texas will build a border
[3]
wall in our state to help secure our
[6]
border
[7]
homes are being invaded neighborhoods
[10]
are dangerous and
[12]
people are being threatened on a daily
[15]
basis
[15]
i told you that texas would step up and
[18]
respond
[20]
today we begin that response
[24]
the border crisis reaching a boiling
[26]
point as texas governor abbott
[28]
vows to protect his state and build a
[30]
wall
[31]
now other states are stepping up to help
[33]
by sending their own law enforcement
[35]
officers to
[35]
the border south to governor south
[37]
dakota governor christie gnome joins us
[39]
now to react good morning governor glad
[41]
to have you with us
[42]
good morning it's great to be with you
[44]
so we have seen
[45]
several states begin to answer the call
[47]
of governor greg abbott of texas asking
[49]
for help from other states to deal with
[51]
this what should be a federal issue
[53]
in lieu of federal help other states are
[55]
stepping out i believe we've seen
[56]
florida
[57]
has made a commitment to help out in
[59]
texas tell us what's happening in south
[61]
dakota will you guys be able to
[62]
also offer help uh with the border
[64]
crisis
[66]
well securing that border is a national
[68]
security issue and we in south dakota
[70]
are evaluating that
[72]
we'd love to help and we're working
[73]
through that process to see if that's
[75]
something that we could make possible
[78]
governor i want to move to another topic
[80]
that i think
[81]
is very personal to you a lot of
[82]
middle-income families right now are
[84]
unhappy with
[85]
the proposal that the biden
[86]
administration has for a death tax
[89]
saying that it would their kids
[90]
with bills and i know that's a story
[92]
that hits home
[93]
for you i'd like to see if you could
[95]
just talk to us a little bit about what
[96]
happened in your family and
[98]
and why that issue was so important and
[100]
actually was a little bit of the reason
[101]
why you want to get into politics
[104]
well people ask me that all the time
[105]
rachel why i got involved in government
[107]
and politics because
[109]
up until just about 10 12 years ago i
[111]
was a farmer and a rancher
[113]
but it was because of the experience
[115]
that i went through when i was in
[116]
college
[117]
it was back in 1994 my dad was killed in
[120]
an accident
[121]
on our farm in ranch he was only 49
[123]
years old at the time
[124]
and our family got hit hard by death
[127]
taxes it was devastating for us
[129]
i had lost my dad it was a time of
[132]
tragedy he was my best friend
[134]
and then suddenly we found out from the
[136]
irs that we owed
[137]
hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of
[139]
thousands of dollars that
[140]
we didn't have we had land machinery and
[142]
cattle
[143]
but we didn't have any money in the bank
[145]
and so it made me angry
[148]
i started showing up at meetings talking
[150]
about policy got passionate about tax
[152]
reform
[153]
it took us 10 years to pay off those
[154]
taxes and we had to figure out a way to
[157]
make more money off the assets that we
[159]
had but
[159]
it was hard and so i think that story's
[162]
powerful because the death tax
[164]
is the only place in our tax code where
[167]
we double tax someone
[168]
and people who are wealthy who have a
[170]
lot of money figure out ways to hire
[172]
enough attorneys to get around it most
[174]
of the time it's those who get surprised
[176]
by a tragedy
[177]
or don't have money to do the kind of
[180]
estate planning that wealthy people do
[182]
that end up getting hit the hardest so i
[184]
was thankful to be in congress when
[186]
president trump took on tax reform
[188]
we made it better i always had the bill
[190]
to completely repeal the tax because it
[192]
is so unfair
[193]
but what president biden has proposed
[196]
will be devastating
[197]
it'll be devastating to families and
[199]
small business owners especially those
[201]
that
[202]
that are trying to make ends meet today
[204]
if we had owned a gas station
[205]
we would have been forced to sell our
[207]
family business in order to pay those
[209]
taxes or if we had
[210]
you know a small restaurant or motel we
[213]
would have had to sell in order to pay
[215]
luckily we had land
[216]
we could take a mortgage out on and and
