SWEEP PICKING With Stevie T! - YouTube

Channel: Steve Terreberry

[0]
hey what's going on I'm Stevie tee and
[2]
some of you may recall that I already
[5]
did how to sweep pic video in the past
[8]
however I did that video back in like
[12]
1953 this is fun this is fun
[16]
that was some primitive stuff man so I
[19]
think it's time to bring a sweet picking
[21]
tutorial to the current century this
[24]
time I'm not only gonna teach you guys
[26]
how to sweep pic but I'm going to teach
[28]
you guys in form of a song two birds one
[32]
stone
[32]
BAM so here is the song that you guys
[36]
are going to learn
[40]
[Music]
[49]
that's right if you guys stick to it you
[52]
guys won't be playing that song women
[55]
will be coming up to you like Oh kiss me
[57]
and if you guys follow my link in the
[61]
description you can get a 7-day free
[63]
trial with musician and search for
[65]
stevt:when our little sweet pick tuna
[69]
jizz called and you could play along
[71]
with my tab and I'm sure a lot of you
[73]
have seen musicians ads before YouTube
[75]
videos that they are gonna help enormous
[78]
ly for learning this song so let's get
[80]
to it
[82]
well here I am
[84]
I bet you guys would never see me from
[86]
this angle huh mmm all right I'm gonna
[88]
try this angle because this is the angle
[91]
that you can see on your guitar this is
[94]
looking through your eyes now sweet
[96]
picking is totally different than your
[98]
regular picking instead what we want to
[101]
do is glide our pick fluently up or down
[104]
the strings so instead of this we want
[108]
this your pick is just gonna fluently
[114]
fall into the next string so to kind of
[116]
get used to that just mute your strings
[118]
and practice that all right all right so
[125]
the first pattern of our little sweepy
[127]
sweepy song starts off with our pinky on
[129]
the 14th fret of the e I'm not gonna
[132]
upstroke that and then we're gonna pull
[135]
off onto the 10th fret of the e like a
[138]
doorbell
[140]
but someone answer the damn door so the
[142]
next note is with our second finger the
[145]
fu finger on the 12th fret of the B
[147]
we're gonna upstroke that and next note
[151]
is the 11th fret on the g string and
[153]
this is the top note of our sweep so
[155]
we're gonna down stroke that one and
[156]
then just go back the way we came but
[160]
now we're gonna down stroke down stroke
[163]
and repeat so the picking pattern goes
[169]
like this it's like a dance up bluff up
[176]
down down down up pull up up down down
[178]
down or something I don't know
[181]
and pattern number two uses the exact
[183]
same fingers but this time we're doing
[185]
frets 12 on the e upstroke pull off on
[190]
the 9th fret of the e with your first
[192]
finger upstroke the tenth note of the B
[196]
string with your second finger and then
[198]
at the same time moving your 1st finger
[200]
onto the 9th fret of the g and back down
[204]
[Music]
[208]
still using that up pull up up down down
[211]
down up pull up up down down down so why
[215]
don't we play along with the tab on
[217]
musician at 25% speeds so nice and slow
[220]
we'll try these two patterns together
[222]
one two three one two three
[226]
[Music]
[234]
perfect now some of you may find that a
[236]
little too fast at this point but don't
[239]
you worry all you gotta do is bust out a
[241]
metronome and play it at save 50 beats
[243]
per minute and see if that works for you
[245]
to help build up your speed and that
[252]
goes for every pattern that we learned
[254]
today you can always pause the video set
[256]
up a metronome and learn it at your own
[258]
speed in fact I would I would recommend
[261]
that and another very important thing to
[264]
keep in mind when sweet picking is
[266]
muting the other strings that you're not
[268]
playing because they're gonna make
[269]
string noise unless we keep this area of
[272]
our palm the area that we would use for
[274]
palm muting we want that to be resting
[276]
on all the strings that were not sweet
[278]
picking on and sometimes I will even use
[280]
this part of my thumb very close to the
[283]
pick to mute a note after I've played it
[288]
because sweet picking is all about the
[292]
cleanliness of each note cuz cleanliness
[294]
is godliness okay sorry
[298]
but for the most part just focus on
[300]
learning these patterns slowly and you
[303]
will naturally learn to mute the strings
