[4]
What is going on everyone? Have you ever heard the expression "it's
[7]
no day at the beach"? If you haven't it's normally part of a
[10]
conversation about something unpleasant like a tough day at work
[13]
dental work passing a kidney stone etc the reason we say that is to most of us
[18]
being at the beach is a good time so if it's a bad time
[21]
it's no day at the beach get it okay most people dream about living at the
[25]
beach and that's why having an ocean view home
[27]
costs double or more what the same house might cost
[31]
a mile or so inland but just living in a beach town is a dream for a lot of
[35]
people today's video is about beach towns that
[38]
some would consider affordable and might actually be an option now or
[42]
in the future for a lot of us on this video we look for towns that are
[45]
on the coast have somewhat of a low cost of living and
[48]
reasonable housing costs and i'll tell you up front that i'm sure we missed
[52]
some in a lot of people's opinion i would love to hear about it in the
[55]
comments section below as always if this list gets a good
[58]
amount of views we might do a viewer's version of your suggestions
[62]
one other thing i want to tell you is if you've come to this video looking for
[66]
affordable beach towns in southern california or let's say hawaii
[69]
forget it they don't exist alright let's see what we got
[74]
number 10 jacksonville north carolina yeah not the florida jacksonville this
[78]
one's in north carolina jacksonville is a military and a beach
[81]
town right outside of camp lejeune north carolina which is the largest
[85]
marine corps base on the east coast this one kind of
[89]
shouldn't be on the list because it's a little bit inland
[91]
but it has a bay called the new river and most people really consider this a
[95]
beach town the town is home to 73 000 people and
[98]
they aren't all marines or in the navy they say a median home price here goes
[103]
for about 160 thousand dollars now that's what they say and that's the
[106]
averages but realistically you can get a nice three-bedroom home
[110]
built in the last 10 years for under 250 thousand dollars
[114]
it's a good price they do have the marine corps air station new river right
[118]
outside of town and that can get a little loud so that
[121]
might help bring down the property value but it's a nice place to
[124]
live the crime isn't terrible and the cost of living is 15 percent
[128]
lower than the national average so it is a definitely good place to live
[132]
and buy a home rent's pretty cheap here too
[135]
number nine gulfport mississippi gulfport is mississippi's second largest
[140]
city after the capital city of jackson this is a beach town that's right on the
[144]
gulf of mexico and not too far from biloxi mississippi the beaches here are
[148]
really nice i've been there a couple times it's been years but i've been
[152]
there a couple times they still look great the waterfront district is always
[155]
a good time people get to stroll around with cocktails in their to-go cups and
[158]
wander up and down the beaches if you want and into the casinos
[162]
this is a tourist town sort of like vegas with cut off jeans
[165]
the median home price they say is 127 thousand dollars now realistically you
[170]
can get a nice three-bedroom home for between 220 and
[174]
300 000. keep in mind we got some nice ocean here
[178]
those are really good prices for what you're getting if you want to
[180]
go big you can get ocean view home for under 500 000
[184]
they have one right now that's just like 490
[187]
000 that is directly across beach boulevard from the sand
[190]
that's how close you are look out your front door you can see the ocean or the
[193]
gulf on top of all that good news the cost of
[196]
living here is 14 percent lower than the national average
[200]
this town has a lot of really good people too you'll notice that as soon as
[203]
you go there people are decent here a lot of the south is that way you got to
[206]
go into some really crappy neighborhoods to
[208]
find bad people in the south a lot of times
[211]
number eight aberdeen washington this one is one of my favorites
[215]
aberdeen is located at the mouth of grey's harbor if you like
[218]
water this place has more than enough it is on grey's harbor like i said
[222]
the pacific ocean is right there and they have three rivers that flow into
[225]
the harbor all around the town and of course
[228]
waterfalls from the sky on a regular basis like the rest of the pacific
[231]
northwest it rains a lot here it is also the
[234]
birthplace of kurt cobain yeah he was born here
[237]
