the universe appears to be 13.8 billion years old
[6]
earth is like 4.5 billion years old in another聽
half billion years or so the sun will expand聽聽
[15]
and probably evaporate the oceans and make life聽
impossible on earth which means that if it had聽聽
[21]
taken consciousness 10 percent longer to evolve it聽
would never evolved at all it's attempting longer
[30]
and i wonder i wonder how many dead one planet聽
civilizations there are out there in the cosmos聽聽
[37]
that never made it to the other聽
planet and ultimately extinguish聽聽
[40]
themselves or were destroyed by聽
external factors probably a few
[50]
look again at that dot that's here that's home聽
that's us on it everyone you love everyone聽聽
[58]
you know everyone you've ever heard of every聽
human being who ever was lived out their lives聽聽
[65]
the aggregate of our joy and suffering thousands聽
of confident religions ideologies and economic聽聽
[70]
doctrines every hunter and forager every hero and聽
coward every creator and destroyer of civilization聽聽
[76]
every king and peasant every young couple in聽
love every mother and father hopeful child聽聽
[83]
inventor and explorer every teacher of聽
morals every corrupt politician every聽聽
[91]
superstar every supreme leader every saint and聽
sinner in the history of our species live there聽聽
[98]
on a mode of dust suspended in a sunbeam our聽
planet is a lonely speck in the great enveloping聽聽
[105]
cosmic dark in our obscurity in all this vastness聽
there is no hint that help will come from聽聽
[112]
elsewhere to save us from ourselves the earth is聽
the only world known so far to harbor life there聽聽
[117]
is nowhere else at least in the near future to聽
which our species could migrate this is not true
[125]
they're really two fundamental paths history is聽
going to bifurcate along two directions one one聽聽
[130]
one path is we stay on earth forever um and then聽
there will be some eventual extinction event um聽聽
[136]
i don't have an immediate doomsday prophecy but聽
there's it's eventually history suggests there聽聽
[142]
will be some some juicy event the alternative聽
is to become a space spring civilization and a聽聽
[148]
multi-planet species which i hope you would agree聽
that is the right way to go we should be concerned聽聽
[154]
about demographic implosion so if you look at聽
countries like japan most of europe china and you聽聽
[163]
look at the birth rates and a lot of those places聽
is only at about half of the sustaining rates when聽聽
[168]
you have an inverted demographic pyramid so聽
if you like look at the department you've got聽聽
[172]
aged creation 60 year olds 50 year olds 40 year聽
olds 20 year olds you know sort of a demographic聽聽
[177]
pyramid right um and in some countries it's sort聽
of it's like an upside down permit so it'll sort聽聽
[181]
of fall over so it will not will not stand what聽
we'll actually have in those countries is a very聽聽
[186]
high dependency ratio where the number of people聽
who are retired is is very high relative to the聽聽
[191]
number of people who are net producers and so you聽
cannot the the social safety net will not hold聽聽
[196]
we didn't evolve for this because we sort of聽
evolved to just always procreate and it wasn't聽聽
[201]
birth control or anything right just like how聽
about babies it's like puff of course and like聽聽
[204]
hopefully some of them was five that would be that聽
was like all of you in history until very recently聽聽
[209]
and now it's uh you know you've got cases like聽
japan where adult diapers outsell baby diapers聽聽
[216]
europe's in a similar situation china is headed聽
the same way because you know they've had the聽聽
[219]
one child policy and then even though they've聽
relieved the one child policy the social norm聽聽
[224]
has become to have an average of one kid聽
so even when they relieved that requirement聽聽
[229]
it didn't change you could you can imagine聽
like people was gonna say well what about聽聽
[233]
immigration it's like okay look there's聽
one and a half billion people in china聽聽
[237]
where is china going to get 700 million new聽
people okay that's like three indonesians聽聽
[243]
it's like this doesn't work the full gravity聽
of this will it is not well understood but聽聽
[249]
