Radar Detectors vs Waze: Best Speeding Ticket Countermeasure? - YouTube

Hey, what's up guys? So in this video, we're going聽 to be taking a look at both radar detectors and聽聽
[3]
Waze. We're going to be taking a look at聽 the pros and cons of each, which one you聽聽
[7]
should run, if one can replace the other, and聽 ultimately what the best setup is going to be.聽聽
[14]
Now I see questions all the time, people are聽 wondering, "Why should I run a radar detector if I聽聽
[18]
already have Waze? Waze is free and already alerts聽 me to police officers," and that's a great point,聽聽
[23]
but it turns out each one has strengths and聽 weaknesses. And what's interesting is the聽聽
[27]
weakness of one is oftentimes compensated聽 by the other. So believe it or not,聽聽
[31]
your best set up a lot of times is not聽 just going to be running one or the other,聽聽
[34]
but actually both at the same time. Now starting聽 off with radar detectors real quick, they're not聽聽
[39]
police car detectors, they're radar detectors. And the idea is if an officer is running a radar聽聽
[44]
gun like this and if they want to clock oncoming聽 traffic up ahead, they can just grab their gun,聽聽
[48]
fire up the radar gun, and it's going to tell聽 them the speed of oncoming traffic like this.聽聽
[53]
And then of course any nearby radar detectors聽 are going to get alerted that radar is actively聽聽
[57]
being used. Police officers run radar a lot of聽 times in both front and rear facing antennas.聽聽
[62]
Now Waze is a little bit different. Instead聽 of trying to detect the officer's radar guns,聽聽
[66]
if you're driving by and you notice there's an聽 officer on the side of the road, you can just go聽聽
[69]
in the app and mark that an officer is there and聽 then other drivers will get alerted. Similarly, as聽聽
[73]
you're approaching an officer, you'll get alerted聽 to other people's notifications. So it's a big聽聽
[77]
cloud sourced notification alert system. Now there's definitely going to be pros and聽聽
[81]
cons to each. With radar detectors, for聽 example, these are awesome at getting you聽聽
[84]
long range alerts. You can easily get alerts聽 a mile to three miles plus, I've seen 10 mile聽聽
[89]
alerts before in ideal situations. One of the聽 downsides though is you're going to be getting聽聽
[94]
some false alerts. Like for example, you'll聽 notice my detector is starting to false here聽聽
[97]
to some of the shopping center automatic door聽 openers. Additionally, some newer cars have聽聽
[101]
radar based collision avoidance systems and those聽 can cause radar detectors to false alert as well.聽聽
[106]
In fact, Doug DeMuro, one of my favorite聽 YouTubers, did an article a couple years ago聽聽
[111]
comparing the two and this was his big complaint聽 about radar detectors. It was the fact that while聽聽
[115]
these things are going to false alert and that's聽 true. Luckily the newer ones do have some nice聽聽
[119]
filters to help filter those out, things like聽 maybe GPS to filter out door openers and whatnot,聽聽
[124]
or they're more advanced and sophisticated聽 able to filter out a lot of nearby cars. 聽
[128]
Every detector is still going to false to some聽 extent, but the newer detectors are better than聽聽
[132]
a lot of the older detectors. And then Waze, as聽 I mentioned, it's totally different. It's an app聽聽
[135]
you can run on your phone and you can report where聽 police are located and you get notified of other聽聽
[139]
people's reports. Plus it's a nice and popular聽 app so they actually offer an Apple CarPlay and聽聽
[144]
Android Auto integration as well so if you see an聽 officer, you can just go over here into the app聽聽
[148]
and then you can just mark, "Hey, police聽 spotted," and report it right here, which is聽聽
[151]
very convenient. Now Waze is going to work best in聽 populated areas because you're going to need a lot聽聽
[155]
of drivers to go in and drive around and report聽 when officers are now stopped in a certain area.聽聽
[160]
Additionally Waze is going to work best, well聽 actually only work against stationary threats. 聽
[164]
So an officer is parked on the side of the聽 road, Waze is going to be perfect for that. If聽聽
[168]
an officer is moving and they're running radar聽 like I am, Waze is not unfortunately going to聽聽
[172]
be useful at all. Somebody could of course mark聽 that there's an officer in this spot right now,聽聽
[176]
