200 pounds is that our final guess that
[1]
is yes okay it costs zero pounds what
[10]
[Music]
[12]
hey guys welcome back to the girl gone
[14]
london channel if you're new here my
[15]
name is caitlin i'm an american who's
[17]
lived in the uk for almost 10 years
[19]
except now i'm in america and this is my
[21]
best friend emily in this video you guys
[23]
wanted me to get my friends and family's
[25]
reactions to certain like facts about
[28]
the uk or things about the uk that are
[30]
different from the us so emily has been
[33]
to the uk a few times to visit me um and
[36]
is pretty well up on things i've come up
[38]
with some questions that i'm gonna ask
[40]
and she is going to react to different
[42]
things about the uk and we're just gonna
[44]
have a discussion about some of the
[46]
differences so
[48]
so
[49]
um okay the first question
[52]
do you know how many different nations
[55]
make up the uk
[57]
now i get in trouble for this because
[58]
i'm not even sure if you call them
[59]
nations or country i mean it's countries
[61]
like how many different countries make
[63]
up the uk oh gosh
[66]
i
[68]
you can do it i'm gonna expose myself
[70]
okay
[71]
i
[72]
okay what's like the first country that
[74]
you've been to england okay okay what's
[76]
the next one scotland okay okay what's
[79]
the other one that's on the same
[81]
landmass that we didn't go to ireland
[85]
whales will and the fourth one is
[91]
northern ireland northern ireland oh wow
[94]
my geography skills are coming out there
[96]
you go watch out
[99]
but if any of you british people tried
[100]
to name the american states i bet you
[102]
could
[103]
um okay how much do you think it costs
[106]
for an ambulance ride in the uk
[109]
oh wow
[110]
in pounds in pounds okay
[117]
part of me wants to say like
[121]
200 pounds i don't know okay 200 pounds
[124]
is that our final guess that is yes okay
[127]
it costs zero pounds what
[129]
yeah because at the nhs i you don't have
[131]
to pay for an ambulance right i mean
[133]
here
[134]
we just choose to use our own cars like
[136]
you could have your arm chopped off
[138]
we're like no we got it i'll take the
[139]
honda like yeah because an ambulance
[141]
ride costs so much here yeah i think i
[143]
couldn't even give you a ballpark
[144]
because it's i think it's like in the
[146]
thousands yeah
[147]
so yeah just go free i mean you pay for
[149]
it obviously at some point right but but
[151]
you don't pay like per ambulance ride
[153]
right zero pounds wow there you go first
[157]
that's actually shocked that's we used
[159]
to have lots of american students when i
[161]
used to have a different job who would
[162]
be like the same thing yeah i'm not
[164]
going to the hospital and we're like why
[166]
and they're like because i don't i can't
[167]
afford it yeah like
[169]
it's free it's free the point of the nhs
[172]
yeah
[173]
next question
[175]
how
[176]
much do you think income tax like the
[178]
first income tax
[179]
percentage is
[181]
so there's a certain percentage it's
[183]
like zero percent if you make like under
[185]
11 000 pounds but like the first once
[187]
you start earning
[188]
what percentage of is income tax
[193]
in percent numbers
[195]
oh god
[198]
um
[205]
just saying guess maybe
[207]
five percent i don't know okay the guess
[209]
is five percent yes it's twenty percent
[211]
okay it's totally off
[214]
twenty percent is the first like income
[216]
tax bracket dang but that stuff goes
[218]
towards things like the energy right
[221]
what is income tax here we're in florida
[223]
do you even know florida doesn't have
[225]
income tax does it i don't think so
[226]
california does i think so do you pick
[229]
what do you pay any like what do you pay
[231]
in
[232]
like sales tax yeah like i think seven
[235]
five percent seven percent sales tax i
[237]
think something around that but then do
[239]
you keep all of the money that you're
[241]
bought like your employee your your
[243]
employer
[244]
gives you
[246]
no because some of it comes out in like
[247]
social security social security and
[248]
stuff okay yeah but i don't think
[250]
florida has an income tax right i don't
[252]
think so okay so florida zero
[255]
uk
[256]
20 20 as the first here i was thinking
[259]
five starting point
[260]
okay next question how many sick days
[264]
do you think you get in the uk
[266]
oh gosh and this is different how many
[269]
sick days do you get do you know
[272]
well ours is kind of weird because we
[274]
kind of combine it with our holiday time
[276]
okay so we get technically
[279]
three weeks of
[281]
pto that we could use when we're sick or
[283]
if we're going to the uk so okay um
[286]
but i'm thinking you guys would probably
[288]
get
[290]
maybe
[291]
like two weeks of sick time
[293]
okay it's basically unlimited because if
[295]
you're sick then they're not gonna make
[297]
you
[298]
yeah that
[300]
shocks me so that would never happen the
[302]
next question is going to be about
[305]
paid time off or what they would call
[306]
annual leave
[308]
but for the most part if you're ill
[310]
what they call being sick because being
[312]
sick do you know what being sick means
[313]
in the uk what
[315]
it means throwing up
[317]
so i'm all like i'm always like i i've
[320]
i've been sick and i think they mean a
[321]
lot of people will use that to be like
[323]
oh i've thrown up americans don't say we
[325]
say like sick to mean the same thing as
[328]
ill which is what british people say um
[331]
but yeah like it doesn't take away from
[333]
your vacation time if you're sick
[336]
isn't that crazy that's crazy that i
[337]
know very different from how we don't
[339]
you want to move to the beach i mean
[341]
you could get the flu and you still have
[343]
to be pranking out those emails so
[346]
okay the next question is how many
[348]
vacation days do you think
[351]
we get in the uk
[353]
like in days and it's mandated by the
[356]
government
[359]
um
[360]
maybe like
[363]
20 days a year good guess closer so it's
[367]
28 days
[368]
that can include bank holidays like
[370]
there's like eight of them or something
[372]
so they can tell you that you have to
[374]
like take christmas off and that counts
[376]
towards the 28th so it basically for
[378]
most people works out to four weeks ish
[381]
four to five weeks wow that's as minimum
[384]
yeah minimum that's crazy that we're
[387]
lucky if we get maybe a week here yeah
[390]
exactly you saying three weeks i was
[391]
like wow that's sick
[394]
so
[395]
so
[397]
yeah
[398]
okay next question how many days or
[401]
weeks do you think
[402]
a pregnant woman could get of maternity
[405]
leave in the
[406]
uk
[408]
um
[412]
maybe
[415]
i'm just gonna say maybe four weeks
[420]
really okay um six weeks higher
[423]
times it by like 10.
