Channel: Business Insider
[0]
hi i'm willie appleman i am in boston
[2]
today i'm heading to fenway park i'm
[4]
going to be meeting with the cfo of the
[6]
red sox we're going to be talking about
[8]
the business side of baseball
[10]
also i brought my mitt
[12]
just in case you're looking for players
[13]
with little to no baseball experience
[15]
but first i gotta get my rental car here
[17]
we go
[18]
this process is super easy i already
[20]
booked a midsize car online with
[22]
national and since i'm an emerald club
[23]
member not to brag i get to bypass the
[26]
counter and head right to the emerald
[27]
isle and choose any car i want
[31]
let's go with this
[32]
[Music]
[36]
time for fenway
[39]
[Music]
[51]
okay i could definitely get used to this
[55]
hey tim hey willy how are you welcome to
[57]
fenway park yeah i'm doing well thank
[59]
you so much this is so
[61]
exciting i just um i'm just really um
[64]
i'm ready you know i'm ready to be here
[66]
yeah i see i see you brought your glove
[68]
yeah just because i thought you know
[69]
tomorrow's opening day and if you guys
[72]
need any extra players i uh i'm ready to
[74]
try out or audition or whatever it is
[77]
okay but you know i don't i don't make
[78]
those decisions i'm the cfo
[81]
yeah but you must have some influence
[82]
not as much as you would think about
[84]
that
[88]
right
[90]
cool yeah yeah
[92]
so as a cfo
[94]
what do you what does your day-to-day
[95]
look like what i love about my job is i
[97]
have oversight of almost every aspect of
[99]
the business you know so whether that's
[101]
what we spend on employees what we spend
[103]
on players what we spend you know on
[105]
travel what we spend on technology you
[108]
know it's a complicated business with
[109]
hundreds of employees around the world
[111]
what's your favorite part about the job
[113]
well i would say that my favorite part
[115]
is that every day is different you know
[116]
we're constantly looking for ways to
[117]
serve our fans better we're constantly
[119]
looking for ways to be innovative um
[121]
it's it's exciting and it's never boring
[123]
how do you find
[124]
not again i'm not asking for me i'm
[126]
asking for a friend how do you find new
[127]
players well you know our we have this
[130]
vast expansive scouting division you
[132]
know they're scouting across the world
[133]
you never know where that next great red
[135]
sox player is going to be so we need to
[136]
cover pretty much the entire globe we
[138]
have amateur scouts that cover all the
[140]
high schools all the colleges and
[142]
they're divided up into regions so we
[143]
might have a scout that covers all of
[144]
texas we might have a scout that covers
[146]
all of california and they're just road
[147]
warriors they're on the road constantly
[149]
that travel seems so complex how do you
[151]
manage all that yeah well you know
[153]
obviously we're using all modes of
[154]
transportation but a lot of it happens
[156]
on the ground with cars and i think one
[157]
of the partnerships that's most
[158]
effective for us is the business rental
[160]
program in partnership with enterprise
[162]
and national because they have a whole
[163]
host of services that help us move
[165]
everybody around in cars what's it like
[167]
when a whole team goes to a city you
[169]
know do the players get on a big bus do
[170]
the players like jump in a van what's
[172]
that like yeah it depends on the city
[173]
but in fort myers florida down to spring
[175]
training all of the players to get
[176]
around a car because it's sort of you
[178]
know you need they need the flexibility
[180]
to be able to move around on their own
[181]
so one of the more challenging aspects
[183]
of our business is trying to come up
[184]
with 150 to 200 rental cars in fort
[187]
myers for basically a six week period
[189]
for all of our players and front office
[191]
staff that need to be down there how has
[193]
travel changed since cover 19. well i
[195]
think when i think about it you know we
[196]
were always a company that we we feel
[198]
like are built on relationships you know
[200]
whether it's sponsor relationship season
[201]
ticket relationships player
[202]
relationships and so we always valued in
[204]
person covid caused us to pause that we
[207]
had to do you know things remotely we
[209]
feel like there's so much more value in
[212]
those really in those interactions
[213]
taking place in person with all these
[215]
changes it feels like you know red sox
[217]
nation needs maybe one more
[220]
player in the fold yeah no i think i
[223]
think we're we're pretty okay there but
[225]
you know we did get you a jersey you
[226]
know we did get you a jersey you can
[228]
sort of feel like you're part of the
[229]
team it has your name on the back oh my
[231]
gosh
[232]
tim you're 11.
[234]
i can get into the dugout with this no
[236]
i'll get special access on the field uh
[238]
probably not actually yeah yeah cool
[240]
cool cool can i get into the player
[242]
after party definitely not
[244]
but looks great on you
[246]
thank you so much 10 plus thanks man
[252]
[Music]
[256]
what a great day
[257]
i got the inside scoop on the red sox
[259]
and i think i'm part of the team now
[263]
these people want autographs sorry i'm
[264]
not signing autographs hey
[267]
man it's crazy the fans are nuts
[269]
[Laughter]
[272]
i gotta get out of here
[273]
[Music]
[285]
you