but they're going to be gone 10, 20 seconds from聽 now anyway. So that alert is really not going to聽聽
[179]
be useful. And so basically you're going to be聽 getting alerted to officers that are parked on聽聽
[183]
the side of the road and that have been there聽 for a little while, giving people enough time聽聽
[186]
to actually report that he's there so that you聽 can get alerted when you come by next. This is聽聽
[190]
then going to bring us to some of the downsides聽 of Waze. If you come up to an officer who just聽聽
[194]
arrived and hasn't been reported yet, you're聽 not going to get any advanced notification. 聽
[198]
Additionally, if the officer doesn't want to be聽 reported in the app, they can try to be hidden.聽聽
[202]
They can maybe kind of go hide off in the woods聽 a little bit. They can sometimes hang out on聽聽
[205]
highway overpasses or highway on-ramps and tag聽 people from behind or maybe it's just nighttime聽聽
[210]
and so it's really hard to see police officers聽 in the first place and mark them in the app,聽聽
[214]
especially if they have their lights off.聽 So for that reason, Waze is going to work聽聽
[217]
best when people can actually see the officers聽 and when you have a lot of people coming by. 聽
[221]
Additionally, because Waze is an app that requires聽 cell service, you're going to want to be in major聽聽
[225]
cities. It may not work when you're driving聽 through smaller towns or taking road trips or聽聽
[228]
something. I've also run into issues if I drive聽 up into Canada and I don't have international聽聽
[233]
roaming data, for example, Waze doesn't help聽 there. But if you're doing most of your typical聽聽
[237]
driving just around town or on highways and聽 kind of urban areas, Waze will be great for聽聽
[241]
that. Now the biggest limitation that I find聽 with Waze is the fact that it only works on聽聽
[246]
officers who are stationary. If they're聽 moving, if they're running radar while driving,聽聽
[249]
Waze is not going to help for that. I see a lot of聽 that myself and for that reason, I definitely need聽聽
[254]
to still run a radar detector, even though Waze is聽 a great add-on. Now if anything, Waze is actually聽聽
[260]
going to be more useful against officers running聽 laser than it will if they're running radar. 聽
[264]
Now the reason that's the case is that聽 if an officer's running a laser gun,聽聽
[268]
they can only do this when stationary. You can't聽 exactly do this while also trying to drive, right?聽聽
[274]
Plus laser guns themselves only support stationary聽 operation. They have no moving mode capabilities聽聽
[279]
at all. So laser can only be done when an聽 officer's stationary, which again is going to聽聽
[282]
be great for Waze. Additionally, Laser Jammers are聽 going to be more expensive than radar detectors.聽聽
[287]
The installation is much more involved.聽 They are prohibited in certain states.聽聽
[292]
Plus it's not going to be as easy to maybe toss聽 one into a rental car or something as you're聽聽
[295]
traveling the way it would be with maybe a radar聽 detector, you could just stick on the windshield.聽聽
[299]
But the main advantage is going to come from the聽 fact that officers have to be stationary when聽聽
[302]
they're running laser unlike radar, which聽 can be run both stationary or moving. 聽
[306]
Additionally, the way people actually report聽 the officer in the app can make a difference.聽聽
[310]
If the officer's set up shooting laser聽 and they've got nice long line of sight,聽聽
[313]
Waze is only going to give you a half mile of聽 advanced warning and it's definitely possible聽聽
[317]
to where the officer can hit you with laser聽 before you get the alert from Waze. Additionally,聽聽
[321]
the way Waze works, if somebody's driving down聽 the road and they see an officer and then it may聽聽
[325]
take them a quarter mile to actually go into the聽 app and mark the officer. So for that reason,聽聽
[330]
the alert is going to be a little bit behind where聽 the officer actually is, which shortens your alert聽聽
[334]
distance. And so I find that even against聽 laser, Waze is not going to be a suitable,聽聽
[339]
reliable, substitute. It's a great add on and聽 it's more helpful against officers running laser,聽聽
[344]
but I definitely find that Laser Jammers聽 are still very helpful and necessary,聽聽
[348]
Waze is not going to be a suitable alternative. And then as far as false alerts, I find that Waze聽聽
