[6]
if
[7]
you are a logic user and you've ever had
[10]
to
[10]
edit drums you might be wondering
[14]
why does flex time suck so bad and this
[17]
is a great question because logic just
[20]
hasn't
[21]
caught up to pro tools when it comes to
[24]
drum
[24]
editing and over the years i've tried
[27]
almost
[28]
every method out there from just
[30]
straight up using
[31]
flex time to emulating a pro tools
[34]
workflow in logic to just manually
[38]
editing the drums which i still do
[41]
occasionally
[42]
if bands request it but we all know that
[46]
today most bands want tightly edited
[49]
and perfect drums but it's kind of hard
[52]
to do this
[52]
in logic but luckily for you i have
[56]
sort of a new way to edit drums that
[59]
does involve using a little bit of flex
[62]
time
[63]
but it doesn't involve messing around
[65]
with transient markers
[67]
and all the painful processes that
[70]
are involved in flex time and this
[73]
process has
[74]
also allowed me to cut my drum editing
[78]
time
[78]
in half so that i can move on to the fun
[81]
stuff
[82]
and now i'm no longer pulling my hair
[85]
out
[86]
trying to get flex time to work the way
[89]
that i think it should
[90]
now let's hop in the daw and i'll show
[92]
you what i do
[94]
when it comes time for drum editing
[97]
in front of us we have some drums that
[100]
were recorded about a week ago and i've
[101]
kind of
[102]
saved them so that i could make this
[104]
video so
[105]
first of all let's just go over the
[106]
basics that most of you probably know
[109]
so when we want to edit drums we want to
[112]
make sure they're all in the same group
[114]
here so
[115]
all these tracks are in the drums group
[118]
and
[119]
if i open up the group settings we can
[122]
see that
[123]
editing and quantize locked is
[126]
selected which needs to be selected for
[129]
when you're doing any type of drum
[132]
editing that means when we move one
[133]
track we move the rest of them
[135]
they all kind of follow along with the
[138]
track that we're moving
[139]
if we were just gonna use flex time to
[142]
edit these drums we would
[143]
of course turn on flex time
[147]
for all of the drum tracks
[150]
and select slicing that's the best
[153]
method for editing drums
[156]
and the thing here is this is where it
[159]
gets a little bit
[160]
time consuming what someone would
[162]
normally do here
[163]
is select the drums that we want to use
[167]
for editing
[168]
which in a lot of cases is the kick and
[171]
snare so we would turn
[172]
off the the q for all of the tracks that
[176]
we don't want to edit by
[177]
so let's just edit by the kick in so
[180]
we'll take off the kick out
[182]
and then we'll use the snare top so
[184]
we'll leave the q on for that
[187]
and then we'll turn the the q off for
[190]
the rest of the tracks now this means
[193]
that we are going to use the snare top
[196]
and the kick
[197]
in to edit so this would mean
[200]
that now we should only have transient
[203]
markers
[203]
for the kick in the snare and those
[206]
transient markers we could then move
[208]
to wherever we want to put the drummer
[210]
on beat
[211]
but as we know that's not the case the
[214]
logic algorithm picks up a lot of
[217]
the other transients from the rest of
[220]
the drum kit
[221]
which kind of stinks so in order for us
[224]
to ensure that we only have the
[226]
transient markers we need
[229]
we would need to then go through the
[231]
kick in and snare top
[233]
track to ensure that we're not picking
[237]
up any other transients and the way
[239]
that's usually done is you
[240]
double click on one of the tracks and
[242]
you bring up the file editor
[244]
and then you can use this this minus
[247]
button to
[248]
get rid of some of the transients that
[250]
aren't really snare hits
[253]
and you can also use the eraser tool to
[256]
get rid of some of these because
[258]
as we know some of these aren't snare
[259]
hits these are you know kick or
[261]
or hi-hat whatever they may be
[264]
but we would just want the snare hits
[267]
and it's just a
[268]
pain to scrub through this and remove
[272]
all the false transients so
[275]
instead of doing that we're going to
[278]
just turn off
[279]
flex time and what i'm going to do is
[282]
i'm going to make a copy of this kick
[284]
and snare track and we're going to