[219]
get debt on in order to go secure
[221]
financing and had some people help us go
[224]
out on a limb for a bunch of kids and a
[226]
mom who was devastated but if that
[227]
hadn't happened here in south dakota
[230]
we would have jeopardized our family
[231]
business too well this is something that
[233]
could be
[234]
increased death taxes is a possibility
[236]
under what joe biden wants to propose
[239]
what is the philosophy of the left that
[241]
believes that ultimately
[243]
we should be taxing the wealth that
[245]
parents accumulate because they want to
[246]
pass it to the next generation
[249]
well they're not telling the truth folks
[251]
work hard every single day and they pay
[253]
their taxes
[254]
these folks that have any kind of an
[255]
asset under their name
[257]
they may own something that they've
[259]
worked for their entire life
[260]
and that they want to give their kids a
[262]
start with but but you're taxing it
[264]
again
[265]
it's a double tax at the time of death
[268]
that really cripples their ability to
[270]
pass on and keep that business going
[272]
so this is what liberals want to do
[276]
is is take anything that they have and
[278]
pull it into the government
[280]
and use it and grow government take more
[282]
control over people's lives they're
[283]
using fear to do it
[285]
they're using manipulation to push that
[287]
agenda and it ends up in resulting in a
[290]
country that has socialist
[291]
policies and that is where this is going
[294]
and it starts with taxes it starts with
[296]
control
[297]
and the death tax and estate tax is
[299]
exactly a good example of how that
[300]
begins
[301]
well i know the answer to that pete the
[303]
answer to why or how the left
[304]
rationalizes the death tax is they think
[306]
they are simply taxing
[307]
the wealthy they are taxing unearned
[309]
income now governor noam you're pointing
[311]
out first of all the very particular
[312]
problem of your situation people that
[314]
are land rich and cash poor
[315]
and that hits very hard there's also the
[317]
philosophical issue which you're right
[319]
it's a double taxation
[320]
but how do you answer their argument to
[322]
pete's question they will say
[324]
it's simply taxing the wealthy
[326]
redistricting and and it's unearned
[328]
income anyway you didn't do anything to
[329]
earn that so how do you respond to
[331]
someone making that argument to you
[334]
i tell my story i tell the story of my
[336]
neighbors the families around me that
[338]
are
[338]
small business owners have a little
[340]
dress shop on main street have a little
[342]
bit of equity in it
[343]
have a building that they fought their
[345]
whole life to pay for
[347]
and want to hang on to and then they
[348]
have a death a tragedy
[350]
and they won't have the ability to keep
[352]
it because of the taxes they owe the
[353]
federal government
[354]
so we as republicans as conservatives
[356]
often use statistics and
[358]
data and policies but it's the stories
[361]
that are powerful and they're real and
[363]
they're everywhere across this country
[365]
of where an unfair burden from the
[367]
government came in
[368]
took away belongings that someone has
[371]
worked hard for and earned
[373]
and and took it from them at a very
[375]
difficult time
[376]
and used it to promote their agenda and
[378]
promote a bigger
[379]
government that has more control over
[382]
their lives
[383]
governor your story is so powerful if
[384]
people haven't heard it google it
[386]
read about it because it reads like a
[388]
hallmark movie what you did
[390]
to help your family the sacrifices you
[392]
made and had to make
[394]
in order to make you know keep the land
[396]
in your family's um
[397]
name and not give it over to the
[398]
government who did nothing um
[400]
uh to earn that money so it reads your
[403]
story it's fascinating thanks a lot for
[405]
joining us this morning i knew there was
[406]
no one better
[407]
to talk about the death tax than you
[408]
governor oh
[410]
well i tell you what it's something that
[412]
was very difficult for our entire family
[414]
we had an incredible state community
[416]
that helped us and we wouldn't be
[418]
here on our land today if it wasn't for
[420]
them thank you governor christine
[422]
thank you so much thank you
