Get Your Finances in Order in 2021 - YouTube
Channel: You Need A Budget (YNAB)
[0]
happy new year welcome back to the
[1]
channel i'm ashley
[3]
this is mindful money and i know in my
[6]
brain
[6]
that there is nothing magical about
[8]
january 1st
[9]
but i still love the start of a fresh
[12]
year so over the past couple days i've
[14]
been doing a little bit of reflecting
[15]
but i've mostly been
[17]
thinking about myself this time next
[20]
year and how i want to be feeling
[22]
like i'm proud of myself for
[24]
accomplishing savings goals i'm feeling
[26]
stronger physically
[27]
also stronger in my relationships and
[29]
generally
[30]
just a little bit calmer and more
[32]
organized and as i'm going through
[34]
those feelings i want i think to myself
[37]
what would a person who feels that way
[39]
be doing today what goals would they be
[41]
setting what habits would they
[43]
be building and if you watched way back
[46]
when which i cannot believe
[48]
that video was filmed this year that's
[49]
crazy to me but the habits for 2020
[52]
video
[52]
i think i had just started reading
[54]
atomic habits and that
[56]
is still my favorite book i read all
[58]
year this is one of my favorite quotes
[59]
from the book
[60]
decide the type of person you want to be
[63]
prove it to yourself
[64]
with small wins so if you clicked on
[66]
this video because you want
[67]
2021 to be the year you get your
[70]
finances in order
[71]
i wanted to give you a few things you
[73]
can start doing right now to make that
[75]
happen
[76]
the first thing is so simple yet so
[78]
powerful and that is to track
[80]
and categorize all of your spending you
[82]
can use pen and paper if that's your
[84]
thing
[84]
you could use the notes app on your
[86]
phone or an excel spreadsheet
[88]
or an app like you need a budget when i
[90]
was first getting my finances in order i
[93]
decided to use you need a budget
[95]
but i was not a hundred percent sold yet
[97]
i had tried different budgeting programs
[99]
and apps in the past
[101]
and they never stuck i think it was one
[103]
of those
[104]
new year new me i'm gonna start using
[106]
this and tomorrow
[107]
i'm gonna wake up and be magically a new
[109]
person who hardly spends any money
[111]
that wouldn't happen i would get
[113]
frustrated with myself and i would quit
[115]
but here's the thing going back to that
[117]
quote from james clear
[118]
i think we need to start with small wins
[121]
tracking
[122]
is easy but it's also a new habit you're
[124]
having to add to your life so build that
[127]
in first and the simple act of writing
[129]
down or
[130]
entering your spending will make you
[132]
more connected with your money
[134]
and you can't help but be more mindful
[136]
of your spending
[137]
and once you've been doing that for a
[138]
while you're going to have a lot of
[140]
great information
[141]
let's say i run out today go to target
[143]
i'll put that into you need a budget
[145]
and i'll categorize that as household
[147]
goods so because i have all these
[149]
categories when i'm looking back over my
[151]
spending
[152]
it's very easy to see where my money is
[154]
going
[155]
and as you're looking back don't let
[156]
this become a judgment thing
[158]
actually be a little bit more curious
[160]
what can i learn about myself
[162]
from my spending you might see some
[165]
areas i have a hobby that i love
[167]
and i'm not really spending any money on
[169]
it so is there something i could cut out
[171]
that i'm not getting a lot of enjoyment
[173]
from maybe that's
[173]
cable cut that out and you're going to
[175]
have more money to put into your hobby
[177]
and that's where we start to align our
[180]
spending with our priorities
[181]
if you're sitting there watching
[183]
thinking that sounds good but i'm all in
[184]
and i want to supercharge
[186]
2021 what can i do i would recommend
[189]
a money reset i did one of these for 34
[193]
days starting october 1st with some of
[195]
my teammates from uni to budget
[197]
we had three rules track all of your
[199]
spending only by
[201]
essentials we all had different
[202]
guidelines for that i cut out anything
[204]
frivolous
[205]
video games clothes skin care and we
[208]
didn't eat out
[209]
not a single thing for 34 days it was
[212]
hard it was awesome and we're gonna host
[215]
a second round of that and we've created
[217]
a really great workbook
[219]
and i think the best thing about the
[220]
workbook is that it makes you right at
[222]
the beginning
[223]
choose your why what is your big savings
[226]
goal
[227]
and when i would try to save when i was
[229]
younger
[230]
it felt like i was doing it to be a good
[233]
person like
[233]
responsible people save so i guess i
[235]
should do that too but i didn't get
[237]
serious about saving until i started
[239]
listing
[240]
out all of my goals so this 34 day reset
[243]
you choose
[244]
one big goal and everything you save for
[246]
those 34 days you put toward it
[249]
and it can be a responsible goal or it
[250]
can be a super fun goal
[252]
when i did it back in october i am
[254]
currently saving for
[256]
a car so that was my big goal and i made
[258]
so much progress
[260]
so if you want to join for round two of
[262]
the 34 day reset
[263]
all of that information will be listed
[265]
down below we would love to have you i
[266]
think we're going to have a lot
[268]
of fun i've only talked about money so
[270]
