Chief Justice Must Enforce A Code Of Ethics For Supreme Court - YouTube
Channel: MSNBC
[0]
walter isaacson i want to i want to talk
[2]
to you about um what's going on in
[5]
washington d.c bob woodward and bob
[7]
costa's extraordinary uh
[10]
story on the front page of the
[12]
washington post this morning but before
[13]
i do that
[15]
let's talk china for a minute um and
[18]
let's let's uh let's do some dialect
[21]
dialectical thinking here uh two things
[24]
can be true at one time uh china uh can
[27]
be
[27]
uh an extraordinarily dangerous power at
[30]
the same time we will be sharing the
[32]
world stage with them uh and we need to
[35]
have a bipartisan approach
[37]
do we not that rewards china uh when uh
[41]
they are helpful uh and that that
[46]
actually is is tough on china when
[48]
they're not
[49]
how how do we get that accomplished in
[51]
washington dc in this current climate
[54]
you're right it would be a blunder of
[56]
historic proportions i think if we if
[58]
what happens now is we drive china into
[61]
the arms of russia again for 50 years
[64]
ever since nixon went to china exactly
[66]
50 years ago it's been part of our
[68]
foreign policy that we balance them off
[71]
against each other one of the strange
[73]
and depressing things i hear from people
[76]
in washington in the administration and
[78]
close to it is that they have to remain
[80]
very tough on china because they're
[82]
afraid of republicans who are extremely
[85]
anti-china that wing of the republican
[88]
party making this a partisan issue we're
[91]
very bad at doing balances in other
[93]
words we have both economic cooperation
[96]
we have to do with china we have needs
[98]
of working with china we also are
[100]
competing with china most of that
[102]
competition is economic until we really
[105]
have to get our act together and have a
[107]
bipartisan approach to china
[110]
and as i bring it up all the time we
[112]
obviously we were allies with one of the
[115]
most evil men of the 20th century joseph
[117]
stalin he killed 30 40 million of his
[120]
own uh people uh and and as as far as
[123]
china goes richard nixon the most ardent
[125]
anti-communist of his time
[128]
did a deal with with chairman mao
[130]
perhaps the only human being
[132]
that killed more of his own people than
[135]
joseph stalin but he
[137]
but nixon made the deal
[139]
as you said
[141]
as a counterbalance to the soviet union
[144]
and their expansionism um
[147]
i i i wonder how do we get there from
[150]
here how how you know because
[152]
there has to be a realism if if we're on
[155]
the verge of what putin is suggesting it
[157]
was world war iii we not only have to
[159]
deal with china
[161]
we've got to deal with saudi arabia
[164]
we have to deal with other people who
[166]
have been bad actors and
[169]
russia's threat
[171]
absolutely sanctions are not going to
[173]
work if china decides to violate them or
[176]
china decides it's going to continue to
[178]
trade with russia already there's a lot
[180]
of trade and energy with russia if they
[182]
do it with the financial system
[185]
that's really bad so the question is how
[188]
do you make it so that the u.s has
[190]
enough leverage economically and to me
[193]
that means we have to be good and grow
[195]
our economy but we also have to do
[198]
things like biden is starting to do
[199]
which is start exporting liquefied
[202]
natural gas and this the larger issue
[205]
here is that we've been through 50 years
[207]
of pure globalization where every supply
[209]
chain every outsourcing of manufacturing
[212]
has been done on a global basis
[215]
we are now reliant for microchips on
[218]
china and taiwan we're reliant uh for so
[222]
many things whether it be nickel or
[223]
cobalt aluminum the things we need
[227]
we're going to have to bring things back
[229]
to the united states
[231]
because i don't think in this dangerous
[233]
world where we're trying to compete with
[235]
china economically balance russia
[237]
militarily we can have europe be totally
[240]
dependent on russian gas and us
[242]
dependent on exports from china
[245]
and walter somebody that grew up as a
[248]
newspaper man and knows a breaking story
[252]
a massive breaking story when you see
[254]
one you got to say
[256]
gina and i were talking last night and
[258]
it was just it's just one of those
[260]
moments that stopped washington
[262]
with a like you said a gigantic wow i'll
[265]
tell you gene why don't you why don't
[267]
you ask walter
[269]
the next question uh so much so much to
[272]
dig into here from uh your paper where
[275]
did you well yeah walter um i guess the
[278]
obvious question um the heart of the
[280]
question is you have jenny thomas who we
[282]
see from these texas completely off the
[285]
rails
[286]
we have justice thomas
[288]
who uh was the the lone
[291]
dissenter in the decision that the
[294]
committee could in fact get these
[296]
materials uh turned over from the
[298]
national archives um how how do we deal
[302]
with that nexus how do we deal with
[304]
those questions that this raises about a
[307]
sitting supreme court justice
[310]
well i'm going to focus on one thing
[311]
which is chief justice robert the man of
[314]
great integrity the person who cares
[316]
very much about the integrity of the
[318]
court especially at a time when
[321]
everybody considers the court to be
[322]
totally partisan now this is not just a
[325]
case of the court being partisan this is
[327]
a case of some totally unhinged person
[331]
who's married to a supreme court justice
[334]
making texts and then her husband on the
[336]
supreme court voting not to allow those
[339]
things to become public even though all
[341]
of the other justices democratic and
[343]
republican-leaning justices did so so i
[346]
think what mr
[347]
what the chief justice roberts has to do
[350]
is figure out a way since there is no
[352]
code of conduct there's no code of
[354]
ethics for the supreme court and this is
[356]
not something congress can do we have
[358]
separation of power
[360]
so the chief justice has to figure out
[362]
how to have
[364]
some operating procedures and standards
[368]
not just a list or a code of ethics but
[370]
a way that certain justices can come
[374]
together and enforce a code of ethics on
[378]
their other brethren and sisters on the
[380]
court
[381]
this is new territory for sure this
[384]
really is
