[0]
all right kirsten so just take me
[1]
through this year what's this year been
[2]
like as you change defensive
[4]
coordinators and just watching this
[5]
entire defense come together from your
[7]
perspective it's cool man um you know we
[10]
started out this season a little slow
[12]
uh you know we our defense is a really
[14]
aggressive defense we play fast and
[16]
obviously when you play fast mistakes
[18]
are going to happen
[19]
um so
[21]
you know when i you know i was telling
[22]
everyone earlier in the year when you
[23]
can find the blend to play fast and you
[25]
know play a simon football at the same
[27]
time and you can blend that you're going
[28]
to be a really dangerous group and uh
[30]
we you know we have some young guys in
[31]
the defense of what as well you know
[33]
stepping into their own and filling in
[35]
um
[36]
so you're starting to see the results of
[38]
uh a lot of hard work and a lot of
[40]
countless hours for you know
[42]
fixing what was wrong and starting to
[44]
play his time in football as well as
[46]
playing fast
[48]
when did you feel like it really clicked
[50]
for this defense for the first time
[53]
uh versus
[55]
probably i mean
[56]
probably versus the the probably
[61]
i don't know i mean i think we we played
[63]
all right all you know all year but i
[64]
mean really the best game we played so
[66]
far was against navy and obviously last
[68]
week against virginia
[71]
that navy game's always got something
[72]
unique about it like what does that navy
[74]
game represent for you
[76]
i love playing against navy i mean those
[78]
dudes are tough you know they're real
[79]
hard those you know gritty guys and
[81]
it's an honor to play against someone
[83]
who's going to be serving your country
[84]
in a couple years um
[86]
you know it's great for me they run the
[88]
ball every play so i love it
[91]
i'm just thinking about the back to back
[92]
of the navy game and then the virginia
[94]
game
[95]
inside of that room right now that's got
[97]
to be pretty to two pretty impressive
[99]
performances to go back to back with
[101]
correct but we talk about all the time
[102]
you know the job's not finished we're
[104]
not where we want to be at the end of
[105]
the day yet
[108]
take me back to pittsburgh man growing
[110]
up in pittsburgh what does it mean to
[111]
you to be sort of pittsburgh tough and
[113]
to grow up from that area
[114]
you know it's uh you know i kind of
[116]
click i kind of carry that blue color
[117]
mentality on my shoulders every day and
[119]
you know kind of incorporate it with
[121]
everything i do um
[123]
you know it's uh
[125]
on your way to school in the morning in
[126]
the morning you see you know dump trucks
[128]
and guys going to the gas station and
[130]
filling up their coffee and getting
[131]
stuff for their lunch boxes it's kind of
[133]
a blue-collar town you know a lot of a
[135]
lot of construction workers in the area
[137]
i grew up a lot of police officers a lot
[138]
of school teachers you know
[140]
um but yeah it's cool man it's cool town
[142]
it's growing and it definitely you know
[144]
molds you into
[145]
a great young man hard working young men
[148]
yeah your dad was so awesome too really
[150]
become like a legendary figure in my
[152]
mind your pops how does he motivate you
[154]
how did he how was he raised you there
[157]
in pittsburgh
[158]
i was raised tough man i uh
[161]
you know i he expected nothing else for
[162]
me but to be tough and uh
[164]
you know
[165]
be kind of you know fall into you know
[167]
his kind of blue collar work ethic
[169]
between my mom and my dad
[171]
they both work extremely hard and
[173]
um you know i saw that growing up at a
[174]
young age and you know i always admired
[176]
that about both of them
[178]
what sports did you play growing up
[180]
i wrestled
[181]
and i played football and i was that was
[185]
the extent everyone plays baseball and
[187]
soccer when they were a little kid but i
[188]
didn't actually
[190]
the only sports i was like serious about
[192]
was wrestling and football
[194]
how do wrestling and football blend
[197]
i mean they're good they're great
[198]
especially you know feeling uh for your
[200]
balance you know kind of feeling
[201]
somebody you know wrestling with someone
[203]
you kind of um
[205]
you kind of
[206]
learn to counteract someone's balance
[208]
and kind of learn to contact your
[209]
balance with pushing out against one
[211]
another and uh wrestling is great
[213]
football because it helps with the
[214]
fundamental tackling
[216]
so for somebody who's never played nose
[218]
tackle which is the vast majority of
[220]
humanity explain some of the hand
[222]
fighting what's the key to the hand
[224]
fighting that goes on down there in the
[225]
trenches
[226]
you got to be fast you got to be low and
