INSIDE BARBARA CORCORAN'S $13M PENTHOUSE | Secret Lives Of The Super Rich - YouTube
Channel: CNBC Prime
[0]
I'm in Manhattan to visit my good friend
[2]
and fellow Shark Tank investor Barbara Corcoran
[5]
Barbara!
[7]
Kevin, about time!
[8]
So this is your place
Barbara? Yep it is!
[12]
what exactly is this room?
[15]
it's the TV room.
[16]
You didn't pay $13 million bucks for this
[18]
room with a ping-pong table in it
there's got to be more so nice ping-pong
[20]
That's a nice ping pong table.
[21]
I know but I get the feeling this
is not the room it's not oo-la-la room.
[24]
Not the el supreme.
[25]
All right, all right, I'll show you my
kitchen that's what my heart is.
[30]
So this is the WOW room.
[35]
This is spectacular!
[38]
This is one of the reasons why I fell in love with the apartment.
[41]
I wanted to have a green house to grow things.
[42]
That's what I do for a hobby.
[44]
But owning an apartment in Manhattan can mean putting up with unimaginable headaches
[49]
Barbara almost had to destroy this beautiful kitchen
[52]
after dropping big bucks to renovate it.
[54]
Right after I started the renovation the city came in and told me I had to remove it,
[58]
because I had no proof that I had it the right to have it.
[62]
Which was bizarre, I was sick with worry
[64]
until a young man I found a job for 20 years ago in the building department
[67]
helped me out.
[69]
He took his whole staff down to the basement of City Hall
[72]
He turned up the old canvas plan
with a stamp of approval on it
[76]
and I was able to go to the city and say: "you can't think me take it down!"
[80]
so that's gold.
[81]
If I had lost this green house I would have demolished the value
[84]
by two million dollars
[85]
Move over I'm getting on with you
[87]
now this is real estate!
[93]
Whoa! that's quite a view.
[95]
It's a front row seat and
[97]
no one could build in front of this.
[99]
that's called insurance policy.
[100]
I get it because nobody could build in the
park.
[103]
It's not easy to find an apartment this unique in Manhattan
[107]
just ask Barbara this purchase was years in the making
[110]
I got this by accident. This was a
bad real estate recession, I was trying
[115]
to keep Corcoran Group in business, so I
got a part-time job delivering packages
[118]
I delivered the package to the woman who lived upstairs
[122]
she's very elderly and I said please if you ever sell this apartment would you call me first.
[128]
well she looked at me with pity. (laughs)
[129]
Like you're delivering a package, and you can buy her place?
[131]
I'm gonna buy her penthouse!
[133]
but of course time went by, I made a big
[136]
success in the real estate business
[137]
and she called me and said I'm thinking of selling my home
[141]
and I came over right away.
[143]
So the point of the story is relationships matter when you're trying to get premium real estate.
[147]
No. Relationships matter, but more important than that dreaming matters.
[150]
I envisioned myself living here.
[153]
Why don't you just tell me the truth, how much did you pay for this place?
[155]
$10 million dollars.
[156]
And then you spent how much to bring it up to what it is now?
[159]
$3 million.
[160]
So that's $13 million that you're in for.
[162]
and how much could you get for it today?
[163]
probably twelve I would say.
[165]
So why would I consider you a good investor
[168]
if you're going to lose a million dollars in your first year of operations?
[170]
Because I over improved it on
purpose,
[172]
and I'll be living here for ten years,
[174]
New York's a crazy market but
one thing I know for sure
[177]
I will make a lot of money.
[178]
Ready, here's my offer
[179]
I don't want to hear the offer.
[180]
I'll give you 8.
[181]
(laughs) Come on with me,
[182]
Come on I'm showing you the door. (laughs)
[184]
This video is not over yet...
[187]
This is one of the most exclusive events we've ever done.
[192]
It's like impossible to get in, you need clearance,
[195]
calls, background checks,
security
[197]
and we are doing showings one by one.
[201]
Come on a night thank you very
much
[203]
-Are you guys familiar with the desert?
Yes, that's an amazing view.
[206]
That's kind of our million-dollar view
[208]
and it's you know the snow-capped mountains it's tough to beat.
[211]
these people are the type of people that can invite Warren Buffett
[214]
and Bill Gates for beer without a second
thought.
[217]
High-end real estate meets real drama...
[220]
why would you even think like that
[224]
because there's you we're not there at
the showing
[227]
you can talk to the buyer and buyer's agent.
[229]
-I did
[230]
-I don't have to have
anything to do with that okay but when it comes to my sellers.
[233]
I will be involved in every square inch of every
[236]
negotiation that we do always.
[239]
so never do that and I'm not trying to be a dick to you,
[241]
but it's just offensive.
[242]
I just wanted... -
[244]
You wanted what?!
[245]
I just thought you would be too busy and...
[248]
I'm not too busy handle my own (bleep) life, I have my life down.
[250]
Yes.
[251]
Thank you.
