What is Tesla Not Telling us About Plaid Delivery Event? - YouTube

[1]
welcome to the tesla economist
[4]
please hit the thumbs up and don't
[5]
forget to subscribe
[9]
tesla had their plant delivery event the
[12]
delivery of the world's quickest ever
[13]
production car
[14]
and first to ever break the two second
[16]
zero to 60 time
[18]
only it happens to be a large family
[20]
sedan rather than a lightweight hyper
[22]
car
[23]
okay i'm sure you all saw the event and
[24]
know the details so i just wanted to go
[27]
over it
[27]
and see if we could read between the
[28]
lines and see what other information
[31]
we might be able to infer from what
[32]
we've been told
[34]
elon says that the car has an all-new
[36]
battery pack
[37]
in my opinion this was potentially the
[39]
most important part of the event
[41]
the new model s uses a new battery pack
[44]
why would tesla move over to a new
[45]
battery pack
[46]
it doesn't seem to look too much like
[48]
the structural pack we saw on battery
[50]
day
[50]
but that structural pack was designed to
[52]
fit in with the model of front and rear
[53]
castings
[54]
for the model y so if this is a
[56]
structural battery pack perhaps it would
[58]
have to be designed more so around the
[59]
previous battery pack of the model s
[61]
to fit in with the current design i mean
[64]
if it was structural then we probably
[65]
would have been told
[66]
i would have thought the question is
[68]
then why are they using a new battery
[70]
pack
[71]
is there a chance that they have 4680
[73]
batteries inside
[74]
is it too much information to give away
[76]
too soon
[78]
it would have been one of the biggest
[79]
deals i can think of for the company
[82]
tesla have created a new electric motor
[83]
for the model s elon says you can pick
[86]
this motor up with your hands
[87]
so i would guess it weighs under 40
[89]
pounds i think the old motors weighed
[91]
about 70 pounds
[93]
so these new ones are around half the
[94]
weight given the new model s weighs less
[97]
than the older version
[99]
therefore would the lighter motor
[100]
account for some of the weight saving
[103]
except that of course the plaid uses
[104]
three motors instead of two
[106]
so despite them being significantly
[108]
lighter if you're using 50
[110]
more then the weight saving is not
[111]
substantial perhaps only about 40 pounds
[114]
total
[115]
i mean these electric motors are amazing
[117]
they go up to 20 000 rpm which is crazy
[120]
and just another way that tesla dominate
[122]
you see tesla managed to beat every
[124]
other manufacturer on range and
[125]
performance
[126]
partly because tesla has better
[128]
batteries but even when the competitors
[130]
use the same batteries
[132]
tesla still beat them with their other
[133]
technology such as their electric motors
[136]
and this electric motor appears to be
[138]
another leap ahead in technology for the
[140]
company
[141]
i'm not sure if they'll be used in other
[142]
tesla models or if they're just for high
[144]
performance versions
[146]
either way it goes to show how tessa are
[147]
continually innovating
[149]
and still finding ways to significantly
[151]
reduce weight even still these days
[154]
which just make it that much harder
[155]
again for those playing catch-up
[158]
but the issue is you can't catch up to
[160]
something that's moving faster than you
[162]
it simply is not physically possible yet
[165]
so many people fail to realize this
[167]
why do people think that other
[168]
businesses with much less experience and
[170]
resources
[171]
seem to think that it's possible for
[173]
them to catch up with tesla
[175]
this is just one more reason to
[176]
demonstrate how that's not going to
[178]
happen
[179]
we then hear that the model s now has
[181]
the lowest drag coefficient out of any
[183]
car
[183]
ever made but actually that's not true
[186]
is it
[187]
mercedes announced that their eqs
[188]
actually has the world's best drag
[190]
coefficient
[191]
mercedes eqs has a drag coefficient of
[193]
0.20
[195]
and the tesla model s comes in at .208
[198]
so pretty much the same as mercedes
[201]
except the mercedes is just a tiny bit
[203]
better
[204]
except elon clears that up for us by
[206]
explaining about wheels and motion
[209]
cars have a different drag coefficient
[210]
when the wheels are moving
[212]
now when cars are driving in my
[214]
experience the wheels also tend to move
[217]
therefore we are to infer that the most
[219]
important drag coefficient measurement
[221]
would also include the wheels in motion
[224]
which leads us to assume that elon means
[226]
that the mercedes jack coefficient
[228]
is not as low as the model s is when it
[230]
has wheels in motion
[232]
you might say this is a somewhat
[234]
cherry-picked arbitrary point
