Trump's Lawyers Beg Appeals Court To Shield His Tax Returns From Congress - YouTube
Channel: The Ring of Fire

Donald Trump's lawyers have apparently been very,聽
very busy this week. In addition to filing the聽聽
[6]
lawsuit against Hillary Clinton and the DNC,聽
Donald Trump's lawyers were also in court this聽聽
[10]
week, arguing in front of an appellate judge聽
panel that the House ways and means committee聽聽
[16]
should never under any circumstances, get聽
their hands on Donald Trump's tax returns.聽聽
[22]
A matter that had technically been settled last聽
December when a Trump appointed judge actually聽聽
[28]
said, yeah, your legal reasoning is, is bogus聽
and, uh, you're gonna have to turn over those聽聽
[34]
tax returns. Well, of course, as they promised,聽
they appealed it. This week they got a hearing聽聽
[39]
and even, by the way, one of the聽
conservative judges on that court聽聽
[43]
much like the previous conservative judge who聽
sided against Trump, the conservative justice,聽聽
[49]
judge David Sentelle, the senior judge said this.
Your pleading may not carry the ball for you聽聽
[56]
because there may be a legislative actor who聽
has two purposes. You allege they have one,聽聽
[61]
and I'm asking you, why isn't it possible they聽
have two? I like that line of questioning,聽聽
[68]
by the way, from the judge, because honestly聽
it just feels like something I would say like,聽聽
[72]
okay, well you're saying they only have one聽
reason. Why not two? I mean, really like I could聽聽
[80]
see myself saying that if I was on that bench, but聽
here's the thing. They went to court arguing that,聽聽
[84]
hey listen, the ways and means committee just聽
wants to get the tax returns because they wanna聽聽
[88]
embarrass Donald Trump. That's their reason.聽
And the judge says, okay, well technically聽聽
[93]
that may be part of it. But if they say they聽
got a legislative reason, then we kind of have聽聽
[98]
to go with that. You know, we can't prove either聽
thing. We can't prove, you can't prove lawyers,聽聽
[106]
that they wanna do this to embarrass Donald Trump.
Right? You can't prove something that hasn't聽聽
[111]
happened and something that hasn't been explicitly聽
said. Sorry, that's the way the law works. So聽聽
[121]
we have to assume that they're being honest about聽
their claim that they wanna make sure the IRS is聽聽
[129]
auditing a former president. Well, technically聽
president at the time when they requested the聽聽
[133]
tax returns, we just wanna make sure everything's聽
on the level. Make sure the IRS is doing their聽聽
[137]
job and if they're not, we need to come up聽
with legislation, you know, to kind of guide聽聽
[142]
them through auditing a president of the United聽
States. Fair enough, right? Is it a bogus reason?聽聽
[148]
Honestly, I kind of feel like it probably is.聽
But at the same time, I don't care either.聽聽
[153]
Like you asked them to give you a reason聽
in the early days of this legal challenge,聽聽
[158]
they gave it to you. So it doesn't matter that聽
you don't like it. It doesn't matter that you聽聽
[164]
don't believe it. You asked for it. They gave聽
it to you. And every judge that has looked at聽聽
[171]
it prior to this has said, nah, they got you.
You wanted 'em to do this and they did it.聽聽
[178]
And again, the judge that ruled on聽
this back in December and sided against聽聽
[182]
Donald Trump was a Trump appointee.聽聽
[185]
The lead judge on this appellate panel is a聽
conservative judge appointed by a Republican.聽聽
[192]
Like even they are looking at this, like you聽
guys have no hope. Your argument is that bad.聽聽
[200]
So it's likely Donald Trump is going to lose this聽
case as well. And eventually as he always does,聽聽
[206]
he's gonna appeal it to the Supreme Court. You聽
know, this thing is gonna drag on probably beyond聽聽
[211]
the 2022 midterms, which means that by the聽
time the tax returns are actually released,聽聽
[216]
you're probably gonna have a conservative聽
majority in the House and then the聽聽
[219]
committee's not even gonna want 'em anymore. So聽
who the hell knows what's gonna happen with this?聽聽
[224]
All we know, you know, fairly certainly is聽
that Donald Trump will continue to lose.聽聽
[231]
He just wants to drag it out to the point where聽
even if he loses it doesn't matter anymore.
