Will Your ETF Be Buying More China Shares in June? - YouTube
Channel: Morningstar Europe
[3]
hello and welcome to the Morningstar
[5]
series ask the expert I'm Emma wall I'm
[8]
joined today by Jackie choy
[9]
morningstar's head of ETF research and
[12]
Asia hi Jackie hi Emma
[14]
so finally after some years of
[16]
speculation the index provider MSCI has
[20]
confirmed that from June it will be
[22]
including China a shares in its China
[24]
index and its emerging markets index
[27]
thought perhaps first we could recap
[29]
with what are China Asia shares so
[32]
Chinese shares are companies
[34]
incorporated in China and listed on the
[37]
Chinese exchanges so the re trying
[39]
Shanghai Stock Exchange in these centres
[41]
Stock Exchange only available to
[43]
domestic Chinese investors and I think a
[45]
lot of investors don't realize that that
[47]
when they are buying a China fund quite
[49]
often they're not buying stocks that are
[51]
listed in mainland China they're buying
[53]
stocks that listed in hot here in Hong
[55]
Kong which are called China H shares
[57]
that's correct so there are different
[59]
class of shares for Chinese companies so
[61]
it's a bit of history in there but I
[63]
ensured there are different us the same
[65]
company let's offer enclosure shares HS
[69]
and HS not all companies have a chairs
[71]
or Asia's but a lot of them only have a
[74]
shares so only available on the Chinese
[76]
exchanges and there are also different
[78]
sort of Chinese complete listed
[80]
elsewhere for example Alibaba R is only
[83]
available in the US market and what
[85]
impact will MSCI including these ashes
[89]
have on in particular investors in ETFs
[92]
and passive funds so the change yourself
[95]
at the very first place is only a very
[98]
little amount in number terms if you
[101]
look at the inclusion only super 7 3 % I
[104]
would be included into the MCM index of
[108]
your County Asia's at the first time
[110]
when it's included but this is just will
[114]
only increase as time goes on and so I
[117]
suppose in a nutshell that means that
[120]
investors in these ETFs
[122]
into ETFs that track these indices will
[125]
suddenly have a much higher exposure to
[128]
China than they did before that's
[129]
correct so that killin week increase so
[131]
as I mentioned some su 23% and
[135]
increasing going forward the reason why
[138]
that this could increase is because MSCI
[140]
is either only to include five percent
[142]
of the market cap of that 220 to large
[145]
cap companies in a Chinese Asia is into
[149]
the MSC IEM index so when as and when
[153]
they include the mid caps and also
[155]
increasing that 5% market cap sort of
[158]
frassle the percentage will increase
[161]
that soon put 7 3 percent will increase
[163]
I suppose the big question is is this a
[164]
good thing it's a good thing to have
[166]
more China shares in particular
[168]
Asia's in these portfolios well it
[171]
depends on your view in the Chinese Asia
[173]
market that's for one but in the others
[177]
perspective you look at from a lid from
[179]
a portfolio construction perspective
[181]
this could provide you with some kind of
[183]
education benefit because if you look at
[186]
the MSC atrani index which is the
[188]
version without the Asia's historically
[192]
the correlation with the rest of the
[194]
world I'm a seer world is around 80
[196]
percent the MSCI China a index the only
[200]
a shared version is around 60% with the
[203]
rest of the wall so combining the a
[206]
shares into the MSC IEM index that could
[209]
provide investors with little bit of
[212]
additional duplication benefit I suppose
[214]
the big question also is is this going
[217]
to affect absolutely all individuals who
[219]
invest in passive funds and ETFs in
[222]
emerging markets in China well that's a
[224]
very good question Emma so remember this
[227]
it's change is only for MSC is index
[231]
given by MCA obviously so for each year
[234]
so pass offense tracking the MSC IEM
[237]
index or the MSC attorney index these
[239]
will be affected from June 2018 ACS
[243]
would be included but if an ETF is
[246]
tracking the say for example of in
[248]
EMV index this would not be affected and
[251]
so how do you tell for example looking
[254]
at the two largest providers of ETF
[257]
globally iShares and Vanguard
[259]
whether you will be impacted by this
[261]
change so investors should really look
[264]
at the not just the name what they eat
[266]
did you look at what index they're
[268]
actually tracking for that particularly
[270]
ETF if even I shares a brain guard if
[273]
they track in the MSCI in am index very
[276]
likely they were including a shoes are
[277]
very immediately but I if they track it
[280]
4c index that would be a different story
[283]
and bear in mind that there are
[285]
different versions of the indices as
[287]
well for example Vanguard the Vanguard
[289]
emerging market index ETF our video VW
[292]
they already included Asia's into their
[297]
ETF back in November 2015 because they
[300]
use different version of the index so
[302]
you may find actually if you invest in
[303]
that ETF you already have a shows
[305]
exposure that's correct so look at the
[307]
index not just the name of the ETF
[309]
Jackie thank you very much you're
[310]
welcome Emma this is em all for
[313]
Morningstar thank you for watching
