[Music]
[22]
welcome back to the crochet crowd as
[23]
well as yarnspirations.com i'm your host
[25]
mikey today we're going to work on the
[27]
woven plaid blanket this is a really
[29]
simple idea and we're going to be making
[31]
some mesh work and then we're going to
[33]
be using some yarn strands in order to
[34]
weed through to create a plaid looking
[37]
project it's actually really quite neat
[39]
in order to do
[40]
today's yarn is asking for caring united
[42]
but if you cannot find this in a store
[44]
near you or you cannot order it online
[46]
you can also substitute with burnout
[48]
super value a yarn in order to make this
[50]
work just realize that the caring united
[51]
yarn balls are not as big as the bernat
[54]
super value so you will not need as many
[56]
balls and i will provide that
[57]
information on my website if you'd like
[60]
to see what the conversion is in order
[61]
for making this in super value instead
[64]
so let me tell you a little bit more
[65]
about this patterning and how it's going
[67]
to work for today
[70]
so today's patterning is all about
[72]
making the mesh and the mesh is actually
[74]
what is holding all of the yarn strands
[76]
that are coming down through and the
[78]
mesh is made up of double crochets slash
[80]
chain one and the double crochets are
[82]
just sitting on top of each other to
[84]
create a mesh like a window um
[86]
like a window screen really in order to
[89]
keep it all in balance so because
[91]
they're all stacked up on top of each
[92]
other all of the gapping spaces will
[94]
align with each other to make the
[96]
spacing uh perfect and make sure that
[99]
you can have this woven effect as it's
[101]
going all the way through but let me
[102]
tell you a little bit more about this in
[104]
order to follow these instead of
[106]
instructions really quite easily
[108]
so in the patterning we have to do the
[110]
amount of rows in order to keep the the
[112]
effect looking plaid so what i've done
[114]
here is on the instructions it asks us
[116]
to do
[118]
some repeat patterning okay so we're
[120]
going to start off with and i'm going to
[122]
provide this information on my website
[124]
if you wish to crochet crowd.com and
[127]
essentially the patterning is a
[128]
repeating of rows number three all the
[130]
way to 14 and we have to repeat that
[132]
eight times so what i decided to do for
[134]
myself is that i created this chart so
[137]
whenever i get something done i can just
[139]
check mark check mark check mark all the
[141]
way down for the repeat number one
[143]
repeat number two so the first time we
[145]
have to run through all this on its own
[147]
and then we have to repeat eight times
[148]
and i have boxes here in order to check
[151]
it so you can see here's what the color
[152]
orientation is so it starts off with
[155]
cherry cherry dark green cherry cherry
[157]
white white fresh green green
[159]
white fresh green fresh green cherry
[161]
cherry so when we go to end on 14 we're
[164]
going to come right back to number three
[166]
again and start once again do you notice
[168]
how we started off with cherry up here
[170]
and because we started off with cherry
[172]
when we get to the final one of the p8
[174]
we're going to finish off with cherry on
[176]
the other side so you end up with a
[177]
really nice looking and balanced afghan
[181]
when you see it all done like so okay so
[184]
let's begin to do some of the mesh work
[186]
and i'll show you how to do the strands
[188]
coming through and create these fringing
[190]
because the fringing is done at the same
[191]
time of the strands as well
[195]
so while we're on the patterning all
[197]
these strands that are coming through
[198]
there's actually an order on how they're
[200]
coming through so if you look at the
[201]
weaving diagram just like this so in the
[203]
first space you'll start off with these
[205]
colors just like you see it within the
[207]
diagram okay so these are all the
[209]
strands that are coming through and you
[210]
just have to follow and just check them
[211]
off as you do it once you start seeing
[213]
the repeat patterning that you can see
[215]
here
[216]
it becomes really quite easy in order to
[218]
do you may spend a bit of time doing all
[220]
the strands through but this is a plaid
[222]
look and this is what it takes in order
[224]
to get the look as well
[227]
so let's start this patterning and i'm
[228]
going to use bernat super value size h 5
