Nintendo DS: Touched at First Sight - Scott The Woz - YouTube
Channel: unknown
[0]
hey y'all Scott here and congratulations
[2]
on finally not getting that job I just
[4]
applied to because I'm really gonna get
[5]
it this time
[6]
I put any and all contact information on
[8]
my resume including one and where I'm
[10]
available I'm Pictochat that'll set me
[13]
apart the Nintendo DS's guts favorite
[15]
little portable there's no conceivable
[17]
way that a product that initially looked
[19]
like this did this but Nintendo did the
[21]
unthinkable and sold over 150 million of
[24]
these things and after closer
[25]
examination it's incredibly apparent why
[27]
the game library is seemingly endless
[29]
that initiated tons of concepts that are
[32]
still being used to this day and it got
[33]
all of our uncles to actually play
[34]
videogames I personally played this guy
[36]
a ton a Nintendo DS line of consoles got
[39]
me through so many car trips as a kid I
[41]
would always keep my eyes on the screens
[42]
the entire time during them and because
[44]
of that only recently I learned that
[45]
toll booths exist the DS was announced
[47]
in late 2003 as simply a new system to
[50]
be released in 2004 with Nintendo also
[52]
stating they were planning to focus on
[54]
developing games that anybody could get
[55]
behind a few months later in early 2004
[58]
the codename Nintendo DS was unveiled
[60]
alongside the fact that the system would
[61]
feature two whole screens Nintendo used
[64]
a soccer game as an example for dual
[65]
screen gaming in their press release
[67]
describing how one screen could show the
[69]
main gameplay while the other could
[70]
display a specific players tackle or
[72]
goal you ever just play a soccer game
[73]
and you're like there's just not enough
[74]
screens the idea behind two screens was
[76]
a bit odd at first Nintendo definitely
[78]
needed to prove their worth and keep in
[80]
mind at this point all we knew about the
[81]
Nintendo DS was that it had two screens
[83]
everything else lodged in the system
[85]
would officially be revealed later at e3
[87]
2004
[88]
yeah the Nintendo DS wasn't a looker
[90]
during its prototype phase but at least
[92]
Nintendo made up for it by showing off a
[93]
Metroid Prime game running on the system
[96]
yes Nintendo's premiere 3d first-person
[98]
shooter was playable on a handheld that
[101]
was insane not only that but they also
[104]
showed off a demo of Super Mario 64
[106]
running on the device this much
[107]
cockiness can't be healthy a touchscreen
[109]
microphone Gameboy advanced support
[112]
wireless multiplayer a terrifying design
[114]
the whole suite of DS features were
[116]
unveiled at this point Metroid Prime
[117]
hunters Super Mario 64 times for
[119]
WarioWare in the Pictochat application
[121]
were all playable at the show alongside
[123]
playable tech demos that would later
[125]
become games like Yoshi touch and go and
[127]
the 3ds launch titles steel diver
[128]
plus Nintendo showed off videos of
[130]
upcoming games like Mario Kart des
[132]
Crossing DS new super mario brothers and
[134]
in ten dogs Nintendo later confirmed
[136]
that Nintendo DS would be the final name
[137]
for the product alongside showing off
[139]
the finalized design go back and the
[141]
handheld would officially launch on
[143]
November 21st 2004 here in North America
[145]
for 149 dollars and 99 cents now I don't
[149]
know about anybody else but at the
[150]
height of the DS dynasty I barely saw
[152]
the original model out in the wild it
[154]
was a rarity you'd see everybody else
[156]
playing their DS lights and DSi s and
[158]
then there was that one kid that nobody
[159]
trusted any version of the DEA's prior
[161]
to 2006 look pretty horrendous to put it
[163]
lightly this looks like something you
[164]
put in a holster it always looked more
[166]
like equipment than a slick video game
[168]
system the bottom half has some meat on
[169]
its bones and all the curves ridges and
[172]
indents add up to a video game system
[173]
with a question mark at the end this is
[175]
comfortable enough to play all the
[177]
buttons feel perfectly fine and it
[178]
conveniently uses the GBA SP charging
[181]
cable however things really start
[182]
picking up when you actually turn the
[183]
system on just that touch screen to
[185]
continue holy SH this is the future 2008
