what's up guys welcome back so in this

video we're going to talk about Tesla
[3]
and their business model we're gonna
[5]
take a look at the Giga Factory in the
[6]
Fremont factory and see exactly what's
[8]
going on in each building this is
[10]
important to know where Tesla is out
[12]
today because if you didn't know in the
[14]
future they plan to be 100% vertically
[16]
integrated at their Giga factories and
[18]
they want to make that a model that they
[20]
can then replicate from there whether or
[22]
not we're gonna see this close to 100%
[24]
vertical integration at Giga factory for
[26]
in Berlin is to be determined but Tesla
[28]
has definitely made steps and they're
[30]
definitely trending in that direction
[31]
you may also not have heard of their
[33]
skunkworks
[34]
facility we're gonna cover that as well
[36]
so let's get into it

it all started with the original Tesla
[48]
Roadster in 2008 some of them have VIN
[50]
numbers starting with S which is the
[51]
designation for the UK others start with
[54]
the number 5 which correlates with the
[55]
u.s. parts of the Roadster were sourced
[58]
from around the world and Tesla
[59]
contracted with Lotus to build the
[61]
Roadster his unique chassis the single
[63]
speed gearbox was made in Detroit by a
[65]
supplier called burg Warner brakes and
[67]
airbags were made by Siemens in Germany
[69]
clearly the original roadster was a
[71]
piecemeal experiment from all over the
[73]
world but for North American customers
[75]
the car was assembled in Menlo Park
[77]
California where Tesla employees
[79]
installed the powertrain which is
[81]
composed of the battery pack power
[83]
electronics module gearbox and the motor
[85]
Tesla ended production of the roadster
[87]
in 2012 so this leads us to Tesla's
[89]
first factory which is creatively called
[91]
Tesla factory the one that's in Fremont
[94]
California so it's a pretty cool story
[96]
GM in Toyota actually co-owned this
[98]
plant for a long time they were
[100]
producing upwards of a half a million
[101]
vehicles a year then around 2010 the
[104]
mayor of Fremont actually thought that
[106]
this plant was dead there was no use for
[107]
it and then in comes Tesla to save the
[110]
day they end up taking over this factory
[112]
in Fremont which was their first the
[114]
initial purchase of the Fremont factory
[116]
was for forty two million dollars and
[118]
Tesla then later purchased seventeen
[120]
million dollars of manufacturing
[121]
equipment including spare parts at deep
[123]
discounts relative to new equipment the
[126]
factory is roughly five and a half
[127]
million square feet and was originally
[129]
about ten times too big for what Tesla
[131]
needed and much of the site went unused
[133]
for the first few years fast forward to
[136]
the day where the facility is close to
[137]
being fully utilized the first retail
[139]
delivery of the Model S happened at this
[141]
site in June 2012 today the Fremont
[144]
factory is where the Model S X and three
[146]
are assembled and there are over 10,000
[148]
employees at this location in May of
[150]
2019 Tesla announced they were going to
[152]
shuffle production lines the Fremont
[153]
factory to make space for the Model wide
[155]
production the facility had a production
[157]
capacity of up to 500,000 cars per year
[160]
when Toyota and GM were running the
[161]
plant and so far Tesla has achieved a
[164]
roughly 350 thousand capacity production
[166]
rate with plans to exceed the former
[169]
number for years Tesla had a secret
[171]
location on the second floor of the
[172]
Fremont factory to work on battery cell
[175]
research but recently it seems as though
[176]
this has been moved to a facility
[178]
on Cato Road known as the skunkworks lab
[180]
this is a few minutes down the street
[182]
from Fremont the battery R&D team had
[185]
been focused on designing and
[186]
prototyping advanced lithium-ion cells
[188]
as well as new equipment and processes
[190]
today Tesla has been relying on a
[192]
partnership with Panasonic for its
[194]
battery selves but it seems imminent
[196]
things will be changing in 2020 so this
[199]
moves us to Giga factory 1 Tesla's first
[201]
Giga factory it's in Reno Nevada and it
[204]
went into construction in 2015 and it's
[206]
actually still being built out today and
[208]
as we'll talk about later in the video
[210]
it's still only about 30% built out as
[212]
of today however operations at Giga
[215]
factory one started in 2016 and they had
[218]
the grand opening that year in July at
[220]
that time they only had three of the
[222]
final 21 blocks of the factory built out
[224]
it was aligned on True North so the
[226]
solar panels could be optimized and so
[228]
eventually the factory can be entirely
[230]
self-sufficient using solar wind and
[232]
geothermal sources g1 will have the
[235]
largest footprint in the world when it's
[236]
completed it was built to supply battery
[238]
packs for both its vehicles and the
[240]
stationary storage systems the factory
[242]
started with limited production of power
[244]
walls and Power Packs in 2016 which were
[247]
previously produced at the Fremont
[248]
factory in addition to batteries g1 was
[251]
to be the site to build motors and drive
[253]
units g1 began mass production of the
[255]
2170 lithium-ion cells which are used in
[258]
the model 3 in January of 17 DS cells
[261]
were built from Tesla's partnership with
[262]
Panasonic and Panasonic does own some of
[265]
the cell production equipment so Giga
[267]
factory one produces model 3 electric
[269]
motors and battery packs in addition to
[271]
Tesla's energy storage products
[272]
Panasonic makes the cells which Tesla
[275]
then uses to make battery modules and
[277]
packs for its cars as of 2019 reported
[279]
that g1 is still only about 35 percent
[281]
complete it should be noted in April 20
[286]
1902 battery supply constraints and g1
[289]
was only operating at around 2/3 of its
