[5]
hi everyone uh thanks for watching uh my
[8]
name is nitish i'm a partner with
[10]
everest group and i lead our focus on
[12]
i.t and digital services
[14]
uh in the european region i have with me
[16]
today a special guest uh anik uh who's
[19]
one of our senior analysts and focuses
[21]
more specifically on the life sciences
[23]
technology landscape uh anit thanks for
[25]
joining us today
[27]
hi nitish it's a pleasure joining you
[30]
perfect uh so any you know you authored
[32]
a very interesting analysis recently
[35]
which focuses on how life sciences firms
[37]
are approaching this concept of
[38]
sustainability now for those of you
[41]
watching we have been looking at
[42]
sustainability and impact sourcing in a
[45]
more programmatic sense in the last 18
[47]
to 24 months and you know contrary to
[50]
what people might assume in life
[52]
sciences it's not just planet or
[54]
environment which uh you know large life
[57]
sciences corporations are focusing on
[59]
but it's actually the sustainability
[61]
aspect in social uh you know if you
[63]
really look at the three aspects of
[64]
environmental social and governance
[66]
social sustainability is really of prime
[68]
focus here and that's very interesting
[70]
to me you know just looking at the space
[72]
life sciences occupies sony you know
[74]
this is slightly different to other
[76]
industries that we've studied such as
[78]
bfs or banking and financial services as
[81]
well as the broader technology services
[82]
landscape so you know what's really
[85]
behind the scenes as you look at the
[86]
sustainability focus on social aspects
[89]
and life sciences
[92]
hi nitish hi everyone that's a very
[94]
interesting point that you mentioned
[97]
and let me talk a couple of points here
[100]
if you look nitish historically even
[102]
though it was not called out as social
[104]
sustainability but life sciences have
[106]
been focused on developing drugs helping
[108]
people with their healthcare
[109]
infrastructure or vaccines so they have
[112]
been aligned to that pillar more closely
[114]
i would say than any other industry but
[116]
why the certain call or as you see in
[118]
this slide the mentions of the
[120]
sustainability social sustainability in
[122]
the filings
[124]
have increased more than the
[125]
environmental sustainability according
[127]
to me and also as part of the research
[129]
that has gone through in this viewpoint
[131]
it's primarily because of the response
[134]
that the industry gave to the covet
[136]
pandemic the pandemic had brought few
[138]
topics to the limelight like the idea of
[140]
vaccine equity uh accessing medication
[143]
or medicines and healthcare in certain
[145]
remote areas or remote geographies then
[149]
pricing of medicine the the acceleration
[152]
of clinical trials including diversity
[154]
and these all these sub items do come
[157]
under the social pillar so if we group
[159]
them and ask someone where are you
[161]
focusing they would definitely say it's
[162]
the social pillar of the sustainability
[164]
and that's why it has increased i would
[166]
say with the other pillars
[169]
along with it going in parallel
[171]
yeah i think i mean that's a great point
[173]
i think life sciences in the last few
[175]
years has generally been coming closer
[177]
to the healthcare aspect of things in
[180]
terms of working with payers and
[181]
providers but i think the last two years
[183]
especially the response the life
[185]
sciences firms had to the pandemic in
[188]
terms of you know getting a vaccine
[190]
through in record time but also the
[192]
issues it highlighted with global
[194]
inequality uh you know put us in an
[196]
interesting position and it's an
[197]
important time to have this conversation
[199]
and as others can see you know this
[201]
looks at annual and quarterly filings by
[203]
life sciences large life sciences
[205]
corporations globally uh where focus on
[208]
social sustainability outranks
[209]
environmentally again we're not saying
[211]
environmental is not important it's just
[213]
the relative pecking order given the
[215]
space life scientists forms occupy you
[217]
know
[218]
having spoken about that any uh you know
[220]
what it brings me to the next question
[222]
and a thought which is what exactly are
[225]
life sciences firms trying to do in
[227]
social sustainability are there a few
[229]
pillars or a few areas where they're
[231]
trying to do this more versus others
[234]
definitely and i was expecting that as
[236]
the next and as the analyst always love
[239]
double clicking so let me double click
[240]
on the social sustainability fact
[243]
we have three themes and we have grouped
[245]
these initiatives if you see under three
[247]
themes first would be accessibility and
[249]
affordability which majorly talks about
[252]
taking medicine and drugs to the people
[254]
and giving them at a fair price and
[256]
that's where you see the ideas of
[258]
inclusivity in trials value-based
[260]
pricing the second is trust and safety
[263]
whether we are tackling counterfeit
[265]
drugs whether we are increasing supply
[267]
chain transparency and finally like
[270]
every other industry though life
[271]
sciences have got this tag of being a
[273]
regard but innovation is there and that
[276]
would help in developing therapies for
[279]
say rare diseases or personalized
[281]
therapies and
[282]
all these together comprises of the
[284]
social sustainability bucket
[287]
yeah this is this is really interesting
[289]
because you know if you really look at
[291]
some of these themes which you have been
[292]
investigating for a while i remember a
[295]
year or two ago we had published our
[296]
analysis around how can we improve
[298]
diversity in clinical trials that's an
[300]
idea where we've seen a lot of positive
[302]
movements say from the fda in the us now
[305]
uh i think it's really important given
[307]
the zeitgeist and the conversation we
[309]
are having on these topics uh so i'm
[311]
glad uh that you've done this and you've
[313]
done you and the team have done this
[315]
research and published this now uh and
[317]
i'm hoping for more such conversations
[319]
on the topic anik thanks for joining us
[321]
today
[322]
thank you for having me