[188]
here we come
[189]
dual screens weren't necessarily the
[190]
talk of the town when it came to the DES
[192]
most of it came from the touchscreen
[194]
remember this was 2004 touch screens
[196]
were seldom used and when they were it
[198]
was almost always stuff like PDAs and
[200]
these definitely won't play pack picks
[202]
so that's a point for the DS right there
[203]
however the DS was definitely all about
[205]
video games even if the user interface
[207]
tries to scream hike and be a PDA to a
[209]
calendar and a clock that's all you
[211]
really need an instant messaging
[212]
application well don't mind if I do
[214]
Pictochat is much more than just the
[216]
best stage in Super Smash Brothers Brawl
[217]
and it wasn't just an application it was
[220]
an experience you could start a chat
[221]
room with 15 other players nearby and
[223]
just doodle it up sending whatever you
[225]
want to each other you can also just use
[226]
it by yourself I used to make some
[228]
pretty slick flip books by just sending
[230]
a bunch of images and then rapidly going
[231]
through them all here's me drawing stuff
[233]
on it back in 2009 whoa it was never
[235]
online so it only let you chat with
[237]
people in the same room you may ask
[239]
what's the point of messaging to people
[240]
if you have to be in the same room well
[242]
just ask the Nintendo DS stylus or as I
[244]
like to call it the crotch doodler yeah
[246]
the Dia's touch screen was just too
[247]
small and not well-suited for finger use
[249]
it was always best to use it for
[251]
applications that required a more
[252]
sensitive touch but by god they made it
[254]
hard to warrant using it on the original
[256]
DS model listen I get it they probably
[258]
couldn't have put the stylus slot on the
[259]
right or left hand side where you know
[261]
your hand would actually be because of
[263]
how the system's internals had to be
[265]
laid out
[265]
I don't care I'm still gonna whine about
[267]
it the stylist placement on this thing
[269]
reeks no matter who you are having the
[271]
stylist on the top left hand corner is
[272]
dreadful but you know it's one of the
[274]
lamest things about the original des the
[276]
fact that if you do anything on this
[277]
system and want to go back to the home
[279]
screen you have to turn the system off
[280]
and on again and it's not a huge deal
[282]
but seriously if you just go into the
[283]
settings not do anything and try to go
[285]
back it forces you to turn the entire
[286]
system off like that just kind of
[288]
defeats the entire purpose of having a
[289]
home screen at all but whatever a
[291]
Nintendo was still supporting the Game
[293]
Boy Advance and game keep at the time
[294]
and always maintained that the DS was a
[296]
successor to neither of those platforms
[298]
rather it was a third pillar for the
[300]
company and man Nintendo's comedy
[302]
routine was really getting good at this
[303]
point you were just saying that in case
[305]
the DS failed plus if it wasn't a
[307]
successor why was it backwards
[308]
compatible with the GBA today I'm not
[310]
complaining about this feature having
[312]
the ability to play all Game Boy Advance
[313]
games instantly gave the DSL library to
[315]
reckon with it's unfortunate they cut it
[317]
off at GBA and didn't support Game Boy
[319]
Color in the original Game Boy but I'll
[321]
take it at the time of the dss release
[323]
Sony was preparing the launch of their
[325]
first true handheld console the
[327]
PlayStation Portable and almost
[328]
everybody plot their bets on Sony
[330]
winning the war
[330]
Nintendo never really had a huge threat
[333]
in terms of handheld competition up
[334]
until this point I think Sega probably
[336]
got the closest with the Game Gear and I
[337]
will debate anybody who considers that
[339]
thing handheld or competition Sony was
[341]
the clear leader of the video game
[343]
market at the time and the mere idea of
[344]
them breaking into handhelds made many
[346]
go yeah the one that plays daxter is
[348]
gonna win the PSP was sleeker and way
[350]
more powerful so Nintendo had to do
[352]
something to prove to everybody that the
[354]
DS could handle more demanding games so
[356]
what did they do at launch they bundled
[358]
in a demo of Metroid Prime hunters and
[360]
crammed Super Mario 64 into a franchise
[362]
