3 Ways You Can Cut The Cost of Your Cabin Without Downgrading Category - YouTube
Channel: Emma Cruises
[0]
when booking a cruise have you ever
[1]
wanted a way to reduce the cost but
[3]
without dropping a cabin grade
[5]
on every cruise ship there are some
[7]
cabins that you can book for a reduced
[9]
price
[9]
but the cruise lines rarely advertise
[11]
them in this video i'm going to tell you
[13]
everything you need to look out for when
[14]
booking a cabin
[15]
so that you can get the best cabin on
[17]
your budget hey guys it's emma here
[19]
welcome to the emma cruises youtube
[21]
channel
[21]
here on this channel we're all about
[23]
saving you money so that you can make
[25]
the most out of your budget
[26]
and ultimately cruise more often if
[29]
you're interested
[30]
in cruising more and better hit that
[32]
subscribe button
[33]
the first way that you can dramatically
[35]
reduce the cost of a cabin and i'm
[36]
talking hundreds possibly even thousands
[39]
of dollars
[39]
is to book what is called a obstructed
[42]
view cabin
[42]
a lot of people run and they hide when
[44]
they hear the phrase obstructive view
[46]
and if you're one of those people i
[48]
don't blame you
[49]
but it can be a brilliant way to save a
[51]
lot of money
[52]
and some of the cabins aren't really
[53]
obstructed at all
[55]
an obstructive view cabin
[58]
an obstructed view cabin is basically a
[61]
cabin where there is something in front
[62]
of your window or your balcony
[64]
this could be a full lifeboat blocking
[66]
everything you can see from the window
[68]
or it could be the tiniest bit of
[70]
machinery that's on the deck
[72]
below your balcony i like to think of
[74]
obstructive view cabins as those seats
[76]
that i always buy in the theater
[78]
where you've got a bit of a pole in the
[79]
way maybe a bar in the bottom third
[82]
that's pretty much what an obstructed
[83]
view cabin is booking an obstructive
[86]
view cabin doesn't just mean that you
[87]
get the cabin you want cheaper it also
[89]
means that you could possibly afford a
[91]
cabin grade that you wouldn't be able to
[92]
afford before
[93]
if you're somebody who's used to
[95]
cruising in inside cabins i know i
[97]
am having an obstructive view ocean view
[99]
or a balcony
[100]
is a real treat there are a few things
[102]
that could be obstructing the way it
[104]
could be a lifeboat it could be
[106]
machinery
[107]
or it could be something a little bit
[108]
more strange some cabins are actually
[110]
obstructed by
[111]
whirlpools some have kind of crew
[114]
passageways that go between the window
[116]
and the outside of the ship
[117]
and technically that's enough of an
[119]
obstruction that that cabin cannot be
[121]
sold at full price
[123]
if you're somebody who has one of these
[125]
obstructed views that basically isn't
[127]
obstructed at all
[128]
it's a really really really good way and
[130]
it feels so good to be in one of those
[132]
cabins and know that everybody around
[134]
you
[134]
your carried neighbors they paid way
[136]
more than you and you know they're just
[138]
one meter further over it feels so good
[141]
there
[142]
are obstructive view cabins on every
[144]
cruise ship and cruise lines tend to be
[146]
very careful when it comes to
[147]
obstructive views they would much prefer
[149]
to sell a cabin
[150]
as an obstructed view and the passenger
[152]
gets there and they think this is
[154]
amazing
[155]
as opposed to they sell it as a standard
[157]
cabin and there's a little bit in the
[159]
way somebody complains
[160]
they don't want to have to deal with
[161]
that so they definitely are on the side
[163]
of caution
[164]
and they call a lot of things obstructed
[166]
when really i don't think they are
[169]
when it comes to obstructed cabins the
[171]
absolute cheapest cabin you can get is
[173]
an obstructed ocean view
[174]
and these are usually the same price as
[176]
an inside cabin
[178]
if you're used to cruising in an inside
[179]
cabin you'll know that one of the
[181]
weirdest things is waking up it's pitch
[183]
black
[184]
you don't know if it's 3 a.m or 3 p.m if
[186]
you're able to get an obstructed ocean
[189]
view you at least have light
[191]
even if you have a full lifeboat that
[193]
covers the entire window you don't have
[195]
to worry about waking up in the dark
[196]
and if that's the same price as an
