What Are NFTs? And Can You Make Money Selling Your Music as One? - YouTube
Channel: Disc Makers
[0]
Hi, my name is Tony van Veen, CEO of Disc聽
Makers. All of a sudden, in the past month or so,聽聽
[6]
NFTs have been all over the news. Record albums,聽
paintings, gifs of NBA players dunking are聽聽
[13]
all selling for big bucks and the media just聽
can't get enough of it. So, what on earth is an聽聽
[18]
NFT? And is there any money to be made for you by聽
selling your music as one? Well, let me explain.聽聽
[26]
As I'm sure you've heard by now, NFT聽
stands for non-fungible token. In essence,聽聽
[31]
it's a way to prove ownership of an original聽
digital file. You see, with physical art,聽聽
[38]
the original was always clear. There is only one聽
original painting of Van Gogh's Starry Night.聽聽
[45]
There is one original open-reel master of Bob聽
Marley's Catch a Fire album. The originals,聽聽
[52]
therefore, will always be worth much more than聽
any copies that are made of them. But how does聽聽
[58]
it work with a digital file? With digital art?聽
Once an artist has created a digital piece of art,聽聽
[65]
an image, or a music recording, anyone who gets聽
their hands on a copy has a copy that is equal聽聽
[71]
in quality and, therefore, equal in value to the聽
original. Up till now. An NFT allows its creator聽聽
[81]
to add a bit of data to the electronic file聽
or, more accurately, add an electronic file聽聽
[88]
to the non-fungible token that proves its original聽
provenance, where it came from, and who owns it.聽聽
[96]
This instantly makes an original digital file聽
worth more than all otherwise identical digital聽聽
[103]
copies. After all, it is the original and聽
you can prove it. That identifying data聽聽
[110]
of an NFT sits on the Blockchain - basically聽
a digital way to track and register data in a聽聽
[117]
universally accessible global database upon which聽
cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin are also based.聽聽
[125]
And interestingly, because the data on the聽
blockchain allows people to track who owns an NFT,聽聽
[131]
NFTs can be bought and sold multiple times and聽
their ownership trail will also be recorded and聽聽
[138]
confirmed in that database. This allows owners聽
to resell NFTs and the digital artwork that they聽聽
[145]
come with for a profit if they are inclined to do聽
so. Don't ask me to explain it more technically,聽聽
[152]
I don't understand exactly how the digital聽
sausage is made, but it works somehow. In essence,聽聽
[159]
what an NFT does it allows you to prove聽
your ownership and as a result, it allows聽聽
[165]
the digital creations to become collectible. Any聽
kind of digital file can be attached to an NFT.聽聽
[172]
You've probably heard that digital artist聽
Beeple recently sold an nft of 5,000 of his聽聽
[178]
digital images for a whopping 69 million dollars聽
at Christie's Auction House. Artist Grimes sold聽聽
[187]
several NFTs of her recordings for about five聽
million dollars. And Kings of Leon launched聽聽
[192]
their most recent album as an NFT. Heck, just聽
about anything digital can be sold as an NFT.聽聽
[199]
Jack Dorsey, the founder of Twitter, recently聽
sold the very first tweet ever as an NFT聽聽
[206]
for 2.9 million dollars. So, are NFTs for聽
you? And is there any money to be made?聽聽
[214]
Well, in short, if you're already rich and famous聽
as an artist, then maybe. If there already is聽聽
[221]
demand for your music your digital creations have聽
value that can likely be monetized as an NFT.聽聽
[227]
And if you're not famous yet, well then it's聽
too soon to think of NFTs as being a revenue聽聽
[234]
opportunity for you. NFTs as a vehicle are聽
really still a bleeding-edge concept. It's聽聽
[240]
no accident that many of those people buying NFTs聽
for big bucks today are people who made big bucks聽聽
[247]
speculating on cryptocurrencies and they're paying聽
for the NFTs with those cryptocurrencies. Look,聽聽
[254]
as independent artists, we have always been聽
followers of technology that was first established聽聽
[260]
and mainstreamed by majors - the major artists聽
and the major labels. When CDs first came out,聽聽
[266]
for example, a long time ago, they were developed聽
and pioneered by the majors and the first artists聽聽
[272]
on those CDs were all on major labels. It was only聽
when CDs went mainstream that independent artists聽聽
[278]
started adopting them and putting out their music聽
on CDs. NFTs are clearly not mainstream yet today.聽聽
[285]
I mean, while many people today are聽
talking about NFTs because of the big聽聽
[289]
valuations of some of these early sales, do聽
you actually know someone who owns an NFT?聽聽
[295]
Yes, there are some interesting concepts being聽
tested that are starting to get acceptance among聽聽
[301]
digitally-savvy consumers like the NBA Top聽
Shot digital trading cards, but it will take聽聽
[307]
a while for NFTs to get broad acceptance among聽
your likely fanbase. I do believe, however,聽聽
[314]
that NFTs will be around and become a fixture in聽
the creative digital landscape, but at this time,聽聽
[321]
it's too early to start worrying about them for聽
your music. Once the format becomes mainstream聽聽
[327]
and once consumers begin accepting and buying聽
them in large numbers, that is when you can start聽聽
[333]
figuring out how to put out your next creation as聽
an NFT. Until then, just keep an eye on the news聽聽
[340]
and see how NFTs develop as a creative format. And聽
when it's time to put out your music as an NFT,聽聽
[346]
you'll be sure we'll let you know. Hope聽
you found this helpful. See you next time.
