[1]
This module contains information regarding the Business major curriculum and helpful
[6]
resources when deciding what specialization you may like to pursue.
[10]
The Business major is broken into two parts: the Business core classes, and then the specialization
[16]
classes. Regardless of your specialization, all Business major students must take all
[21]
of the Business core classes. Business core classes are introductory courses in the various
[26]
areas of Business. Students will also complete their specialization classes. There are 12
[32]
different specializations offered in Fisher, and each student chooses the one they wish
[36]
to pursue. Let's talk about each of these portions in turn.
[41]
Examples of Business core classes are: Business Skills and Environments; Business Law, Intro
[47]
to International Business; Intro to Finance; Intro to Marketing; Intro to Logistics; Intro
[54]
to Operations Management; Organizational Behavior; and finally, a senior capstone course called
[60]
Strategy Management. These courses are typically taken during a student's junior and senior
[65]
years. Some of the Business core classes are prerequisites to specialization courses, so
[71]
it锟絪 important that you work closely with an academic advisor and use the resources
[75]
available online to plan your classes appropriately.
[79]
As previously mentioned, there are currently 12 Fisher specializations to choose from.
[85]
Some of the specializations are more competitive to get into than others; however, the competitive
[90]
admission specializations vary each application cycle, so be sure to check with a Fisher advisor
[95]
on the latest information.
[97]
The twelve specializations are: Accounting, Economics, Finance, Human Resources, Information
[105]
Systems, Insurance, International Business, Logistics, Marketing, Operations Management,
[113]
Real Estate, and a Special Area specialization in Aviation Management. If a student wants
[119]
to complete their Business degree on a regional campus, there is the Regional BSBA Option.
[124]
If you're interested in that option, please contact a Fisher advisor for more details.
[131]
On the slide next to each specialization, you can see the minimum number of semesters
[135]
it takes to complete that specialization due to the sequencing of the specialization courses.
[141]
The number of semesters listed does not include the prerequisite Business core classes, and
[146]
time to graduation may be longer than what is listed. Contact a Fisher advisor to review
[151]
your individual plan for graduation.
[154]
This PowerPoint does not go into detail on each specialization, but we will discuss resources
[160]
for you to utilize when exploring what specialization might be best for you.
[164]
There are several resources available to help you explore Fisher's specializations.
[170]
First, there are information sheets available online for your perusal. These pages were
[175]
designed by Fisher's Office of Career Management to help you explore the Fisher specializations.
[181]
To locate these information sheets, access the link posted in this Carmen module. This
[187]
link will lead you to one-page documents defining what a specific field is, what preparation
[192]
is needed to succeed in that specialization, potential careers and job titles a student
[197]
could have, a sampling of companies who recruit and hire Fisher students for that specialization,
[204]
and average starting salaries for both internship and full-time positions.
[208]
Second, there are some PowerPoint presentations created to help walk you through a particular
[214]
specialization. To locate these presentations, access the link posted in this Carmen module.
[219]
Third, the Office of Career Management also has career coaches available to speak with
[224]
students about the differing specializations.
[228]
Once you have decided on a specialization, there are curriculum sheets, (also called
[233]
a bingo sheet, check sheet, or advising sheet), available online for each specialization.
[240]
These pages outline what classes you need to complete for a particular specialization.
[245]
They also detail the prerequisite structure of the specialization courses so you know
[249]
what order to take your classes in. To locate these pages, access the link posted in this
[254]
Carmen module. Once on the webpage, click on whatever specialization you're interested
[259]
in researching. If you need help reading or interpreting your specialization advising
[264]
sheet, contact a Fisher advisor for assistance.
[267]
This concludes the Business Major module. Please proceed to the final module, titled
[272]
"Support and Resources" to complete the course!
