Partial Heat Embossing - YouTube

Channel: Jennifer McGuire Ink

[0]
hi and welcome it's Jennifer McGuire and
[2]
I hope you're having a great week today
[5]
I wanted to share with you a technique
[6]
that can be used in many creative ways
[8]
and today I'm using it on backgrounds
[11]
this technique I call partial embossing
[13]
this is a good way to get more looks
[15]
from stamps that you may have and today
[18]
I'll be showing it with background
[19]
stamps so I have four examples for you
[22]
and I'm also going to be showing you
[23]
some new beautiful pearl watercolors
[25]
that I'm having a lot of fun playing
[27]
with so I'm going to be using a variety
[30]
of colors of card stock today this
[33]
technique works really well on darker
[34]
colors of card stock a link to the ones
[36]
I used below and I've cut these down all
[39]
to four and a quarter by five and a half
[41]
now you can do this technique on other
[43]
colors but I really like it on the dark
[45]
I'm also using the gansai tambi pearl
[48]
watercolors I'm a big fan of these and
[50]
they're regular watercolors so I was
[52]
excited when they came out with these
[54]
pearl colors they're just gorgeous they
[56]
can be used on white or colored card
[58]
stocks but I particularly like it on the
[61]
color I'm also using for new background
[63]
stamps today from Simon Says Stamp this
[66]
is the Cora background stamp on the left
[68]
in the flora on the right and this is
[70]
the flower medallion on the left and the
[72]
star flower on the right
[74]
and I'll show you cards with each of
[75]
these I really like these backgrounds
[77]
because they're fun for tone on tone or
[80]
for doing some bold coloring by coloring
[82]
each of those things in I'm starting
[84]
with the Simon Says Stamp flora
[86]
background this happens to be my
[87]
favorite and I am going to use my Misti
[90]
stamping tool however you do not need to
[92]
mist you for this technique I just
[94]
wanted to show you that you could use it
[96]
if you wanted to you just need to remove
[98]
the black foam pad from inside the Misti
[100]
when you're using red rubber cling
[102]
stamps like this background I have some
[104]
dark grey cardstock and I'm inking up my
[106]
stamp with Versamark ink and I'm going
[108]
to stamp it on the dark grey and you'll
[110]
notice that I'm not centering it on the
[112]
dark grey but rather stamping it off to
[114]
the side I want that Center focal point
[116]
to be to the side of that gray cardstock
[118]
now you've got to put a lot of muscle on
[120]
this since this is a large stamp and
[122]
then I'm going to go ahead and take it
[124]
out of my Misti and add some clear
[126]
embossing powder now I'm not covering
[128]
the whole piece because I only want to
[130]
heat emboss kind of a pad
[132]
from this background stamp so I've put
[135]
some powder down and I'm using a dry
[137]
brush to brush away the powder from that
[140]
outside area I've kind of picked a line
[143]
that I want to follow around this
[145]
pattern and I'm going to remove any of
[148]
the embossing powder that's outside of
[149]
that and leave it on towards the center
[151]
this is very simple to do with a dry
[154]
brush now this is a pretty complicated
[157]
background image so this one takes a
[159]
little bit of time to remove the powder
[161]
it took me about five minutes but I'll
[163]
show you some later in this video that
[164]
are much faster to do so anywhere I
[167]
remove the embossing powder we'll be
[169]
left with just a tone-on-tone stamped
[171]
image anywhere I leave the embossing
[174]
powder it will end up being raised and
[176]
shiny and darker so we're going to just
[179]
highlight that area from the center of
[181]
that background pattern so instead of
[184]
heat embossing the entire background
[186]
we're doing partial heat embossing just
[188]
heat embossing the areas we want by
[190]
brushing away the powder from areas we
[192]
don't okay so now I'm going to add some
[195]
watercolor this is the gansai tambi
[197]
watercolor in the Pearl so this gives
[200]
you pearly results and it looks really
[202]
cool on dark colors of cardstock I
[204]
started by adding drops of water to each
[206]
of the colors so that it kind of soaks
[208]
in and makes the pink creamy so it'll be
[211]
ready for me to paint so once I've got
[213]
some of the pink on my brush I'm going
[215]
to go ahead and start painting this in
[217]
now one of the fantastic things about
[219]
heat embossing is that it resists the
[221]
paint so it's really easy to stay inside
[224]
of the lines when you heat emboss
[226]
because it kind of makes a watercolor
[228]
pull up in between the lines so I'm just
[232]
going to pick parts of the pattern to
[234]
color in with this pearl watercolor now
[237]
all of that stamping that you see
[239]
outside of the embossing I'm just going
[241]
to leave as is so I'm really only
[243]
painting in the areas that are heat
[245]
embossed I could paint the rest of it
[247]
but I really just wanted to pull the
[249]
