GenX comparison to And Just Like That | SATC reboot - YouTube
Channel: 馃巰 Black Opinionated Woman (B.O.W) 馃巰
[2]
all right welcome welcome welcome this is a聽
black opinionated woman back with another video聽聽
[8]
so this is the thing you're probably聽
wondering what is going on she's going聽聽
[13]
she is live like two days in a row so this聽
is the thing yesterday i did a video um just聽聽
[21]
giving my analysis of and just like that the um聽
the reboot to sex and the city now let me just聽聽
[28]
say this for those of you who are familiar with聽
my channel i typically talk about three topics聽聽
[33]
it's either gonna be black women black culture聽
or just being middle age so right now i'm on that聽聽
[41]
middle age kick okay so i want to talk about these聽
things so after doing my um analysis of that show聽聽
[48]
you know that we have all grown to love and聽
know intimately you know as a gen xer it hit me聽聽
[55]
you know i have my notes here and then you聽
go ahead this is what we're talking about聽聽
[60]
and just like that is kind of like a mirror聽
it is a mirror to our lives is it i don't聽聽
[68]
know so um let me see do i have my um let me聽
put this out for a second and go ahead and聽聽
[77]
all right so this was my thumbnail i felt聽
like the show was actually a reflection of gen聽聽
[84]
x because these are gen xers okay let me let聽
me go ahead and bring myself back up in this聽聽
[91]
yeah so we're gen xers oh wait that's not the聽
view i wanted don't come over here okay honey聽聽
[96]
so look this isn't the view i mean this isn't聽
what i had expected right uh don't no go that聽聽
[104]
stop go that way go go go go hurry up thank聽
you sorry i don't like for my um family to be聽聽
[111]
um live here so anyway yesterday i gave my my聽
analysis up and just like that and it hit me聽聽
[118]
the reason why it resonated so much was because i聽
think i hated it and liked it at the same time the聽聽
[124]
fact of the matter is hello my other camera view聽
so uh i was like yeah is this a reflection of gen聽聽
[130]
x um life you know we're all middle age here聽
well we're not all middle aged but most of the聽聽
[135]
people who probably view my channel is either聽
a woman she's either black or she's middle age聽聽
[141]
or all three so yeah it hit me i was like i聽
felt like i was taking body blows i was like聽聽
[149]
and i think the reason why i was feeling聽
some kind of one was because i was like okay聽聽
[154]
i think we're just pissed off it was almost like聽
how dare you right i think part of it is in the聽聽
[160]
past we enjoyed that show because it gave us like聽
an escape right like we enjoyed it there was some聽聽
[166]
some humor there was some hilarity in the show and聽
it talked about women's issues but when you fast聽聽
[172]
forward 15 20 years later it's different聽
because now we're exposing our frailties聽聽
[178]
so anyway i was just sitting here thinking聽
about like i think most of us who are gen聽聽
[182]
x is because okay look let's be honest most of聽
the people who have viewed that show was a woman聽聽
[188]
and of a particular age like a certain age group聽
so i think much of it is like now we're being聽聽
[194]
confronted with these issues especially聽
during a pandemic and i think many of us聽聽
[199]
wanted that escape and now we don't get to escape聽
but yet you can't stop watching it so let me just聽聽
[205]
um call up a couple things real quick number one聽
i think it calls out that we were having some sort聽聽
[212]
of mid-life crisis let me go ahead and put up聽
um my situation we're having a midlife crisis
[222]
i think that's what it is and if you think about聽
it um let's just talk about um let me go ahead聽聽
[227]
and see what's going on with my situation聽
so anyway for those of you who may or may聽聽
[231]
not be doing this i'm talking about um my feelings聽
about and just like that which is the reboot to um聽聽
[239]
sex in the city right so okay let聽
me just let's get on with it but聽聽
[243]
it talks i'm talking about um the聽
mid-life crisis that we're going through
[248]
yeah let me go ahead and just聽
get back to this for a second聽聽
[252]
why am i in the wrong this isn't聽
what i meant i'm in the wrong聽聽
[256]
did i pull myself out what is going on all right聽
anyway the point is we're in a mid-life crisis聽聽
[264]
we were trying to be confronted with this聽
right so anyway let's talk about it number one聽聽
[270]
what the show was doing is exposing聽
what some of our coping mechanisms are聽聽
[275]
right so you know many women in the age group聽
now keep in mind i'm 45 right many women enjoy聽聽
[282]
wine drinking in this case it's it's showcasing聽
miranda let me see if i can find a picture of聽聽
[288]
miranda before i get into my other points it聽
showcases miranda having this drinking issue聽聽
[294]
or we know that's what where they're alluding聽
to right that's that's the unforeshadowing聽聽
[300]
so yeah it's kind of like this slow walk to聽
petition right we see that she's going to聽聽
[306]
um really probably have a drinking problem and聽
that could be for a variety of reasons when you聽聽