[288]
throw in some triggers so that's one
[290]
thing you do need
[291]
some type of trigger program to
[294]
edit this way so i'm actually going to
[296]
use the kick
[297]
out for my guide for our kick
[300]
because that microphone for whatever
[303]
reason works
[304]
better with the slate trigger program so
[307]
what i'm going to do is i'm going to
[308]
turn off groups for
[310]
the kick out and just copy this
[314]
and then we're just going to make a new
[316]
track
[318]
and then i'm going to paste this down
[320]
here
[323]
and i'm gonna just turn groups back
[326]
on for that kick out microphone because
[329]
we still want it to be in the group
[331]
and then i'm gonna do the same thing
[334]
with
[334]
the snare top so i will turn off groups
[340]
copy it make a new track
[345]
and just paste that in its own track
[349]
so now i'll just name these kick guide
[354]
and then snare guide
[358]
so now i'm just going to add some
[360]
samples to these tracks so i'm just
[362]
going to throw on trigger 2
[365]
and it really doesn't matter what sample
[368]
you choose because these actually aren't
[370]
going to be in the recording so i'll
[371]
just
[372]
pick any kick drum
[377]
and throw it in there
[382]
and make sure it's actually reacting
[395]
there we go and then we'll do the same
[397]
for the snare drum
[405]
and again doesn't really matter what you
[408]
use here
[424]
all right so we should be good now
[428]
and now what we're going to do is
[430]
actually
[431]
bounce these tracks as wave files so i'm
[434]
going to take this
[434]
kick guide and i'm going to say
[438]
bounce regions in place
[445]
and then now we can get rid of the kick
[447]
guide track that we had and we'll do
[449]
this
[450]
the same for the snare guide so we'll
[452]
just bounce this in place
[461]
and again we can get rid of our snare
[463]
guide
[465]
now we're left with just two sample
[468]
tracks here
[471]
and these are going to be what we use to
[474]
edit by
[475]
so now we can actually add these two
[478]
tracks that we've created to the drum
[480]
group
[482]
and then we can just use these for the
[485]
queue so we just turned the queue on for
[487]
the two tracks that were just
[489]
created and if we go to flex time now
[494]
like slicing
[495]
[Music]
[499]
now we actually only have transient
[503]
markers
[504]
where the kick and the snare should be
[507]
and now it's kind of up to you how you
[509]
want to do things you can
[511]
easily go through and manually move
[514]
these
[514]
to where they should be if they're not
[517]
on time
[518]
or you can come up and quantize
[522]
everything but if you do quantize you're
[525]
probably going to have to go back
[527]
and make sure everything's where it
[529]
should be as we know when we
[530]
quantize tracks and logic logic doesn't
[534]
always
[534]
put them in the right spot but just for
[537]
this purpose i'm going to
[538]
select 16th note and
[541]
all of our drums are going to be
[543]
quantized now and
[545]
all of our actual drums will follow
[549]
these sample tracks and now just to
[552]
show you if we mute these sample tracks
[555]
that
[556]
we don't really want in our music
[558]
they're just the guys
[559]
and we listen back everything should be
[562]
pretty close
[576]
[Music]
[577]
and for that small section of the song
[580]
everything is perfectly on beat but
[583]
you can bet that somewhere in this song
[586]
logic did make a mistake that's why i
[588]
say
[589]
you probably will have to go through and
[591]
double check to make sure
[592]
no beats were moved incorrectly
[595]
but this is a pretty fast
[599]
process for drum editing and if we have
[601]
to
[602]
go in and take out transient markers and
[605]
double check
[606]
logic's work ahead of time it just takes
[608]
way too long this
[609]
just speeds up the process and we're
[612]
just
[613]
positive that we only have transient
[615]
markers
[616]
where the kick and the snare are
[619]
actually hitting
[620]
so there you go just throw in some
[622]
samples ahead of time
[624]
and use those as your guide tracks and
[626]
it's going to make your job a lot easier
[629]
that's about it if you have any
[631]
questions on this
[633]
process be sure to reach out or if you
[635]
have another way you like to do things
[637]
that works well let me know i'd sure