[228]
you got to play nasty um
[230]
you know that's what i always say and uh
[232]
you get a lot of double teams uh
[235]
you know when you get a one-on-one block
[236]
you got to make the most of it
[238]
um
[240]
yeah i mean you gotta play your hand's
[242]
gonna be fast immediately as soon as you
[243]
as soon as the ball snaps you gotta be
[244]
fast with your hands and uh you gotta be
[246]
quick and you gotta be violent so
[249]
when you start feeling the double team
[250]
what's the key like what's the key when
[252]
you're getting doubled
[254]
just being low i'm just you know
[257]
kind of having that mentality you're
[258]
just i always it's kind of cliche but i
[261]
always tell myself i'm
[262]
one of the most dangerous guy out here
[264]
you know if you want to do that to me go
[265]
ahead let's do it
[267]
yeah yeah so is the goal then to not
[269]
move is that is that really the goal
[270]
when you're getting double just stand
[271]
your ground i mean for the majority of
[273]
the people yeah but i like to like i
[275]
like to make plays off a double team you
[277]
know what i'm saying like it's one thing
[278]
to get double team to not get moved it's
[280]
another thing to get that team to make
[282]
plays
[283]
yeah well i mean that's what you do
[285]
so well so how has your perspective on
[288]
notre dame football evolved as you've
[290]
gone through this program and now that
[292]
you're towards the end of your notre
[293]
dame career
[295]
my perspective on the program itself
[298]
yeah it's awesome man i mean there's a
[300]
great culture here in this building and
[302]
what coach kelly has uh has built here
[304]
and all the support staff and everybody
[307]
it's great culture in the building um on
[309]
the field you know there it's you know a
[311]
lot of no-nonsense hard-working
[313]
individuals and the kind of what you see
[315]
is what you get with coach kelly and uh
[317]
you know he's a great guy a great role
[319]
model and um
[320]
it's been an honor to play under him and
[322]
you know it's been an honor to play
[323]
under coach lee and uh you know coach
[325]
marcus freeman the time we've had this
[327]
year and you know coach alliston and all
[329]
the js i've had since i've been here and
[331]
coach bayless you know he's out molded
[332]
me he's had a big big part in my uh
[335]
development here
[337]
does the appreciation for the grind
[339]
evolve as you grow up
[342]
you no doubt no doubt and i find myself
[344]
challenging myself more as i grow up and
[346]
as i'm working out by myself
[350]
how so
[351]
uh
[352]
so
[353]
lauren quarantine uh
[355]
i i worked out at my high school gym
[357]
and uh i didn't have a training partner
[359]
but like i i've like
[361]
you know the days where you go in and
[363]
then you probably work out so you know
[364]
something some of the days you go in
[366]
and you're not feeling well right
[369]
you know those are the days that you
[370]
kind of define who you are you know what
[372]
i'm saying you can either choose to you
[373]
know go through the motions or you can
[375]
get better that day and work harder than
[377]
you did the day before when you were
[378]
feeling good
[379]
um you know that i you know i give
[381]
myself a lot of positive reinforcement
[383]
self-talk while i was in there too and
[385]
um but yeah
[387]
yeah i mean you're viewed as one of the
[389]
truest and purest leaders on this team
[391]
so who was the leader you grew up
[394]
learning from when you got to notre dame
[395]
who was the best leader that you were
[397]
around
[399]
um
[400]
probably uh
[402]
i don't i don't want to say this because
[403]
it's going to get into his head and i'm
[404]
always knocking on him and stuff but
[407]
uh
[408]
audio gandaiji was a great leader worked
[411]
extremely hard
[412]
um
[413]
was a lot was a lot of no-nonsense work
[415]
extremely hard and we got to talk to
[416]
everybody
[417]
um robert hainesy was a great leader
[420]
um
[421]
you know ian booker was a great leader
[423]
quentin nelson was a great leader
[424]
michael mcglinchey was a great leader we
[425]
had a ton of great leaders um
[428]
but the two i can really think of in my
[430]
head are robert haynesy and audio
[431]
conditioning they're both dudes that
[432]
work extremely hard like myself and our
[434]
blue collar and um show up and sit and
[437]
be the same guy every day
[439]
what's it been like from your
[441]
perspective to watch this offensive line
[443]
come together this year and do so
[444]
playing some young guys
[446]
it's awesome it's awesome you know they
[448]
balanced you know they had a little bit
[450]
of trouble at first and now they're
[451]
coming into fruition and and they're
[453]
they're playing really well um
[455]
you know
[456]
a lot of people don't you know don't see