[425]
52 weeks a whole year a whole year a
[428]
whole year
[429]
so it's not all paid it's like some of
[431]
it's paid and smooth it depends on if
[433]
you've been employed somewhere
[435]
like there's different situations but
[437]
it's a full year
[438]
a full year
[440]
how many maternity days are mandated in
[442]
the u.s
[443]
zero days yeah i think it's one of the
[445]
only countries in the world that doesn't
[446]
have like
[448]
mandated time like your employer gets to
[450]
decide yeah i mean yeah a full year what
[454]
do you think about that i think that is
[456]
shocking that is like
[458]
we're fending for ourselves like good
[460]
luck trying to take the baby to work
[463]
yeah have them become the new intern
[466]
it's crazy yeah that's crazy to me
[468]
okay
[469]
final two
[471]
jaywalking
[473]
okay
[474]
legal do you do it
[476]
legal or illegal in the uk
[479]
to answer your first question i do but
[481]
not
[483]
i'm happy myself um
[486]
in the uk i feel like it is legal there
[489]
though it is
[491]
you won't get in trouble for jaywalking
[493]
because and they think it's weird that
[495]
america really
[496]
can't cross the street where they want i
[498]
think because we we were in london doing
[500]
something and everyone just started
[501]
going like you know there's no time to
[504]
waste you gotta hustle so yeah but in
[506]
america it's very much like you're
[508]
looked at like
[510]
that crazy person don't cross unless
[512]
don't do anything like you're at a
[513]
crossing yeah and it's your turn to go
[515]
which is weird yeah but i feel like the
[517]
uk is more of a pedestrian place yeah so
[520]
maybe that makes sense whereas here if
[522]
you if you're in the suburbs like where
[524]
we live in florida where we grew up like
[527]
you're not walking anywhere that's weird
[529]
that's very strange so strange yeah okay
[532]
final question this is open-ended okay
[534]
do you have any idea what an allotment
[537]
is
[539]
oh my gosh um
[543]
allotment something to do with time
[546]
um in your job maybe like i feel like
[550]
that's a good guess but that has nothing
[551]
to do with it really
[553]
so an allotment is basically when they
[556]
they
[558]
okay so you know how in the uk garden
[560]
means
[561]
yard yes
[562]
so an allotment is i feel like what we
[564]
would call a garden
[566]
but they are not in their house so think
[569]
of like a village okay they have they
[571]
will have a piece of land that's divided
[573]
up into like rectangles yeah and each
[576]
one is basically an allotment or or it's
[578]
basically a garden that you can
[581]
i guess you rent it
[583]
it's i don't or you can own it but it's
[586]
not in your backyard but it's a guard
[587]
like so so it's like
[589]
if you have an allotment you go to this
[591]
place like in the village or wherever
[593]
you live to like tend to your vegetables
[596]
but it's not in your house it's not near
[597]
your house i like that so oh it's like a
[599]
little garden away from your home yeah
[602]
that's basically it's kind of charming
[603]
yeah i don't know if he would we i don't
[606]
we like farm but not yeah we don't have
[609]
allotment i mean maybe they do in cities
[611]
but i've never actually seen one right
[613]
we didn't grow up in the city no but
[615]
even in the suburbs of the uk they have
[617]
allotments i feel like it's because
[619]
there's no space for actual gardening in
[621]
many people's houses whereas here you
[623]
would just have it in your backyard yeah
[625]
but yeah an allotment is like a garden
[627]
away from your home the more you know
[629]
the more you know
[630]
so guys thanks for watching this video
[633]
some of you were interested in americans
[635]
reactions to certain things which i feel
[636]
like we got some good ones especially
[638]
when it comes to vacation time and
[641]
ambulance costs and all of that thanks
[643]
for watching and i'll see you guys next
[645]
time