[231]
millimeter crochet hook today and let's
[232]
put this on the hook so if the
[234]
patterning calls for 165 chains but if
[237]
you'd like to change the size of this
[239]
it's very easy to do just know if you
[241]
change the width you're going to change
[243]
the patterning of the striping so just
[245]
be very conscientious of that so if you
[247]
would like to change the size and come
[248]
up with your own concepts for the the
[250]
plaiting look i just re keeping it on an
[252]
odd size so for example it's 165 for
[255]
your chain so you can do like 157
[258]
you can do 145
[262]
as long as it's an odd number so i'm
[264]
going to do 17 today so one two 3
[268]
4
[269]
5
[271]
6 7
[272]
8 9
[274]
10 11
[276]
12 13 14 15 and 16 and 17. so there we
[281]
go so there is my odd number chain you
[283]
will have 165 if you are following the
[285]
patterning just like um it suggests
[290]
to start the first row we're going to go
[291]
fifth chain from the hook so we have
[293]
that chain so we got one
[295]
two three four and five turn that chain
[298]
over and get the back hump only and i
[300]
want you to double crochet into that
[301]
fifth chain
[303]
so in the rules of crochet what's going
[305]
to happen is that chaining of three
[308]
counted as a as a half double sorry as a
[311]
double crochet and then we have a chain
[313]
one so that's where all of this is
[314]
coming into effect so we're creating the
[316]
mesh on the outside
[318]
so to go to the next one we chain one
[320]
skip the next chain and go to the second
[322]
one over for another double crochet and
[324]
we're gonna do the entire
[326]
chain like that so chain one skip the
[329]
next chain and then double crochet into
[330]
the next one
[332]
so i want you to do that all the way
[334]
across and i'll show you how to turn
[336]
around and do the
[338]
the next row and all of these rows are
[340]
identical to each other it's just a
[341]
matter of changing the color
[342]
strategically as it suggests in the
[345]
pattern
[346]
and
[346]
it's really quite an easy pattern to
[348]
work on and it will go fast because
[350]
you're just putting all these mesh kind
[352]
of stitches in so you'll come up to the
[355]
very last one
[358]
here and double crochet so let me show
[360]
you how to turn around and make sure
[362]
that the mesh stays on top of each other
[365]
so in row number two we want to come
[367]
around
[368]
and we want to just turn our work and
[371]
we're going to chain up again so we're
[373]
going to this time chain up four so this
[375]
counts as a double crochet and a chain
[377]
one so one
[379]
two three
[380]
and four
[382]
and we're going to half double crochet
[383]
right or sorry we're going to double
[385]
crochet right in the top of the other
[386]
double crochet
[389]
followed by a chain one
[392]
and then we double crochet right into
[394]
the next double crochet
[396]
followed by a chain one
[398]
okay double crochet in the next one
[403]
followed by a chain one double crochet
[405]
in the next one
[408]
chain one
[411]
double crochet in the next one
[413]
and you're going to do that all the way
[414]
across that's how easy this patterning
[416]
is
[417]
when you come up to the edge remember
[419]
that you do have four chains here so
[420]
you're going to chain one you want to
[422]
come up to the third one so one two
[424]
three you got to make sure you have this
[425]
extra one left over because that is
[427]
considered your chain one
[431]
okay so when you turn your work it's
[432]
just like what you did and all of these
[435]
double crochets should sit on top of
[436]
each other when i come back i'm going to
[438]
show you how to change colors and i'll
[440]
show you how to do that next
[442]
so whenever you have to change a color
[444]
what i would recommend is cut your yarn
[446]
just like so and just yarn over and pull
[448]
through and i like to fasten off
[450]
completely when i'm doing projects like
[451]
this and i want to use this yarn and i'm
[454]
just going to weave it through some of
[455]
the stitch work that is existing already
[458]
because it is green and this color and
[460]
the straggler is green if you weave it
[462]
in the green it's going to be very hard
[463]
to tell to see where it is the next time
[465]
you're going over so i want you to turn
[467]
your work
[468]
and let's get your next color i'm going
[470]
to switch to blue and i'm going to start
[472]
off with the slip knot it's just my
