Day in the Life in a Japanese Manga Artist Shared House - YouTube

Channel: unknown

[0]
this is a day in the life of a japanese
[1]
manga artist living in a share house
[5]
[Music]
[25]
[Music]
[28]
this is nobi 25 years old living in the
[31]
outskirts of tokyo and he's just waking
[33]
up
[34]
he's originally from hiroshima but now
[36]
living in this unique shared house
[38]
reserved for only aspiring mangaka aka
[41]
manga artist he lives with three other
[43]
mangaka under the special program called
[45]
tokiwaso project which provides a living
[47]
space in addition to support to help
[49]
develop a manga artist's career
[52]
wow he's mixing natto mozugu seaweed and
[55]
egg kind of a unique japanese quick but
[57]
healthy meal
[59]
do you eat this often
[62]
you're so healthy
[69]
[Music]
[82]
[Music]
[84]
despite not really drawing as a kid he
[86]
started creating manga a style of
[88]
japanese comic books six years ago under
[90]
the name nobukitaro he enrolled in
[92]
anabuki design college in hiroshima
[94]
prefecture and studied manga and
[95]
illustration for two years eventually
[97]
moving to tokyo to pursue his career as
[99]
a mangaka and recently received the
[101]
bi-annual award for upcoming mangaka
[103]
from chiba tetsuya the creator of the
[105]
popular manga ashinojo
[108]
good morning everyone i am back with
[110]
another day in the life a lot of you
[111]
asked me to do another manga artist so
[114]
here we are but this time i'm going to
[116]
be following an aspiring manga artist
[118]
living in a shared house let's go see
[120]
what nobi is doing right now so i just
[122]
made it into the share house and nobody
[124]
should be on the second floor
[126]
[Music]
[141]
he has a deadline in one week for his
[143]
first ever publisher paid yomikiri a
[145]
complete manga story that ends in one
[147]
episode and he's still working on the
[149]
story so it makes sense why he's just a
[150]
bit stressed how far are you from
[152]
finishing
[160]
he says that one of the most challenging
[162]
and time-consuming aspects for him is
[164]
building the actual story for his manga
[166]
it usually requires many redrafts and
[168]
endless adjustments to get it flowing
[169]
perfectly for example he said it took
[171]
him two months to create his last manga
[173]
what are you doing now
[183]
in the mornings he feels that his mind
[184]
is most clear so he typically starts his
[186]
day creating manga but to ensure he
[188]
works on all aspects of his craft
[190]
throughout the day he maintains a
[191]
schedule to keep on track and motivated
[193]
and this morning it seems like he's
[195]
starting to work on his story plot for
[196]
his yomikiri so let me quickly explain
[198]
what happens during the manga creation
[200]
process after finishing the plot he'll
[202]
work on the nemu a rough drawing layout
[204]
plan for his yomi kitty which he needs
[205]
to produce for his editor it looks like
[207]
a bigger version of these tiny tiles
[209]
with a lot more detail after getting
[211]
feedback nobody has to repeat this
[212]
process several times until the editor
[214]
approves the content at which point
[216]
he'll start working on his genko the
[218]
final manuscript that gets submitted to
[219]
the editor before publishing
[222]
he's typing random words what's that
[243]
[Music]
[244]
so it looks like nobody's gonna be doing
[246]
this for a while so while he's doing
[248]
that let's do what we do and explore
[250]
this place
[252]
okay so let's see what's upstairs oh wow
[255]
look at this room
[259]
so apparently this is a free room it has
[261]
everything you need it has a bed it has
[263]
a desk and a place to put your clothes
[265]
okay so let's see if anyone is in this
[267]
room
[270]
oh that's one of his housemates can i
[271]
bother you for a sec
[273]
what are you doing right now
[316]
and cool these are their toilets with
[318]
that typical old-school japanese home
[320]
styling fairly clean for a shared house
[324]
i guess nobody's done working on his
[325]
manga for now and it seems like he's
[327]
going outside
[333]
[Music]
[345]
as a manga artist there's a constant
[346]
level of creative output required so
[348]
nobody thinks it's important to get out
[350]
once in a while to take inspiration from
[352]
new experiences
[355]
oh he switches backpack to the front a
[357]
typical show of courtesy in japan when
[359]
riding trains or when in other crowded
[361]
areas
[362]
nice he found a senpai aka mangaka
[365]
friend who's more experienced today they
[367]
decided to go to akihabara because
[369]
nobody wanted to specifically take some
[370]
photos here to use as background images
[372]
for his manga apparently they don't
[374]
necessarily need to draw all of their
[375]
backgrounds but instead use photos and
[377]
edit it in a manga production software
[379]
like clip studio nobi what do you look
[381]
for when taking photos
[388]
[Applause]
[392]
of
[405]
foreign
[410]
in the past manga was strictly drawn
[412]
with paper and ink but in this new
[414]
digital age electronic tablets and pcs
[416]
are becoming more and more the standard
[417]
which is helping artists today produce
[419]
content more quickly and efficiently
[422]
[Music]
[425]
it's lunchtime it seems that they've
[427]
decided to pick up some wagyu burgers
[429]
and find a place to eat outside so how
[431]
did you guys meet
[445]
he says that a publisher was looking for
[447]
an artist on their social media who
[449]
could create a manga centered around
[450]
fencing nobody spotted it and told him
[452]
about it
[456]
when did you decide to become a manga
[463]
what
[471]
[Music]
[479]
one of the main reasons why nobody asked
[481]
to meet a senpai today is he wanted to
[482]
get some advice about the plot direction
[484]
for his manga so what do you think
[486]
[Music]
[488]
is
