ONLY IN FRANCE | Expatriate Life in France | French Culture Shocks - YouTube
Channel: Not Even French
[0]
sallie YouTube I'm back with another
[2]
video about French culture sharks about
[5]
random things that I notice while living
[6]
in France about those things that stand
[8]
out to me as being super French as you
[11]
guys know if you've been following me
[12]
for a while I do live in Paris if you're
[15]
new here hi I'm Rosie but I have spent a
[17]
lot of time in the South of France I've
[19]
traveled a lot around France I visited
[21]
many many different regions so I may
[24]
have a prison bias sometimes but in
[26]
general I try and talk about things a
[29]
little bit more generally as well when I
[31]
can these kinds of videos honestly some
[33]
of my favorite videos to do because
[34]
you've constantly got that mirror
[36]
against which you're sort of confronted
[37]
to be like oh wow that's different
[39]
oh that's cool oh that's weird and it's
[42]
a whole lot of fun so without further
[44]
ado let's get stuck into it
[46]
[Music]
[53]
you
[54]
[Music]
[59]
so one of the things that I have noticed
[61]
about French people is that travelling
[64]
long distances things being far away is
[68]
more of a problem than what I'm used to
[71]
I often hear you know when you're
[73]
talking about holidays they're like no
[75]
we're missing one silly one say one
[79]
comment literally that means it is long
[81]
but it's far away soon long and it seems
[84]
to be a real disappointment of things
[86]
only one you know or or a real bonus if
[89]
that hard one if I'm not far away so
[91]
like you know often hear them saying
[93]
what I like about Italy is that it
[94]
Sceptile one it's not far away and you
[97]
can have a nice holiday for example for
[99]
us in New Zealand things being far away
[102]
as part of the attraction the further
[104]
away the bitter the further away the
[107]
more exciting the more different the
[109]
more chance that you're going to
[111]
encounter something completely
[113]
unexpected we're also a country that
[115]
enjoys doing road trips for example
[117]
driving six hours to another town to
[121]
spend the weekend that's that's cool you
[124]
know
[124]
it's part of the lifestyle road trips
[126]
going away for a week going away for the
[128]
weekend you're prepared to travel long
[131]
distances and I don't know many French
[133]
people that would enjoy doing that would
[135]
do it without complaining about it and
[137]
saying that French people travel a lot
[139]
you'll find them everywhere you'll find
[140]
them in New Zealand of course but I have
[142]
noticed that this is one of the first
[144]
questions they ask say well how long did
[146]
it take you to get there you know and I
[148]
feel like all four hours like well you
[151]
know and I I have noticed that it's kind
[153]
of a thing if a French and you know why
[155]
can you please let me know down below
[156]
that'd be awesome
[158]
the second thing I want to talk about is
[159]
that I feel like there's a slightly
[161]
different approach to eating fruit here
[163]
in France I feel like in general they
[165]
peel everything you'll peel an apple and
[168]
then cut it into slices before eating it
[170]
for example which we obviously do for
[172]
small children and stuff in New Zealand
[174]
but as an adult I'll just like take an
[176]
apple and I'll just bite straight into
[179]
it with my teeth whereas I find in
[181]
France they use knives they'll use the
[182]
knives to peel it and they'll use the
[184]
knives to chop it into pieces as well as
[187]
the same for peers and
[188]
and peaches and I feel like there's a
[190]
particular approach to eating fruit in
[193]
this way they'll also peel vegetables
[194]
they'll peel cucumbers for example
[197]
before chopping them up to put them into
[199]
salads and we were always taught that
[201]
the skin of the fruit is where 90% of
[205]
the nutrients are held actually so for
[208]
us in general I mean we tend to keep the
[211]
skin on things and I don't know maybe
[213]
it's kind of seen as rude to just be
[216]
crunching into like a piece of fruit
[218]
with your teeth like home you know like
[220]
taking a big bite out of something maybe
[222]
it's you know it's maybe he's not so
[224]
sophisticated I don't know I don't know
[226]
if that has anything at all to do with
[227]
it again if you're French can you let me
[229]
know if I'm onto something here is that
[231]
kind of true or is it just the
[233]
experiences that I've had make enough
[235]
food and especially being a girl what
[237]
I've noticed about the French and
[238]
something that I really appreciate about
[240]
them as well is that they don't sort of
[241]
deconstruct their food like we do in
[244]
more anglo-saxon cultures I feel like
[246]
we're very much into like okay you need
[248]
to eat 50 grams of carbohydrates and a
[250]
hundred grams of protein and 20 grams of
[252]
fat and it's very kind of strict around
[255]
what kind of food you're eating and when
[259]
so there's a lot of people going for the
[260]
