[0]
how to cancel your upcoming trip and get
[2]
a refund 8 tips I'm Chris this is yellow
[4]
productions I do travel guys that are
[6]
fun informed entertaining this video I'm
[9]
doing my special request because I've
[11]
gotten these questions over and over
[12]
again first Chris what do you think my
[15]
chances are of getting a refund for my
[17]
upcoming trip or - Chris how do I get my
[20]
money back for a flight the airline is
[22]
cancelled both those questions I will
[24]
answer in this video some airlines and
[27]
hotels have been really generous with
[29]
their refund policies others though are
[31]
in survival mode and are basically
[33]
refusing to issue any cash refunds only
[36]
offering flight vouchers for flights in
[39]
the future for airlines that might not
[41]
even be in business travelers are
[43]
experiencing call volumes that are heavy
[45]
often hours trying to call the airlines
[47]
and so I'll give you some other tips
[49]
than just having to call the airlines
[51]
and being on hold for 14 hours tip
[54]
number one go online and read your
[56]
airlines hotel cruise lines refund and
[59]
cancellation policy many companies have
[61]
issued special refund and cancellation
[64]
policies just for the current pandemic
[66]
outbreak so make sure to check out those
[68]
two and they've been changing almost on
[70]
a daily basis so read up on that find
[73]
out what is covered and what isn't
[75]
covered so that you know what you can
[77]
actually work around and work with for
[79]
that particular company you also should
[81]
read up on the refund policies of the
[83]
countries that your flight was traveling
[85]
from or to for example in the United
[88]
States and the European Union you are
[90]
eligible for a full refund if the
[92]
airline cancels your flight for any
[95]
reason a cash refund not a credit if you
[99]
know what the government rules are then
[101]
that gives you some leverage with the
[102]
airline if you do have to talk to them
[104]
later tip number two try refunding or
[108]
canceling online many airlines and
[110]
travel companies that didn't used to
[112]
offer online cancellation and refund
[114]
options now are why because their call
[118]
centers are inundated and they can't
[119]
handle it so their IT teams have added
[122]
new capabilities to cancel online so
[124]
check that out before you call and help
[127]
avoid the frustration now you might have
[129]
checked a week ago and there wasn't a
[130]
cancellation option with your company
[132]
that your
[132]
flying or traveling with but there might
[135]
be today if you can't find a way to
[136]
cancel on the website well try their
[138]
mobile apps some companies you can only
[140]
cancel on the mobile app because that's
[142]
the team that they had that implemented
[144]
it and they hadn't implemented it on the
[146]
website yet can't find anything in their
[147]
mobile app try filling out a customer
[150]
service form on the website requesting a
[152]
refund due to the cancellation can't
[155]
find the customer service form on the
[156]
website tried looking up their Twitter
[158]
account try looking up their Facebook
[160]
Cao try looking up their email address
[163]
try finding any other way to contact
[165]
them rather than calling them for a
[167]
recent hotel at a Marriott I emailed
[170]
them and a week later they cancelled it
[172]
and issued me a full refund it did take
[174]
a little while and actually I never got
[176]
a response to my email but they did
[179]
cancel my reservation and give me my
[181]
money back tip number three if you do
[183]
have to call them try calling during
[185]
off-hours if you're calling a us-based
[188]
airline we'll try calling them at 1 a.m.
[190]
los angeles time chances are they're not
[193]
getting many calls from the US people at
[195]
that time if you still can't get through
[197]
to the US numbers try calling some of
[199]
their international call centers for
[201]
example United Airlines has a Singapore
[204]
call center sometimes you can find the
[206]
international call center numbers on the
[208]
company's websites other times you might
[210]
have to dig a little bit like you can
[212]
search for American Airlines
[213]
international phone numbers and Google
[216]
and get various international call
[218]
center numbers now but you might be
[219]
saying Chris it cost a lot of money to
[221]
call long-distance to Singapore or the
[223]
philippines well then you should use
[225]
something like Skype where you can make
[227]
long-distance calls for only like 2
[229]
cents a minute the 2 cents a minute you
[231]
spend on that call might be well worth
[233]
saving the 3 hours on a hold time that
[235]
you'd spend on the US line if it's a
[237]
hotel that you're trying to cancel will
[239]
try calling the hotels direct number
[241]
instead of the general reservations line
[244]
and if the hotel's busy or they don't
[246]
answer it well leave them a voicemail
[248]
that was how I cancelled another hotel
[251]
reservation I was staying at nobody
[253]
would pick up the phone in the hotel's
[254]
local reservations I left them a
[257]
voicemail two days later cancelled full
[259]
refund now if you booked your flight
[260]
Hotel cruise via a third party like a
[263]
travel agent or Expedia or booking Talk
[266]
well chances are you're gonna have to
[267]
call them directly and adhere to their
[270]
cancellation policies this is actually
[272]
where I've heard travelers having the
[274]
most difficulty particularly with travel
[276]
agents and cruises not offering very
[279]
flexible cancellation policies because
[281]
the travel agents or these smaller
[283]
websites small companies they're hurting
[286]
too and so they don't want to give up
[288]
all of their revenue tip number four
[290]
wait if your trip isn't until May or