it of a game card the launch titles of
[364]
the DS were pretty weak in my opinion
[366]
really the only major highlight was
[368]
Super Mario 64 DS wasn't the entire
[370]
concept of playing Super Mario 64 on the
[372]
go was mind blowing at the time to have
[375]
a game like Super Mario 64 on the go may
[377]
not seem like a big deal now but back
[379]
then it was amazing it truly made the
[382]
Dia's feel like a home console you could
[383]
take on the road the game looked really
[385]
good for the system and some may say it
[387]
looked even better than the original
[388]
that's debatable like it looks better in
[390]
the sense that the character models are
[392]
all updated but everything is much more
[393]
pixelated over all over I think it still
[396]
looks quite good for the platform and is
[397]
just a solid remake all around
[399]
too bad my thumbs can hate it yeah most
[401]
of my showers nowaday consist of me
[403]
thinking about why they thought Mario 64
[405]
and the D s was a good idea considering
[406]
it only has a d-pad that mean it works
[408]
but it's not ideal in the slightest they
[411]
give you a few control options including
[412]
using the touchscreen they walk around
[415]
Jesus but the d-pad is the most optimal
[417]
and it's still putrid and to everybody
[419]
who says play it on the 3ds that way
[421]
you'll get your precious analog stick as
[422]
the game was programmed to function with
[424]
a d-pad and a runt button using a cirque
[426]
pad doesn't fix the issues it still
[428]
doesn't feel right
[428]
it just got bugs me that they put so
[430]
much work into a remake of mario 64 only
[433]
to have it kind of ruined by the
[434]
limitations of the hardware they put it
[435]
on a similar situation happened with
[437]
metroid prime hunters with it being a
[439]
first-person shooter on the platform I
[440]
think Nintendo wanted to prove that
[442]
launch that the DS could do things that
[443]
it could definitely do but not crazy
[446]
well however by around 2006 Nintendo
[448]
totally threw this urge out the window
[450]
and focused on the casuals this was when
[454]
the DS really took off and the consoles
[455]
first redesign played a key role here
[458]
the Nintendo DS Lite released on June 11
[460]
2006 was everything civilization was
[462]
leading up to the difference between the
[464]
first model and the light are night and
[466]
day the light improved on nearly
[467]
everything the design was sleek and
[469]
refined the screens actually totally
[471]
didn't reek the stylus placement office
[474]
the only two negative things about the
[476]
light were the fact that the GBA games
[478]
stuck out when you popped them in and it
[479]
used its own proprietary charger other
[481]
than that this is a beautiful system
[484]
this was the model I got as a kid back
[486]
in 2007 I had the white one and got so
[488]
much playtime out of it but this system
[491]
because two years later another redesign
[493]
came out the Nintendo DSi released on
[495]
November 1st 2008 in Japan with a North
[498]
American release happening on April 5th
[499]
2009 in short the DSi was an improved es
[503]
with two cameras but who cares because
[504]
they got rid of the GBA slot this was a
[506]
big deal to a lot of people and I gotta
[508]
be honest it was a pretty solid blow to
[510]
me but 2009 Scott still traded his
[512]
trusty DS Lite in for a black DSi in my
[515]
opinion it was still a worthwhile
[516]
upgrade simply due to the fact that it
[517]
added so much functionality to the
[519]
system cameras were the big selling
[521]
point but to me it was cool simply
[523]
because it almost felt like a Wii in
[524]
your pocket the overall presentation
[526]
just felt so similar to the Wii with the
[528]
way the various apps and games were laid
[530]
out the music playing on the homescreen
[531]
the DSi even had an online
[533]
shops and where to the we which sold
[535]
DSiWare games
[536]
well the DSi shop was recently closed
[538]
all the games - 10 select ones can be
[540]
purchased on the 3ds eShop so it doesn't
[543]
look like some apocalypse or anything is
[544]
gonna happen do you say we're always
[546]
left me feeling a bit empty though much
[548]
like we wear a ton of garbage was thrown
[550]
onto the service some stellar titles
[552]
were on there Shantae risky's revenge
[553]
Cave Story Dark Void zero but there sure
[557]
