[7]
Oh hi everybody! Today I am going to  talk to you about numbers, and fractions,
[14]
and maybe even Kevin. Ho, I really like Kevin.
[18]
OK, so we all know how to count  things, right? Yes of course you do!
[23]
But do you know how to count parts of things?
[27]
I will show you. First, we need something that  we can count, and also divide into equal parts.
[35]
Ah… How about a pizza?
[37]
Oh no not another pizza example! Hmmm... we need something  else… oh I know, how about me?
[45]
Oh good idea! OK so, now, how many me's do you see?
[53]
That’s right there are one, two, three me’s! Now how many me’s do you see? Yes! There is just
[63]
one me. One whole me! Yay! But now - watch closely  - but don’t worry I am a cartoon so it won’t hurt.
[76]
How many me’s do you see? Are there two me’s?  No not really. There are two parts of me,
[86]
or two equal halves of me. One half  here, and one half here. And when we put
[93]
one half and one half together  there is one whole me. So in math,
[100]
when we have parts of whole things, like  this, we can call these parts fractions! FRACTIONS!
[108]
OK, you did such a good job listening, it is  now time to sing a song… OK that’s enough!
[115]
So as I just showed you, if I divide myself  into two equal parts then I have two halves.
[123]
But what happens if these halves also get divided  into halves? OK watch. And don’t worry I am a
[130]
cartoon so it won’t hurt. So now are there four  of me? No not really, but there are four equal
[141]
parts of me, so we can call them fourths. FOURTHS!  One fourth here, one fourth here, one fourth here,
[151]
and one fourth here! We can also call a fourth  a different word and that word is… quarter.
[158]
QUARTER! So one quarter here, one quarter here,  one quarter here, and one quarter here. And if
[168]
we put four quarters - or four fourths -  of me together there is one whole me!
[176]
OK, let’s review because it might be a little  confusing. Uh oh! Where did I go! Don’t worry. So...
[185]
this is one fourth of me. OR ONE QUARTER! This is  two fourths of me. OR TWO QUARTERS! And two fourths
[196]
is also the same as one half. ONE HALF! This is  three fourths of me. OR THREE QUARTERS! And this is
[207]
four fourths of me. OR FOUR QUARTERS! And four  fourths is the same as one whole. ONE WHOLE!
[216]
Phew, you did such a good job listening, it  is now time to sing a song… OK that’s enough!
[224]
Let’s talk about something else besides me. Do you  know when is another good time to use fractions?
[231]
When we are sharing something, especially if  we want to share something fairly and give
[237]
everybody the same amount. Let’s use something  to help us explain… what can we use? Hmmm...
[246]
I know, how about Kevin? I said Kevin! No I want all the  Kevins! OK, here we have four Kevins.
[257]
Kevin, Extra Kevin, Secret  Kevin, and Funnest Kevin
[264]
What if we have eight cookies  and we want to share these cookies
[268]
fairly to all the Kevins? Let’s try. Move cookies!  OK. Now each Kevin has the same number, one,
[280]
two cookies. Come back cookies!
[285]
Now what happens if two of these cookies disappear?
[293]
Well that means we only have six cookies left.  Let’s try and share them.
[302]
Now each Kevin has one cookie but there are two cookies left. How can we share them fairly?
[310]
It looks like we are going to have to make  some fractions and break the cookies in half!
[318]
Now each Kevin has one cookie and one half  of a cookie. One and one half cookies each!
[327]
OK come back cookies.
[330]
Now what happens if um, five more of  the cookies disappear? Well that means we
[343]
only have one cookie left. Let’s try and share  them. Hey, how can we share one cookie fairly?
[353]
It looks like we are going to have to make some  fractions and break the cookie into quarters!
[360]
Now each Kevin has one fourth - or one  quarter - of a cookie. Don’t be sad Kevins! You got one quarter of a cookie!
[370]
OK, that is all the time we have today for fractions.
[374]
Don’t forget to subscribe to our channel for more  laughing and learning from Scratch Garden. Did
[379]
you know that we have another video where we split  words into parts? Ya we do, it’s called Syllables!
[387]
Go and watch it, and watch other Scratch Garden  videos too. There are so many. This video that you are
[393]
watching right now is just a small small… fraction of all the Scratch Garden Videos. OK bye for now!