[236]
but it's not it's the one that matters
[239]
as in which car
[240]
everything else being equal will get the
[242]
most range
[243]
solely based on drag coefficient the
[246]
answer would be the model s
[248]
it doesn't matter how you explain or
[249]
compare the statistics the one that gets
[251]
the most range
[252]
has the best drag coefficient the rest
[254]
is marketing
[256]
therefore tesla are able to get their
[258]
cars the lightest
[259]
and get them to drive most efficient
[261]
compared to other automakers
[263]
and then elon announces the new heat
[265]
pump and radiator in the plaid
[267]
now what's so important about this aside
[269]
from the extra range in colder climates
[271]
is that now you can continually do drag
[273]
races and you will not lose any
[275]
performance
[276]
before after a while the 0-60 time would
[278]
start to dwindle
[280]
unlike the porsche tycan that could
[281]
continually bring its a-game to
[283]
every drag race and that was the feature
[286]
porsche
[286]
were most proud of against the tesla
[289]
yeah well porsche no longer have that
[291]
feature unique to themselves
[293]
oh yeah not to mention how much faster
[294]
the plate is now
[296]
than every single porsche ever so the
[298]
two features that the competition were
[300]
proud to be tesla on
[301]
the mercedes where it's drag coefficient
[303]
and porsche of its drag racing
[305]
are now no longer something for the
[307]
competition to brag about
[309]
i guess now all tests are needed some
[310]
swanky orange stitching
[312]
and then the audi eachon is out of ideas
[314]
to market themselves against tesla 2.
[317]
but none of them can come close to
[318]
tesla's safety as elon points out
[321]
tessa is faster than any porsche and
[323]
safer than any volvo
[325]
hey that sounds like something i said
[327]
last week how tessa is safer than any
[329]
volvo
[330]
and faster than any ferrari elon are you
[332]
listening to me too
[334]
elon says something that is kind of cool
[336]
all input is error
[338]
in other words anything you have to make
[340]
the car do is an
[341]
error the car should intuitively know
[344]
what to do
[345]
this is a great first principle's way of
[347]
looking at car features and
[348]
functionality
[349]
rather than perhaps mercedes looking at
[351]
the car and thinking
[352]
how can we improve the steering for the
[354]
driver tesla look at it as
[356]
how can we reduce the level of steering
[358]
required for the driver or remove it
[360]
completely
[361]
this was brought up explaining how there
[363]
are no more steering stalks
[365]
and the car will know whether you want
[366]
to go forwards or reverse
[369]
of course the state-of-the-art
[370]
infotainment available in the model s is
[371]
second to none
[373]
but if cars become more used in
[375]
autopilot
[376]
then in-car entertainment will become
[378]
important of course tessa are so far
[380]
ahead in this vision
[381]
they're already preparing the cars for
[383]
great entertainment
[384]
really no other car comes remotely close
[387]
looking at the power curve though it
[389]
just goes to show truly how impressive
[391]
the plaid is
[392]
over the previous versions of model s
[394]
personally i think this is a really big
[396]
deal
[397]
not the fact that it has so much power
[399]
as impressive as that is
[401]
but the fact it has so much more power
[403]
than the 2019 performance
[405]
we're talking a step change here how did
[407]
tesla achieve that
[409]
seriously this is a lot more power yet
[411]
we have a weight difference of 175
[413]
less pounds from last year's model s
[415]
performance
[416]
some of this weight can be attributed to
[418]
the lighter motors but remember not much
[420]
as the plant has three motors instead of
[422]
two a lot of people
[424]
thought they might be using giga presses
[426]
and the weight saving could be
[428]
attributed to die-cast moulds
[430]
but that doesn't appear to be the case
[433]
therefore
[433]
we can only assume the other major place
[435]
of where weight saving has occurred
[437]
is in this new battery pack the plant
[440]
battery pack is able to create 1024
[442]
horsepower
[443]
compared to 778 horsepower from the
[445]
performance
[447]
about 250 more horsepower or over 30
[450]
percent more horsepower
[452]
now just imagine if a new ferrari is
[454]
launched and they announced it has
[456]
30 percent more horsepower than last
[458]
year's version
[459]
this is an incredible amount of power to
[461]
jump from last year's version
[463]
whilst the plant batteries only generate
[465]
slightly more range than the performance
[467]
the fact they're able to get to 60 under
[470]
two seconds is a big deal
[471]
compared to the 2.3 seconds from the
[473]
performance model yet with a lighter
[475]
