Channel: Irene Zhu

[0]
hello everyone welcome to my channel my聽 name is Irene I hope everyone is doing well聽聽
[5]
today i want to share my not so good experience聽 with my current super fund and the lessons聽聽
[10]
that I learned from a mistake and I'll walk you聽 through to my comparison process of the top five聽聽
[15]
super funds rated by Canstar now let's get started聽 alright our current super fund is with mlc which聽聽
[23]
used to be nab subsidiary until january 2020 and聽 we were set up with the meeting by nab's financial聽聽
[30]
advisor and later on she successfully persuaded us聽 to switch our super from host plus which is a much聽聽
[36]
better fund to mlc and after that we had meetings聽 with her semi-annually for a year all she did was聽聽
[44]
talking up mlc's super and is insurance look聽 at the graph your super balance has grown a lot聽聽
[51]
but seriously without a benchmark for reference聽 it's all nonsense talking as long as we realize聽聽
[56]
it's completely useless to pay someone who聽 does nothing but selling their products聽聽
[60]
we cancel her service and stop seeing her but even聽 now i still receive the statements indicating that聽聽
[67]
if you have any questions please contact your聽 financial advisor abc which is incredible聽聽
[72]
two months ago i logged into my mlc account and聽 i found that i couldn't see my insurance cover聽聽
[78]
so i called the customer service and i turned out聽 to be mlc super and mlc interests are different聽聽
[83]
companies now and i was like shouldn't they notify聽 us in the first place what's worse is that i don't聽聽
[89]
even know how i can log into the other website聽 to see my insurance cover and apparently you need聽聽
[94]
to call the customer service and to get your聽 customer number which by the way is not shown聽聽
[100]
in any statements whatsoever so looking back the聽 whole matter we definitely have fell into a sales聽聽
[107]
trap and here are the lessons that i learned from聽 my mistake and i hope you don't make the saying聽聽
[112]
the first lesson that i learned is don't fall聽 for the professional title the financial advisor聽聽
[117]
sounds very glamorous and professional but this聽 title doesn't necessarily guarantee that they will聽聽
[123]
do the ethical deeds for your best interest聽 in january 2020 a law firm launched a class聽聽
[128]
actions lawsuit against national australia bank聽 for delaying the move of 6.3 billion belonging to聽聽
[135]
more than 330 000 super customers a decision that聽 allowed the big four banks financial advices to聽聽
[142]
continue to charge lucrative fees and nab is just聽 one of them recently you may have realized this聽聽
[149]
kind of shocking headlines of the big four banks聽 in australia increase in frequency the reason for聽聽
[154]
this is the government has initiated a formal聽 independent public inquiry the royal commission聽聽
[160]
into the misconduct in banking superannuation聽 financial services industry obviously the聽聽
[166]
main drive for the big four is the profit and the聽 advice provided by the financial advisor could be聽聽
[172]
heavily biased by their monetary incentives聽 such as the sales target or commission聽聽
[178]
which makes the advice not 100 general for my聽 case i shouldn't have trusted her that much聽聽
[184]
and the second mistake that i made is that i聽 didn't dare to say no you probably have the聽聽
[188]
similar experience when a salesperson is trying聽 to say something and you just couldn't say no聽聽
[193]
so i didn't say no to her even that i realized聽 what she was talking about was all mlc products聽聽
[199]
so don't be afraid to say no when you realize what聽 you're paying for it doesn't bring you any value聽聽
[205]
and i should blame my listeners i should have done聽 more research by myself it's shocking to see how聽聽
[211]
it is rated by the real customers and things like聽 many things thieves and weak financial planners聽聽
[218]
unfortunately i can't read at zero star which is聽 still too much and also it takes me too long to聽聽
[223]
get out of it so listen learn and time to move on聽 to another super fund and i started my research聽聽
[229]
by using the resources like cancer morningstar聽 product review and individual superfund website聽聽
[235]
and during my process i found that there are聽 five main types of super funds from corporate聽聽
[242]
super funds public sector super funds retail super聽 funds and industry super funds and self-managed聽聽
[249]
super funds retail super funds are generally聽 managed by the banks or insurance companies聽聽
[254]
or wealth management companies industry super聽 funds were originally started by trade union or聽聽
[260]
employee associations but nowadays most of them聽 are open to the public except some are still聽聽
[266]
linked to a particular sector such as the uni聽 super is for those who work in the university聽聽