[292]
June
[293]
there's no rush to cancel it right now
[295]
there's tons of people that are rushing
[297]
to cancel trips they have within the
[298]
next three days in the next two weeks
[300]
let all those people get through to
[303]
cancel their things and you can get
[304]
through when the current crush of people
[307]
has subsided and also in general airline
[310]
cancellation and refund policies are
[312]
getting more generous generally not less
[315]
generous and so actually waiting a few
[318]
weeks might help you with a refund
[320]
because the airline might have extended
[322]
their policy to that or they might have
[324]
proactively canceled your flight and
[326]
given you a refund because you might
[328]
have been traveling to a destination
[329]
that's closed even for flights leaving
[332]
your country or going to that country
[334]
tip number five when you do finally talk
[336]
to a phone agent be nice be humble even
[340]
be pitiful don't be arrogant don't be
[343]
rude don't be bossy don't be angry none
[346]
of those things will help you get what
[348]
you want you want to make the telephone
[351]
agent want to help you and the way you
[353]
do that is by being humble by being kind
[356]
by being thankful and yes perhaps even
[359]
being a little bit pitiful swallow up
[362]
your pride and make that agent want to
[365]
help you make them want to give you that
[367]
refund make them feel that they are
[370]
making your day and they're really
[372]
helping you out by giving you your money
[374]
back and definitely thank them thank
[376]
their for what they're doing thanks for
[378]
answering the phone tell them that you
[379]
know times have been stressful for them
[381]
they'll really appreciate that and that
[383]
will make them want to help you tip
[385]
number six this is a don't instead of a
[387]
do don't accept credit if what you want
[391]
is a refund many airlines including
[393]
American Airlines their first step is to
[396]
offer you a voucher
[398]
a refund and if while you're on the
[401]
phone you accept that voucher for a
[403]
future flight that's it your chance of
[406]
getting a refund pretty much entirely
[408]
out the window now some airlines are
[410]
trying to sweeten the deal
[411]
American Airlines in particular will say
[413]
hey we'll give you 20% extra if you take
[416]
a voucher but if you're not sure whether
[418]
you're gonna be traveling over the next
[420]
12 months or not then you might not
[422]
really want that mouch ER you might want
[424]
your money back because that'll give you
[426]
more flexibility to fly maybe another
[429]
airline if they have cheaper rates and
[431]
this is also where that information that
[433]
you read and tip number one where I told
[435]
you to go on your country's websites to
[437]
learn about the legal rules for example
[439]
the US and EU refunds you can say
[442]
something not in a mr. know-it-all way
[444]
but something in a kind of naive way
[446]
where you allude to well but I think
[448]
I've heard that flights from the US are
[452]
eligible for refunds if they're
[453]
cancelled so can't I get a refund under
[456]
that policy you know be generic about it
[459]
don't say something like well you know
[461]
per US regulation blah blah blah if not
[464]
I'm gonna call my lawyer I mean they
[466]
really won't want to help you at that
[467]
point tip number seven if you're really
[470]
not getting anywhere with the telephone
[472]
agent well hang up and call again you
[474]
know these airlines hotels cruise
[476]
companies they have ton of phone agent's
[478]
phone agents are not often consistent
[481]
and so the current one that you're
[483]
talking to might not help you but if you
[485]
hang up and you call again you might get
[487]
someone who does help you how many times
[489]
you want to hang up and call again that
[492]
is up to you but I have found hanging up
[494]
and calling again is always an option
[496]
and often yields different results and
[499]
when I say hang up and call again I
[500]
don't mean be rude I don't mean be like
[502]
I'm not talking to you anymore and I'm
[503]
gonna call back just if you're not
[505]
getting anywhere think that agent for
[507]
their time hang up and call back again
[510]
and when you call again remember this
[511]
new agent is a new person you're talking
[513]
to so just start your story all over
[515]
again
[516]
humble pitiful ask for help you know the
[519]
drill
[519]
tip number eight none of these things
[521]
worked well then as a last resort you
[523]
can dispute the charge with your
[524]
credit-card company the reason why this
[526]
is a last resort is banks typically
[529]
require that you show proof they
[532]
you have tried to work with the party to
[534]
work things out before you file a
[536]
dispute so all of these phone calls
[539]
emails you will want to have documented
[542]
times things you've said who you've
[544]
talked to what the policies are on the
[547]
website what the policies are for the
[549]
country and those are all the things
[551]
you'll need to provide to the credit
[552]
card company to help in your dispute and
[555]
if the facts are in your case then the
[557]
bank may very well sign in your case and
[559]
issue a refund and a charge back to the
[562]
travel provider now once you've got your
[563]
refund and I hope that you do if you're
[566]
looking for some ways to spend it and it
[567]
won't be on travel right now because
[569]
we're not really all traveling at the
[570]
moment you can watch my video right here
[572]
about my everyday carry these are the
[574]
things like my suitcase my cameras and
[576]
all the stuff I travel around with now
[578]
might be a good time to up your travel
[581]
game with some new equipment as usual I
[583]
won't say goodbye cuz I'll see you in
[585]
