If your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch freezes
[4]
on the Apple logo during startup, here's what to do.
[8]
We'll show you how to force restart your device first,
[11]
and then if you still need help, how to enter recovery mode.
[14]
Before you start,
[16]
make sure you have access to a Mac or Windows computer
[19]
and a compatible cable.
[21]
If you don't have a computer,
[22]
you can borrow one from a friend.
[24]
Your device will need to be turned on,
[26]
and you should also charge it for up to an hour beforehand.
[30]
First, we'll try force restarting.
[33]
This process won't erase the content on your device.
[37]
If you have an iPhone X or later,
[39]
a 2nd generation iPhone SE, an iPhone 8,
[43]
or an iPhone 8 Plus,
[45]
press and quickly release the volume up button.
[48]
Then press and quickly release the volume down button.
[51]
Then press and hold the side button
[53]
until your iPhone restarts.
[55]
Your screen should go black and then the Apple logo will appear.
[61]
On an iPad with Face ID,
[63]
press and quickly release the volume up button.
[66]
Then press and quickly release the volume down button.
[70]
Then press and hold the top button until your iPad restarts.
[74]
Your screen should go black,
[75]
and then the Apple logo will appear.
[79]
If you have an iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus,
[83]
or a 7th generation iPod touch,
[86]
press and hold both the top or side button,
[88]
and the volume down button until your device restarts.
[92]
Your screen should go black,
[93]
and then the Apple logo will appear.
[97]
If you have an iPad with a Home button, iPhone 6s or earlier,
[101]
or a 6th generation iPod touch or earlier,
[105]
press and hold both the Home button
[107]
and the top or side button until your device restarts.
[110]
Your screen should go black,
[112]
and then the Apple logo will appear.
[115]
If your device is still frozen,
[117]
here's how to enter recovery mode.
[120]
First, connect your device to a computer.
[123]
If you're using macOS Catalina or later, open the Finder.
[127]
If you're using macOS Mojave or earlier,
[130]
or you're on a Windows computer,
[132]
you'll use the latest version of iTunes.
[135]
Keeping your device connected,
[137]
follow these steps to enter recovery mode.
[141]

[151]

the latest version of iOS or iPadOS on your device.
[229]
Just follow the prompts
[230]
and be sure not to disconnect your device
[232]
while you see the Apple logo and progress bar on the screen.
[236]
If the update fails, you'll be prompted to restore your device.
[240]
It will restore to factory settings,
[242]
and you will need a backup to recover any data.
[245]
If the download takes longer than 15 minutes,
[247]
your device will exit recovery mode.
[249]
To reenter recovery mode,
[252]
you'll need to repeat the button presses
[254]
described in the previous section.
[256]
After the update is completed, your device should restart,