was a ton of trash and Dino charge like
[559]
two bucks each for calculator and claw
[561]
caps like come on why were snapped was a
[563]
criminally short warrior war title that
[565]
used the cameras and had you batting
[567]
your hands around to play micro games
[568]
and that barely worked dr. Mario Express
[570]
was a solid dr. Mario game but it didn't
[573]
have online play so that was a bummer
[574]
but least flipnote studio was awesome it
[576]
was a really great little animation tool
[578]
photo dojo was so cool you took fictions
[581]
and turned yourself and friends into
[582]
fighting game characters there was
[583]
definitely fun to be had with some
[584]
DSiWare games but there just wasn't a
[586]
ton of heavy hitters and I was also
[588]
always bummed they never had a Virtual
[589]
Console for the DSi shop like come on
[591]
you took away the GBA slot you should
[593]
have had a Virtual Console - resold
[595]
handheld games outside of the internet
[597]
functionality the DSi had terrible
[598]
cameras coupled with amazing software
[601]
all the edits you can do to your
[602]
pictures were awesome and you could also
[604]
mess with audio recordings via the DSi
[606]
sound app once again though a new
[608]
charging cable is used which is a mega
[610]
anoints now if you hate the idea of a
[612]
handheld system being handheld a
[613]
Nintendo released a variant of the DSi a
[615]
year later the Nintendo DSi XL launching
[618]
on November 21st 2009 in Japan in March
[620]
28th 2010 in North America they weren't
[623]
kiddin this is in fact an XL version of
[625]
the DSi if you want larger screens than
[627]
by all means the DSi XL is for you it
[629]
has a glossy coating on the outside and
[631]
came with a fountain pen other than that
[633]
it's literally just a bigger DSi the XL
[636]
systems were marketed towards the more
[637]
hardcore players with the Nintendo 3ds
[639]
line but the DSi XL just take a look at
[642]
the colors we got burgundy and bronze
[644]
these things flooded retirement homes
[645]
and those are all the DS models out
[647]
there and in terms of which systems hold
[649]
up best today
[649]
I'd say anything from the DS Lite
[651]
onwards however I think all the
[653]
variations have great feeling controls
[655]
the DS Lite has a bit of a softer
[657]
squishier d-pad and while that sounds
[659]
bad
[659]
it actually feels really nice the DSi is
[661]
much click here if you're into that sort
[663]
of thing
[664]
you can play DS games on the 3ds
[666]
but if you want an original DS model I'd
[668]
say go with the light the DSi is
[670]
exclusive features aren't you all for
[671]
compelling nowadays and the lack of GBA
[673]
compatibility makes the DS Lite far more
[675]
useful plus almost all the DSi features
[677]
live on with the 3ds cameras sound app
[680]
dsiware games it's all there so the DSi
[683]
itself isn't too awful necessary to own
[684]
these days but now we've got to talk
[687]
about the games no matter how you slice
[689]
it the Diaz had an insane library I
[691]
definitely say the third-party support
[693]
was crazy impressive maybe even better
[695]
than Nintendo's that's not the st.
[697]
Nintendo's offerings weren't good but
[699]
the sheer amount of quality third-party
[701]
games was insane
[702]
I'd say the DS had better third-party
[704]
support than the 3ds however the 3ds had
[706]
better first party support looking at
[708]
the big three Nintendo franchises
[709]
represented on the DES the results were
[712]
a bit iffy now I already talked some
[714]
Super Mario 64 DS but in terms of
[716]
original Mario titles on the platform
[717]
none were as prolific as new Super Mario
[720]
Brothers it completely stalled the show
[722]
was the game to get with the DS and
[724]
being the first original 2d Mario game
[726]
in years definitely helped it happened
[728]
well it was lauded as one of the best
[730]
Mario games out there at launch its
[732]
reception has definitely went down a bit
[734]
over time simply due to how many new
[736]
Super Mario Brothers titles followed it
[737]
regardless new Super Mario Brothers
[739]
worked so Zelda kinda tried a similar
[743]
tactic taking 3d models and putting them
[745]
in an old-school format The Legend of
[747]
Zelda Phantom Hourglass and spirit
[749]
tracks are top-down Zelda games with the
[751]
same aesthetic as the Wind Waker it
[752]
looks fine from the top-down view but
