[0]
all right folks so i realized that i've
[1]
been talking a lot about the 1400
[4]
stimulus checks the timing of them kind
[6]
of focusing on that
[8]
last month i did talk a lot about the
[10]
updated child tax credit
[12]
uh that is now law along with the
[13]
stimulus checks but i haven't really
[14]
spent a whole lot of time talking about
[16]
the child tax credit
[17]
lately this month so in this video i
[18]
thought i would just give a recap of
[20]
this updated child tax credit for 2021
[22]
because i know that affects many of you
[23]
out there so first of all how did the
[25]
bill that joe biden signed into law
[27]
yesterday
[28]
the american rescue plan act of 2021
[30]
affect the child tax credit well
[32]
i'm going to talk about the monthly
[33]
payment option later in this video but
[35]
first let's talk about the numbers for
[36]
the credit as a whole
[37]
what you need to know is that this bill
[39]
increased the child tax credit for only
[41]
tax year 2021.
[43]
so for tax year 2020 it didn't make
[45]
changes to the child tax credit
[47]
okay and uh this bill did not
[50]
make changes the child tax credit for
[52]
2022 were going forward okay so for
[53]
taxer 2020
[55]
tax for 2022 unless congress you know
[57]
makes these changes for 2022 as well
[59]
it's the old rules
[60]
two thousand dollar child tax credit for
[62]
each qualifying child under the age of
[63]
17
[64]
with a maximum of fourteen hundred
[66]
dollars per child uh being allowed to be
[68]
refundable
[68]
okay but for tax year 2021 only the new
[72]
stimulus bill is saying instead of two
[73]
thousand dollars per child
[75]
we're increasing the child tax credit to
[77]
three thousand dollars per child for
[78]
children between the ages of six and 17.
[80]
so yes now 17 year olds are eligible
[83]
they were not
[84]
under the old rules and three thousand
[86]
six hundred dollars for children under
[87]
the age of six
[88]
and this updated child tax credit for
[90]
tax year 2021 is fully refundable
[92]
okay so let's say you have a kid that
[93]
turns four in 2021 a kid that turned six
[96]
in 2021
[97]
and a kid that turns 17 and 20 20 21
[100]
your 2021 child tax credit is 9 600
[102]
3 600 for the 4 year old and 3 000 each
[106]
uh for the other two kids okay now let's
[108]
say your federal tax liability is only
[110]
five thousand dollars
[111]
married couple making let's say seventy
[113]
thousand dollars a year w two jobs
[115]
you might only have a five thousand
[117]
dollar tax liability federal tax
[118]
liability
[119]
well the child tax credit would wipe out
[122]
your five thousand dollar federal tax
[123]
liability plus you get a refund check
[125]
for forty six hundred dollars in
[126]
addition uh you know to the refund on
[129]
whatever federal income tax withholdings
[131]
that were taken out during the year so
[132]
that's huge bigger child tax credit
[135]
and it's entirely refundable for 2021
[138]
that obviously helps lower income
[139]
families
[140]
uh that perhaps previously didn't get
[142]
the entire child tax credit
[144]
um because a portion of it was
[146]
non-refundable and they didn't have the
[147]
income tax liability
[149]
to absorb the full credit now let's talk
[151]
about income limitations here because
[152]
this is where things get a little more
[154]
complicated
[155]
and when we talk about these income
[156]
limitations it's helpful
[158]
to think about the 2021 child tax credit
[160]
as having two components okay
[162]
first is the old component the old two
[164]
thousand dollar portion let's call that
[165]
the base portion
[166]
the new component is the new 1 000 uh
[170]
dollar edition for children between the
[172]
ages of 6 and 17 and the new 1600
[174]
edition for children under the age of
[176]
six so for the old portion
[178]
the two thousand dollars the old income
[180]
limitations apply
[181]
those are two hundred thousand dollars
[183]
of adjusted gross income for singles
[184]
four hundred thousand dollars of
[186]
adjusted gross income for married filing
[187]
jointly taxpayers so
[189]
if your adjusted gross income is below
[191]
those amounts 200k
[192]
400k depending on your filing status
[194]
you're getting the full two thousand
[196]
dollar
[196]
base portion per child and i'm assuming
[198]
that the majority of my viewers have
[200]
incomes below those amounts
[201]
so i'm not going to dwell on that now
[204]
the income limitations for the new
[205]
portion
[206]
of the 2021 child tax credit that's the
[209]
1 000
[209]
edition for children between the ages of
[211]
6 and 17 and the 1600
[213]
edition for children under the age of
[215]
six the income limitations here are
[217]
similar to stimulus checks
[218]
okay at least the first two rounds the
[220]
third round is working a little
