How to Open a Morgan Stanley Access Investing Account (for the AMEX Platinum) - YouTube

Channel: The Credit Frog | Credit Card Strategies

[0]
hey there sam from the craft frog in
[1]
today's video we're gonna open a morgan
[2]
stanley access investing account now the
[5]
reason why we're doing this is to be
[6]
eligible to apply for the american
[8]
express morgan stanley platinum card one
[11]
of the requirements to opening this card
[12]
is having an eligible brokerage account
[14]
with morgan stanley and the cheapest
[15]
available option to do so is with the
[17]
robo advisor platform access investing
[20]
as of the recording of this video this
[22]
card has a signup bonus of a hundred
[23]
thousand membership rewards points after
[25]
you spend six thousand dollars on
[27]
purchases in your first six months of
[29]
card membership
[30]
i recently opened a morgan stanley
[32]
access investing account myself and
[33]
realized along the way that this process
[35]
was not as straightforward as i expected
[37]
it to be so i'm going to walk you
[39]
through what i did and hopefully make
[40]
this experience much easier for you if
[42]
you're deciding on whether or not to
[44]
open this account as well but before we
[45]
get into this video if at any point you
[47]
find this content educational or helpful
[49]
please make sure to hit that like button
[50]
so i know you like this kind of content
[52]
consider hitting that subscribe button
[53]
down below as well as notification bell
[55]
so you don't miss any of our weekly
[56]
content now with that out of the way
[58]
let's jump right in so the first thing
[60]
we're going to do is navigate to
[62]
morganstanley.com
[64]
once we get there what i found to be the
[66]
first issue on the website is that it's
[67]
kind of difficult to figure out how to
[69]
open an account i mean if you look at
[72]
other websites that offer brokerage
[73]
accounts it's typically pretty easy to
[75]
figure out how to open an account on
[77]
their home page for example on
[80]
fidelity's website there's a button on
[82]
the top left to open an account
[84]
on charles schwab's website there's a
[86]
button on the top right to open an
[87]
account and on vanguard's website
[89]
there's a button on the top right as
[91]
well to open an account this is not the
[93]
case with morgan stanley so i had to do
[95]
a little exploring the first thing i
[97]
tried to do was to sign up for morgan
[99]
stanley online i clicked on create a
[101]
username but unfortunately it looks like
[103]
you need to already have an account with
[105]
them to create a username online so that
[107]
didn't work going back to the home page
[109]
i figured out that i can get to the
[110]
right page by clicking on what we do and
[113]
then by clicking on wealth management
[116]
then i can scroll down the page where i
[117]
can see what my options are to open an
[119]
account you can see from the screen that
[121]
the only two options that you can do
[122]
online are to open a self-directed
[124]
e-trade account or an automated access
[126]
investing account unfortunately the
[128]
e-trade account does not qualify you to
[130]
open an american express morgan stanley
[132]
platinum so we're going to go ahead and
[134]
open the access investing account once
[137]
you click on open an account you're
[138]
directed to the login screen where now
[140]
you can see the section here that says
[141]
to continue as a guest if you're new to
[144]
morgan stanley online so i went ahead
[145]
and clicked that button the access
[147]
investing platform will guide you
[149]
through several steps to create your
[150]
account starting with why you want to
[152]
invest we don't really have a goal here
[154]
other than to open an american express
[156]
platinum card so we're going to select
[158]
simply to build wealth
[160]
they'll ask you to name your plan and
[162]
you can name it whatever you'd like but
[163]
for this example we'll just keep the
[165]
default name build wealth the next
[167]
screen will ask to collect some
[168]
information to help build your plan so
[170]
let's click continue
[172]
and here they ask how much do you plan
[173]
on contributing now for the access
[175]
investing account there's a 5 000
[178]
minimum investment but as we have all
[179]
seen over this past year so far in 2022
[182]
the market has been very volatile and so
[184]
you should definitely think of investing
[186]
a little bit more than five thousand
[187]
dollars to have a buffer for any market
[190]
fluctuations or downturns so for this
[192]
example i'm going to put in 7 500
[194]
i'm going to leave monthly contributions
[196]
at zero dollars because i don't plan on
[198]
putting any more money into this account
[200]
and then let's click continue the next
[202]
two screens will determine the
[203]
investments in your portfolio based on
[205]
your level of risk and your portfolio
[207]
objective now for those of us who are
[209]
opening this account mainly to get
[210]
access to the american express morgan
[212]
sally platinum we're focused on trying
[214]
to have a portfolio with the lowest cost
[216]
which would be the portfolio that has
[218]
low cost index funds that is appropriate
[221]
for our risk tolerance which is going to
[223]
vary based on our age and when we plan
[226]
on retiring just to make it more clear
[229]
for those of you that are interested the
[230]
conservative profile will divide your
[232]
contribution into a 31 69 split between
[235]
equities and fixed income the moderate
[237]
portfolio divides your contribution into
[239]
a 66 34 split and the aggressive
[242]
portfolio divides your investments into
[244]
a 77 23
[245]
split we'll go into more details later
[248]
in this video as we continue to move
[249]
forward with opening this account now
[252]
i'm not going to focus too much on the
[253]
investment portion of this as this is
[255]
not a financial advice and i'm not a
[256]
financial professional but for me i
[258]
don't plan on retiring anytime soon so i
[260]
