Welcome to Semivintage.
[2]
Today we’re looking at the Jinhao Centennial, or sometimes called the Jinhao Duofold
[8]
after the classic Parker design it emulates.
[16]
We’ve covered Jinhao before,
[18]
a relatively recent manufacturer that makes affordable pens.
[22]
This one however is a little north of their usual market segment.
[27]
Pricing for this particular one was 18 dollars and 9 cents Singaporean or 13.30 American.
[34]
A slight price drop from when it was first launched, something I’ve noticed with pens
[39]
in this price range.
[41]
More room for adjustment compared to the lower end models perhaps.
[46]
We know Jinhao is trying to climb the value chain, so how about this one?
[51]
First up some measurements.
[54]
Not ideal for posting, a little too unwieldy so if you must post this may not be a pen
[60]
for you.
[62]
For our size comparison we have our Moonman M8, because it’s pretty.
[69]
And a growing Jinhao family.
[72]
Incomplete but good enough for this purpose.
[75]
51A, 992, shark or 993, 996, x750, chunky lad 159 and the centennial. From the left to right.
[91]
Close up we see the Jinhao logo of a chariot on the clip.
[101]
Rather functional, not too stiff.
[105]
‘Jinhao’ on the band, without the usual model number.
[111]
Flat on both ends.
[114]
Metal insert on the top of the cap, Jinhao chariot logo.
[120]
I picked the red koi finish for resin option because I liked how it looked in the pictures.
[127]
The red is rather opaque whilst the white bits are a little iridescent in different lighting angles
[142]
but if you look closely you can see it shows the threading which may put
[147]
some people off.
[149]
Given the nature of patterned resins you may or may not see the same in yours,
[154]
if you decide to order one.
[157]
Takes quite a few turns to unscrew the cap.
[167]
A standard #6 Jinhao fude nib in duotone, you can get it other options but I happened
[174]
to like this one.
[177]
Easily swappable.
[188]
Comes with a standard jinhao converter.
[198]
Has an o-ring but these threads are metal so eyedropper conversions might not optimal.
[216]
Plastic on metal threads might also be a little concerning if you’re expecting this pen
[221]
to last forever.
[229]
Now let’s have a writing sample.
[233]
<Writing sample>
[318]
Well is it worth it?
[320]
To be honest I’m a little torn on this one.
[323]
For one I’m used to Jinhao fountain pens at a third or a fifth of this price
[329]
so perhaps I feel a little more critical than usual.
[334]
Whether a fancier finish is worth the premium is highly subjective.
[340]
It writes pretty well so if you like the design then maybe.
[344]
That’s all for this one, see you in the next video.
[348]
Stay safe out there.
[350]
Bye.