will become severe sphere issue in the next few聽
decades so civilization here on earth could end聽聽
[256]
with a bang or a whimper um but it could also聽
be like a whole series of things like so like聽聽
[261]
what killed the dinosaurs well it wasn't just one聽
thing you know it was like a whole bunch of things聽聽
[266]
happened in a row if they could have taken any one聽
of those things they had like three things happen聽聽
[271]
and no dinosaurs if the species is going聽
to survive we kind of have to escape it's聽聽
[276]
mostly about the species i mean there's been some聽
real doozies of like massive meteors and super聽聽
[283]
volcanoes and the continents moved all over the聽
place and earth's been a snowball and super hot
[291]
if you read like the geological history of聽
earth it's like very long and complicated聽聽
[297]
um so and then there have been so many extinction聽
events not like just a few galactic time scale聽聽
[304]
even with sub-light travel you could absolutely聽
colonize the whole galaxy even some of the聽聽
[310]
neighboring galaxies could you colonize the galaxy聽
in a million years absolutely the entire galaxy聽聽
[317]
why do we need to build a city on mars with聽
a million people on it yeah i think it's聽聽
[324]
important to have um a future that is inspiring聽
and appealing i mean i just think that they're聽聽
[332]
like there have been reasons that you get聽
up in the morning and you want to live聽聽
[336]
like why do you want to live what what's the聽
point what what inspires you what what do you聽聽
[340]
love about the future and if we're not聽
out there if the future does not include聽聽
[344]
being out there among the stars uh and聽
being a multi-planet species i find that聽聽
[350]
it's incredibly depressing if that's聽
not the future that we're going to have聽聽
[354]
if you look at the progress in space in 1969聽
we were able to send somebody to the moon聽聽
[361]
1969 um then we had the space shuttle the space聽
shuttle could only take people to low earth orbit聽聽
[370]
then the space shuttle retired and the聽
united states could take no one to orbit聽聽
[375]
but so that's the trend is like down to聽
nothing this is not if you have a mistake and聽聽
[382]
when they think that technology just automatically聽
improves it does not automatically improve聽聽
[387]
it it only improves if a lot of people work聽
very hard to make it better and actually it聽聽
[392]
will i think it by itself degrade actually you聽
look at great civilizations like ancient egypt聽聽
[399]
and they're able to make the pyramids and they聽
forgot how to do that and the romans they built聽聽
[404]
these incredible aqueducts they forgot how to聽
do it do you think there is a meaning to life
[414]
well i think arguably the meaning of life聽
is to understand the nature of the universe聽聽
[419]
and figure out what the meaning of life is so聽聽
[424]
uh like i said i think we don't quite聽
know the right questions to ask and if we聽聽
[430]
but if we learn more about the universe if we聽
expand the scope and scale of consciousness聽聽
[434]
then we are better able to ask the questions聽
about the answer that is the invoice i think the聽聽
[442]
being a multi-planet species and being聽
out there among the stars is important for聽聽
[447]
the long-term survival of humanity and uh that's聽
one reason kind of like life insurance for life聽聽
[454]
collectively life as we know it but then the part聽
that i find personally most motivating is that聽聽
[463]
it creates a sense of adventure and it聽
makes people excited about the future聽聽
[469]
um and if you consider two futures one聽
where uh we are forever confined to earth聽聽
[474]
until eventually something terrible happens聽
or another future where we are out there聽聽
[481]
on many planets maybe even going beyond the聽
solar system i think that second version is聽聽
[487]
incredibly exciting and inspiring and there聽
need to be reasons to get up in the morning聽聽
[493]
you know life can't just be about solving problems聽
otherwise what's the point the value of beauty and聽聽
[498]
inspiration is very much underrated no question聽
um but i want to be clear i like i'm not trying聽聽
[504]
to be anyone's savior uh that is not the i'm just聽
trying to think about the future and not be sad
