[32]
Right now we're in the basement of an abandoned temple
[35]
As we entered, the exact purpose of the building and its history were unknown to us
[39]
but it would soon be revealed as we explored We're only just in the basement and it's still like
[44]
already really ornate
[46]
It seems like there's stuff in here, too. It's not just cleared out
[57]
These were filters for when a bunch of people smoked in here, it would filter out the smoke
[63]
It's literally called a smoke eater
[79]
These are marble staircases.... that's what these
[96]
Oh stained glass even
[98]
[inaudible]
[117]
Wow, this is a fantastic building though. This is just the lobby
[138]
Even the radiator is detailed, that's awesome
[149]
"A Memory of Nobles"
[160]
Recorder office to record meetings I guess
[166]
So yeah, what do you know about this place? I don't know any of that. I just know it looks cool as fuck
[175]
Let's go in here, we might find some clues as to what this was
[187]
Is this Hebrew, Bryan?
[189]
No- It's not Hebrew? That's Arabic
[194]
Oh yeah, it says "ancient Arabic order Nobles of the Mystic Shrine"
[201]
So this literally all just sounds like cult like gibberish
[204]
I mean I have no idea what this place was and if it was like actually called like [?] or something the
[209]
Freemasons or whatever? But listen to this, it just sounds like gibberish
[214]
"The Edict of 13th July last prohibiting the communication of the order except under emerging conditions
[220]
Which should alone warrant the issue of
[222]
Dispensation for such purpose has aroused the officers of subordinate bodies to the importance of the ritual and accessories
[228]
Until now there is not to my knowledge any temple in this jurisdiction
[231]
Which is not fully equipped and in condition to render the ceremonial as prescribed by the statutes." That's the first paragraph in this book
[239]
I'm sure if I went on it would go even crazier
[243]
So now we've learned that this temple belonged to an organization called the Ancient Arabic Order of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine or
[249]
"Shriners" for short it's a Masonic body
[252]
that's been around since the late 1800s and was once seen as one of the most prestigious
[255]
Organizations to be a part of This receipt is literally dated
[259]
1912
[261]
Look at some of the calligraphy like on this piece of paper right here
[268]
This bathroom is pretty creepy looking
[301]
Just a bunch of trophies
[308]
They added the drop ceiling over these windows that go up way more
[316]
Hate it when places that just add drop ceiling and cover up shit like that
[326]
Let's go up a floor to see if there's more offices. Alright, I'm gonna go up the other side of you
[340]
Well 'guess there's not more offices This is the main attraction
[353]
Wow look at that stained glass That's unbelievable
[359]
It's got the crescent moon symbol right in the middle and repeated many times actually around the edge
[375]
Despite the presence of Arabic in the name of the
[378]
organization, the Arabian architecture, and the crescent moon symbols throughout, the temple actually had nothing to do with Islam
[384]
In fact, the Shriners were founded by New York City elites
[388]
The middle-eastern decor was simply part of a theme they adopted after attending
[391]
exclusive parties held by Iranian diplomats
[394]
It's a pretty textbook case of cultural appropriation, but it certainly resulted in the construction of beautiful and distinctive buildings such as this one
[402]
So the floor up would just be like
[406]
the projector and stuff
[416]
There's a lot of seating in here
[422]
Shit there's still clothes in here...wow
[427]
It's like what they would wear if they were gonna start...
[433]
Their ceremonial garb
[438]
This place is- there's a lot left
[445]
Wow
[450]
Backstage area They had a dressing room
[472]
More Christmas decorations... a full Christmas tree
[478]
in those arches there are speakers
[491]
They probably would have had actual musical instruments back here back in the day like a piano or an organ or something and
[497]
Then in modern times they just replaced them with speakers
[504]
We can go up there on those stairs
[507]
I know, it's a catwalk or something
[509]
Want to go up on the catwalk?
[523]
There's a ladder to the roof
[527]
We can go up this ladder and go up above the stage area
[532]
Walking up here does not seem too safe, so we probably won't
[561]
Oh, now it got really dim
[593]
What's with these weird paper mache horses
[596]
These big old stage lights
[618]
Holy cow the echo is insane right here
[622]
[various clicking noises as an example]
[628]
Bryan you have to experience this, this is literally nuts
[634]
Get in the dead center though, it's craziest in the dead center
[638]
Wow, that's actually pretty crazy
[645]
[Michael purposefully makes the floor squeak by moving his legs]
[648]
Sounds like laser beams [squeaking continues]
[654]
Oh! I'd bet we can do the whispering corner in here
[657]
You go in that corner
[659]
You go in that corner. I go in that corner, and then we whisper up and we'll be able to hear each other
[665]
Let's try it
[670]
[whispering] Alright, Bryan, can you hear me?
[671]
Oh my god, I can [general snickering and celebration]
[673]
I can hear you like you're right next to me
[675]
I know, this is crazy
[680]
Oh my god. It sounds like you're right next to me. I know what the...
[684]
Psst, psst! Look behind you
[686]
What? [more giggling ensues]
[708]
Yeah, so there'd be lighting and projectors up here probably those lights we saw in there
[716]
What's up there, the Attic?
[719]
No... Well, I mean yes, but even better
[722]
Even better than the Attic
[731]
Be super careful
[805]
It's pretty incredible
[814]
Let's go through this convenient hole in the curtain. I don't know probably just goes to the stage
[823]
An exit into backstage
[839]
There's still a backdrop up
[850]
These are all dimmer switches if only there was power in here
[870]
a lot of curtain and lighting adjustments here
[902]
These were all their lockers
[910]
These were double door lockers
[919]
It's a big roll of toilet paper more than double this is also their locker in here
[924]
That might be the oldest looking microwave. I've ever seen
[934]
All right
[935]
This is definitely way cooler than I thought it would be
[937]
Yeah
[938]
There's a shit ton of stuff left inside look at this
[943]
Perfect some are broken, but
[946]
Most of them are intact tons of them in here... teacups
[951]
it's unreal
[967]
The Ancient Arabic Order of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine is still alive and well today although
[972]
They are now officially known as Shriners International
[976]
You may be familiar with them from their network of hospitals called the Shriners Hospital for Children
[979]
where they provide treatment to any child in need at little to no cost
[982]
As for the temple itself it may see a new future
[985]
the community appears very
[987]
Interested in preserving the structure and sometime after the filming of our video the building was surveyed to determine the cost of restoration