[198]
inside cabin or even a little bit more
[200]
i would definitely pay just for the
[202]
daylight a friend of mine vinnie
[204]
actually managed to get an ocean view
[206]
cabin an obstructed view ocean view
[208]
cabin
[209]
that's difficult to say for cheaper than
[211]
he would have paid for an inside cabin
[213]
so in that situation
[214]
it's a no-brainer at least to me to get
[216]
that obstructed view
[218]
because you weren't going to have a view
[219]
anyway so you might as well look at the
[221]
lifeboat
[222]
the amount of obstruction within an
[224]
ocean view or a balcony
[226]
cabin can vary dramatically some are
[228]
completely blocked like these ones on
[230]
the msc preziosa
[231]
and some are not really blocked at all
[234]
if you have a look here at the
[235]
msc preziosa you can see this deck where
[238]
the windows are behind the lifeboats
[241]
the most common type of thing to be in
[243]
your way is lifeboats because cruise
[244]
ships do need to have lifeboats
[247]
there are benefits above and beyond just
[249]
the cost saving of getting an obstructed
[251]
view cabin
[252]
the obstructed view cabins often have
[254]
the best locations because they're right
[255]
behind the lifeboats a lot of them
[257]
they're right in the middle of the ship
[259]
i know some people do care more about
[261]
the location than they do the view from
[262]
the balcony
[263]
so if you're somebody like that getting
[265]
the destructive view in the middle
[267]
can be a really good way to get that
[269]
location that you want but without
[270]
paying the premium price
[272]
it can be tricky to find the right
[274]
obstructed view cabin and basically the
[276]
more research you do into the cabins the
[278]
better experience you're going to have
[280]
if you're booking through an agent
[281]
you're definitely going to want to work
[283]
with them
[283]
and let them know that you are open to
[286]
obstructed view cabins
[287]
then they can have a look and you can
[289]
chat about how obstructed you would like
[291]
to go
[292]
if you're somebody who really is into
[294]
researching your cruises looking at deck
[296]
plans
[296]
you can find out how obstructed each
[298]
cabin is and find out
[300]
which ones you'd be happy with if you're
[302]
booking directly through the cruise line
[304]
or through some agents you can see deck
[306]
plans where you can see
[307]
which cabins are obstructed view there
[309]
are various pictures on the internet of
[311]
each cabin and the view
[312]
so the more research you do the better
[314]
chance you have of getting
[315]
a good one a really really good one a
[318]
friend of mine saved almost
[320]
1 000 by doing this just from switching
[322]
from a regular balcony
[324]
to an obstructed balcony and her balcony
[326]
wasn't one of these where you couldn't
[327]
see anything
[328]
there was just stuff below a thousand
[331]
dollars
[331]
it's important to note that the only way
[333]
that you're gonna get an obstructive
[335]
view cabin is if you book an obstructive
[337]
view cabin
[338]
the cruise line can't assign you an
[339]
obstructive view if you booked a regular
[342]
cabin
[342]
some people do worry about this but
[344]
unless you specifically said
[346]
you are happy with an obstructed view
[348]
you're not gonna get one
[349]
this brings us on nicely to point two
[351]
and this is what i do
[352]
every single cruise i book what is
[354]
called a guaranteed cabin
[356]
when you book a guaranteed cabin you are
[358]
guaranteed to at least get
[360]
that cabin so i tend to book guaranteed
[363]
insights guaranteed ocean views and i
[365]
have on occasion booked a guaranteed
[367]
balcony
[368]
a couple of years ago i took my first
[370]
cunard cruise and that's where i got the
[371]
idea to start this youtube channel
[373]
actually
[374]
because i'd never been on anything like
[375]
a cunard cruise before
[377]
i actually booked a guaranteed balcony
[379]
cabin and it was absolutely
[381]
amazing i'm very used to cruising in an
[383]
inside cabin and it wasn't much more for
[386]
a balcony
[386]
if you're somebody who's used to
[388]
cruising at a lower cabin grade
[390]
you don't care where your cabin is i
[393]
don't anyway
[394]
if you're somebody like me who's used to
[396]
cruising in inside cabins ocean view
[398]
cabins
[398]
you probably don't mind where your
[400]