[305]
in your own in your own ways now we move
[308]
on to the next position position what
[310]
was that we now move on to that next
[312]
position mm-hmm okay pattern number
[315]
three is gonna be using the same fingers
[317]
again but instead of the pinky we're
[319]
gonna use the third finger this time so
[321]
the first note is 15th on the E
[324]
pull off on the 12th with our first
[326]
finger 14th on the B with our second
[330]
finger then 15th on the G with our third
[334]
finger and then back down down down down
[342]
down if you've ever heard Yngwie
[345]
Malmsteen play guitar you have heard
[347]
this sweeping position
[352]
does it sound familiar and pattern
[354]
number four is the exact same pattern as
[356]
pattern number one so you can see this
[358]
is not as complicated as you originally
[360]
thought remember remember that one let's
[367]
try to a metronome Row one two three one
[371]
two three
[372]
[Music]
[374]
[Applause]
[375]
[Music]
[380]
so pattern number five is where things
[382]
get a little bit tricky we're gonna be
[384]
using all four fingers and there's gonna
[386]
be a bit of a stretch so we have pinkie
[388]
on fret 12 on the e and we're gonna pull
[391]
off onto the seventh fret of the e so
[395]
that'll be a bit tricky at first dreidel
[398]
dreidel dreidel and then with our second
[401]
finger we're gonna do the eighth note on
[403]
the B third finger ninth fret on the G
[407]
and back down k pattern number six we're
[415]
only using two fingers fourth and first
[418]
finger rock on so 10th fret on the E
[421]
pull-off on the seventh with your first
[424]
finger and then you're gonna pick the
[426]
seventh fret of the B and you're gonna
[428]
kind of roll your finger onto that one
[430]
while lifting off slightly from the
[432]
previous note to mute it and then roll
[437]
your finger onto the seventh fret of the
[439]
G
[441]
and then roll all the way back down
[444]
[Music]
[449]
[Music]
[450]
it's like you're doing the worm with
[452]
your finger I know it looks intimidating
[456]
but with experimentation and practice
[459]
you will get it so let's play patterns 5
[461]
& 6 together now 1 2 3 1 2 3
[466]
[Music]
[474]
all right pattern seven we're almost
[476]
done so pattern seven is the exact same
[479]
as pattern number two you remember this
[481]
one only this time it's going to be
[485]
played on the ninth fret pulling off to
[488]
the six on the e second finger seventh
[491]
on the B
[493]
and then six on the G and sweeping back
[496]
down
[500]
and you thought sweet picking was tricky
[503]
and the final pattern is the trickiest
[507]
pattern yet because we got a long
[509]
stretch and we're gonna be using the
[510]
finger rolling technique again using the
[513]
second finger this time sorry so we got
[516]
14 on the e pull off on the 9th of the e
[519]
and then with our second finger we're
[522]
gonna play 11 on the B and the next note
[527]
is the 11th on the G so we're gonna use
[529]
the rolling technique again but this
[531]
time using our second finger and then
[534]
back down and then you can end with a
[540]
nice upstroke on the 12th fret of the b
[544]
[Music]
[549]
so let's put pattern 7-8 together see
[552]
how they sound and then that will be a
[554]
jam one two three one two three
[559]
[Music]
[568]
you don't I mean man so what do you say
[571]
we run through this whole thing at 25%
[573]
speed we'll piece all the patterns
[575]
together now
[577]
[Music]
[590]
[Music]
[611]
there it is there it is uh uh okay so
[614]
now I'm gonna play along with my tab on
[616]
musician at full speed we'll see how
[619]
good I can do
[622]
[Music]
[631]
not too shabby now once you guys are
[634]
comfortable with this song I may have to
[636]
do a part to teaching some more advanced
[639]
sweet picking techniques but that one is
[641]
for a different day first thing is first
[643]
and remember follow my link in the
[646]
description to start a free trial with
[648]
use ition and then you can play along
[650]
with my sweet picking tab and you can
[653]
speed it up and slow it down as you see
[655]
fit I really hope you'll work at it and
[657]
be able to play it it will make me so
[659]
happy to see some of you playing this so
[661]
thanks to use ition and thanks to you
[663]
for watching have fun sweeping you guys
[665]
and i'll see you in the next video
[667]
sweepy mix we persons
[687]
you
