What is P-EBT? - YouTube
Channel: University of Wisconsin Extension
[0]
Hi my name is Liliana, FoodWIse nutrition聽
educator with University of Wisconsin Madison聽聽
[6]
Division of Extension Brown County. Have you聽
heard about P-EBT? No? Pay attention this聽聽
[12]
information can be really helpful for you and your聽
family. First thing first, what is P-EBT? P-EBT聽聽
[22]
provides temporary food benefits for children聽
who usually get free or reduced price school聽聽
[27]
meals through the national school lunch program聽
these benefits are called pandemic EBT or P-EBT聽聽
[37]
Good news isn't it? Now let me聽
explain how you can apply for聽聽
[41]
this great benefit, you can get in聽
touch with your food service program聽聽
[46]
for help with the application as well under聽
this video you will have access to a link聽聽
[52]
that connects you with the online application聽
process if you already have a quest card like聽聽
[57]
the green one that you see on the screen. The聽
benefit will get loaded in the card automatically.聽聽
[64]
Still there? You can use these cards like聽
in debit cards to buy food seeds and plants聽聽
[73]
if you're able to get the benefits you will聽
get a combined benefit amount for March and聽聽
[77]
April of around 176 dollars for each child these聽
are retroactive benefit that means even though聽聽
[86]
march already passed still you can apply and get聽
the benefit for May and June combined you will聽聽
[91]
get around 148 dollars for each child more good聽
news you will have one year to use the benefits
[103]
Now let's think about the benefit of using P-EBT聽
for healthy eating you and your family can benefit聽聽
[109]
from eating healthy to name a few benefits you聽
and your family can feel healthy with more energy,聽聽
[115]
eating healthy will help prevent and manage聽
health conditions such as diabetes and high blood聽聽
[121]
pressure. Eating healthy can maintain a healthy聽
weight and you will be a role model for your kids.聽聽
[130]
One tool that can be used to make sure meals are聽
balanced is MyPlate. MyPlate contains five groups,聽聽
[137]
the goal is to eat from all five every day and you聽
can see from the size of the pieces on my plane聽聽
[144]
that you should eat more from聽
some food groups than others聽聽
[148]
as you can see fruits and vegetables fill half聽
of MyPlate not every meal will contain all five聽聽
[156]
but the more food groups you can include聽
the more nutritious your meals will be.
[163]
I know that you think eating healthy is expensive聽
please know that you don't have to spend a lot of聽聽
[169]
money to purchase nutritious foods, one way to聽
save money is to plan ahead something that helps聽聽
[175]
me to plan ahead is to create a list this is聽
so helpful not only helps me to keep track of聽聽
[182]
what I have at home as well it helps me to reduce聽
my trips to the store and the time that I spend聽聽
[188]
at the store as well it helps me to decrease聽
my food waste this is a win-win please check聽聽
[195]
the links below they do have more information聽
about meal planning and other great resources.聽聽
[202]
Let me show you how I save money on foods this聽
week and having nutritious foods at the same time,聽聽
[209]
for fruits and vegetables I did buy what was in聽
season which tends to be the cheapest and tastiest聽聽
[216]
this week I bought peaches and聽
cucumbers of course bananas and celeries聽聽
[222]
there always tend to be pretty accessible.
[227]
Speaking about fruits and vegetables farmer聽
market season is open you can go to the farmers聽聽
[233]
market and double your money there to buy great聽
produce here's how. You go to the farmer's market聽聽
[240]
information booth with your P-EBT they聽
will swipe your card and they will give聽聽
[244]
you tokens to spend on the farmers market you聽
will also receive an additional free ten dollars聽聽
[251]
called "Double your Bucks" to spend on fruits and聽
vegetables eating healthy fruits and vegetables聽聽
[258]
also keeps your body strong to fight off illness聽
which is especially important during the COVID-19.聽聽
[266]
Back to MyPlate for Grains, tortillas are my go-to聽
source I of course always pick the cheapest ones聽聽
[273]
but I make sure I have my whole grains and that is聽
the case because corn tortillas are whole grains聽聽
[280]
which provides more nutrients for聽
you. For Protein, I say yes to beans.聽聽
[287]
I did pay $1.79 for my dry beans they will last聽
me for a few meals cheap and nutritious and let聽聽
[296]
me share my save money on meat trick, I always聽
look on the quick meat sell section at the store.聽聽
[304]
Eggs as well are a protein source, I paid聽
this week $1.48 cents per 18 eggs that is 12聽聽
[313]
cents per egg. Another point to prove that聽
healthy eating doesn't have to be that expensive.
[323]
And don't forget Dairy we love yogurt in聽
my household and vanilla yogurt was less聽聽
[329]
than three dollars for a family container that聽
will last me a couple of snacks and breakfast.聽聽
[336]
By planning ahead and spending wisely at the聽
grocery store you'll be able to purchase healthy聽聽
[342]
foods for less money using your P-EBT benefits聽
go ahead and check the status of your P-EBT and聽聽
[350]
get the most benefit from it and don't forget to聽
check in the other resources that we have for you.聽聽
[358]
Take care and don't forget make聽
the healthy choice the easy choice.