[473]
personal preference
[475]
and i want to come into the top of the
[477]
first double crochet and i want to just
[479]
join it so i'm just going to join it
[481]
just with the one strand only
[484]
so i just pull through
[485]
and then i'm going to use both strands
[487]
and i'm going to chain two so one
[490]
and two with both strands
[492]
and then the next two i want to keep
[494]
just the one strand one and two you see
[496]
i've i've been crocheting so long that
[498]
i've almost got that down to a science
[500]
so then i'm just going to do exactly
[502]
what i've already done before i'm going
[503]
to double crochet in the next double
[505]
crochet
[508]
and because you weaved in your other
[509]
color in there it's going to get stuck
[511]
underneath so it's great so chain one
[513]
and double crochet into the next
[515]
double crochet
[517]
chain one
[521]
okay and that's all you have to do for
[523]
these the mesh to create it
[525]
so i've now just i've gotten back to
[527]
where the stragglers that i will
[529]
weaved in i can throw it in behind i can
[531]
safely cut that afterwards and i'm not
[533]
going to be worried about that falling
[534]
out on me
[541]
so i just keep on going to the end
[543]
remember it's how you finish the end
[545]
which makes the world a difference so
[546]
chain one there's four chains here make
[548]
sure you come to the third one there
[550]
should be a chain one that you don't
[551]
touch
[553]
and i'm going to turn my work and have
[555]
to show you one more time so turn your
[556]
work chain four one two three four
[560]
come into the first double crochet
[566]
chain one
[568]
next one
[569]
so i'm going to then show you how to do
[574]
the strands next
[576]
so you're going to do the whole project
[578]
just follow the color schemes
[580]
that it's asking you to do
[583]
for going in the horizontal direction
[585]
that you're doing right now and then i'm
[586]
going to show you how to do the strand
[588]
work right after this so just when you
[590]
get to the end make sure you skip over
[592]
go to the third one only and i'm going
[595]
to fasten off so once you're done
[596]
completely
[599]
just going to trim my yarn
[602]
and i'm just going to weave in the ends
[604]
so we did a plateau chad
[606]
bernat blanket where there is no fringe
[608]
but this one does have fringe and
[610]
because of that it has a little bit of a
[611]
different look and
[613]
i think it's kind of nicer in my opinion
[615]
but
[616]
it's up to you you are the creator you
[618]
can do what you like for yourself
[622]
so i've just
[624]
weaved that in see this was already
[625]
weaved in from my last one
[628]
so you can trim that and then of course
[631]
you can trim that one that you just
[632]
finished off as well and let's begin to
[634]
do the strand work next
[638]
so we're now ready to apply the strand
[640]
so you're going to have the whole thing
[641]
all crocheted up and now it's time to
[643]
put the strands through so going on page
[645]
number two of the instructions you'll
[646]
see here is the instructions as the
[648]
strands coming down is if you were to do
[651]
it okay so what i'm going to show you
[653]
next is how to make these strands this
[655]
will be a little bit labor intensive i'm
[656]
not going to lie to you
[658]
just to getting prepped and it's up to
[660]
you in order to make this really work
[662]
but it's really not hard it's just a
[663]
matter of just just a little bit of time
[665]
so we're going to be cutting lengths of
[667]
96 inches okay and it says take three
[670]
strands together
[671]
and then thread them onto darning needle
[673]
to begin the lower edge
[675]
if you don't have a darning needle it's
[677]
not a big deal in this particular case
[679]
so what you're going to do and what i
[680]
would do
[681]
is that you're going to take three
[683]
strands at one time so if you have extra
[684]
balls of the same color you can just
[686]
grab all three and just measure 96
[689]
inches and then just cut it so then you
[691]
have three done at the same time so i
[693]
would do something like that okay so
[696]
in this case because it is a tutorial
[698]
i'm going to just
[700]
just kind of wing it so once i get one
[702]
done what i technically do is that i
[705]
would just grab the one that's already
[706]
cut and i will feed it from the yarn
[708]
ball and i will keep pulling
[710]
until
[711]
both strands are the same
[717]
so the more
[718]