[222]
differently because it has a hard
[223]
ceiling right anyway
[225]
if you're single and your adjusted gross
[227]
income is seventy five thousand dollars
[228]
or below
[229]
or if you're head of household and your
[230]
adjusted gross income is one hundred and
[232]
twelve thousand
[233]
dollars five hundred and below or if
[235]
you're married filing jointly and your
[237]
adjusted gross income is one hundred and
[239]
thousand 000 or below you don't have to
[241]
worry
[242]
about phase-outs for any amount of the
[244]
child tax credit okay however if your
[246]
income is above those amounts for your
[247]
filing status
[248]
the amount of the expanded portion of
[250]
the child tax credit and again this is
[252]
just talking about the additional one
[253]
thousand dollars for children
[254]
between the ages of six and 17 and the
[256]
additional sixteen hundred dollars
[258]
for children under the age of six if
[260]
your income is
[261]
above those threshold amounts for your
[263]
filing status
[264]
your expanded portion of the child tax
[266]
credit decreases by five cents for every
[268]
dollar
[269]
your adjusted gross income exceeds those
[271]
amounts so for example let's say
[273]
uh you're married filing jointly and
[276]
your income for the year is one hundred
[278]
and sixty thousand dollars
[280]
and let's say you have a three-year-old
[281]
so you're getting the two thousand
[283]
dollar credit
[284]
right you're not phased out for that
[286]
because the phase-outs
[287]
for the two thousand dollar piece the
[289]
base piece begin at four hundred
[291]
thousand dollar agi
[292]
for married couples filing jointly but
[294]
for the 1600
[295]
portion for your three-year-old that's
[296]
the 2021 edition okay for children under
[299]
the age of six
[300]
that is reduced for you by five cents on
[302]
the dollar for each dollar your income
[303]
exceeds
[304]
the 150 000 threshold for your filing
[307]
status so
[308]
if your income is 160 000 your income
[310]
exceeds the 150 000
[312]
threshold by 10 000 so 0.05 times 10 000
[317]
is 500 so your 1600 edition
[321]
would be reduced by 500 okay so you
[324]
would only be eligible
[325]
for an eleven hundred dollar edition for
[327]
your three-year-old
[328]
okay so that number plus the old portion
[331]
of two thousand dollars is thirty one
[332]
hundred dollars
[334]
so your child tax credit for 2021
[337]
would be 3 100 now let's talk about the
[340]
monthly payments
[341]
so the monthly payment would be equal to
[344]
your maximum child tax credit for 2021
[346]
divided by 12
[347]
with you claiming any amounts you did
[349]
not receive as a monthly payment on your
[351]
2021 tax return
[352]
that you file in 2022. now the irs is
[355]
shooting to get these monthly payments
[356]
going beginning in july that's the word
[359]
on the street however the american
[360]
rescue plan gives them leeway to say hey
[364]
we can't do it that early or hey you
[366]
know monthly is going to be too
[366]
administratively burdensome
[368]
we're just going to do it quarterly so
[369]
we're going to see what happens there
[371]
irs has been pretty mum on that for now
[373]
obviously this bill was just signed
[374]
yesterday
[375]
but of course i will keep my ears out
[377]
for these things but let's say the irs
[378]
starts with monthly payments in july
[380]
what would this look like so for the
[382]
example i gave previously
[383]
a married couple expecting a
[387]
3 100 child tax credit for 2021 they
[390]
would
[391]
3100 divided by 12 is about 258 dollars
[396]
so they would be looking at receiving
[397]
258 dollars a month
[399]
uh beginning in july right so 258 a
[401]
month for july
[402]
august september october november
[404]
december some of those monthly payments
[406]
is one thousand five hundred and forty
[408]
eight dollars
[409]
so 1548 monthly payments throughout
[411]
those months and then they would claim
[412]
the difference
[413]
between thirty one hundred dollars right
[415]
their total credit
[417]
and the amount they receive as monthly
[418]
payments as a tax credit under 2021 tax
[421]
return right
[422]
so uh 1 548 a monthly payments
[426]
right and then plus a 1 52
[430]
credit claim on the tax return gives
[431]
them their total credit of 3100
[433]
so that's how that would work you will
[435]
be able to opt out of the monthly
[437]
payments and just claim the whole thing
[438]
on your tax return
[439]
if you want to all right folks that's
[441]
what i have on that today
[443]
obviously with the monthly payment piece
[444]
you really just have to wait for
[445]
guidance from the irs on that
[446]
but thank you so much for watching i
[448]
will see in the next video and make sure
[450]
to check out the other two
[451]
tax videos on the next screen
