Chainlink Explained: What is Chainlink Crypto? - YouTube

In the last 2 years, Chainlink has become聽 one of the most popular projects in the聽聽
[4]
entire crypto ecosystem, with a large聽 community of followers that hodl the聽聽
[8]
native LINK token in much the same way聽 that preppers hodl canned vegetables.
[13]
But what problem does Chainlink solve,聽 and how does it work? What鈥檚 the purpose聽聽
[17]
of the Chainlink token LINK? Join us as we聽 take a closer look and answer the question:
[22]
What is Chainlink?
[28]
Arguably the most game-changing聽 innovation in the crypto space,聽聽
[31]
after the creation of Bitcoin, has to聽 be the development of smart contracts.聽聽
[36]
Smart contracts were originally proposed by聽 Ethereum鈥檚 legendary founder and programmer聽聽
[41]
Vitalik Buterin and are basically lines of code聽 that allow two parties to execute an agreement聽聽
[46]
without the need of a third party. So picture聽 selling your house to somebody that you鈥檝e never聽聽
[52]
met, with no real estate agent in the middle, just聽 a trusty algorithm that both parties can rely on.
[58]
But most smart contract platforms are isolated聽 on individual blockchains and unable to connect聽聽
[63]
with external data feeds. This would make smart聽 contracts unable to react to real world events,聽聽
[68]
for example, when a goal scored in a football聽 match that changes the odds on a betting platform.
[74]
Chainlink solves this issue with its network of聽 decentralized data providers, otherwise known聽聽
[78]
as oracles. This continuous feed of live data聽 comes from multiple sources that are spread all聽聽
[84]
around the world, making it more reliable. To聽 take part in the network, the data providers聽聽
[90]
are required to stake the platform鈥檚 native LINK聽 token, and from that point they can earn rewards聽聽
[95]
by providing accurate information or have their聽 stake slashed if they send false information.聽
[101]
This incentivizes cooperation and keeps聽 the network secure from bad actors.
[106]
As more and more smart contract platforms聽 go live on their respective blockchains,聽聽
[110]
Chainlink and other smaller oracle providers,聽 like Band Protocol, DIA and Tellor,聽聽
[114]
should find their services very much聽 in demand. Within the oracle space,聽聽
[119]
Chainlink has the benefit of first-mover聽 advantage and larger amounts of funding.
[125]
The popularity of the project聽 among investors comes from the聽聽
[128]
huge amount of working partners聽 that Chainlink has already amassed.聽聽
[131]
Almost every Ethereum-based DeFi project, from聽 Aave to Yearn Finance, relies on Chainlink鈥檚聽聽
[138]
supply of live prices in order to do things聽 like adjust their lending and borrowing rates.
[142]
Chainlink is also a key component聽 of many blockchain platforms,聽聽
[146]
including industry movers Binance and Polkadot.
[149]
This impressive list of partnerships also聽 extends outside the blockchain world,聽聽
[153]
as Chainlink boasts business relationships聽 with Swift, Google Cloud and Intel.
[159]
A strategic purchase of DECO, a project聽 that improves how data is sent securely聽聽
[163]
over the internet, suggests that Chainlink is聽 interested in providing data solutions for large,聽聽
[169]
private enterprises that want a guarantee of聽 protection for potential confidential data.聽聽
[175]
If it achieves this, Chainlink could be one of聽 the first blockchain start-ups that achieves聽聽
[179]
true mainstream adoption in the corporate world.
[183]
Despite all of the positive聽 developments around the project,聽聽
[186]
Chainlink has recently聽 received some negative press.
[189]
The project faced accusations of聽 centralization when it was pointed聽聽
[192]
out that just 125 wallets control聽 80% of the total link supply.
[198]
On the surface, this suggests that the聽 integrity of the network could be manipulated聽聽
[202]
by a relatively small group of token聽 holders. But Upon closer inspection,聽聽
[206]
35% of this wealth is held in one wallet聽 from which node operators are compensated,聽聽
[212]
so over time, it should continue聽 to be more widely distributed.
[215]
A further 25% of tokens belong to聽 the Chainlink team, and are slated聽聽
[220]
to be used as funding for development, which聽 should benefit the platform in the long run.
[225]
Another factor to consider is that,聽 unlike with many other projects,聽聽
[228]
Chainlink鈥檚 native token is not used for聽 governance, so a concentration of funds聽聽
[232]
in fewer wallets does not necessarily mean聽 that the project is centralized. In fact,聽聽
[238]
each individual network in the Chainlink ecosystem聽 is free to implement its own governance scheme.