[291]
35 gigawatt hour per year theoretical
[294]
capacity this battery supply constraint
[296]
is a huge deal as Tesla still plans to
[298]
begin production of the semi road
[300]
certain cyber truck over the next 24
[302]
months there are no official
[303]
announcements for where these vehicles
[304]
will be produced and so moving on to
[307]
Giga factory - in Buffalo New York this
[309]
doesn't get much coverage a lot of
[311]
people don't know about it
[312]
but it's where Tesla's doing most of its
[313]
solar work so it's actually in
[316]
conjunction with Panasonic and as you'll
[318]
see soon it may be shifting in towards
[320]
more of a Panasonic facility but let's
[322]
let's talk about it the site was
[324]
originally a steel manufacturing site
[326]
but the 88 acre property has been
[328]
transformed after Tesla secured the site
[330]
through the controversial Solar City
[331]
acquisition in 2016 Tesla plans to
[334]
create 5,000 clean energy jobs at this
[336]
site over 10 years g2 is actually owned
[338]
by the state of New York and is leased
[340]
by Tesla subsidiary Solar City it
[342]
employs around 800 people currently in
[344]
May of 2019 reuters reported g2 has
[347]
actually function more like a Panasonic
[349]
factory to supply other solar companies
[351]
Panasonic invested in the production of
[354]
solar cells at g2 and Tesla agreed to
[356]
buy those cells to use in their solar
[358]
roof tiles that are made at the factory
[360]
however the report said Tesla has only
[362]
sporadically purchased solar cells made
[364]
by Panasonic according to an employee
[366]
with the rest going to foreign buyers in
[368]
October 2019
[370]
announced version 3 of its solar roof is
[372]
ready to begin production and
[374]
installations will ramp up over the next
[376]
several months
[376]
clearly there are questions as to what's
[378]
really going on at g2 and it will be
[380]
important to watch if Tesla can deliver
[381]
on its goals for the site Tesla solar
[383]
business has clearly not been a focus of
[385]
the company the last few years but this
[387]
could change moving forward and so of
[389]
course with Giga factory 3 we don't have
[390]
to cover too much because it's been all
[392]
over the headlines you probably know
[394]
it's in China and Shanghai where Tesla
[397]
is now producing and delivering the
[398]
model 3 and eventually they'll also be
[400]
delivering model wise but there are a
[402]
few things with regard to battery
[403]
production and logistics that you might
[405]
not be aware of one of the components
[407]
that Tesla knew would not be ready for
[408]
local Chinese production were the
[410]
batteries so Tesla decided to make the
[412]
first wave of cars with battery pack
[414]
shipped from g1 and Nevada g1 has been
[417]
supplying battery packs to g3 since the
[419]
beginning of August Tesla has been
[421]
sending between 400 to 750 battery packs
[424]
per week depending on what was needed at
[425]
Fremont at the time 2019 g3 battery
[428]
packs were shipped over a period of 12
[430]
weeks the plan is the shift to using LG
[432]
chems 2170 batteries as soon as possible
[435]
in 2020 and eventually the second
[438]
building at g3 will be used to make
[440]
battery packs in-house these will
[442]
basically be the same type of 2170 cells
[444]
that panas on
[445]
produces LG Chem will do its best to
[447]
mimic the batteries made by Panasonic
[449]
the word mimic I use here since LG Chem
[452]
has different manufacturing equipment
[454]
and techniques in Panasonic and the
[456]
cells will clearly not be identical
[458]
additionally Tesla determined that the
[460]
cells made by LG Chem have a slightly
[461]
lower capacity there are clear plans to
[464]
produce batteries model 3 and model Y at
[466]
g3 Elon did also mention plans to
[469]
develop an R&D center in China to create
[471]
a custom Chinese car something that's a
[473]
piece of art like the cyber truck in
[475]
November of 2019 Tesla announced that at
[478]
its next Giga factory g4 which will be
[480]
in Germany in Berlin they're gonna start
[482]
with a model Y Elon has said that
[485]
they'll make power trains and other
[486]
battery units there and only time will
[488]
tell if this is the first Giga factory
[490]
where we'll get close to 100% vertical
[492]
integration for Tesla and so early
[495]
expectations for this g4 plant are that
[497]
it will have capacity of up to 750
[499]
thousand cars per year but of course
[502]
that'll be a couple years down the road
[503]
after the Giga factory is opened the
[506]
first phase which can be seen in the
[507]
lower left corner in this picture is
[509]
expected to be completed in July 2021
[511]
and it will support the local production
[513]
of model y in Europe Tesla already
[515]
confirmed that it plans to eventually
[516]
build the model 3at g4 and it will
[518]
presumably be one of the three
[520]
additional sections of the factory Tesla
[522]
also disclosed that it plans to build
[524]
future vehicles other than the model Y
[526]
and model 3 at the factory Tesla is also
[528]
planning a battery cell factory on the
[530]
east side of the plant Tesla is unlike
[532]
most other auto manufacturers as they
[533]
are already heavily vertically
[535]
integrated with plans to be as close to
[536]
100% as possible in the short term this
[539]
has resulted in a lack of profits for
[541]
Tesla as they're constantly investing in
[543]
innovation and new production the long
[545]
term this will result in massive supply
[547]
chain and logistical savings and so
[549]
that's why it's so important to kind of
[551]
watch as Tesla gets closer and closer to
[553]
doing everything in-house as I said
[555]
short term it costs them a lot more but
[557]
long term it's so so vital for them to
[560]
be able to grow without any restrictions
[562]
and to save drastically on all of those
[565]
manufacturing and logistical supply
[567]
chain costs so thank you guys for