[272]
or research sector the main difference between聽 retail and industry super funds is how they manage聽聽
[278]
their profits retail super funds generally聽 return the profits to the shareholders and聽聽
[283]
investors well industry super funds return聽 their profits to their members which makes聽聽
[288]
industry super funds historically provide higher聽 benefits to their members after taxes and fees聽聽
[294]
so i took the top five super funds that rated聽 by cancer and then i compared their fees their聽聽
[300]
investment options their five-year investment聽 performance and their reputation and service level聽聽
[306]
by the customer reviews and insurance options and聽 the five super funds that i'm going to compare聽聽
[312]
are host plus australian super sun super big聽 super and q super now let me show you what i found聽聽
[319]
let's compare the fees first which is the聽 most tricky part and the most important part聽聽
[324]
imagine you and your employee inject money聽 monthly to your super hoping that it can help聽聽
[329]
you to build your wealth as soon as possible and聽 it turned out to be the principle and the return聽聽
[335]
just get eaten by a admin fees investment fees聽 and transaction fees all different social fees聽聽
[342]
that stated in the tiny little words in the聽 policy so i try to dig as much as i can but聽聽
[348]
feel free to comment if i miss anything the major聽 fees normally include admin fee which is a fixed聽聽
[353]
number for all different investment options and聽 the investment fee the portfolio that needs more聽聽
[359]
active management will charge a higher fee and聽 different fees like indirect cost ratio and other聽聽
[364]
fees will be charged by different super phones聽 i give the phone that charge the highest fee a聽聽
[370]
one point and the cheapest fund gives you the聽 five points it looks like the q super charges聽聽
[374]
the lowest fee for the 50 000 super balance聽 next i test out the investment performance聽聽
[381]
for the five-year investment horizon because the聽 idea is not to switch from super to another super聽聽
[388]
so my investment horizon with one super is at聽 least five years onwards it looks like the stamp聽聽
[394]
super outperformed the rest of the four super聽 funds on the balanced option so i'll give you聽聽
[400]
the five points now let's look at their investment聽 options hostplus offers five different investment聽聽
[406]
options and the first four options gives you聽 different levels of control so they've got the聽聽
[411]
premix which they have already made the package聽 with the fixed percentage in different asset聽聽
[418]
classes the second investment option that allows聽 you to determine the percentage of different asset聽聽
[424]
classes in your portfolio if you want more control聽 you can choose the individual manager investment聽聽
[429]
option you can choose the fund manager either from聽 macquarie to blackrock or if you want completely聽聽
[436]
control that you want to buy and sell some聽 individual stocks you can choose the choice plus聽聽
[442]
investment option which literally that you can do聽 a real-time trading for the companies in axx 300聽聽
[450]
and now let's look at the australian super so it聽 looks like it offers a similar tiers of options聽聽
[456]
with host plus they offer the premix the diy mix聽 and the member direct which is similar to hostplus聽聽
[463]
choice plus investment option the only option聽 that they don't have to choose your font manager聽聽
[468]
which hostpass have so for this particular reason聽 i'll give australian super a four points and host聽聽
[474]
plus a five points now let's look at the sun聽 super sunsuper offers 19 investment options by聽聽
[481]
two main categories they got the multi asset and聽 the single asset obviously multi assets allows you聽聽
[487]
to invest in the fund that is a mix of different聽 asset classes from stocks to cash to fixed income聽聽
[494]
and other asset classes and the single asset聽 allows you to invest in a particular asset聽聽
[500]
class compared to the above three super funds big聽 supers investment options are simpler they only聽聽
[506]
have nine different investment options from mixed聽 up with sort of multi assets and single asset聽聽
[513]
options let's see the q super q super has four聽 different investment options from lifetime聽聽
[519]
qsuper this lifetime option instead of to let you聽 to choose how aggressive you want your investment聽聽
[526]
portfolio to be so they automatically will set聽 up and packaged up a asset class with different聽聽
[533]
percentage based on your age and your super聽 balance which is very interesting and they聽聽
[538]
have the diversify options of course is the聽 multi assets and the single sector options聽聽
[543]
from different from cash to bonds fixed income and聽 international shares and austrian issues and of聽聽
[550]