six meals a day or you know there's all
[262]
sorts of theories around it and people
[264]
are often talking about it like oh I ate
[266]
way too many carbs today or I haven't
[268]
had enough protein today or oh there's
[270]
lots of good fats and the salad I just
[273]
feel like sometimes it's a bit of a
[274]
layer of complexity it's something that
[275]
you can get quite hung up on and what
[279]
I've noticed in France is it I never
[280]
ever ever hear about them talking about
[283]
grams of food about proteins about carbs
[286]
about fats about this kind of thing um I
[289]
just feel like there's a general
[290]
approach to eating and balance and I
[293]
went into a lot of this in detail in my
[294]
video around why French people don't get
[296]
fat which I'll link up here as well I
[298]
feel like because they've gone through
[299]
food education from such a young age
[302]
they just sort of intrinsically know
[304]
what a balanced meal looks like they'll
[307]
have meat vegetables maybe a bit of
[309]
a yogurt of fruit you know over the
[311]
course of their lunch time and I mean
[314]
they eat variety they tend to eat quite
[316]
a few different things and so yeah I
[318]
just kind of find them a little bit this
[319]
obsessed my next point is something a
[321]
little bit random but it really annoys
[323]
me is that they're hardly ever mirrors
[326]
in the changing rooms so when you try
[328]
and close on you're forced to go outside
[331]
and front of everyone and certainly in
[333]
front of the sales assistant to see what
[336]
it looks like and I always feel so
[337]
uncomfortable I almost always felt
[339]
pressure to save the sales assistant
[341]
that it's okay or I like it even if I
[343]
hate it or I just don't really like if
[346]
there are people kind of waiting there's
[348]
like the boyfriends and the husbands
[350]
that have been dragged along and you
[351]
kind of go out and people kind of like I
[354]
don't know the board so they look at
[355]
what you're wearing and I don't really
[357]
like it I just prefer to like when I'm
[359]
when I'm in a clothes store I just want
[361]
to be alone I want to be able to try
[363]
things on see how they fit and really
[366]
like you know try a few different poses
[368]
especially you know if you want to see
[370]
how your bum looks in your jeans all
[372]
that kind of thing I don't feel as
[374]
comfortable being able to do that out in
[375]
the open and it's very rare that I come
[378]
across a cubicle where I've got a mirror
[380]
and I don't have to show anyone
[382]
are there any French women out there do
[384]
you also find it annoying or is it just
[386]
me the last little sort of random thing
[388]
that I've noticed about life in France
[389]
and I wanted to talk about is that I
[391]
find it really hard to say no to
[393]
receipts here so when you know when you
[396]
whenever you buy something you go
[397]
grocery shopping or your to store like
[399]
just default in France they'll always
[402]
print the receipt and so if you pay by
[405]
card they've always print a first
[406]
receipt tear it off then give it back to
[410]
you with your card and then they print
[412]
another one for them and in New Zealand
[415]
we often have a choice they ask us would
[417]
you like a receipt and of course you
[419]
know in the interests of the environment
[421]
and you know saving the trees most of
[424]
the time people say no there's there's
[426]
no need to have a receipt we've got our
[427]
online banking and in France they don't
[429]
ask you if you'd like a receipt or not
[431]
and they just give it to you and I've
[433]
had a few occasions where access to them
[435]
actually no thank you I don't actually
[436]
want my receipt or no thank you please
[438]
don't
[438]
the receipt whatever and they were
[440]
really pissed off with me they were just
[441]
like oh you know like one time I was
[443]
like oh no they care don't want the
[444]
receipt and they were like well what am
[446]
I meant to do with it you know so I just
[448]
could you please just put it in the bin
[450]
I mean I I don't want to take it in my
[451]
wallet and have like lots of papers in
[453]
my wallet obviously I think asking them
[456]
to put it in the bin for me was maybe a
[457]
little bit derogatory for them I don't
[459]
know like that it definitely didn't go
[461]
down well and so what it means is that
[462]
it's kind of like it's hard to say no to
[464]
receipts and in my wallet I've always
[466]
got lots of paper and lots of receipts
[467]
that I clear out anything it's not
[469]
really cool for the environment that you
[471]
always get a receipt by default well
[474]
guys that's another video done with some
[476]
of the random things that I've noticed
[477]
in France if you like these kinds of
[479]
videos if you enjoy hearing about little
[482]
cultural differences or little lifestyle
[484]
differences in new countries please give
[486]
this video a thumbs up or give me a
[488]
comment down below so that I know I'll
[490]
see you guys next time on next week's
[491]
video a bientot