[311]
look at her life her marriages is a disaster聽
she's not having sex her son is a cluster um聽聽
[317]
she's having like a career choice uh crisis聽
right so she's like i don't want i don't know聽聽
[323]
about this maybe i need to change what kind of聽
lawyer i'm going to be you know she's trying to聽聽
[326]
decide if she wants to be gray or if she wants聽
to go back to develop so the whole thing is like聽聽
[330]
you can tell she's dealing with a midlife crisis聽
but these are the real issues that are going on聽聽
[335]
now granted this is a fictional show but i聽
think the reason why this show like invokes聽聽
[341]
such a strong reaction was because it was like聽
it was way too much coming at us right like yo聽聽
[348]
not only was it like this toxic wokeness聽
but the fact of the matter is it exposed聽聽
[353]
all the things that we don't typically talk about聽
in midlife crisis so now you've got a woman who's聽聽
[357]
got hair coloring issues her son is a cluster her聽
husband is not a i don't know what that is the way聽聽
[364]
i don't even want to get started on the聽
whole steve situation right i'm like聽聽
[368]
we're dealing with the midlife crisis so we聽
wanted to be entertained but we realized that we聽聽
[375]
can't stay in that old space we're not a time warp聽
these women grow they learn they evolve so anyway聽聽
[382]
she's got this drinking situation and then聽
of course we're dealing with like women who聽聽
[387]
are being faced and confronted with death now聽
of course we talked about the big uh death um聽聽
[394]
in the previous uh video that i've done but in聽
middle age i think i've done other videos before聽聽
[400]
we're at that tender age where we start being聽
confronted with mortality and death people die聽聽
[407]
in our families friendships past whatever it is聽
people start having health issues see we're at聽聽
[412]
that time where we don't typically attend many uh聽
weddings and and graduations unless it's for your聽聽
[419]
children right like we're not seeing a whole lot聽
of people have babies unless we're grandparents聽聽
[425]
so we're just in this point where it's like聽
you're like i don't like what i'm doing in my job聽聽
[431]
all these things but i think that's part of reason聽
why people are just feeling some kind of way like聽聽
[436]
what in the actual is going on with this show聽
so we're being hit with all the social issues聽聽
[444]
and that we're being confronted with things聽
that we really we just wanted to be entertained聽聽
[449]
you know we didn't want to feel like well damn聽
all right so let me go on i'm going to move back聽聽
[454]
to this um i want to talk about this for a聽
second we're going to talk about parenting
[466]
okay
[469]
gen xers we were the latchkey kids right聽
let me get some of my um carbonated water聽聽
[474]
guys i am obsessed bows and bowties i'm obsessed聽
with my solar stream i love this carbonated water聽聽
[478]
you can flavor whatever so i don't have聽
to buy a whole lot of salts water anymore
[484]
so good so anyway yeah um we are gen xers聽
were the latchkey kids that have become聽聽
[494]
very obsessed with their kids and i i want to聽
let that sink in for a second because a lot of聽聽
[502]
us are doing the same things we are obsessed聽
with our kids and it's pointing it out because聽聽
[509]
i mean the children i mean obviously they have聽
to show these women they have they have um gotten聽聽
[514]
older and they have children right if you think聽
about what's going on i have this picture up here聽聽
[520]
of charlotte with her two daughters and you know聽
where i'm going with this for those of you who've聽聽
[524]
seen um the the three episodes she's got her her聽
children there they're prepping for the girl on聽聽
[532]
the left um her name is i think that's lily i聽
think which one is which i think that's lilly聽聽
[536]
and the one on the right might be rose i believe聽
that's their that that are their names you know聽聽
[541]
they're prepping for lily the one on the left to聽
have a piano recital and you know i think about聽聽
[549]
how when i have to prep my children for recitals聽
and their sports events and do you have your water聽聽
[554]
bottles do you have this you gotta make sure聽
the jerseys clean blah blah blah blah you know聽聽
[557]
you gotta get ready for the recital do you wanna聽
match as a family and i actually understood that聽聽
[563]
moment right she wanted the family to have聽
a certain look and wear these floral dresses聽聽
[568]
you know we're sitting there i'm looking at how we聽
are obsessed with our kids because we are trying聽聽
[575]
to provide them with the attention that we were聽
not provided back when we were um in our youth聽聽
[583]
so what we're doing is it's like there's that聽
um pendulum shift to try to course correct right聽聽
[590]
because as gen xers we were the latchkey聽
generations we were the ones that were like聽聽
[594]
figure it out so we didn't give that we didn't get聽
that opportunity to be emotional and sensitive and聽聽
[600]
all these other things we had to figure ish out聽