[352]
is pretty good about this. If you come across聽 an officer who's previously been marked and now聽聽
[356]
he's no longer there, Waze actually has an option聽 in the app to mark that the officer is no longer聽聽
[360]
there, which is pretty cool. Now that said, I聽 can't tell you how many times I've been driving聽聽
[365]
down the highway with a Waze alert up ahead,聽 expecting to get shot with laser or something.聽聽
[369]
So I've got my hand on the kill switch, ready聽 to disable my Laser Jammers, but it turns out聽聽
[373]
this was just a false alert too and so I wind聽 up marking in the app that the officer is no聽聽
[377]
longer there. So yeah, Waze definitely has its聽 own share of false alerts too. In fact, I've聽聽
[382]
seen more false alerts from Waze than legitimate聽 alerts, but of course your mileage may vary. 聽
[386]
Now I've heard a lot of people concerned about聽 what happens if officers may be set up on the side聽聽
[390]
of the road, set up a speed trap, and they're also聽 running Waze and people mark them and they just聽聽
[393]
go into the app and say, "I'm no longer here."聽 What about that? That's a great question and even聽聽
[398]
though officers can and do, do that sometimes,聽 I don't think it's a huge issue in practice.聽聽
[402]
The way Waze works is it's going to be looking for聽 multiple people to report and confirm something.聽聽
[406]
So let's say an officer sitting on the side of the聽 road and says, "I'm not there," in the app, well聽聽
[410]
everybody else coming by is going to say, "Well,聽 yes, the officer is still here." And so therefore聽聽
[414]
the alert is going to stay and remain in the聽 app. Additionally, Waze is going to see that this聽聽
[418]
user, their reports are not very accurate. They report something, but everybody else is聽聽
[422]
saying something else. And because of that,聽 it's going to start to kind of weigh down聽聽
[426]
their reports and make them not as important to聽 somebody whose accuracy is going to be higher.聽聽
[431]
Additionally, if an officer wants to drive聽 around and just start reporting, "I'm here.聽聽
[434]
I'm here. I'm here," but there's no actual officer聽 there, people are going to drive by it and say,聽聽
[439]
"There is no officer here." So again, that's going聽 to be affecting the accuracy of their reports,聽聽
[443]
which is going to factor in, in terms聽 of long-term reporting in general. So聽聽
[446]
that's a concern, but I don't think that's a huge聽 issue in practice. And so when it comes to all the聽聽
[450]
different countermeasures, what I find works best聽 and what I do myself is I run a radar detector,聽聽
[455]
I run Waze, and I run my laser jamming system. This is going to give me a nice protection against聽聽
[460]
all of them. No one option is going to be giving聽 you protection in all situations and heck running聽聽
[464]
all three is not going to mean you're going聽 to be completely bulletproof or anything,聽聽
[468]
but the odds definitely get stacked much higher聽 in your favor once you start getting multiple聽聽
[471]
layers of protection, instead of relying on just聽 one to keep you completely protected. And then if聽聽
[476]
you need any recommendations about my favorite聽 radar detectors and my favorite Laser Jammers,聽聽
[480]
I'll drop links in the video description. And then聽 finally, I'm also curious to hear from you guys.聽聽
[484]
I know a lot of you also run Waze, you also run聽 radar detectors, and whatnot. I'm curious about聽聽
[488]
your countermeasures. Do you find that one is more聽 helpful than the other? Do you find that maybe聽聽
[494]
most of your saves come from your radar detector聽 or maybe most of the saves come from Waze? 聽
[499]
Let me know. I'm curious to hear kind of聽 which countermeasures you found to be most聽聽
[502]
helpful and if you think you could get away聽 with maybe just running one or the other,聽聽
[507]
if one could be a complete replacement. In my聽 opinion, I don't think so, but other people, maybe聽聽
[511]
that is your experience. So I'm kind of curious.聽 Let me know down in the comments. Other than that,聽聽
[515]
yeah. Thanks so much for watching. I know this聽 is something that people have been asking all the聽聽
[518]
time so it's always fun to do videos about that聽 and just kind of answer this in detail so that we聽聽
[522]
can all go over this together. So awesome. Thanks聽 again. I'll see you in the next video. Bye.