[458]
it every play but i see it every play
[460]
you know guys like kane madden and jared
[462]
patterson and christopher you know
[464]
they're actually laying dudes out on the
[465]
field where they're they're pulling or
[467]
they're coming down the line and cocaine
[469]
someone and it's really cool to see it
[471]
how about for joe all when did you first
[473]
realize joe alt may be different as a
[475]
true freshman george beast you know joe
[478]
joe and blake fisher and rocket spring
[480]
though they're all going to be great
[482]
offensive lineman here um joe joel is
[484]
going to be three and out uh blake
[486]
fisher's going to be three and out uh
[488]
rocco spindler has the potential to be
[490]
three and out um but they're both i mean
[493]
all three of them are really good but
[494]
joel i knew draw was different when he
[496]
was uh
[498]
during the the summer conditioning i
[499]
think joel was around 310 but during
[501]
summer conditioning he was up towards
[502]
the front of the pack
[503]
uh you know right next to isaiah foskey
[506]
when we were doing conditioning
[508]
wait running sprints you're saying he's
[510]
310 pounds but running sprints he was at
[512]
the front of the pack yeah
[514]
next to foskey next to foskey yeah
[518]
oh my gosh this dude hooper or what like
[520]
where's that athleticism come from i
[522]
think yeah i don't know if he was a
[523]
hooper or not i mean he was recruiting
[525]
here to be a tight end
[527]
um
[528]
so i i think that has something to do
[530]
with it but yeah i mean he's he's a
[531]
freak he's a beast he one of the things
[533]
he did during camp was we were doing
[535]
one-on-ones and uh
[537]
he
[538]
he slipped but when he slipped he did
[540]
like a spin move on the ground and like
[543]
didn't hit the ground and like kept his
[544]
feet and like continued to block the guy
[547]
he was going against him he's he's a
[549]
freak
[550]
he is a freak so when you talk to these
[552]
young guys especially these young guys
[553]
who are having to play now
[556]
what advice do you give them about what
[558]
it means to represent this program or
[560]
really what it means in terms of just
[562]
making sure that this team can go as far
[564]
as humanly possible potentially even a
[565]
trip to the playoffs or a championship
[568]
yeah i mean you know i i tell them
[571]
they're stepping into a role that's
[572]
bigger than themselves and um
[574]
you know you kind of carry on the torch
[576]
of the tradition that has been
[578]
given to you by guys that have been here
[580]
in the past and you know you're in a
[582]
pass torch for guys
[583]
here in the future um
[586]
the i like joel
[588]
before every game you know
[590]
you know if there's a good of a
[592]
defensive line and he's going against i
[594]
always kind of get up in his grill and
[595]
i'm always kind of like you know like
[597]
you know come on gel like and he's
[598]
always like cool cold face stone face
[601]
like
[602]
like yes sir like and he goes out there
[604]
and he delivers
[605]
that that's got to be pretty awesome for
[607]
you at this point in your career to be
[608]
able to have those conversations how
[609]
does that resonate with you being able
[611]
to be that older guy now
[613]
it's command like i always looked up to
[615]
those guys and and you know i'm finally
[617]
in a position where i get to be one of
[618]
those guys
[620]
when you go back to pittsburgh how did
[622]
all your friends growing up view the
[624]
success and the career that you built at
[626]
notre dame
[627]
uh i mean that'd be something you'd have
[629]
to ask them i mean
[631]
i mean to my face i mean they'd probably
[633]
you know
[634]
you know
[636]
mess around and
[638]
my friends are they're like uh you know
[640]
me and my friends we have a funny
[641]
relationship they only bring up the bad
[643]
things that have happened
[646]
like me getting pancakes when i was a
[648]
junior in high school by you know
[649]
getting triple teamed or something
[650]
they'll send in a video of that then
[652]
they'll never have you know they'll
[653]
never commemorate me on my highlights of
[655]
my career you know they're always they
[656]
always keep me humble and stuff and i
[658]
really appreciate about them but i mean
[659]
they tell you the same thing i've always
[661]
been a leader and i've always been a
[662]
lead by example kind of guy and um
[665]
a hard working type of person
[667]
i'm glad you got friends just like mine
[669]
man kurt we really appreciate you taking
[670]
some time it's been so awesome watching
[672]
your career and what you've meant just
[674]
as forget about football what you've
[676]
meant to that building what you meant to
[677]
notre dame so thanks for coming on man
[679]
and appreciate it
[681]
no doubt sounds good take care all right