attention to the heat embossed area you
[251]
can use any metallic or pearl
[253]
watercolors for this technique however I
[256]
really am happy with the results of this
[258]
particular pearl watercolor I find that
[260]
the colors are intense and they work
[262]
well also on white cardstock
[265]
some of them don't work law and white
[266]
but this one does okay so now that I
[269]
have my panel colored and dried I'm
[271]
going to add my embellishments to it
[273]
here I have a piece of white cardstock
[275]
that I'm adding to some double-sided
[278]
tape now I'll be honest I usually use
[280]
stickit double-sided tape but I can't
[283]
find mine I went to a craft retreat this
[285]
weekend and I can't find it so I'm just
[286]
using be creative double-sided tape it
[289]
really doesn't matter but basically I
[291]
have white cardstock with adhesive on
[293]
the back I'm going to go ahead and die
[295]
cut this with a Simon Says Stamp friends
[297]
die this is a beautiful die it's an
[299]
older one but I use it often and now I
[302]
have a friend's die cut here that's very
[305]
intricate with adhesive already on the
[307]
back and I cut the letter S off so it
[309]
said friend instead of friends I also
[312]
trimmed the back down a little bit and I
[314]
die cut a vellum heart I thought that
[317]
vellum heart would kind of mute out the
[319]
background so the focus can be on the
[321]
sentiment that we're adding so I'm kind
[324]
of laying my word die-cut over this
[326]
remember there's already adhesive on the
[327]
back and once I have this in position
[330]
and everything is done I can press this
[332]
down firmly and my die cut will actually
[334]
hold that heart in place I'm using the
[337]
Simon Says Stamp mom and dad icons stamp
[340]
set this is a new one and I'm taking the
[342]
sentiment that says so happy you're my
[345]
and I'm putting that above the word
[347]
friend I actually cut the sentiment in
[349]
half so that I could stack the words but
[352]
I can always stamp it how it was
[354]
originally intended if I wanted to this
[356]
is a mother and father stamp set but
[358]
there are things in there that you can
[360]
use for other things such as this friend
[362]
card so I stamped it with Versamark ink
[364]
and I'm adding white embossing powder
[366]
and I'll go ahead and heat set that I
[368]
like that the white stamping matches the
[371]
white die-cut friend that we have
[373]
created now I can place this on to my
[376]
stamped panel and I'm going to press
[378]
this down very firmly to make sure that
[380]
it stays and it holds our vellum in
[382]
place on this panel now I will say that
[385]
I wanted the friend word to stand out
[387]
more and when I want something to stand
[389]
out extra what I do is I double up the
[392]
die-cuts or triple them up so I die cut
[395]
two more and you hear them right on top
[397]
of the last one
[399]
and that allows it to kind of pop up and
[401]
have some dimension I added this to a
[403]
four and a quarter by five and a half
[405]
inch note card and now I'm adding some
[408]
sequins
[408]
these are iridescent sequins that are
[411]
perfect for kind of matching that
[412]
pearlescent watercolor that we did I'm
[415]
going to add those with Ranger
[416]
multi-medium and the matte finish that's
[418]
a strong adhesive that's matte drying
[420]
and I'm using some small hero arts gems
[423]
to add to the center of the sequins
[425]
sometimes I like to kind of cover up the
[427]
holes in the sequins with the gem and
[429]
then I can also accent with the gems so
[432]
this kind of pulls the color in but
[434]
doesn't distract from that background
[436]
now I'm also going with the white pearl
[439]
from that gansai tambi watercolor set
[441]
and I'm painting the white onto our
[444]
white die-cut this will allow the white
[446]
cardstock friend to have that pearly
[449]
shine that matches the background
[450]
perfectly this is gorgeous in real life
[453]
the colors more intense from certain
[455]
angles than it is others and lighter
[457]
from certain angles than it is others
[459]
which is what really makes these
[460]
watercolor special now I wanted to show
[463]
you how this also works on lighter
[465]
colored cardstock even white I decided
[468]
to go with a super gray cardstock or
[471]
light gray cardstock for this example
[473]
this card stock is Simon Says Stamp fog
[476]
card stock and I'm using the Simon Says
[478]
Stamp Cora background with the Simon
[481]
Says Stamp smoke ink so I'm first
[483]
stamping this with a grey ink so we'll
[485]
have a darker grey ink on the light gray
[488]
cardstock now what I'm going to do is
[491]
ink this up again after I clean the
[493]
stamp of course ink it up with Versamark
[495]
ink and stamp stamp right on top so what
[499]
we have is a gray ink with Versamark ink
[501]
on top this will allow me to do partial
[504]
embossing and in the areas where we
[506]
don't want the embossing we'll have gray
[508]
because if I just stamp with Versamark
[510]
the Versamark doesn't stand out very
[512]
