The Secret Ways The Oil Industry Brainwashes You | Smog + Mirrors - YouTube

[7]
may I just say to all delegates I
[11]
apologize for the way this process has
[14]
unfolded I'm deeply sorry this is the
[17]
president of cop26 welling up with tears
[20]
as he closes negotiations on our last
[23]
potential chance to avert climate
[25]
catastrophe
[30]
because of people like this a highly
[33]
paid network of politicians lobbyists
[36]
and investors conspiring from the
[39]
Shadows to block climate action
[41]
sacrificing Humanity itself for
[44]
short-term profit
[46]
these people are the biggest threat to
[49]
our planet right now and they're winning
[53]
Mr Pink knows how they greenwash your
[56]
money Mr White knows how they buy your
[59]
politicians Miss blue knows how they
[61]
steal your elections and Miss Black
[63]
knows how they sue the out of your
[66]
government they've agreed to reveal to
[68]
us how these dark arts work this green
[72]
marketing is intended to trick all of us
[74]
they took them out in a five-star hotel
[76]
is maybe an expensive hound dog with
[78]
caviar as you become victimless
[81]
harassment because I used more dirty
[83]
shoes the cowboy doesn't have as much
[86]
access to this information because the
[88]
scale of power of all steel companies
[90]
exists in every part of your life
[95]
foreign
[96]
[Music]
[103]
spell the end of our Survival on this
[107]
plan

[Music]
[113]
I was the chief investment officer for
[115]
sustainable investing at BlackRock the
[117]
world's largest asset manager that now
[119]
has around 10 trillion dollars under
[121]
management that's trillions with a t you
[124]
could say that it's the company that
[126]
controls the world
[128]
BlackRock owns fossil fuel reserves
[131]
equivalent to nearly 10 trillion
[133]
gigatons of carbon related emission if
[136]
you were to use that all in one year
[137]
that would be 30 of the total emissions
[141]
in 2017. having LED what was called the
[146]
largest and the most ambitious effort
[149]
ever to turn Wall Street Green
[151]
I can tell you that the vast majority of
[154]
his marketing and it doesn't work and
[158]
it's wasting our time
[163]
I'm a member of the European Parliament
[165]
so I vote on all legislation in the
[168]
European Union the most important
[170]
decisions in a way are taken here in
[172]
Brussels in the European Parliament from
[174]
regulating engines for cars to emissions
[177]
trading how power plants are regulated
[180]
in the European Union
[182]
for decades the fossil fuel industry has
[185]
done everything to Lobby to confuse the
[188]
scientific debate to cast doubt about
[191]
what they knew that the climate change
[193]
exists it's man-made and it's going to
[196]
heat the planet in a way that is
[198]
threatening our existence on it and this
[201]
is the result of a constant onslaught of
[203]
Lobby
[205]
I am an elected state representative in
[208]
the United States I was very shocked to
[210]
find out as I was on the campaign trail
[212]
that most elected officials Democrats
[215]
and Republicans and those running for
[216]
office take tens and thousands of
[218]
dollars from philosophical companies and
[220]
they do it without any type of regret or
[223]
remorse
[224]
I was the heart of Energy Efficiency
[227]
unit located in bosses I worked on the
[230]
Indian DeSoto treaty which protects
[233]
foreign investment in fossil fuels by
[236]
means of private arbitration where
[239]
companies can ask for billions of tools
[242]
of compensation if the climate policy
[244]
impacts your profit
[248]
these whistleblowers come from the world
[250]
of the white collar Elite where the soft
[253]
edge of polluting power tries to
[255]
convince us that rather than damaging
[256]
the planet fossil fuel companies are
[259]
actually the ones trying to save it
[263]
we found out the fossil fuel industry
[265]
was causing global warming in the 80s
[267]
oil and gas companies who had secretly
[270]
known this for decades began to act
[272]
differently they began trying to
[274]
convince us that they were good for
[276]
society just good for you good for us
[279]
and good for the future of Britain they
[282]
even started to claim that they were
[284]
Protectors of the environment if we told
[286]
you that a certain Oil Company wanted to
