How marijuana penny stocks led DataDash to be a crypto YouTuber | Crypto Stories Ep.8 - YouTube
Channel: Cointelegraph
[0]
So to kick it off from the start, when I was a聽
child, I was pretty happy and content with the聽聽
[4]
way things were. You know, I had a loving family聽
growing up. But I think one of the biggest issues聽聽
[8]
I had in hindsight was that I didn't have much聽
of a passion in my earlier years. You know,聽聽
[13]
I was always okay in school, kind of getting聽
by, but I never really had anything that stuck聽with me.
[18]
One thing I did try when I was a bit聽
younger is creating YouTube videos with my friends聽聽
[21]
back in 2007. I made about probably a dozen聽
channels that ended up failing in the process.聽聽
[26]
But in the fall of 2011, a teacher had noticed聽
my engagement and participation in the discussion聽聽
[31]
topic we had in our social studies class.聽
And he kind of nudged me on the shoulders聽聽
[35]
to watch the 2012 Republican presidential聽
debate. And I kind of thought to myself,聽聽
[39]
you know, I'm not going to go into this with much聽
enthusiasm. Myself with politics, please. Like,聽聽
[44]
I don't have any kind of passions, why would I聽
do good at this? So they started talking about聽聽
[48]
foreign policy and down the list the same thing聽
over and over. That was until they went on to a聽聽
[53]
gentleman named Ron Paul who shared a completely聽
different take on the issues. Looking back on it,聽聽
[58]
I really owe a lot to Ron for leading me to where聽
I am today. So put it lightly, this event sparked聽聽
[63]
a dopamine rush in my head, leading me down聽
a rabbit hole of studying things I wouldn't聽聽
[67]
have even dreamed of learning about, such as聽
foreign policy, economics, finance, you name it.
[72]
And a few weeks passed, I started diving into the聽
2008 recession, learning about the housing crisis聽聽
[77]
and inevitably learning about the Federal Reserve.聽
I learned very quickly that due to excessive聽聽
[82]
printing of new money from the Federal Reserve,聽
I had to start hedging myself, my wealth. Well,聽聽
[87]
what little I had at the time. And funny enough,聽
I hadn't been excited for anything like this聽聽
[91]
throughout my life. I can finally remember my聽
dad picking me up from school on my birthday聽聽
[95]
as we went straight to the bank to open up my聽
first brokerage account so I could purchase my聽聽
[99]
first stock. From there, I started diving deeper聽
into finance, investing in the stock market, and聽聽
[104]
buying just about anything from risky marijuana聽
penny stocks to Chinese solar companies. I came聽聽
[110]
across a YouTube video titled "What is Bitcoin?".聽
It mentioned promises of decentralization,聽聽
[115]
mentioning how it utilized miners, minting聽
new coins to secure peer-to-peer transactions,聽聽
[120]
which all the time really flew over my head,聽
to be honest. And this is where I made what is聽聽
[125]
probably the most expensive mistake I'll ever聽
make within my life. Instead of going to the聽聽
[131]
website to learn more about the technology and聽
what it offered, I, as a trader at the time,聽聽
[136]
wanted to see if there was an actual market聽
to buy Bitcoin. And to my surprise, there was聽聽
[140]
a website called Bitstamp. I found Bitcoin's聽
price feed on the website and immediately聽聽
[146]
laughed to myself: "$3 per coin? Seriously? People聽
are spending $3 on some fake internet money?"
[153]
To be honest, I had a genuinely negative聽
opinion on Bitcoin. I can't lie. I grew聽聽
[158]
to becoming so skeptical of the financial world聽
after learning about the 2008 financial crisis.聽聽
[162]
And to be honest, it all seemed too good to聽
be true at the start. But in February of 2017,聽聽
[167]
I revisited its all-time high price of $1,200, I聽
read the Bitcoin whitepaper, and after about an聽聽
[174]
hour it felt like a slap across the face. The聽
solution I'd been looking for, for all these聽聽
[178]
years, was right under my nose. And the years聽
since I've been buying crypto and analyzing the聽聽
[183]
market through my YouTube channel DataDash, which聽
has amassed over 500,000 subscribers globally.聽聽
[189]
Cryptocurrencies are clearly a once in a lifetime聽
opportunity breakthrough innovation, and they聽聽
[194]
will continue to impact our lives in miraculous聽
ways, similar to how the Internet or electricity聽聽
[199]
reshaped our day to day lives. But if you take聽
anything away from this video, remember this: as聽聽
[205]
you go throughout your life and you discover new聽
emerging trends and technologies in the market,聽聽
[209]
make sure that you don't become your own worst聽
enemy. And what I mean by that is to always make聽聽
[215]
sure you maintain a fresh perspective, always keep聽
open to new ideas. And on top of that as well,聽聽
[221]
understand that even though you may not see聽
value in something today, that there still may聽聽
[224]
be value there that is yet to be understood.聽
Who knows, it just might change your life.