course the self investor is similar options as the聽 hostplus choice plus and australian super option i聽聽
[557]
give different scores based on how extensive the聽 investment options are from different super funds聽聽
[562]
but to be honest if you are given too many聽 options you probably just ended up with聽聽
[567]
the default option the balance option to me how聽 extensive the options are is probably not a big聽聽
[573]
deal as long as i can find investment options that聽 fits to my investment goals and my risk tolerance聽聽
[580]
with the lowest fees possible i'll be happy now聽 let's look at the customer reviews i'm i'm always聽聽
[586]
fascinated to see the detailed bad experience from聽 the real customers about their super funds and i聽聽
[593]
believe people wouldn't take the time to write the聽 long stories to warn the prospective customers to聽聽
[599]
stay away from them so it's a good reference聽 if you want to compare not only super funds聽聽
[604]
but other goods and services before you buy them聽 from websites like product review so out of the聽聽
[610]
five super funds that they tested the transparency聽 customer service rates and fees so i give the聽聽
[617]
highest points to the highest rated which is the聽 big super and the next one i give four to the sun聽聽
[624]
super and three points to q super and two to house聽 plus and one to australian super many low rating聽聽
[632]
reviews mentioned that how difficult that they聽 claim from certain insurance and income production聽聽
[636]
is mostly mentioned one and the premium of the聽 insurance is a big lump sum outflow from your聽聽
[643]
super now let's look at the insurance normally聽 that you will have the life insurance the tpd聽聽
[649]
insurance and the income protection issues these聽 are the three main insurance that you will need聽聽
[654]
and some super they will offer other extensive聽 options such as the host plus has special life聽聽
[661]
events insurance and the parental premium waiver聽 and personal super plan insurance so here i聽聽
[667]
only give different marks based on their how聽 extensive their options are so it looks like聽聽
[673]
host plus has the most extensive options all聽 the other four super funds they either have聽聽
[679]
life insurance or life and tpd combined insurance聽 and all of the fine super offers income protection聽聽
[686]
for my case we have live and tpd insurance聽 and income protection with mlc and we will聽聽
[692]
probably stick with these basic plans to the next聽 super and people will ask what is the sort of聽聽
[699]
guideline of how much we should be covered the聽 reference guideline from the barefoot investor聽聽
[705]
is 12 times of your annual pay for the tpd and聽 live combined insurance and 75 of your pay as聽聽
[714]
your income protection now let's have a look at聽 what points i gave based on the five criterias聽聽
[720]
and it looks like the cube super has 18 points聽 which is the highest but the points are just聽聽
[726]
going to give me a reference point because there聽 are actually two bugs of my comparison method one聽聽
[733]
it is based on a 50 000 balance on a default聽 investment option which is the balanced option聽聽
[740]
normally 70 on stocks and 30 on the cash facing聽 kind of other essay classes so it may not be the聽聽
[748]
investment option that is you're looking for the聽 second bug of my comparison method is that i gave聽聽
[754]
each criteria equal weight which makes the total聽 sum scores not accurate for me it's all about to聽聽
[762]
grow my super as big as it can be so there are聽 two factors one is the inflows so which are the聽聽
[770]
employees contribution and your contribution and聽 the investment options performance and the outflow聽聽
[775]
is the fees so what i'm looking for here is to聽 find a gross fund that offers a lowest cost as聽聽
[782]
possible because i don't want my phone to pay聽 any farm managers expensive meals and wines 35聽聽
[788]
year olds has 50 000 in a fund and contributes 5聽 000 a year over 30 years with average return of 8聽聽
[795]
a fund that charges 1 a year in fees and they聽 found charges 0.02 fee would have wait for it 226聽聽
[804]
000 difference in the super balance in 30 years聽 that's a lot of money so the bottom line is that聽聽
[812]
you need to find a investment option that聽 suits for your age your risk tolerance and聽聽
[816]
your investment goal with the lowest fees possible聽 so i'll put a comparison chart because different聽聽
[822]
investment options charge it differently on my聽 patreon page and hopefully if you don't have time聽聽
[827]
to check the pds the policy disclosure statements聽 that chat will help you so what super funds are聽聽
[834]
you currently with and are you happy with it聽 please leave a comment about any experience聽聽
[839]
good and bad because i like to know well thanks聽 so much for watching i'll see you next week bye