we were on we were electron devices to come up聽聽
[605]
with solutions and then now gen xers i look at聽
this picture i i get it i get it but then let聽聽
[614]
me move on let me tell you the reason why i'm聽
feeling some kind of way but it's interesting聽聽
[620]
all right clearly you know when i first saw聽
this picture i can't even make this issue聽聽
[628]
it was really interesting i was like we're being聽
hit with all this wokeness and i was like oh聽聽
[632]
okay this is the child that wants to either be a聽
boy or become trans something or just identify as聽聽
[640]
not a girl you know i figured with all聽
the pronouns and non-binary and it's聽聽
[646]
so you can see that you could tell聽
they purposefully made her like either聽聽
[651]
way they couldn't hide her her breasts or聽
anything like that maybe they could have but聽聽
[657]
you can see that's the kind of thing they were聽
trying to do look at this the daughter did not聽聽
[663]
want to wear this dress so she tried to change聽
how feminine she looked i guess by putting this聽聽
[669]
tuxedo shirt over top where am i going with this聽
you know it's interesting when i think about聽聽
[675]
what's going on and i'm going to push this to the聽
next slide here that's brady that's miranda's son聽聽
[681]
i'm going to make a point here what you see him聽
doing there is attempting to enjoy um some herbs聽聽
[691]
you know i got to be careful what i see out here聽
in these youtube streets um what i don't have聽聽
[695]
here because i thought might have been too much聽
is a picture of him engaging in sexual activity聽聽
[700]
because in this um series he's supposed to be聽
a minor where am i going with this as a gen xer聽聽
[707]
i feel like the series is calling out now i'm聽
just going to say for the record i'm not this bad聽聽
[712]
because you know i'd lean in on my children but i聽
feel like the series is calling out our parenting聽聽
[719]
and rightfully so because when i see what's going聽
on here homie is lighting up and i feel like the聽聽
[726]
series is calling out the fact that gen x parents聽
who were latch key kids who were typically not聽聽
[733]
given a ton of attention had to figure things聽
out could not engage in being emotional did聽聽
[738]
not get emotional blankets they did not get聽
participation trophies and now they're calling聽聽
[743]
out the parenting because like i said if you look聽
at what's going on here and how we indulge our聽聽
[747]
kids and everything else and this is in prep for聽
that recital so i thought it was interesting it's聽聽
[753]
calling out the parenting because a lot of gen聽
x parents indulge everything with their children聽聽
[761]
one of there was a really great scene where聽
mario cantone was talking to charlotte about聽聽
[767]
this whole um with her daughter right and she's聽
like oh she says that she's not comfortable with聽聽
[772]
being called a girl and he's like why are you even聽
paying attention to it like don't give it life聽聽
[777]
and i feel like a lot of gen xers this is what's聽
going on today that's why we got all this gender聽聽
[782]
identity and fluidity stuff so back then sometimes聽
parents at least my parents or whatever they just聽聽
[788]
called a thing a thing they're like well you're聽
going to cut it out you could do that when you聽聽
[792]
get older but while you're under my roof you're聽
going to do x y z and i get it but gen x parents聽聽
[797]
these days they're like you want to be a boy聽
even though you're a girl you can be a boy聽聽
[802]
you don't want to wear this okay that's fine there聽
was a moment when they were talking about how聽聽
[806]
um charlotte said that the girl um when she was聽
younger she claimed that she wanted to be a dog聽聽
[812]
and charlotte and her ding dong actually put a聽
bowl of water out there for her daughter now i聽聽
[819]
don't know if it's a cultural thing but as聽
a blackity black black we would have never聽聽
[824]
put a bowl of water out there so that our聽
children can pretend or practice being a dog聽聽
[833]
that is crazy to me so anyway and then聽
of course let me go back to this one聽聽
[839]
miranda for those of you who don't remember聽
who she is she's allowing her son to just let聽聽
[846]
his girlfriend spend the night at his at the聽
house what he is 18. and they have this scene聽聽
[854]
where he is getting it in with the chick and聽
they're like banging on the headboards and they're聽聽
[858]
allowing this like just because you know kids聽
are doing it doesn't mean you co-sign a behavior聽聽
[865]
so it appears i feel like the series is trolling聽
they're trolling gen x's they're calling out gen x聽聽
[872]
vx bs right they're like what's up with the crazy聽
parenting you're obsessed with your kids but you聽聽
[877]
also are overindulgent of your kids you let them聽
drink get with them lap a bowl of water as if聽聽
[883]
they're a dog you'll let them have sex in a home聽
you'll you'll let them well the the the lighting聽聽
[890]
up thing that i mean i think that just happened聽
i mean i don't think she was co-signing that聽聽
[894]