[289]
push a pipeline through this lovely
[290]
Welsh Valley sending bulldozers into the
[294]
snowdonia National Park
[295]
would probably quite rightly be very
[298]
alarm this is the valley after not
[301]
before shell laid its pipeline you could
[304]
be sure of shell
[306]
but can you several years after this
[310]
commercial was released 150 tons of oil
[313]
leaked from another shell pipeline
[315]
nearby killing scores of local wildlife
[318]
Shell's reputation for conservation
[321]
meant that the judge let them off with a
[323]
low fine
[325]
green washing had begun and as energy
[328]
companies lulled our concerns with this
[330]
public illusion secretly they began to
[333]
infiltrate governments courts and banks
[336]
to ensure that society would always be
[339]
powerless to stop the oil
[342]
our whistleblowers are going to tell us
[345]
how this new reality was invented
[347]
[Music]
[352]
the divestment movement has been one of
[354]
the most powerful tools in the fight
[355]
against climate change by encouraging
[358]
investors to move their money out of oil
[360]
and gas and turn their investment
[361]
portfolios green
[363]
but who moves the money around
[366]
where does it go my job entailed going
[369]
across all of our investment processes
[372]
across the firm for 10 trillion dollars
[374]
of investing
[376]
and to make sure that these investment
[379]
processes were taking into consideration
[382]
environmental and social factors
[384]
sometimes called ESG or environmental
[387]
social and corporate governance factors
[389]
to make sure that we're investing as
[392]
responsibly as possible while still
[395]
serving our client interests of
[397]
maximizing the return on their
[398]
Investments the the people in charge of
[400]
managing investment portfolios like
[402]
BlackRock couldn't risk losing money by
[405]
moving Investments out of the insanely
[407]
profitable fossil fuel trade and into
[409]
Greener companies so they had to come up
[412]
with a plan they created a new kind of
[415]
sustainable investment product called an
[418]
ESG fund which stands for environmental
[421]
social and corporate governance
[424]
the best way to think about it is that
[426]
this is the biggest and the most
[427]
large-scale effort ever to turn Wall
[430]
Street Green but it's all a carefully
[432]
crafted illusion I started to realize
[435]
that none of it made me sense so every
[438]
single time we would have a choice we
[440]
have to focus on either making money or
[443]
making the world a better place and the
[446]
reality is while we were taught in the
[447]
world that you could do both at the same
[449]
time the reality is that most of that
[452]
was just marketing to get people to feel
[454]
better about what we're doing they're
[456]
just moving money around behind the
[457]
scenes these ESG funds still contain
[461]
fossil fuel investments in fact other
[464]
than the new ESG label they're almost
[466]
identical on Wall Street at large is
[469]
these are not an opportunity to then
[471]
exploit the growing social angst about
[473]
the fact that nothing is getting done by
[476]
selling a bunch of
[477]
disingenuous investment products to the
[480]
market that create the impression that
[482]
they're doing something about it when
[484]
instructors just an opportunity to get
[486]
more fees out of people and because no
[488]
one actually is regulating what it means
[490]
to be green there is no evidence that
[492]
any of these things lower emissions or
[494]
create any kind of impact
[497]
BlackRock became acutely aware of
[499]
negative public opinion when protesters
[501]
stormed their offices in Paris but their
[504]
solution was to Simply say that their
[507]
Investments were green and they did that
[509]
by changing the very definition of green
[512]
itself if you go to the grocery store
[515]
and you see two apples under the exact
[517]
same in every way but one of them has an
[520]
organic sticker most people will pick
[522]
the one that's organic governments could
[524]
easily solve this by regulating what
[526]
counts as a green investment but not
[529]
only are they failing to do that they're
[531]
actually going in the opposite direction
[533]
while oil and coal are the traditional
[535]
bogeymen of climate change natural gas
