Alternative Intersections: Displaced Left Turns - YouTube

[0]
today our communities face a growing
[3]
number of transportation challenges as
[6]
traffic volumes grow and congestion
[9]
worsens motorists pedestrians and
[11]
cyclists confront greater risks at
[14]
intersections we need balanced solutions
[18]
that improve safety and keep people
[20]
moving at the federal highway
[23]
administration our first priority is
[25]
safety and our mission is to improve
[28]
mobility for all users of our nation's
[31]
highways in support of these goals we've
[34]
been evaluating innovative intersection
[36]
designs for many years alternative
[39]
intersections are are worth considering
[41]
because they deliver more for less they
[45]
get more cars through the same spaces
[47]
than a conventional intersection and
[50]
they deliver better safety than a
[52]
conventional intersection where they
[53]
have been built travelers save time
[56]
agencies save money and communities
[59]
benefit from safer facilities one
[62]
innovative intersection design the
[64]
displaced left turn intersection
[66]
implements unopposed left turns at
[69]
intersections by crossing traffic over
[72]
to the other side of the road in advance
[75]
at many intersections the critical
[78]
question is how to address left turns
[80]
how they are treated has an impact on
[83]
the efficiency of the intersection and
[85]
can reduce a crash type that tends to be
[87]
quite severe the displaced left turn
[91]
design also known as the continuous flow
[94]
intersection or CFI moves the left turn
[97]
crossover upstream drivers cross over to
[101]
the left side of the road into an
[103]
exclusive left turn lane
[105]
as they enter the primary intersection
[108]
the left turns proceed unopposed
[111]
compared to a conventional intersection
[114]
conflicts are fewer at a DLT an
[117]
important step to improving intersection
[119]
safety conflict points are reduced from
[123]
32 for a conventional intersection to 28
[126]
for a full DLT additionally the DLT
[133]
design allows left turning traffic to
[135]
move simultaneously with through traffic
[138]
resulting in significant operational
[141]
benefits studies show this increases
[143]
capacity as much as 70 percent the big
[147]
outstanding benefit is capacity signs
[151]
and pavement markings inform and guide
[153]
drivers as they approach a displaced
[156]
left turn intersection traffic signals
[159]
are easily synchronized resulting in
[162]
improved efficiency a DL T is terrific
[164]
for signal timing it allows us to reduce
[167]
the cycle length so reduces the read
[170]
time for everybody so we're able to
[172]
reduce cycles establish good progression
[175]
individual signals within the DLT are
[178]
easy to coordinate with each other so
[180]
from a driver point of view most all
[182]
drivers would only have to stop once if
[184]
at all pedestrian crossings that a
[187]
displaced left turn intersection are
[189]
similar to a conventional intersection
[192]
pedestrian signals are provided ensuring
[195]
adequate crossing opportunity and time
[197]
an added benefit is the raised
[200]
channelization needed to separate
[203]
traffic these islands can also serve as
[206]
a refuge for pedestrians resulting in
[209]
shorter simpler crossing stages the
[212]
displaced left turn is also very
[215]
adaptable a full D LT may be appropriate
[218]
for an intersection of two high-volume
[221]
arterial roads each with high volume
[224]
left turns
[225]
a DLT can also be partial limited only
[229]
to the approaches where needed this
[231]
makes it well suited for busy
[233]
t-intersections finally because the
[239]
capacity of the DLT is much higher than
[241]
a conventional intersection it can
[244]
postpone or eliminate the need for a
[246]
full interchange making it a
[248]
cost-effective option intersection is a
[252]
treatment that can be very effective
[255]
don't be afraid of diverting movements
[259]
slightly away from the intersection
[261]
because you can't just keep building
[264]
through lanes to save 10-15 seconds you
[267]
really want to synchronize the movements
[269]
the federal highway administration
[271]
encourages communities and agencies to
[273]
consider the displaced left turn to
[276]
improve the safety and efficiency of
[278]
existing intersections as well as an
[280]
option for new intersections for more
[283]

turn and other innovative intersection