much on light colored card stocks so I'm
[515]
adding clear and barred sorry white
[517]
embossing powder towards the center of
[519]
this image now this image really is easy
[522]
to do partial embossing I can very
[525]
easily take a dry brush and knock away
[527]
any embossing powder outside from that
[529]
center area and then heat set everything
[532]
in the center
[532]
so now I have a white heat embossed
[535]
image towards the center and just
[536]
regular gray stamping towards the
[538]
outside so I trim that down a bit and I
[541]
again use those same pearl watercolors
[543]
to add bits of color to the center
[546]
remember you can make these watercolors
[548]
less intense by using more water and
[550]
more intense by making it creamy with
[553]
less water or doing multiple layers and
[555]
check it out when you tilt it in light
[557]
it can be either dark or light now this
[560]
card is pretty similar to the first one
[562]
I die cut the word friend from black
[564]
cardstock instead this time and I black
[567]
heat emboss the sentiment so happy
[569]
you're my on vellum so I could add that
[572]
right above the word friend I used just
[575]
a little bit of liquid adhesive behind
[577]
the embossed letters to adhere that
[579]
vellum to the card but you could also
[582]
use stick it double-sided adhesive for
[584]
this but this worked just fine so I'm
[587]
putting the two little vellum sentiments
[588]
above the die cut word and I decided to
[591]
leave it simple by just adding that onto
[593]
a four and a quarter by five and a half
[595]
inch white note card but there you can
[597]
see that the pro watercolours work great
[600]
on light colored card stocks I also
[602]
created matching envelopes with the fun
[604]
new stamp set from Simon Says Stamp
[606]
called sending flowers you can see there
[609]
are some layering flowers in here but
[611]
what I'm using is kind of that label to
[614]
put on the front of an envelope to mail
[615]
your card so I have a pink metallic
[617]
envelope from Simon Says Stamp and I
[620]
have a printed transparency grid from my
[622]
Misti you can also buy that or create
[624]
your own I'm using a bar magnet to hold
[627]
it in place and I'm lining up my little
[629]
label pieces on the front
[631]
I put the frame the lines for the
[633]
address and happy mail for a little
[636]
sentiment right above that now I'll
[638]
close my Misti remove that grid
[640]
transparency and now this is ready to
[642]
stamp on a bunch of envelopes I'm using
[645]
my anti-static powder tool stamping it
[647]
with Versamark ink and white heat
[649]
embossing this well I have all my
[651]
supplies out I might as well do this now
[653]
and then the envelope will be ready when
[655]
it's time to mail you could stamp this
[657]
and not heat emboss but I thought that
[659]
white embossing powder would look really
[661]
nice against this pink metallic envelope
[664]
and I did that for all four of my card
[666]
both so there you can see how it matches
[668]
nicely the purlwise kind of metallic
[671]
envelope matches the pearl watercolor
[674]
that we did on our cards so this is the
[676]
first card that I showed you I really
[678]
like the results of this one how it kind
[680]
of a focal point with the sentiment at
[681]
the center you can see the big
[683]
difference that partial embossing made
[685]
you have the stamped image around the
[687]
outside and the heat embossed image
[689]
towards the inside with the color added
[691]
inside you can also see that the word
[694]
friend has that pearly finished since I
[697]
used the water colors on it too here's
[699]
the second card we made on the lighter
[701]
colored card stock we first stamped with
[703]
the gray ink and then white heat emboss
[705]
just towards the center area and I have
[708]
simple sentiments on that I didn't want
[710]
to add embellishments because I was
[711]
afraid it would be a little distracting
[713]
I created two other cards today this one
[716]
is on craft cardstock and I stamped with
[719]
Versamark ink assignments of stamped
[721]
star flower and partial heat emboss
[723]
towards the center with silver embossing
[725]
powder i water colored that in with the
[728]
pearl watercolor once again and add to
[730]
the sentiment to that I used a different
[732]
assignments of Stamp friend die for this
[734]
one it's from the family and friends die
[737]
set and here we have the Simon Says
[739]
Stamp flower medallion background stamp
[742]
that with Versamark ink on dark card
[744]
stock and then I partially heat emboss
[746]
with clear embossing powder towards the
[748]
center and added the pearl watercolor
[750]
again so there you have a way of using
[753]
partial heat embossing to get more from
[755]
your background stamps I hope this was
[758]
helpful I have links below in my youtube
[760]
description to all the supplies but go
[763]
to my blog for more photos and
[765]
information I thank you for watching be
[767]
sure to check out the other videos in
[769]
the center and I hope to see you again
[770]
soon
