory exit after work. There, he said聽聽
[590]
police had found Rodney's body buried in the聽
woods. Hearing this, Russell tried to be strong.聽聽

That evening, Wesley and Lena visit聽
Russell's house and offer their condolences.聽聽

Lena asks Russell not to investigate Rodney's聽
death alone and leaves the case to the police.聽聽

Several months passed, Russell tried to live聽
a normal life. Although he gets word that聽聽

the police have raided Harlan's house,聽
Harlan's whereabouts are still unknown.聽聽

After waiting for months to no avail, finally,聽
Russell decided to take matters into his own聽聽

hands. He sneaks into John's office to find out聽
information about Harlan. There he found Harlan's聽聽
[628]
phone number and called him right away. He asked聽
Harlan to come to the bar, where John's office聽聽
[633]
was. He said he would pay John's remaining聽
debts. That night, Harlan came to the bar聽聽
[638]
accompanied by one of his men. He carried a very聽
large bag and entered through the back street.聽聽
[642]
Russell who had been lurking directly approached聽
the bar door with a gun. Inside, the bar bartender聽聽
[647]
is threatened and interrogated by Harlan who asks聽
for information about the person who called him.聽聽
[652]
The clueless bartender was shot by Harlan. Russell聽
manages to incapacitate Harlan's men in another聽聽
[657]
room and prepares to shoot him. However, Harlan聽
fired his gun so hard that Russell had to take聽聽
[662]
cover. Unfortunately, when Harlan managed to get聽
out, the car could not be started because it had聽聽
[666]
been sabotaged. He was forced to run away from聽
his car and hide in an empty factory. Russell聽聽
[671]
followed him and they fought. Russell manages to聽
shoot Harlan in the leg, but he can still stand.聽聽
[677]
Russell then asked him to walk into the forest. In聽
the distance Wesley had arrived and asked Russell聽聽
[682]
to stop his actions. However, Russell paid no heed聽
to the warning. When Harlan was seen walking away,聽聽
[687]
he shot Harlan in the back and killed him. At聽
the end of the film, Russell is seen at his聽聽
[692]
house. After killing Harlan, he was not imprisoned聽
because Wesley stood up for him and arranged for聽聽
[697]
Russell to be acquitted. From this film, we can聽
learn that gambling does not bring us riches,聽聽
[702]
but it will lead us to a tragedy that can threaten聽
our lives. So much debt is borrowed just to be聽聽
[706]
spent. Gambling did not make Rodney able to pay聽
his debts. Sometimes, getting a low-paying job聽聽
[712]
is better because at least it can keep us out聽
of trouble even if it doesn't make us rich.