location is of your balcony because
[402]
you're so excited to be in a balcony
[404]
i think it's important to note that when
[406]
you book a guaranteed cabin you are
[408]
guaranteed at least the cabin that you
[410]
have
[410]
but you do get assigned kind of at the
[412]
last minute you do end up with the
[414]
leftover cabins
[415]
i have never ever ever had a bad cabin
[418]
or regretted the idea of not picking my
[421]
cabin location
[422]
but if you're somebody who particularly
[424]
wants to be really near the buffet or
[426]
near the kids club or you have a reason
[428]
to be in a specific location
[430]
a guaranteed cabin probably isn't right
[432]
for you if you're somebody like me who
[434]
is just
[435]
very very excited to be in an ocean view
[437]
or a balcony you're very happy to be on
[439]
a cruise you don't mind where you are
[441]
guaranteeds can be a brilliant way to
[443]
save loads of money
[444]
the brilliant thing about choosing a
[446]
guaranteed cabin is that if you had
[448]
chosen that cabin which you could have
[450]
done you would have paid more so you
[452]
feel like you're kind of getting
[453]
something for free
[454]
and for me i don't mind where my cabin
[456]
is so it's a really good option
[458]
not all cruise lines offer guaranteed
[460]
cabins some don't give you any discounts
[462]
even if you don't pick
[464]
your own cabin if you are booking on a
[466]
cruise lines website you'll probably see
[467]
two massive boxes one of which will be
[470]
i'll pick my own cabin and the other one
[472]
will be
[472]
i'll let you decide and depending on
[474]
which one you pick that is how much you
[476]
will pay
[477]
if you are booking through an agent just
[479]
let them know that you're flexible on
[481]
cabin location
[482]
and you can save a lot of money by doing
[484]
that a guaranteed cabin
[485]
isn't a great option for somebody who
[487]
really wants a specific cabin grade
[489]
just because you've booked a guaranteed
[491]
inside cabin that means you're
[493]
guaranteed to at least get an inside
[495]
cabin but you could get an upgrade to an
[497]
ocean view or a balcony
[498]
or a suite anything could happen you
[501]
might think that is fantastic why would
[503]
anybody not want an upgrade
[505]
but what you've got to bear in mind is
[507]
this is what the cruise line thinks
[509]
is an upgrade so you might think the
[511]
middle of the ship is the best place
[513]
they might upgrade you to say an ocean
[515]
view with an obstructed view
[517]
but it might be right at the front of
[518]
the ship and you really don't want that
[520]
but because you've agreed that you're
[521]
not going to pick the location you're
[523]
stuck at that point you have kind of
[525]
taken a lucky dip and that's what you've
[527]
got
[528]
it is quite common if you've booked a
[529]
guaranteed inside cabin to be upgraded
[532]
to
[532]
a obstructed view ocean view or if
[535]
you've booked an ocean view to be
[536]
upgraded to a obstructed view balcony i
[540]
don't know about you but this is
[541]
really tricky to say this is quite
[543]
common because these cabins are often
[545]
left until last some people are scared
[547]
of booking the obstructive view cabins
[549]
especially people who are first-time
[550]
cruisers or they're not very confident
[552]
in looking through deck plans
[554]
and working out what all of the symbols
[556]
mean it is quite confusing
[558]
i don't blame you if you are scared of
[559]
that stuff but it does mean that these
[561]
cabins are often left until last
[563]
so when the guaranteed cabins are being
[565]
assigned
[566]
there's normally a lot of space for
[567]
people to get upgraded into the
[569]
obstructed view cabins
[571]
if you're cruising as part of a group
[572]
you've got multiple cabins and you book
[574]
all guaranteed cabins
[576]
you are not in any way guaranteed that
[578]
they're going to be close together
[580]
when i took the cunard cruise that i had
[581]
a guaranteed balcony on i was cruising
[583]
with my parents and my brother
[585]
and we were very lucky we got a lovely
[588]
balcony on both sides we both got
[590]
guaranteed balconies one on one side one
[592]
on the other
[593]
if one side was a bit boring we could go
[595]
across and look at the good view and
[596]
then go back
[597]
and it was absolutely brilliant i did
[599]
the same thing on a costa cruise that i
[601]