[513]
it's understandable that he wants to
[515]
start his career with credibility now
[517]
equipped with the senpai sage advice
[519]
nobody has regained much of its focus
[522]
what are you going to do now
[532]
right
[536]
so nobody found this job through his
[537]
friend on social media and now he works
[539]
for the company remotely and sometimes
[541]
at their office he usually works about
[542]
three to four hours when he works from
[544]
home but since he needs to work on his
[545]
name today he's only gonna work for
[547]
about an hour the average starting manga
[548]
artist's annual income in japan is
[550]
around two to four million yen about 17
[552]
to 35 000 us dollars so to supplement
[554]
living costs that many take on part-time
[556]
or assistant jobs
[558]
are you done
[559]
foreign
[561]
[Music]
[567]
[Music]
[575]
he's using a welcome screen tablet
[577]
apparently wacom is used by many manga
[580]
artists in japan and is one of the most
[581]
popular brands for its ease of use and
[583]
precise drawing tools oh and that's his
[585]
shortcut keyboard
[588]
cool where are you going noby
[593]
[Music]
[598]
now he has his take amanda a counseling
[600]
meeting with an advisor from the
[601]
tokiwaso program scheduled regularly to
[604]
discuss how his manga is developing in
[606]
addition to how he's living in the
[607]
shared house in fact there are many
[609]
young artists living in tokiwaso's
[611]
shared houses throughout tokyo and often
[613]
mangaka starting a new career face many
[614]
roadblocks so advisors visit to share
[616]
and guide all of them in industry
[618]
knowledge and know-how so that the
[619]
artists have as many tools as possible
[621]
to help continue them on their path and
[622]
to increase their chances of success
[632]
[Music]
[635]
when nobody hits a creative wall with
[636]
the stories or simply needs to get some
[637]
fresh air he takes a walk along the
[639]
river by his house novi so how's your
[641]
story coming along now
[651]
by the way are there any new ways to
[653]
earn income aside from going through
[654]
publishers
[659]
he says there are so many types of
[661]
digital manga and ebooks available these
[663]
days it's giving way to ebook agents
[665]
that will help release a mangaka's work
[666]
to hundreds of platforms for a fee at
[668]
the same time this new digital era has
[670]
also given opportunity to mangaka in
[672]
niche markets like dark manga that would
[674]
have never been approved by established
[676]
publishers
[680]
oh he's back on his tablet
[683]
what are you doing now
[690]
in the past to build any sort of career
[691]
as a mangaka an artist's only option was
[693]
to work with a publisher to earn a
[695]
living which required them to do a
[697]
walk-in interview or get recognized by
[698]
winning an award but this practice has
[700]
slightly changed in japan as social
[702]
media has provided mangaka alternative
[704]
ways to promote and earn a living with
[705]
their manga aspiring mangaka can now be
[708]
discovered online and some can even earn
[710]
a living by publishing their manga on
[711]
various online platforms but working
[713]
with a publisher even to this day
[715]
remains a prudent path to a lucrative
[717]
career so what did you upload
[724]
so nobody's been involved with an online
[726]
group of manga artists for the last two
[728]
years where every saturday a topic is
[730]
announced and each member is required to
[731]
create their own two page manga when
[733]
he's done with it he posted on twitter
[734]
and pixiv which is the largest social
[736]
media platform for manga artists and
[738]
illustrators in japan he makes a point
[740]
to update his fanbox which is like a
[742]
blog space every day by the way do you
[744]
think going to school to learn about
[745]
manga gave you an advantage
[752]
he says that the skills he learned at
[753]
school in two years can probably be
[754]
learned in half a year working as a
[756]
mangaka assistant but the largest
[757]
advantage was the opportunity to meet
[759]
other aspiring mangaka his road wasn't
[761]
easy though as he realized that many of
[763]
the other students were more talented
[764]
than him so after graduating he
[766]
realistically took a job working at an
[768]
electronic store for three years but
[770]
later seeing one of his younger
[772]
classmates get their manga published
[773]
reignited his passion to re-pursue his
[775]
mangaka career
[777]
[Music]
[782]
oh i guess he's cooking his own dinner
[784]
now
[786]
and there's his housemate i guess he got
[789]
some udon from matsuya smells so good
[792]
nobody's fairly close to his housemates
[794]
so when there's a chance they eat
[795]
together and naturally they often
[797]
discuss manga
[800]
right now nobody's showing him one of
[802]
his latest manga to get his feedback
[804]
it's one of the benefits of living with
[805]
other manga artists nobi says that he
[807]
appreciates living in an environment
[808]
where others share a common love for
[810]
manga while also having a different
[811]
perspective in life
[824]
if
[829]
now that he's bathed it's time to
[830]
refocus on the plot he's been struggling
[832]
with all day
[833]
be honest do you think he can finish the
[835]
storyline
[850]
so it looks like nobody will be doing
[851]
this the rest of the night as he has to
[853]
finish this nemu by the end of the week
[855]
he'll probably go to sleep later tonight
[857]
at midnight and then after that who
[858]
knows he has the rest of the week but
[860]
that's pretty much a day in the life of
[861]
a japanese mangaka living at a share
[863]
house let me know what you thought in
[865]
the comments and if you guys want to see
[866]
more of these videos or anything related
[868]
to japan hit that subscribe button and
[869]
the bell button and i'll catch you guys
[870]