[538]
also accounts for 8 billion tons of CO2
[542]
a year and 40 million tons of methane
[545]
which traps 120 times more heat than CO2
[548]
but the fossil fuel companies are now
[551]
waging a secret War to classify gas as a
[554]
green investment so the European Union
[556]
is about to get legislation that would
[560]
classify natural gas as green and
[563]
investment in natural gas as green
[565]
investment that might well spell the the
[568]
end of of climate friendly investment
[572]
and thereby really make our efforts to
[576]
stop climate change to respect the 125
[578]
degree Target so much more difficult and
[581]
and they're both threatened our Survival
[584]
on this planet and this is the result of
[587]
a constant onslaught of Lobby
[590]
this hidden campaign to Rebrand gas as a
[593]
clean energy has coincided with a public
[595]
psyops campaign to trick us
[598]
wherever you look it seems that
[600]
companies like Chevron may have snuck
[603]
gas stoves into their ads we know it's
[606]
going to take many forms of energy to
[609]
meet the world's needs while creating a
[611]
cleaner future for all they're hiring
[615]
very well known and established
[616]
influencers to pump gas into their Vans
[619]
or use a natural gas stove these are all
[623]
different tactics that they're putting
[624]
into place to now go after young people
[627]
to go after a generation of people that
[630]
are probably the most aggressive in
[632]
tackling climate change and essentially
[635]
brainwashed this generation of people
[637]
which is something they've been doing
[638]
for a very long time trying to influence
[640]
folks to use their products don't miss a
[642]
bunch of adventurous people going
[644]
head-to-head in the most amazing lower
[646]
CO2 emissions road trip watch it now at
[648]
youtube.com shell you see fossil
[651]
companies trying to trick the American
[653]
public and and maintain their dominance
[656]
through controlling almost every part of
[658]
Society they not only pay into some of
[662]
these media websites but they even
[664]
create their own to basically serve as a
[668]
fake website that can share their
[671]
propaganda and also smear whoever they
[674]
want to smear
[676]
but how did the fossil fuel Lobby
[678]
convince our governments to classify gas
[680]
as a green investment the first method
[683]
they use is outright bribery we have
[687]
seen examples in in the past that
[689]
countries that have a huge share of of
[693]
social Industries Azerbaijan for example
[696]
that has long-standing interest to sell
[698]
their gas to sell their oil to to Europe
[701]
they have bribed politicians they have
[704]
invited them on trips for example to
[706]
Azerbaijan first class flights five-star
[709]
hotels they find gift baskets with
[713]
caviar or expensive handbags or whatever
[716]
in their in their hotel rooms will have
[719]
cases on camera where members have
[722]
accepted bribes from undercover
[725]
investigative journalists for some
[728]
European MEPS the planet itself is worth
[731]
less than the price of a Louis Vuitton
[733]
handbag for those who want more money a
[736]
second method comes into play the
[739]
revolving door where politicians are
[741]
offered a job upon leaving office if
[744]
they pull a few favors the easiest thing
[748]
in a way to to buy politicians is to
[751]
offer them a job in the future
[754]
in in the European commission after
[756]
leaving office more than 50 percent of
[759]
of the Commissioners are joining
[760]
different Lobby organizations the former
[763]
German Chancellor Godzilla is probably
[765]
the biggest example of of such a
[768]
revolving door into the fossil fuel
[770]
industry
[771]
in office
[774]
green lid attack lawn and then after
[777]
leaving office joined the oversight
[780]
board for that tripod so he was brought
[783]
up by Vladimir Putin by the it's a
[785]
Russian state-controlled Energy company
[788]
that's from the third method they used
[791]
is astroturfing where they set up front
[794]
organizations fake professorships and
[797]
fake industry organizations to convince
[800]
politicians that A Chorus of people all
[803]
want them to classify gas as green even
[806]
if you're trying to talk to all sides of
[808]
the argument and get well informed and