they even have the kurt cobain memorial park named in the memory of the late
[240]
nirvana musician the median home price here is about 160
[244]
000. that's what they say but realistically you're looking at 220
[248]
to 300 000 to get something decent what really makes this place shine is
[252]
the state has no income tax that's always a good thing especially if
[255]
you're like retired a lot of states will tax your retirement income
[258]
no not here the cost of living is also about five percent lower than the
[262]
national average so it's all good this is a definitely
[264]
good place to live if you don't mind the gray skies in the rain really
[268]
number seven port arthur texas right on the border of louisiana you have
[273]
port arthur texas texas in general does a good job of keeping the cost of living
[277]
low port arthur takes it a step further some of the homes here would probably go
[281]
for about 20 percent higher anywhere else in texas but being so
[284]
close to louisiana the property values are a tad bit lower
[288]
probably because you got that bayou stank on it but realistically if you
[291]
want a nice livable home here you're looking at 150 000 to 200 000
[296]
that is still very low especially being so close to the ocean or the gulf
[299]
nice homes start around 300 000 here now here's where this place really gets good
[304]
the cost of living is 17 lower than the national average in
[308]
port arthur not bad at all you just gotta deal with
[311]
being so close to louisiana number six hampton virginia most people
[316]
have never heard of hampton virginia i'm one of them
[319]
hampton is right next to newport news virginia which i have heard of
[322]
it's part of the whole hampton road metro area on the virginia peninsula
[326]
hampton is an independent city in the commonwealth of virginia it is a
[330]
commonwealth and they got about 140 000 residents hampton has three really
[334]
nice beaches with great views sure the occasional nuclear-powered
[338]
naval vessel cruises by but that's a small price to pay for such an amazing
[341]
view of the ocean what i like about this town is the cost
[344]
of living this is a very desirable place to live unlike some of the other towns
[348]
on this list and they still maintain a low-cost living they're actually three
[351]
percent lower than the national average if you know this area and you've seen
[354]
this area you'd think it should be you know
[356]
10 over the national average no it's still lower you could buy a older
[360]
livable home for around 200 000 here a decent one starts around 250 000 and
[366]
goes up it goes all the way up but this is a
[368]
nice place to live that's still relatively cheap
[372]
number five palm bay florida hey look at that florida made the list
[376]
unlike california they have nice beach towns that are still affordable
[381]
shockingly the cost living here is six percent lower than the national average
[385]
i didn't see that one coming i thought florida was gonna be up there but no
[388]
they have some nice places palm bay is in between vero
[391]
beach and cocoa beach on the atlantic side
[393]
it has a golf course and some killer mountain biking and you're not terribly
[397]
far from orlando in case you want to give disney all your money
[400]
the median home price here is 120 000. now i always
[403]
say but realistically because median means they take all the properties for
[407]
sale most expensive and the cheapest and the cheapest could be a lot someplace or
[411]
a vacant home that's been vacant for 20 years
[414]
and it's going for 20 000. well you average all that out and you come up
[417]
with a median home price which is really not realistic so really what you're
[421]
looking for here is nice homes start around 200 000
[425]
that's for nice livable home 250 starts the nicer homes
[429]
built sometime after duran duran was relevant palm bay is a
[433]
nice place to live especially if you're the
[437]
retirement age because everyone wants to move to florida when they're retired
[440]
it's nice it's warm hurricane season can get a little scary
[443]
but other than that it's a nice place to live
[447]
number four ocean springs mississippi ocean springs
[450]
is a town of about 17 000 and it's still able to keep that
[455]
small town mojo the magnolia state has a lot of problems being expensive isn't
[459]
one of them the cost of living is seven percent
[462]
lower than the national average the housing is 16 percent lower
[465]
and the town sits on the beach ocean springs is right across the biloxi bay
[469]
bridge from biloxi which isn't very expensive either there are
[473]
