Inside the All-New Lexus LC 500! - Motor Trend Presents - YouTube
Channel: MotorTrend Channel
[3]
- I love cars.
[4]
(dramatic music)
[10]
The communication between myself
[13]
and car is always very natural.
[17]
Be in a car gives me energy.
[22]
Good afternoon and thank
you for joining us.
[26]
The car I'm about to show you
[29]
is the result of the combined passion
[32]
of our engineers and designers.
[36]
Ladies and gentlemen,
[38]
introducing the all new Lexus LC 500.
[45]
(dramatic music)
[61]
(audience applauds)
[64]
Ladies and gentlemen,
[66]
this LC 500 is what the
more emotional Lexus
[71]
looks like to me.
[73]
They will arrive in showrooms next year.
[76]
Having driven this car many times
[79]
during prototype testing,
[82]
I can personally assure
you it is very sugoi.
[87]
Or as you say, here in
the States, awesome.
[93]
Once again, thank you for
your time and your input
[97]
and for helping us make the Lexus brand,
[101]
that I personally love so much.
[105]
- [Voiceover] At the 2011
Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance
[108]
Toyota president and CEO, Akio
Toyoda, noticed something.
[112]
Not a single Lexus among the array
[114]
of exotic European and American classics.
[117]
For his premium brand to
become an elite luxury marquee,
[120]
to someday have cars gracing
the greens at Pebble,
[123]
Toyoda-san knew Lexus needed a revolution.
[126]
The man to lead that revolution?
[128]
Koji Sato, chief engineer of the Lexus GS.
[132]
- Toyoda-san thinks that
we need some project
[136]
to make it a reality for the Lexus,
[138]
really need a revolution.
[140]
Then he meet the LF-LC
concept model at Detroit.
[145]
Then he decided we should make it real.
[151]
- [Voiceover] The revolution began
[152]
at the 2012 Detroit auto show
[154]
when Lexus debuted the LF-LC concept car.
[157]
A low slung GT that had
the style and emotion
[160]
Toyoda-san could one day
envision at Pebble Beach.
[163]
The decision was made to build it.
[165]
But the production car
would need the substance
[167]
to match the style.
[170]
On August 29, 2015, Lexus
invited Motor Trend's
[174]
Randy Pobst to the famous
Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca
[178]
to test a stage three LC prototype.
[180]
No longer hiding under chopped LS bodywork
[183]
the proto wore
near-production sheet metal,
[185]
though the black and white camouflage wrap
[187]
made it hard to see the curvaceous body.
[189]
But Pobst got a good sense
for the LC's dynamic chassis.
[192]
Five liter V8 and all-new
10-speed automatic.
[196]
- The engine's the RC F V8.
[198]
We know with all high
revving, smooth, powerful V8.
[202]
Great edge and shift into 6800 RPM.
[206]
Close-ratio gears.
[208]
Transmission's much
better at full throttle
[210]
than it is at parked throttle.
[212]
Smooth quick shifts,
[214]
close ratios,
[215]
well matched to the
engine's power current.
[218]
In the middle of the corner
[219]
it's got a good balance,
[220]
very stable, just a wee bit of understeer,
[223]
which is just the way I like it.
[225]
I like the braking feel a lot.
[227]
It's a good front pedal, lots of bite.
[229]
As you might expect from a Lexus
[231]
it does soak up the curves quite nicely.
[234]
Boy, there's a great experience.
[237]
Driving a prototype years before
it's coming on the market.
[241]
Sato-san, thank you very
much for the opportunity
[245]
to drive your prototype.
[247]
It was clear that handling
is pretty well sorted.
[250]
Transmission, I can tell,
[251]
still needs a lot of development.
[253]
The engine is super.
[254]
That's a success.
[256]
- Yeah, thank you.
[257]
- Thank you.
[258]
- [Voiceover] Before the
LC 500's reveal at Detroit
[261]
Pobst got one final go.
[263]
This time with a stage four prototype
[264]
at the Streets of Willow Springs Raceway.
[267]
With another level of suspension tuning
[268]
and transmission calibration,
[270]
the LC impressed with
its balance and grip.
[273]
What Pobst recommended to Sato-san,
[275]
that they further develop the damping.
[277]
- My biggest challenge is to get the Lexus
[280]
on test driving field.
[282]
We want to create our own position.
[285]
We are not following any other models.
[289]
If you think about a market,
[291]
the BMW 6 Series is dominant.
[294]
We are benchmarking the
BMW 6 Series, of course.
[297]
Also, we are benchmarking the Maserati GT.
[300]
That engine sound is incredible good.
[304]
The Supra gives me a very natural feel.
[307]
When you turn the steering
the vehicle movement
[310]
is very linear.
[313]
The response, very precise and stable.
[316]
That kind of taste is
fundamental the property
[321]
of the corporate Toyota.
[324]
It's really exciting.
[326]
- [Voiceover] While the LF-LC concept
[327]
was penned at Toyota's Calty design center
[330]
in Newport Beach, California,
[331]
The LC production car was assigned
[333]
to Japan-based chief designer Tadao Mori
[336]
who had worked previously on
Avalon, Camry, and Tundra.
[339]
Unlike Lexus projects of the past,
[341]
in which design and engineering
worked mostly independently,
[344]
for the LC, Mori-san and
Sato-san collaborated closely
[348]
from the start.
[349]
- Firstly, we set up the key
word, seduction and technology.
[354]
Those two key words are
totally opposite words.
[358]
Seduction's nice and elegant looking.
[361]
Technology's, kind of, cold.
[363]
So those different two key words
[366]
we kind of put together
to make new one thing.
[369]
We have adapt those
organic style into the car.
[374]
For example, the interior.
[375]
Even using multi materials,
[378]
which is cotton fibers and steels.
[382]
You can see all the cars
wrapped by materials, leathers.
[386]
You didn't find any plastics.
[389]
Also exterior, even the grills, headlamps.
[392]
We get very nice precise details.
[396]
Also, headlights, we
have brand new technology
[399]
which is a three LED, super small, units.
[405]
That is also not a challenge.
[408]
- [Voiceover] The LC 500 represents
[409]
a new era for Lexus.
[411]
One that combines high style
[413]
and high performance,
[414]
power and precision,
[416]
speed and seduction.
[418]
Near the end of 2016, we'll
get to drive the real deal.
[421]
And in 2017, we'll compare it against
[424]
the world's best performance machines
[426]
at our annual Best
Driver's Car competition.
[428]
We can't wait.
[430]
(easygoing music)