far but something else i think we should
[271]
do in 2021
[273]
is invest in ourselves that could be
[276]
developing our skills
[278]
i recently took ollie abdalls who's one
[280]
of my favorite youtubers
[281]
i took his course about how he creates
[283]
his content
[285]
it was awesome i learned so much i got
[287]
connected to new people who have similar
[289]
interest to me it got me really excited
[291]
about what other courses i could take
[294]
and as a christmas present to myself i
[296]
bought a virtual cooking class so that i
[298]
can
[299]
develop my cooking skill and become more
[301]
confident in the kitchen
[302]
investing in yourself is so interesting
[304]
to me i'd like to do an entire video
[305]
about it
[306]
because i think it can go in lots of
[308]
different ways not just developing a new
[310]
skill
[310]
we could buy back time by outsourcing or
[313]
add
[314]
in time for creativity into our
[316]
calendars or
[317]
spend time up front to make life easier
[319]
for ourselves in the future
[321]
that's one of my goals for 2021 i want
[324]
to create a b-roll
[325]
library so i have all these little clips
[327]
of me doing stuff around the house or
[329]
using the you need a budget app
[331]
and when i need those when i'm sitting
[332]
down to film they are lost in the jungle
[335]
that is my external hard drive
[337]
so i want to spend a few hours to
[339]
organize all that so that when future me
[341]
is editing videos it's a lot easier and
[343]
can save me a lot of time
[345]
if we want to get our finances in order
[347]
in 2021
[348]
we can organize other areas of our life
[351]
sadly i'm not naturally good at money or
[353]
a very organized person
[354]
i live in a little bit of chaos and
[356]
that's something i always am trying to
[358]
work on
[359]
and as i've done that i realize how
[360]
connected money and organization
[363]
is when my fridge and pantry are
[365]
organized i can save money by building
[368]
out
[368]
meal plans based on food i already have
[371]
and i'm not worried about food going bad
[373]
because i know what i have and when i
[375]
need to eat it by
[376]
you could also build organization into
[378]
your budget if you have you need a
[380]
budget you can use
[381]
goals or scheduled transactions to
[383]
remind yourself of when
[385]
bills are due so you're not paying them
[387]
late and incurring any kind of fees
[389]
and i also like to add in organization
[391]
to my calendar
[393]
if there are important dates birthdays
[395]
anniversaries
[396]
add them into my calendar so i'm not
[398]
having to rely on my brain to remember
[400]
things
[401]
and because i'm reminded of them when i
[403]
look through
[404]
my calendar or my planner maybe i can
[406]
even shop early and shop sales
[409]
if part of your money plan for the new
[410]
year is paying off debt
[412]
i would say you have to pick a strategy
[414]
that works for you
[416]
and if you want to know about all the
[417]
different debt pay down strategies
[419]
hannah and ben have filmed an entire
[421]
course it's called how to get out of
[423]
debt
[423]
and stay out it's about an hour long not
[426]
only is it hilarious it's also
[428]
full of good information and they go
[430]
over the different kind of debt
[432]
pay down methods so if you want to watch
[434]
that i'll have a link to that down below
[436]
i've talked about my own money story on
[438]
the channel a few times
[439]
i had a head in the sand approach hated
[442]
thinking about money
[443]
hated talking about money so to become a
[445]
person who loves to talk about it i
[447]
can't believe
[448]
i get to film these videos is amazing
[450]
and that whole transformation
[452]
started with a book so i love the
[454]
thought of adding
[455]
in learning about personal finance to
[457]
your money makeover this year
[459]
the book that started it all for me you
[461]
need a budget the other two
[463]
i recommend and loan out to friends i
[465]
will teach you to be rich by ramit sethi
[467]
and the simple path to wealth by j.l
[469]
collins
[470]
these three are a great place to start
[472]
and i've begun writing out my reading
[474]
list for 2021
[476]
and chris from popcorn finance which is
[478]
one of my favorite personal finance
[480]
podcasts
[481]
shared his recent favorite books and
[483]
there was two by kate flanders the year
[485]
of less
[486]
and adventures in opting out and then
[489]
you need a budget writer rachel
[491]
also recommended psychology of money as
[493]
you're thinking about all this and
[494]
deciding what habits to add to your own
[496]
life
[497]
tracking your spending checking your
[498]
budget consider a gratitude practice
[501]
that makes it sound very big and fancy
[503]
for me it's not it's a simple line in my
[506]
journal i write down one thing i'm
[508]
grateful for every day
[509]
not always faithful with it but when i
[511]
am i'm so much more content
[513]
in other areas in my life and i know a
[516]
lot of us are on long journeys we have a
[517]
long pay down plan or we're saving
[520]
up for something big that's going to
[521]
take us a while to get there
[523]
contentment and gratitude can ground us
[525]
and make us more likely to stay the
[527]
course
[528]
i am grateful for you thank you for
[530]
watching we want all the best for you in
[532]
2021 please consider subscribing
[535]
tons of content coming out and we would
[537]
love to have you be a part of
[539]
the 34 day reset links down below
[550]