plenty livable homes for around 150 000 in ocean springs but you really want
[478]
to be looking somewhere around 225 250 000 for a nice one that you won't
[483]
need to do a bunch of work with it'll just be a nice house the downtown
[487]
area is great the architecture is amazing
[489]
has streets lined with old oak trees it just gives you that whole
[493]
old south feeling number three surfside beach texas surfside beach is
[499]
also known as surfside to you know the people that live there it
[502]
sits on the shores of the gulf of mexico near the city of freeport texas
[506]
the population is a little over 500 and it's a great place to live if you don't
[510]
mind climbing stairs all the homes here are
[512]
built on stilts the cost of living is three percent
[515]
lower than the national average and the housing is only one percent lower
[519]
that's not the lowest on this list but the best part about this place is how
[522]
close you are to the water it is so close that like i said
[525]
everything's built on stilts because the water likes to come ashore and visit the
[529]
locals apparently you could buy a house stilts and all for
[532]
under 200 thousand but the nicer ones start around three hundred thousand
[535]
and you go up from there surfside also has
[538]
lake jackson in the area it's almost a beach town but if you're looking for a
[542]
place close to the beach look at lake jackson this town has some
[546]
of the best stats i have ever seen and it still maintains a low cost living
[550]
and low housing prices so yeah lake jackson if you want this
[555]
area i'd pick lake jackson and drive to the
[557]
beach when i want to go number two lubick maine i bet you didn't
[562]
think anything in new england could possibly be
[565]
considered cheap well luckily lubic is so far away from
[568]
everything else it stays cheap lubic is one of the most northeastern towns in
[572]
the united states right across this bridge
[574]
is canada there are a bunch of places more north of here but
[578]
eastport lubic look like they're the furthest east
[581]
normally when a town is located near the canadian border i suggest it to retirees
[586]
as we all know prescription medications are normally
[589]
about two to three times more expensive in the united states than canada
[593]
but this island across from lubic is very rural and i couldn't find anything
[598]
that would look like a pharmacy if i'm wrong let me
[600]
know in the comment section below the cost of living in lubic is seven
[605]
percent lower than the national average and housing
[608]
is 47 percent lower you can get a nice house
[611]
with a view of the water or even on the water for less than two hundred thousand
[616]
lubic is a beautiful small town if you ever get a chance you're in the area
[620]
which most of us never will but if you are in the area
[622]
check it out and number one pensacola florida pensacola has some of
[628]
the whitest sand beaches i have ever seen i've been to a lot of beaches i
[632]
grew up in southern california and our sand was
[634]
sort of yellowish brown like a beige here you have
[637]
white soft sand it's amazing you have the city part which is on pensacola bay
[642]
the beaches the few that they have on there are okay
[645]
but you have pensacola beach where all the white sand and touristy things are
[649]
and that's right on the gulf you just gotta go over a couple bridges to get
[653]
there this is a great place to live great
[655]
weather most of the year and tons of outdoor stuff to do
[658]
sure you have to deal with the sound of naval aircraft every now and then but
[661]
it's also where the blue angels train so it makes it okay by the way they have a
[665]
really really good air show in pensacola every single year
[668]
almost every year it got cancelled this year like everything else
[671]
the cost of living in pensacola is seven percent lower than the national average
[675]
and housing is five percent lower they have a lot of homes here for sale for
[680]
under a hundred and fifty thousand dollars i'm not even kidding these are
[682]
livable homes probably not in the best neighborhood but under 150 000 if you
[687]
want something nice three bedrooms in a nice neighborhood you're looking at
[691]
220 to 260. that's it this is a great place to live
[699]
all right so that is my cheapest beach cities in the united states
[703]
like i said i'm sure there's a bunch of others that i missed
[706]
these are the ones that we found that were very attractive to most people i'd
[709]
love to hear if you know of a really good one
[711]
maybe we'll make another list like i said before but that's that
[715]
