Lesson 7: What is a pip worth in forex? Trade sizes and more ... - YouTube
Channel: Financial Wars
[1]
hey everybody I'm Rob Booker inventor of
[3]
the paperclip that's not actually true
[5]
welcome back to our FX trading 101
[7]
lessons I'm happy to be here thanks to
[9]
our sponsor Forest Park FX pip value
[12]
it's the question on everyone's mind how
[15]
much is a pip worth we talked about it
[17]
earlier we talked about the spreads we
[18]
talked about the Commission's we talked
[19]
about the quotes we talked about buying
[21]
and selling a little bit let's say Nate
[23]
that you made 10 pips is that a lot of
[27]
money is it not a lot of money how much
[31]
money is it if you make 10 pips well it
[34]
all depends there are in the world of
[37]
currency trading 3 different primary
[40]
trade sizes and this applies to 99% of
[43]
all of you that are going to be doing
[45]
trading the first trade size is the
[47]
smallest and it's called a micro lot
[50]
this is what we use when we first start
[53]
trading and it's the smallest trade size
[55]
possible now inside of your trading
[58]
account you might see when you open up
[60]
an order window the word volume this
[63]
refers to your trade size okay so it
[66]
might say volume but it refers to trade
[68]
size and there's a bunch of numbers with
[70]
decimals and I want to break those down
[71]
as I mentioned starting with if I can
[75]
anyway starting with the micro lot so
[79]
this is referred to as a micro lot I
[82]
don't know why they use the word lot but
[85]
it's a lot size or it's just trade size
[87]
lot size micro a lot whatever a micro
[91]
lot represents 1000 units of currency so
[98]
1000 units of currency and it is
[102]
generally shown in your trading account
[106]
as 0.01 as the volume or as the trade
[110]
size so I'm going to use the word volume
[113]
here because most of you are going to
[114]
use Metatrader and that's the word
[116]
you're going to see so that would be the
[118]
volume this is worth 10 cents
[126]
or ten pennies or what's the fraction in
[132]
in pounds fraction of a pound is pence
[136]
ten pence or whatever currency that
[139]
you're dealing with in your country the
[141]
trade size is a micro lot it's the
[143]
smallest one you can probably trade it's
[146]
a thousand units of currency it's a
[148]
trade size of 0.01 or a volume size of
[152]
0.01 Lots and for every pip moved it's
[156]
ten cents so going back to our original
[159]
question if you made 10 pips trading one
[163]
micro lot name if you made 10 pips what
[166]
would that be worth and if you're
[171]
playing along at home let me know if you
[173]
made 10 pips what would that be worth
[175]
and you can shout it at your computer
[176]
screen a dollar so 10 pips great job
[185]
name 10 pips equals $1 or if you're
[190]
trading in the UK one pound or if you're
[193]
trading in a euro denominated account
[195]
one euro or if you're trading in a yen
[197]
account it would be 100 yen if you're
[200]
trading in Australia with Australian
[202]
dollars it would be one Australian
[203]
dollar because you made 10 pips each one
[206]
was worth 10 cents now these numbers are
[208]
these numbers are approximate for most
[212]
currencies this is exactly what it will
[214]
look like if you're trading the Japanese
[216]
yen it might be 7 cents per pip or 8
[220]
cents per pip if you're trading the
[223]
British Pound Australian dollar it might
[225]
be 13 cents a pip or some other number
[228]
close to this number that makes sense
[230]
name so it's close to this number that's
[232]
a general range the next trade size that
[235]
you can trade is a mini and it's 10
[237]
times larger than a micro what's 10
[241]
times larger than a micro Nate so point
[246]
one is the volume excellent that's the
[251]
volume and you would be trading in this
[256]
case
[258]
10,000 units of currency instead of
[265]
1,000 so if every micro lot was worth 10
[269]
cents what's every mini lot worth
[271]
approximately one dollar one Australian
[275]
dollar 1 pound 1 euro 100 yen and so
[279]
forth on down the line depending on
[281]
where your account was initiated one
[283]
dollar per pip now this is a general
[287]
number if it's if you're trading the US
[289]
dollar Japanese yen in the United States
[291]
it might be worth 79 cents
[293]
might be worth 80 cents if you're
[295]
trading the British Pound Australian
[296]
dollar it might be worth a dollar 20 or
[299]
something along those lines it's it's
[301]
gonna change but it's gonna be in this
[302]
range so if you make 10 pips on a mini
[306]
lot Nate how much money have you made 10
[313]
pips on a mini lot would be it would be
[323]
$10 because 1 pip is worth $1 and 10 of
[329]
them would be worth $10 now what if you
[332]
made 10 pips but you traded two mini
[336]
Lots $20 how many units of currency
[343]
would have mini lot be worth 20,000
[348]
units of currency
[349]
what would the volume number look like
[352]
point to and what would the dollar value
[355]
per pip be 2 dollars if you traded what
[360]
have you traded 5 mini lots play along
[363]
with me at home what's your value per
[365]
pip on 5 mini lots $5.00 there you go
[370]
the mini lot is one of the most commonly
[372]
traded units when I started trading in
[374]
the year 2000 you couldn't trade a micro
[377]
or a mini you had to trade what is
[379]
called a standard standard lot was the
[384]
original largest trade size well it was
[388]
the original trade size everything was
[389]
quoted in standard
[391]
if a standard lot is ten times larger
[394]
than a mini lot ten times larger than a
[400]
mini lot what's a standard lot in units
[402]
of currency 100,000 units of currency
[409]
okay so you're controlling the euro
[412]
dollar for example if you trade one
[414]
standard lot you're controlling a
[415]
hundred thousand dollars worth of euro
[417]
US dollar it sounds crazy it sounds big
[420]
it's not really that big stand a lot is
[423]
a hundred thousand units of currency and
[425]
how would you quote that with volume it
[430]
would be a 1 a 1.0 volume or trade size
[436]
1 lot that was what they used to call it
[439]
they didn't have to call it a standard
[440]
lot because it was just the only one
[442]
available and what's the value per pip
[445]
ten dollars per pip so if you made 10
[449]
pips with a standard lot how much money
[452]
have you made you've made $100 now we're
[458]
going to talk later on about how much
[460]
money you need in your trading account
[461]
to trade these sizes but now you have a
[463]
good idea of what each of these is worth
[466]
so we're gonna do a little quiz here and
[467]
you can play along at home using the
[469]
stuff that you learned inside of this
[470]
lesson if ma if you made seven pips
[474]
with no if you made 10 pips with seven
[478]
mini Lots how much money have you made
[483]
you know you've made seven dollars I got
[491]
to write slower here or else the board
[492]
really dislikes me if you have made 10
[496]
pips on 5 micro Lots how much money have
[504]
you made 50 cents or 50 pence or
[509]
whatever this is great if you have made
[514]
10 pips with 20 standard Lots
[522]
how much money have you made - so you've
[525]
made twenty times ten which would be 20
[540]
standard Lots
[542]
10 pips $200 okay so now you know about
[548]
trade sizes and pip values remember
[551]
these numbers are approximate if you're
[552]
trading the euro US dollar these are
[554]
exactly correct and if you're trading
[556]
the pound Japanese yen these numbers
[558]
slightly change but stay in a range that
[560]
is very similar the best way to
[562]
experiment with this is to open up your
[565]
demonstration trading account and to
[568]
play around with taking orders and
[570]
taking trades and whatever else then
[572]
we're going to talk about that a little
[573]
bit later on but the best way to find
[575]
out what each thing is worth is to open
[577]
up your your trading platform and start
[579]
playing around with this and start
[581]
taking a few trades to wrap things up I