took
[601]
last year i had a guaranteed inside
[604]
cabin and i cruised with my parents on
[606]
that cruise too they were in a
[607]
guaranteed balcony cabin
[608]
and i was about three miles away from
[611]
them walking from one cabin to the other
[613]
i think it was up four flights of stairs
[615]
and across the other end of the ship
[617]
they were very far cabins away which is
[619]
completely fine i'm an adult
[621]
um i don't need to be that close to my
[622]
parents but just bear in mind that
[624]
you're not guaranteed to have cabins
[626]
that are anywhere close to the other
[628]
cabins
[629]
even if you've booked together saying
[631]
you're a family of five and you're going
[633]
on a cruise
[633]
you go on the website you type in five
[636]
people and it comes up with a handful of
[638]
cabins
[639]
there are cabins for families of five
[641]
but these are usually limited they might
[642]
be called something fancy like a
[645]
family balcony or something like that
[647]
but there's less cabins that accommodate
[649]
five people
[649]
as opposed to three or four people one
[652]
thing that
[653]
is worth doing which does go against
[654]
everything that you probably think
[656]
makes sense is to have a look at getting
[658]
multiple cabins
[660]
if there's only a few cabins left on a
[662]
ship that hold five
[663]
people the cruise line can pretty much
[665]
charge whatever it wants
[666]
if you are able to cruise into cabins on
[669]
occasion it can be cheaper to get two
[671]
adjoining cabins rather than one cabin
[674]
for five
[675]
i know this sounds a bit strange but
[677]
just if you are in that situation and
[679]
you're booking a cruise you're looking
[680]
on the website
[681]
just try out different cabin
[683]
combinations on a lot of cruise ships
[685]
you'll find cabins which are adjoining
[687]
cabins i've stayed in adjoining cabins i
[689]
stayed on them on my first ever cruise i
[691]
was 11 years old and i was cruising with
[693]
family
[694]
and it was absolutely out of this world
[696]
that's why i'm still talking about
[697]
cruising on the internet now
[699]
if you do have a good agent they'll be
[701]
able to find you adjoining cabins but
[702]
it's just something you need to think
[704]
about
[704]
you also need to have an adult in every
[707]
cabin it doesn't matter
[708]
if you're in an adjoining cabin each
[710]
cabin still has to have
[712]
adults in it and it's usually a person
[714]
over 21.
[715]
so if you're a family of five two adults
[717]
and three children and you were thinking
[719]
about cruising in a cabin for five
[721]
and you decide to have a look just on
[723]
the off chance at two adjoining cabins
[725]
this can work out cheaper but you do
[727]
have to have one adult in
[728]
each cabin the same thing often goes
[730]
with solo cruisers which also
[733]
goes kind of against what you think
[734]
makes sense if a cruise line does have
[736]
solo cabins these are a great option and
[739]
they're often the cheapest option for
[741]
solo cruisers
[742]
but they do sell out pretty fast if a
[744]
cruise line's only got say
[745]
two solo cabins available they can put
[748]
the price up they can
[749]
charge whatever they want for those and
[751]
sometimes it's actually cheaper as a
[753]
solo cruiser
[754]
to cruise in a balcony by yourself i
[756]
know it doesn't make any
[758]
sense but trust me if you're there
[759]
you're booking a cruise
[761]
sometimes it can just be worth looking
[763]
at different combinations of cabins even
[765]
if they're higher grade cabins
[767]
sometimes they can be cheaper i've heard
[769]
of people i haven't personally done this
[770]
but i have known people who've been
[772]
thinking about booking multiple balcony
[774]
cabins
[775]
they've decided you know let's just
[777]
price up a suite why not i'd like that
[779]
sweet life
[780]
and it actually comes out cheaper
[781]
sometimes so just take that five minutes
[784]
before you press book and think about
[786]
different cabin combinations you've got
[788]
nothing to lose and you could get
[789]
something really really good
[791]
the next video that you need to watch is
[793]
this one which is all about why i don't
[795]
think there's any bad
[796]
cabins i would much prefer to be on a
[798]
cruise on the worst cabin in the ship
[800]
than here stuck in the uk because of
[803]
coronavirus quarantine
