Channel: The City of Denver

[22]
we want to make sure that your money is used efficiently and effectively we make
[27]
sure controls are in place to ensure that operations are fair and consistent
[31]
we safeguard the public's investment endeavor well as the auditor we make
[36]
sure that Denver operations are managed efficiently and effectively if they're
[42]
not we make recommendations to those agencies as to how they can better
[46]
manage and operate the programs the recommendations can range from better
[52]
governance of a program increasing revenues reducing costs changing
[58]
practices procedures to make sure that things are operating as intended the
[64]
mayor's office really through the departments that we're auditing respond
[69]
to those recommendations we also are responsible for signing over 3,500 city
[75]
contracts every year if I felt that a contract was not in compliance with the
[81]
law I could refuse to sign the contract we also make recommendations that will
[86]
influence policy such as audits that have had state legislation passed as a
[91]
result of Rocky Mountain Human Services provides services to the intellectual
[96]
and developmental disabled population of Denver we conducted an audit we found
[101]
that the services were not necessarily being provided and we found that there
[105]
were some inappropriate use of the dollars Denver tax dollars it was
[110]
surprising because you don't expect to find the level of miss spending that we
[114]
found that odd it was important because it improved the oversight of Rocky
[117]
Mountain Human Services spending of taxpayer funds in their duties to
[122]
provide services and case management for individuals with intellectual
[126]
developmental disabilities taxpayer funding wasn't being spent on services
[130]
for those individuals and with the shortage of both federal and state
[134]
funding it's important to make sure that all those dollars that are set aside for
[139]
that purpose are spent on that purpose it gave rise to the need for the council
[144]
to really look at the contract that resulted in changes to the code
[148]
governing that contract as we move into 2018 well we work with the council on
[154]
the results of the audit to make sure that there was better oversight at the
[158]
Department of Human Services the council actually funded an additional position
[163]
you know that is designed to do oversight and it made sure that there
[168]
were specific services that we that would be auditable in the future another
[181]
audit where we worked with the City Council was an audit where we looked at
[185]
what parks were designated as parks and what we're not it really came up with an
[190]
inventory of parks as a result of that audit the council went about an effort
[196]
to really designate many more parks as parks the reason that's important is
[202]
that once a park is designated as a park it is a park until the people of the
[208]
City and County of Denver voted to not be a park I think that audit assures
[213]
that the parks will be parks well into the future our parks are one of our
[220]
greatest assets and we take a lot of pride in seeing that more parks are now
[225]
designated as parks we want to make sure that Denver continues to be the vibrant
[229]
city that it is that we have ample parks and opportunities for recreation
[235]
going well into the future well thanks for your questions you can read all of