yarn balls you have for this the more
[720]
strands you can pull through just like
[722]
this and you want a total of three
[723]
strands each
[726]
in order to go down some people like to
[728]
chain instead of just using strands
[730]
that's up to you so let's begin the next
[733]
part of the tutorial
[736]
so you'll want to go uh basically from
[738]
one side to another just make sure you
[740]
have the right amount of chain spaces if
[741]
you're following the diagram as as what
[743]
it says
[744]
and you're just going to start up and
[745]
you're just going to come through
[747]
and
[748]
just taking all three strands you don't
[750]
need a darning needle with this you can
[752]
use it if you wish but you can use your
[754]
fingers and just go in and out of the of
[756]
the gapping spaces
[761]
okay and just keep on going
[765]
sometimes i use a big
[766]
tunisian
[768]
needle as well and i keep going and you
[770]
go all the way down through
[773]
and what you want to do is that when you
[775]
go to do this you don't want to do it so
[776]
that the afghan is starting to bunch
[778]
like this you want to keep it nice and
[779]
consistent you see it's just kind of
[781]
floating in there
[783]
and then basically the next one what
[784]
we're going to do is that when we do the
[786]
next one we want to maintain and come up
[788]
from the other side so let's just say
[790]
for example you're doing the next one
[792]
you want to make sure that it's opposite
[794]
to each
[798]
other okay so the next one it'll be
[802]
like so
[810]
okay and this will get gives you the
[812]
plaid look if you go opposite
[816]
okay you're going to use a different
[817]
string i'm just showing you this way
[819]
just to prove it
[821]
to you at this point
[823]
okay
[824]
so you can see that the strands look
[826]
like they're being woven in just like
[828]
that so you just got to be conscientious
[830]
on where you're starting so you want to
[831]
leave about a nine inch
[833]
space
[834]
on one side of your afghan and to the
[836]
other and so you're going to work all
[838]
the way down you're going to get them
[840]
all into position you'll have your ups
[842]
and downs in order to
[844]
have the woven effect
[846]
so now it's time to secure these in
[848]
permanently into position so what you're
[850]
going to need is the same color strands
[851]
that these are so if you have a
[853]
different color in the next one you'll
[854]
need a different color strand so we're
[856]
going to be using white
[857]
so you have to use three strands of 18
[860]
inch lengths
[862]
okay and you want to fold that in half
[865]
just like that so you're going to come
[867]
in to the very end like so and you're
[870]
going to fasten it around so go right
[872]
into the corner or go right into the
[874]
space and pull through
[877]
but stop what i want you to do is with
[879]
this new loop like so i want you to not
[882]
only grab the yarn that is part of that
[884]
strand but i want you to grab the three
[886]
that are part of the woven effect and i
[888]
want you to put it right through this
[889]
loop
[893]
like so
[895]
be gentle about it
[897]
and this is going to lock that strand
[900]
going across and the fringe together as
[903]
as if it's one so it looks like that the
[905]
fringe is actually part of it which it
[907]
is in some way so let me review again so
[909]
here's the other side so i want to grab
[911]
another
[912]
group of 18 or sorry 18 inches so
[915]
there's three strands
[917]
there
[918]
and i want to use my darning needle or
[920]
sorry my crochet hook and pull through
[927]
okay
[929]
just pull the loop
[930]
and i want you to put that strand
[932]
through
[933]
that
[934]
and i want you to grab the three that
[935]
are part of the woven
[937]
side and i want you to pull it all
[939]
through that new loop
[943]
oh i've got to make sure i stay to the
[944]
outside on the on this
[947]
and so that will keep the strands
[950]
relatively snug with each other
[953]
as it's going all the way across plus
[955]
you'll have some really awesome effects
[957]
when it comes to doing all your your
[959]
fringe work just like so so that would
[960]
be how you do it so until next time i'm
[962]
mikey on behalf of the crochet crowd.com
[964]
as well as your inspirations this is how
[966]
you would do it all the way across just
[968]
use the same techniques and you can have
[970]
this afghan if you wish until next time
[973]
it's mikey on behalf of your
[974]
inspirations
