Unemployment claims skyrocket amid coronavirus | Deadline | MSNBC - YouTube

[0]
all of the presidents really vacillating
[3]
and erratic public pronouncements and
[5]
utterances make a lot more sense in
[7]
light of the 3.3 million jobless claims
[11]
that we saw this morning yeah look he is
[15]
looking at an economic collapse and it's
[17]
not only is it politically difficult for
[19]
him this is the one strong card he was
[21]
bringing in his re-election campaign
[23]
it's also you know something that has
[25]
affected many people in a way that even
[27]
coronavirus hasn't right
[29]
coronavirus is affected now tens and
[32]
tens of thousands of Americans but the
[34]
shutdown so far is affected millions and
[36]
so of course that tug and tug would
[41]
affect any president trying to find the
[42]
right balance between all different
[44]
lives that are being thrown into turmoil
[47]
as a result here now all the public
[48]
health experts say this is a short-term
[50]
pain economically as bad as it might be
[52]
you need to go through this in order to
[54]
make sure you actually you know get to
[57]
the other side on the healthcare crisis
[59]
otherwise you're going to be doing it
[60]
all over again but you can certainly see
[62]
the president looking at those numbers a
[63]
day and feeling like this is
[65]
unsustainable from this point of view
[69]
David you make a point that seems to
[72]
elude the president sometimes that Peter
[73]
Baker also just made that the economic
[76]
recovery is tied to our recovery from
[78]
the pandemic you write today whatever
[80]
happens over the next week or two the
[82]
country still has no viable way to start
[84]
functioning normally again without a
[86]
huge increase in testing even if new
[89]
cases slow the return of typical
[91]
activity will cause new outbreaks this
[93]
is where I don't understand the
[95]
pigheadedness on Trump's part if the
[97]
goal is to turn the switch back on in
[99]
the economy there are some models in
[101]
South Korea and China there was testing
[104]
every two hours so you could have a
[105]
clean universe of people to send back
[108]
into offices or workplaces those things
[111]
don't even seem to be on the table I
[113]
think that's exactly right Nicole and I
[115]
and I think it's there's a really good
[117]
chance that he's not operating in his
[118]
own best political interests even
[121]
setting apart what the interests of the
[122]
country are that he is the leader of and
[125]
so it really we could really see a
[127]
situation in which we come back too soon
[129]
or we have people circulating out in the
[131]
world sporadically like we seen our
[133]
much of the south which makes the
[135]
economic pain as well as the human toll
[138]
much much worse and I just don't see any
[141]
way that there is an easy solution to
[143]
this and the president seems to be
[145]
wanting an easy solution and thinking he
[147]
can will that into being but it's
[150]
extremely unlikely that he can you know
[155]
Peter Baker it's it's the right point
[157]
and it's the only logical conclusion
[159]
he's going to flip the switch on it
[162]
would appear based on just the public
[163]
pronouncements and the dynamics that we
[165]
can all see when we watch these
[167]
briefings before a point where the
[170]
isolation has done what it needs to do
[172]
which is to sort of put out wildfires
[174]
not that he's very good at that either
[175]
but what is sort of the thinking inside
[178]
the White House is it you know pandemic
[181]
be damned we've got to get people back
[182]
to work well look this is a president as
[185]
you know Nicole who thinks in very
[187]
short-term bursts right he lives for the
[189]
moment he's not a long-term thinker and
[191]
so he has been frustrating these last
[194]
few days looking at indicators like the
[196]
ones that came out today on the on the
[198]
jobless claims and he's frustrated and
[200]
wants to be able to move on the thing he
[202]
did by using Easter as his target the
[204]
other day was actually kind of extended
[206]
it's a little bit further remember
[208]
originally it was a 15-day period which
[210]
would expire I think at the end of this
[212]
weekend early next week in effect by
[214]
making Easter he kind of extended out
[215]
just a little bit further the question
[217]
would be in that period between now and
[219]
then are the numbers so dire as some of
[221]
the experts predict they will be are is
[223]
the situation these hospitals so
[225]
overwhelming then in fact it will be
[226]
very hard for him actually to do what he
[229]
says he wants to do will he be you know
[231]
convinced otherwise by the doctor
[233]
pouches of the world and we'll see but I
[236]
think that you know if we really are
[238]
peaking in mid-april it will make it
[241]
much harder we've already seen a number
[242]
of governors who are the ones who
[244]
actually execute these orders including
[246]
Republican governors like Larry Hogan of
[247]
Maryland say no we're moving our return
[251]
to normal data even further they're not
[253]
listening to the president's Easter
[254]
deadline at this point but you can see
[256]
why that would have impacted states that
[257]
haven't been as aggressive particularly
[259]
as David said in the South other places
[261]
where there's been you know a more
[263]
relaxed attitude toward
