I would describe Disney as magical and fun and fantasy.
[11]
My name is Glynndana Shevlin.
[12]
And I’m 58 years old.
[15]
I’ve been there almost 30 years,
[16]
which will be a big anniversary for me.
[21]
Is it fun?
[22]
Is it a great job?
[24]
Yes.
[25]
But biggest misconception is that we’re paid well.
[34]
I’m not alone.
[36]
Some of us are food insecure.
[39]
I usually wait and eat my lunch around 3:30.
[42]
And that’s my first meal of the day.
[45]
One out of 10 of us are homeless of some sort
[48]
in the last two years.
[50]
Some of us are sleeping in our cars.
[52]
I’ve done that a couple of times.
[60]
I would describe Disneyland as the happiest place
[62]
on earth.
[63]
And it’s definitely one of the best jobs I’ve ever had.
[67]
It’s just a shame that no one can survive on it.
[71]
I never thought, especially being
[73]
a licensed cosmetologist, that I would ever
[76]
be having to sleep in my car, especially not
[79]
for a company like Disney.
[81]
And I’m not excited for when my clients see this and see
[86]
that I’ve been homeless, you know?
[88]
Because it doesn’t say anything about my skill
[90]
level at all.
[97]
Chairman and chief executive officer of the Walt Disney
[100]
Company, Bob Iger.
[103]
Thank you.
[105]
I never quite envisioned it would
[106]
be this grand or this great.
[112]
If a corporation like Disney has enough money
[118]
to pay its CEO over $400 million
[124]
in a four-year period, it damn well
[127]
has enough money to pay its workers.
[131]
[applause and cheering]
[136]
[drumming]
[144]
I just don’t understand how people survive off the money
[146]
that Disneyland pays them.
[151]
Disney can do better by taking care of us.
[154]
[speaking spanish]
[159]
We have so much support in the community.
[161]
These are just issues that need to be resolved.
[163]
We work tirelessly.
[165]
On November 6th, vote for a living wage.
[167]
Enough is enough.
[168]

[185]
Me in 1988 was able to afford a one-bedroom apartment.
[189]
It is now 2018.
[192]
And I’m sleeping in a condo with five other people.
[198]
When they find out that I work at Disney
[200]
as a hairstylist doing these wigs,
[202]
they assume I’m getting paid at least 30 an hour.
[205]
But we absolutely do not.
[209]
To Bob Iger, just —
[210]
we love our jobs.
[211]
Just pay us right, you know?
[214]
We just want to survive.
[215]