have a pretty high risk tolerance and i
[262]
also want to minimize the amount of
[264]
fixed income assets since this is a
[266]
taxable brokerage so for me i'm going to
[268]
select the aggressive option this next
[271]
screen asks you what your objective is
[272]
for your portfolio again we want to have
[274]
the lowest cost investments which would
[276]
be index funds so we're going to select
[278]
the option on the far right labeled
[280]
lower cost investing just for fun though
[283]
i want to show you the other two options
[284]
that feature something called thematic
[286]
investing that morgan stanley offers as
[289]
additional investment choices if we
[291]
choose outperform the market you can see
[293]
that there are six theme options and
[295]
they consist of global frontier defense
[298]
and cyber security genomics and
[300]
biomedicine emerging consumer robotics
[303]
data and ai and inflation conscious if
[306]
we choose socially responsible investing
[308]
you can see that there are two theme
[309]
options and they are
[311]
gender diversity and climate action
[313]
although these options look interesting
[315]
and fun to select these funds consist of
[317]
actively managed mutual funds with very
[319]
high expense ratios so again because
[321]
we're focused on keeping our expenses
[323]
and fees as low as possible this is
[325]
something we want to avoid so back to
[328]
the main screen here we'll select the
[329]
lower cost investing option which
[331]
invests in an all etf market trunk
[333]
portfolio that tracks a blended market
[336]
index
[344]
so as you can see the aggressive
[346]
portfolio has a 77 split to equities and
[348]
a 23 split to fixed income what you can
[352]
also do is click on the button that says
[354]
full model details and see which exact
[356]
etfs you'll be investing in i've
[358]
compiled the three risk profiles
[359]
associated with the lower cost investing
[361]
portfolio option so you can see the etf
[363]
breakdown of each one of these profiles
[365]
easily i'll display them one at a time
[367]
on the screen going from the
[368]
conservative risk profile to moderate to
[371]
the aggressive risk profile and it will
[373]
come back and finish opening the account
[374]
okay here we go
[381]
so
[411]
once you click continue the access
[413]
investing platform will run projections
[415]
based on your choices and then ask you
[417]
to create an online profile username and
[419]
password once you register your account
[421]
you'll have to upload identification
[423]
documents to complete the account
[425]
opening process
[426]
after that the next step was to wait for
[428]
morgan stanley to check your documents
[429]
and officially open the account and this
[431]
is what that screen will look like now
[433]
keep in mind at this point they haven't
[434]
required any deposit from you yet even
[437]
though you indicated that earlier what
[439]
the initial posit was going to be
[441]
i waited several days for my documents
[443]
to be reviewed but i was impatient since
[444]
i had no idea how long they would take
[446]
so i called customer service a few days
[448]
after i opened the account to see if
[449]
they could speed up the process review
[451]
my documents and ultimately open the
[453]
account once i did that the account was
[455]
open about an hour later and i was able
[457]
to access the online interface
[459]
at this point the final step is to fund
[462]
the account which took another couple
[464]
days for the transfer to go through from
[466]
my bank okay so here's what the home
[467]
screen looks like i've already done this
[469]
so you can see that my initial
[470]
investment has already been invested and
[472]
since there's been some swings in the
[473]
market as you mentioned earlier i'm down
[475]
about a hundred dollars right now but if
[477]
you just open this account and you want
[479]
to transfer money in you would go up to
[481]
pay transfer and budget and click
[484]
transfers then navigate over here to
[486]
where it says manage external accounts
[488]
and from here the website will walk you
[490]
through how to link your existing bank
[493]
once the access investing account is
[494]
funded with at least five thousand
[495]
dollars congratulations you can now open
[498]
up the american express morgan stanley
[500]
platinum card the benefits of this card
[502]
as compared to the classic american
[503]
express platinum card would be the new
[506]
signup bonus if you haven't had this
[508]
card already as well as getting a free
[511]
authorized user which would normally
[513]
cost 175 dollars per year
[516]
also you have the opportunity to qualify
[519]
for an engagement bonus of 695
[522]
per year if you also decide to open up a
[524]
platinum cash plus account with morgan
[527]
stanley there are more details and
[529]
requirements regarding this so i'll
[530]
definitely cover that in a more detailed
[532]
video in the future
[534]
all right so i hope that this was
[535]
helpful for you if you wanted to open up
[537]
a morgan stanley access investing
[539]
account this is not necessarily the best
[541]
account to open given how complicated it
[543]
is to set up as well as the point three
[544]
percent advisory fee for a robo-advisor
[547]
platform but if you want to get the
[548]
american express morgan stanley platinum
[550]
card this would be the easiest and most
[552]
cost effective way to get there so what
[555]
are your thoughts about this account do
[556]
you think it's worth opening this
[558]
account to get the morgan stanley
[559]
platinum card let me know in the
[561]
comments below and if you haven't
[562]
already make sure to check out our
[564]
previous video that i did that goes into
[566]
detail about whether or not the american
[568]
express morgan stanley platinum card is
[570]
right for you i'll leave a link to that
[571]
video as a card up in the top right as
[573]
well as on the end screen to help you
[575]
get there as always have a great one and
[578]
i'll see you in the next video
[595]
you