weight battery
[477]
now the p100d battery pack weighed
[479]
around 1377 pounds
[481]
if we have a weight saving of perhaps 50
[483]
pounds from the new motor and other
[485]
enhancements
[486]
then that would leave a weight saving of
[488]
around 125 pounds in the batteries
[490]
almost about 10 percent so we have 1
[494]
377 pounds generating 778 horsepower
[497]
ie 0.65 horsepower per pound of battery
[501]
for the p100d
[503]
then we have around 1252 pounds
[505]
generating 1024 horsepower
[508]
which comes in at 0.82 horsepower per
[510]
pound for the plaid
[512]
that is 26 more power from the batteries
[515]
per pound
[517]
granted the new motors might also help
[518]
with efficiency along with other items
[520]
but still there is no denying that it
[523]
looks like we've had some major changes
[524]
at the battery level
[526]
i don't think tesla could have reached
[528]
this level of efficiency with the 18650
[530]
batteries
[531]
it's just too big an improvement elon
[534]
was very coy about the battery pack and
[536]
didn't go into any details on it
[538]
he quickly moved on to the new motors
[540]
and went into more details about those
[542]
in other words he has deliberately
[544]
missed talking about the batteries
[547]
is it possible they have gone with the
[548]
4680 form is elon avoiding mentioning it
[551]
in order to sandbag the company so
[553]
competitors don't realize just how far
[555]
they got with the 4680 batteries or a
[558]
tesla trying to avoid mentioning 4680s
[561]
because they're behind on their
[562]
deadlines if it was the latter
[564]
then would it matter everyone was pretty
[567]
much expecting the 18650 batteries
[568]
anyway
[569]
it wouldn't have been a massive
[570]
disappointment if they had said they'd
[572]
used 18650s
[575]
and if they had been using 18650 then
[577]
they might have liked to tell us
[578]
how they're getting so much more
[580]
performance than previously but they
[582]
didn't
[583]
it doesn't stop there either the weight
[585]
difference is 322 pounds
[587]
from the previous long version to the
[590]
new long-range version
[591]
and the new version has slightly longer
[593]
range but 0-60 time
[596]
0.6 seconds faster so previous
[599]
long-range version
[601]
if the battery weighs 377 pounds
[605]
we now have a difference of perhaps 280
[607]
pounds after the weight saving of the
[609]
motor
[610]
assuming that the long-range version
[611]
also uses these new motors and they're
[613]
not exclusive to plaid
[615]
anyway that's a battery weight saving of
[617]
20
[619]
compare from 517 horsepower to 670
[621]
horsepower
[623]
or we have 0.38 horsepower per pound of
[626]
battery for the old version
[628]
compared to 0.61 horsepower per pound of
[631]
battery
[631]
of the new long range that is 60 percent
[634]
more power per pound of battery which is
[637]
insane
[638]
it's probably not as noticeable for the
[640]
plaid version and performance as they
[642]
are so highly tuned for performance as
[644]
it was
[644]
but there is no hiding it from the long
[646]
range models
[648]
is it possible tesla have moved the
[649]
model s over to the 2170 form factor
[652]
if the new model s long range battery
[654]
pack weighs around 100 pounds
[656]
then that's not far off the model 3
[658]
performance battery pack weighing at
[660]
1060 pounds
[662]
but the model 3 performance only
[663]
generates 470 horsepower
[666]
or 0.44 horsepower per pound of battery
[669]
the model s annihilates that by nearly
[671]
50 percent
[673]
we're also comparing 82 kilowatt hour
[675]
battery from the model 3
[677]
within a 100 kilowatt hour battery from
[679]
the model s
[680]
weighing about the same weight in other
[682]
words 0.077
[684]
kilowatt hours per pound of battery for
[686]
the model 3
[688]
compared to 0.091 kilowatts per pound of
[691]
battery
[692]
for the new model less long range in
[695]
other words 18
[696]
more output per weight therefore i'm not
[699]
ruling out the fact tests that are using
[701]
the 4680
[702]
batteries yet elon said they will be at
[704]
1 000 units a week by next quarter
[707]
implying a run rate of approximately 500
[709]
megawatt hours a month
[711]
or six gigawatt hours a year which
[713]
should be enough for the kato road
[715]
battery factory to more than cover
[717]
even if tesla double that level with the
[719]
model x again
[720]
so there is still a chance that tesla
[722]
are using 4680s
[724]
if it's not 4680s then there must have
[726]
been some sort of major battery
[728]
improvement
[729]
except it feels like too big an
[730]
improvement other than it being 46 eddy
[732]
batteries
[734]
let me know how you think tesla has
[735]
reduced so much weight in the comments
[736]
below
[737]
and what chance you think is the 4680
[739]
batteries thanks for listening