[754]
when the camera comes up close that the
[755]
character so god these all the titles
[757]
definitely have a unique controls you're
[759]
required to use the touch screen and
[760]
drag your stylus wherever you want link
[762]
to go I don't know it just doesn't feel
[764]
as good as Bunn controls to me it
[766]
doesn't feel like you are linked it
[767]
feels like you're leading link that's
[769]
not to say they're bad I'm just not a
[771]
huge fan of controlling link here
[772]
everything else works pretty well
[773]
Metroid Prime Hunter said you move with
[775]
the d-pad and aim with the touchscreen
[776]
similar to Mario 64 DS's control scheme
[779]
it worked it just wasn't ideal it was a
[782]
b-tier Metroid Prime game but it was
[785]
still impressive for the system and even
[786]
included online multiplayer with voice
[788]
chat but if you love everything about
[789]
Metroid Prime except for the gameplay
[791]
might I recommend Metroid Prime pinball
[795]
that's better than you think however the
[797]
games that really made the dias explode
[798]
in popularity we're definitely the touch
[800]
generations titles games made for those
[803]
people who don't know where the L button
[804]
is Big Brain Academy flash focus
[806]
crosswords Diaz personal trainer cooking
[809]
but the big one was definitely brain age
[812]
flip the DEA's on its side and hold it
[814]
like a book to get told off by doctor
[816]
Kawashima was a man the only reason why
[817]
my brain aged blows is because this game
[819]
hates how I write fives speaking of
[821]
games that anybody could play I played a
[823]
lot of professor Lane in the Curious
[824]
Village with my mom this was such a well
[826]
made puzzle game without standing
[828]
production values on the topic of puzzle
[830]
games the Dia's nailed them this was
[832]
like the perfect platform for the genre
[833]
meteos is probably the main puzzle game
[835]
the Dia's can call its own it was
[837]
designed by Masahiro Sakurai and I'll
[839]
eventually learn how to play it but now
[840]
it's not the time because pick cross 3d
[842]
is on the system you have standard pick
[843]
Ross Diaz and then pick Ross 3d which is
[846]
really its own thing like they didn't
[847]
even have to name it after pick Ross
[849]
because it's so unique even though it's
[850]
still totally pick Ross the Mari vs.
[852]
Donkey Kong series made its way to the
[854]
DS starting with march of the minis and
[856]
does anybody else totally confuse all
[858]
the subtitles for these games this was a
[860]
cute little game my problem with it is
[862]
that they just kept on making it over
[864]
and over and over again at least this
[865]
one had cool CG cutscenes look at these
[867]
my jaw dropped when I saw my Diaz plane
[869]
set to clean-looking videos one thing
[871]
this game in Metroid Prime hunters did
[872]
was show two videos on the separate
[874]
screens both of the same scene but from
[877]
different angles this wasn't the
[878]
craziest best use of resources but it's
[880]
an interesting use of dual screens that
[881]
you really wouldn't find anywhere else
[883]
Tetris DS is one of the best versions of
[885]
Tetris out there being developed by
[887]
Nintendo allowed it to have this amazing
[889]
presentation featuring all kinds of
[891]
old-school NES sprites it's fantastic
[893]
and if we're talking retro style games
[894]
man the TS was killer
[896]
I think the cream of the crop has to be
[898]
a retro game challenge a loving homage
[900]
to gaming in the 80s but there were also
[901]
a handful of legitimate compilations
[903]
like the Sonic Classic Collection some
[905]
atari ones Namco Museum in terms of
[907]
throwbacks contra for men a great return
[910]
for the series space invaders Xtreme was
[912]
really cool grand theft auto chinatown
[915]
wars now that's a game that screams
[916]
don't put me on des
[917]
but it was still an awesome throwback to
[919]
the first few top-down grand theft
[921]
auto's but in the style of entries like
[922]
Grand Theft Auto 4 it's one of the few M
[924]
rated games on the platform there really
[926]
aren't too many out there but Chinatown
[928]
is definitely the most iconic our rhythm
[930]
games just Rhythm Heaven and Elite Beat
[932]
Agents alone make the DS the perfect
[935]
rhythm game machine and we can't forget
[936]
the Guitar Hero games on the system they