[811]
then you maybe speak to a professor then
[812]
you speak to an industry Association
[814]
speak to a couple of companies and
[816]
you're hearing the same argument time
[818]
and again and you think for everyone
[820]
agrees on that so that must be the right
[822]
thing to do for the law that that I'll
[825]
have to vote on not realizing that
[828]
actually you only ever talked to to the
[831]
same fossil fuel companies time and
[833]
again just two different organizations
[836]
that they fund that they control
[839]
the fossil fuel industry has even
[841]
started using an election manipulation
[843]
technique where they siphon votes away
[845]
from climate activist politicians by
[848]
paying random people with the same name
[850]
as them to run on the same ballot and we
[853]
actually saw this same situation in two
[856]
other Florida State Senate research
[858]
where there was a fake candidate that
[859]
was filed in that election to basically
[862]
pull votes away from Democrats because
[864]
that candidate was advertised as being
[867]
Progressive this has been referred to as
[869]
the ghost candidate scheme or the fake
[871]
candidate scheme and it really is one of
[875]
the most egregious examples of political
[877]
corruption
[878]
by rebranding itself financially legally
[881]
and in the Public Image the oil and gas
[884]
industry is weathering the tide of
[885]
climate legislation
[887]
even when that strategy fails they have
[890]
one final secret weapon at their
[892]
disposal an obscure agreement from the
[894]
90s called the energy Charter treaty
[896]
gives fossil fuel companies the power to
[899]
sue foreign governments for billions if
[902]
they change any law that affects their
[904]
Investments
[907]
[Music]
[909]
cases are hidden from the public in
[911]
so-called Shadow courts the second any
[914]
government comes up with climate
[915]
legislation corporate lawyers appear
[918]
from the Shadows
[920]
[Music]
[925]
so what is climate orbitration it is a
[928]
Central Court its parallel system to all
[930]
Justice System a shadow Court can
[933]
you lawyers
[935]
as arbitrator the other two represent
[937]
either the country or the energy firm
[940]
but they rotate jobs earning millions in
[944]
the process
[946]
146 cases to go these are the name cases
[950]
it is likely that there are more faces
[952]
that we don't know because under the
[955]
United chapter 13 there is no obligation
[957]
for the investor notebook for the
[960]
government according to see to make the
[962]
case known When Miss Black raised the
[964]
alarm about these shadow courts to her
[966]
colleagues she was bullied into
[968]
submission by fossil fuel lobbyists who
[971]
had secretly infiltrated the energy
[972]
Charter treaty Secretariat where they
[974]
worked it was unbelievable to be in
[977]
Brussels the capital of Europe in 2018
[980]
and to the arrest and I was wondering
[984]
why this guy was reacting so deadly and
[988]
in February I think 2020 found out who
[991]
works for full size fuel company while
[993]
he was at the same time Secretariat
[994]
[Music]
[995]
[Applause]
[997]
what this means is that no matter how
[999]
loud you protest no matter who you elect
[1002]
and no matter how robust International
[1004]
Agreements are ultimately it will all be
[1008]
blocked by three corporate lawyers in a
[1010]
room
[1010]
[Music]
[1015]
and they're committed to net zero
[1016]
emissions by 2050.
[1019]
becoming a net zero emissions energy
[1021]
business by 2050 instead of his Society
[1025]
nice words you say but what does it
[1028]
actually mean for starters it would mean
[1030]
not conducting a shadow War to prevent
[1033]
Net Zero the truth is that global
[1036]
warming isn't your fault in fact just
[1039]
100 companies are responsible for 71 of
[1042]
global emissions
[1044]
they're willing to manipulate every
[1046]
aspect of reality to hide that
[1049]
across the world there's a sense that
[1051]
we're finally divesting from fossil
[1053]
fuels our governments are finally
[1056]
investing in green energy
[1058]
finally there are new laws being passed
[1061]
to protect our climate
[1063]
[Music]
[1067]
I realized that all three of those
[1069]
things are just carefully woven
[1070]
Illusions it may already be too late
[1091]