but like i no longer want to be a girl聽
like i don't like when you call me a girl聽聽
[900]
you know back in the day what they would say is聽
look if you want to do whatever it is you want to聽聽
[903]
do you could do that when you get older you're not聽
living here but while you're looking here you're聽聽
[906]
going to be these things and so i know there's聽
going to be people who are going to come for me聽聽
[910]
i get it but but this is a thing just because聽
i don't necessarily agree with certain things聽聽
[914]
doesn't mean i'm a phobe of anything so every聽
time you disagree with something people say聽聽
[918]
you're a homophobe you're a transphobe you're聽
a massage well a lot of people are misogynist聽聽
[922]
but like they'll say you're a phobe of聽
everything i'm like no i just don't agree聽聽
[926]
i feel like especially when you can see聽
where they're going in the series with the聽聽
[930]
which i i'm predicting they are i could be聽
wrong with this young lady um i just kind聽聽
[936]
of feel like the way i feel with a lot of the聽
children out here i think we have to stop over聽聽
[941]
indulging i think that if they want to make those聽
decisions let them make those decisions as adults聽聽
[945]
right now you're dealing with children who are not聽
fully formed physically emotionally mentally right聽聽
[953]
why would you add to that confusion聽
they'll clearly show a confusion
[960]
i don't know anyway i just feel like ultimately聽
and just like that let me go back to my situation聽聽
[969]
show this i think what they have done is i think聽
actually what they're doing is they're exposing聽聽
[974]
gen x and you know gen x which typically is the聽
forgotten generation i think what they're doing聽聽
[981]
is they are exposing the the gen x issues and聽
stuff that we typically don't talk about the fact聽聽
[986]
of the matter is gen x is um in middle age and聽
gen x is going through midlife crisis can let me聽聽
[994]
just make it all about me again because you know聽
i was talking about this little spot right here聽聽
[998]
because i swear i'm going bald you know so these聽
are the kind of things that we deal with in gen x聽聽
[1002]
this is the kind of thing we're聽
dealing with mid-life crises聽聽
[1006]
our obsession with our children children who are聽
now trying to change identity i'm not down for聽聽
[1013]
that i'm like you know what when you are older聽
if you want to make any sort of transitions or聽聽
[1018]
whatever it is that you want to go by you can聽
do that as an adult what i will not do as your聽聽
[1021]
parent my job is to parent you i'm not going to聽
indulge that and i think that's what this series聽聽
[1027]
is calling out our over indulging of our children聽
well we know that they're going to have sex
[1036]
just let him do it here
[1040]
i'm like where was this child's parent this girl聽
why whose parent would like their children to聽聽
[1046]
spend a night at another family's home because聽
the boyfriend's there what kind of significance聽聽
[1055]
oh my goodness anyway i think there's聽
more that i wanted to say about this um聽聽
[1062]
i just want to go back real quick to miranda聽
i will say let me let me get back to miranda聽聽
[1070]
all right this here i kind of got this though聽
you know this is a beautiful woman i love how聽聽
[1075]
they have her hair styled here i love how they're聽
letting her be gray and if she goes back to being聽聽
[1081]
red i'm okay with it too but she i think she's聽
the one okay you know i'm sorry i know i keep聽聽
[1087]
switching guys um and gals this looks like it聽
could be a wig but i i just like how for her聽聽
[1096]
they are it's so cool what they did they did with聽
her because they're like they're showing yeah聽聽
[1101]
she's beautiful but she's embracing her age聽
whereas charlotte that's the person who's聽聽
[1106]
on the right she's trying to remain the same聽
these are all things we deal with in midlife聽聽
[1111]
crisis she's trying to look exactly the way she聽
did you know 10 15 20 however many years ago聽聽
[1118]
anyway i'll say this and let me just wrap it up聽
this show is trolling gen x we have been trolled聽聽
[1128]
so it's like i'm like irritated with with聽
a lot of the things that's going on but聽聽
[1133]
i can't stop watching i don't know聽
you need to let me know what you think聽聽
[1138]
everyone look let me know what you聽
think let me know what you think
[1143]
is this show trolling us oh jeez i let me聽
go back here christmas in the background聽聽
[1153]
i think we're being trolled let me know your聽
thoughts put them down in the comments if you um聽聽
[1159]
have anything you want to share with me聽
hopefully you'll use hashtag so that i聽聽
[1163]
know that it's like a comment actually i聽
will notice the comment if it's in there聽聽
[1167]
but anyway all right well look let me get on聽
out of here because my son has a basketball game聽聽
[1173]
that he needs to prepare for um get dressed聽
and everything for so i'm going to head on聽聽
[1178]
out how do i get out of here i always check this聽
out thanks for listening guys see you next time