[938]
only worked with the DS and DS Lite due
[940]
to the guitar grip accessory requiring
[942]
the GBA slot but this was such a
[944]
creative way to get guitar hero on the
[946]
platform
[946]
RPGs just wouldn't stop on here of
[949]
course these things I don't get any of
[952]
this but Pokemon had a ton of entries on
[954]
the DS Mario and Luigi series continued
[956]
on here Final Fantasy games including
[958]
some amazing remakes that definitive
[960]
version of Chrono Trigger Dragon Quest
[962]
The World Ends With You Golden Sun I may
[965]
not be an RPG guy but I know they were
[967]
fantastic on the platform Mario Kart
[970]
Diaz was huge I personally never owned
[973]
it when it was big but Deus brought so
[975]
much to the franchise 16 new tracks and
[977]
the introduction of 16 retro tracks
[979]
remastered online play mission mode it's
[982]
so good really enough if you weren't
[984]
into Mario Kart Nintendo also published
[986]
a remake of Diddy Kong Racing it never
[988]
expected that to come out Animal
[990]
Crossing wild world also brought online
[992]
play to its franchise for the first time
[994]
which became one of the key components
[995]
of the series starfox command is better
[997]
than Star Fox zero all at least say that
[999]
and chibi-robo actually had games on
[1001]
here platformers are my bread and butter
[1003]
though Kirby was heavily represented on
[1005]
the DS the most unique game definitely
[1007]
being canvas curse yes you're drawn
[1009]
lines and guiding Kirby around that's
[1011]
fun
[1011]
the legendary Starfy was a worthy
[1013]
alternative to Kirby well if you wanted
[1015]
something a bit more fast-paced the
[1017]
sonic rush series was definitely your go
[1018]
to Mario spin-offs were plentiful and
[1020]
included a sequel to Yoshi's Island this
[1022]
game reeks and super Princess Peach
[1024]
second verse same as the first Plus
[1026]
nothing says I hate sex more than Wario
[1028]
master of disguise
[1029]
at least there was actual Castlevania
[1030]
titles on the platform can't say that
[1032]
nowadays Scribblenauts was a huge deal
[1034]
when it came out being able to write
[1036]
anything in its spawning in the game was
[1038]
just such a cool idea and if you wanted
[1040]
to get even more creative drawn to life
[1042]
elided to draw your own hero character
[1044]
and i had such a blast with this why you
[1046]
were DIY similarly let me create my own
[1048]
junk in the form of my own micro games
[1050]
and I loved every second of it
[1052]
on the topic of why are you where where
[1053]
you were touch was alright it just
[1054]
didn't grab me as much as other entries
[1056]
but nothing spoke to me on the DS more
[1059]
so than in
[1060]
dogs this was the first game that I
[1062]
owned on the platform and it utilized
[1064]
every single feature of the hardware in
[1065]
such fun ways you could talk to your dog
[1067]
teach it tricks play with toys buy more
[1069]
dogs talk to more dogs teach them tricks
[1071]
play with toys buy more dogs this was a
[1073]
blast don't even get me started on the
[1075]
Nintendo DS browser but you know what
[1077]
was the best thing about the games on
[1078]
the DS they gave me these cases and they
[1081]
were like half the size of DVD boxes
[1083]
they just made games feel more
[1084]
substantial well a fair amount of the
[1085]
game library is this the DS such a fun
[1090]
system unlike the Wii which was
[1091]
constantly chastised for being a gimmick
[1093]
I always felt like more were accepting
[1095]
of the DS the library was crazy and the
[1097]
gimmicks of the system actually turned
[1100]
out to be incredibly useful in various
[1101]
situations it was hard to try to
[1103]
remember all the great games on the DS
[1105]
that's how many there were I'm sure I
[1107]
still miss plenty Phoenix right Phoenix
[1110]
right the series is great such a fun
[1112]
visual novel putting click adventure
[1113]
tech game I love these games well just
[1115]
warm my heart to go on and on and on
[1117]
about the Nintendo DS maybe you'll see
[1119]
if there's anybody nearby on Pictochat
[1121]
it feels the same way we got a live one
[1124]
somebody joined uh maybe I'll tell them
[1127]
I see you like Pictochat yeah last two
[1133]
messages didn't send it sound a lot more
[1135]
murdery than I wanted it to
[1137]
[Music]
[1138]
[Applause]
[1140]
[Music]
[1150]
[Applause]
